Won't recognize files

Numbers won't open any of my files.  It says "you need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."
I've tried multiple files, including files I haven't touched in a long time, and it's always the same message.
I've tried deleting Numnbers, but then when I go to the App Store it says that numbers is already installed so I can't "reinstall".
Very frustrating......

Here's a shot at it without knowing what os you are running:
You are likly to have both Numbers '09 (2.3) and Numbers 3 on your computer.
Three bars is '09, four bars N3.
If you are tryng to open N3 files with '09 you could get that message. If you are storing files in the cloud they could be updated to the newest version.
Hope this helps.

  • Restore won't recognize file

Successfully backed up Curve 8330 to DM V 4.1.   (ad to wipe handheld due to a server upgrade.)  Tried to restore back to Curve V 4.7 and won't recognize the file.
First thought is to restore to an old 7130 phone first then perform a back up on a newer DM version to then restore to the Curve.
    Any ideas?  Solutions?  Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First, look ON the pc and determine if and where the backup file is located. It will have the date in the file name and the "backup" as well, and end in the file type of IPD.
Second, is your boss on a corporate BES account? If so there will be a way to make the backup file be recognized.
    Let me know.

  • Photoshop won't recognize files unless they have file extension

Programs won't recognize their own (older) documents unless the file name includes the file type extension. For example, Photoshop won't recognize a .jpg from another Mac unless the .jpg is included in the file name.
How can I fix that without having to type the file extension every single time I want to open a file I've made on another Mac?
I have already turned on "show file extensions" in Finder Preferences. Some files just won't show their extensions.
Is there some other setting I can change?

I just did a little testing here to try and duplicate your issue. You're right. I pulled various old files from my archives that were created under OS 9. Which as you know, didn't normally use any type of file extensions.
Anything that was a TIFF, JPEG or EPS file opened in Preview, even though I know they were created in Photoshop. Adding the appropriate extension didn't change anything, they still opened in Preview. The only ones that opened in Photoshop when double clicked were those saved as native Photoshop files, even though they didn't have a .psd extension.
I was able though to do the normal process of doing a Get Info on a TIFF, changing it to open in Photoshop and then clicking the Change All button. From then on, all TIFFs opened in Photoshop as expected whether they had an extension or not.

  • Log and Transfer: FCE4 won't recognize files from my camera

    Hi ...
I have a Sony XHR-NX5U and am capturing video on an optional Sony 128GB hard drive built for this camera. I've shot AVCHD video in both 1080/60i HQ and 1080/60i FX formats, and the camera produces video files in an MTS format (nestled in a series of folders), along with accompanying CPI files (I don't know what these are for).
My FCE4 program doesn't allow me to either import these files or use log/transfer. I've been forced to buy an external program to convert the MTS files into MOV files and then import these (Log and Transfer still won't recognize these MOV files).
What can I do to get FCE4 to recognize and allow the files directly from my camera?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
    - matt

I see your camera can be switched to record a bunch of ways.
    Try this one:
    AVCHD FH (17Mbps) 1920x-1080/60i
It should work with Log and Transfer over USB.
Also make sure you start a New Project in FCE with the Easy Setup AVCHD-Apple Intermendaite Codec1920 x 1080i60 selected and active.
Some cameras do not seem to transfer if mixed media is on the card. Try a test with the above media ONLY on the card.

  • Premiere Elements won't recognize files

Hello, I am using Premiere Elements 8 and I am so frustrated with it.  All of a sudden when I go to add media, it does not recognize files.  I tried to open 2 mp4 files and it said it was the wrong file type or I didn't have the necessary codec.  Last week it had no problem adding MP4 files.  So, I converted the MP4 files into AVI files and guess what?  It didn't recognize them either.  I could scream.  So I tried to add an mp3 file, no luck.  Converted it to a WAV file, same thing.  So, anybody have an idea of what is going on?
Would someone like to convince me that this software isn't a piece of trash?
Two weeks ago I was adding titles to a movie I was putting together and it crashed every time I added a title.  But at least the title was added before it crashed.  I had 12 titles and it crashed 11 times, so I had eleven titles added. I finally gave up adding the last title when it crashed before I could add the title.  I tried to add the title about 10 times before I gave up.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

If you are not able to open files that did open before, something has changed... or maybe become corrupted
Reset Corrupted Preferences = Press/HOLD Ctrl+Alt+Shift while starting program
If that does not work, you need to find out exactly what is inside your files

