  • IMac G5 won't recognize firewire DVD burner

Hello, all! I just purchased a LaCie+/-RW DVD drive (FA Porsche design) with firewire. From my first attempt to hook it up, my computer won't recognize the device. System profiler shows the firewire ports listed (400 speed) but the DVD drive doesn't show up either in profiler or on the desktop. I have tried: 1.) Resetting PRAM. 2.) Resetting SMU. 3.) "Resetting" the firewire ports in the same way that others have been advised to do in this discussion thread. 4.) Switching the firewire cable to the other firewire port. Yesterday I took the DVD drive to another Mac (G4 Tower) and it worked beautifully, so I'm certain that the cable, brick, and the drive itself are fine. Any ideas? What would be my next step to take so that I can burn on DVDs?
Also, if I picked up a firewire to USB cable/adapter, would that do an adequate job of transferring the data or would I be wasting my money?
Thank you in advance for your helpful suggestions,
    Boring Teacher

Good morning, DP! I've never hooked up any firewire devices to this machine before, so I can't be sure that the ports have ever worked! If by "optical drive" you mean the mac's CD drive, it's built in. I have three external USB ports, two of which are taken up by the keyboard and mouse. The other USB port has worked fine for swapping in the occasional camera or iPod.
Thanks for the interest, I'll wait awhile before I take it in to a service desk!

  • TS1277 after installing itunes, my computer won't recognize my cdrom/burner any longer.  Worked  ok before and I have uninstalled itunes and it works again and when I reinstall itunes it won't work again.  I have also went into registry files and deleted

After installing itunes, my desktop computer doesn't recognize my internal cd rom/burner.  I removed itunes and it works ok and when I reinstall itunes it won't work again.  I went into the windows registry files and deleted the lower filter which is one correction for this and it worked ok until the next itunes upgrade and now it won't work again.  If anyone knows what to do please let me know.  My device manager shows a code "10"

My device manager shows a code "10"
That suggests an AFS.sys issue. But we'd better doublecheck.
Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". (If you're running iTunes 11.0.x you'll need to bring up your menu bar first to see the Help menu.) Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here. (Use your Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut to paste.)

  • ITunes won't recognize my CD burner, error message -43 on CD diagnostics

I hope there is someone who can help me. I am at my wits end with this! I cannot burn any cd's using iTunes--it does not recognize that I have burning capablities. I have tried repairing and reinstalling iTunes, because the very first error message I get when opening iTunes reads like this "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes". I have done this about 20 times already. Then when I try to run CD diagnostic, this is what I get:

I am really unhappy with this problem, considering that I can use Windows Media Player with no problem whatsoever. Now I have purchased all kinds of music off of iTunes and can't even burn a CD--what a waste of money. I hope someone has a suggestion for me. When I tried to email to the iTunes support they told me they didn't handle this type of problem, and