  • Photoshop CS2 for Win 7 won't recognize file type

I scanned some images using Phtoshop CS2 and saved them in Photoshope as jpgs. But apparently photoshop interpretted the end of the file name that I typed as a file extension - so a file that was called Portrait-06.22.1999 - was saved as a "1999" file as opposed to a jpg file. I can view these images in Windows Photo Viewer or Windows Live Photo gallery but they won't open in Photoshop. How do I change the file type so photoshop will recognize them? I tried just to add a JPG extension to the name of the file but that did not work. Also those photos that had this problem but were listed under "open recent" - I was able to get back in and save again as jpg and now they are fine. What to do with the others? Is there a trick or something I need to download? Thanks.

Tested an image.  Here are the results.
If you have bat.test and save it saves as bat.test.  In bridge their is no thumbnail as it is not recognized.  You can rename as bat.jpg and it then works.  Just right click and select rename.
If you have bat.test.jpg you can rename and just eliminate .test
Yes, you loose a little bit each time you save a jpg, but if you have it above 9? it is very minute.  You would probalby have to save it dozens of times to see the difference on the screen.  Depends on original pixel size and what you are going to do with it as to whether you will see any difference.

  • I copied library to a new hard drive, now iphoto won't recognize files.

I am new to iPhoto, so be gentle. My daughter uses it a lot, and now I seem to have messed up her library. We are using iPhoto 4.0.3. OS 10.4.11
I installed a new hard drive. I copied the iTunes and iPhoto libraries to the new larger hard drive. I copied the iphoto library to a designated folder (not the default folder). My daughter has now moved the photos into their default location, and advised iPhoto of where to look - User/Daughter/Pictures/iPhoto library. When she opens iPhoto her photos don't appear. When she picks a photo and drops it into iPhoto, the message appears,
"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
The files are jpegs that open fine in Photoshop, Preview etc.
I did some reading and saw reference to deleting the file com.apple.iphoto.plist. Tried that, no success.
I would appreciate your assistance. Like I say, I don't know iPhoto at all. As a second question, I have a G4 with a dual 1.8 processor, what version of iPhoto/iLife should I be looking to upgrade to?
    Thanks for your help.

"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
That is the standard error you get when you try to import a photo that already resides inside the iPhoto Library folder. It prevents duplication in your library.
It sounds like you followed the correct procedure, but let's double-check. iPhoto can be run from a location other than the default. When you moved the library, did you copy the whole iPhoto Library folder as one intact unit? How did your dtr point iPhoto to the library? The correct way is to hold down Option while launching, select "Choose (or Find) Library" then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder and Open. Is this what you/she did? If so, perhaps try again?
As a second question, I have a G4 with a dual 1.8 processor, what version of iPhoto/iLife should I be looking to upgrade to?
I am very happy with iLife '06 on my 1.4 GHz G4 mini with 1 GB RAM. You could get iLife '08 for iPhoto 7, but be aware that iMovie 7 won't load on your machine because it requires a G5 or Intel machine. I made the decision not to upgrade because I'm happy with my current performance, and I think that the video-intensive and RAM-hog iPhoto 7 would bog down my mini. You can still buy iLife '06 from Amazon.com. See the system requirements:

  • Photoshop CS4 won't recognize file and won't save

Help!  I have Photoshop CS4.  I have had trouble in the past with photoshop not recognizing my raw files from Nikon (NEF).  Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.  Now I can't get PS to save any file, jpeg or ps.  Can anyone help me please?

Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

    • What exact version of Ps CS4 are you using?  11.0.2?
    • Exact version of the OS?
    • You are not working over a network, are you?
    • Have you tried creating a fresh, new account and logging in as a different user?
    • Have you Repaired Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility?
    • Check the read and write permissions on the folder(s) and volume(s) to which you are attempting to save.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Won't recognize file format

When I click on an excel or word document it can't find the application but if I open up an excel or word program first it will open the document in the correct program. How do I correct this "link"?
    Terry

    Hi Terry!
Do your Office documents have the appropriate file extensions appended to their filenames (.doc, .xls, etc.)? This is imperative for Windows and growing more and more necessary for Mac files.

  • Instrument library won't recognize files

I purchased the download version of Logic Pro 9.1.7 last evening and I'm already having problems.  Forum and Google searches haven't turned up the answer to my problem.
After installing all the additional download content a large number of my instruments have been "lost" and are unlisted in the library.  Most are .aif files and search finds that the files still exist in ApplicationSupport:Logic and they reside in the "EXS Factory Samples" and "Sampler Instruments" folders.  I have tried moving those folders to no avail.  They were usable before I downloaded the additional content.
    PLEASE help.

Correction.  The unrecognized files include many .exs and .wav files and are not limited to .aif

  • Pre8 won't link to/recognize files in Media tab of Organizer - please help

Today I opened a project that I have been working on and it would not link to some or all of the files that have previously loaded successfully on numerous occasions. The project asked me to locate the files, and when I did, it said they could not be linked because they'd been created with one audio track and now had two. However, these were the exact same files that I've been working with, and have not changed them at all. When I did open the project (it was unrendered even though it had been previously rendered) the files were still in the sceneline and timeline and in the project section of the organizer tab, and appear to work in the movie, but do not show up visibly in the media section, where I just get icons but can't see the image.
This appears to be a problem with my program, because I opened older projects and even created a new one to test with, and same problem with loadng media. It will load, but won't recognize, and when I try to drag into the project,it opens a dialog box asking where the file is, but won't take it.
The only thing that I did immediately preceding this was last night, I tried to load an itunes mp4 audio file into the project, but it wouldn't take because it said the file type was not supported or the codec was wrong.
Please help with this. Could the program be corrupted? If so, how can I fix and not lose the projects I have made?
    Thanks, Michael

Going back some years, I tried using USB externals for editing to/from, but found two problems:
1.) frequent read/write errors, usually delayed write failures. Many others were having the same problems.
2.) the speed was so horribly slow.
I then went with FW-400, and got no read/write errors, but the speed, though faster, was still too slow for me. When FW-800 came out, I experimented with these, and have been using them ever since. Now, eSATA would be even quicker.
I wonder if you suffered from some errors on the USB drive. I'd first use G-Spot, a free utility, to check the audio in your files, to see how many channels are shown there. If you find that the files are now showing a single channel, instead of two, you might be able to convert the files with a program like Prism, or DigitalMedia Converter, to 2-channel. You'd want to Move your source files to another folder, and then convert to the same file names back in your source folder.
One tip on using externals: in your OS, you can set your drive letters. These will always be assigned the same, based on the drive's I.D., so that F:\ is always F:\, and G:\ is always G:\, regardless of what else is plugged in, and the order they are turned on. This will keep PrE from asking where is file xxxx.avi, etc.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Networking 2 computers to share files problem. won't recognize login/pass

    hey
i really need help with this.
i now have 2 computers, a powermac G5 and a powerbook G4 connecting to each other with an ethernet cable so i can share files. for some reason when i try to connect as a user instead of guest it won't recognize my login/or password. it was working briefly before.
the only thing i did different was go into my account settings in both computer's preferences and changed the user name and password so they would be the same. they were the same before other than a capital letter but that sometimes affects things so i wanted to make them the exact same. now no matter what i try i cannot login to the network other than as a guest. and i want to be able to access my whole other computer.
    this is what it says:
'Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator.'
appletalk is on in the ethernet tab.
    file sharing is on.
    i've repaired disk permissions.
any help on this asap would be great. thanks

    See this.
How to use an iPod with more than one computer.
You say the iPod is already set to manual transfer. If so, files cannot be automatically be erased from the iPod when connecting to a different computer that does not contain the same files.
Manual transfer is how you have control of the iPod when using it on more than one computer. Files on the iPod are added and deleted manually by the user and not automatically by the computer and iTunes.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • Bridge 'get photos from camera' stopped working and Bridge won't recognize my DNG files anymore

So, I've got Bridge set up to get pictures from mem.card whenever I insert one in my laptop (win. 8.1). A week ago I installed Sony's PlayMemories. Without asking me it hijacked Bridge's task of getting pictures from my cards. What's worse, I tried to fire the 'get photos from camera' function manually from Bridge. Bridge starts working, but nothing happens. I uninstalled PlayMemories and reset Bridge, also told my laptop to run Bridge whenever I insert a card. Still nothing happens and I still can't get the 'get photos' function to run manually from Bridge. Anyway, I can still rund the DNG converter to get my pictures, but today Bridge won't recognize my DNG files - worked fine yesterday. I downloaded CS6 from this link https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html  and tried to run the installer, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe I need to do a full uninstall off CS6 for it to do anything..?  Anyway, if any of you guys could help me with my Bridge/CS6 issues I'd be grateful.  I've got 3 sets of concert photos and a snowboard comp. shoot I need to finish this week
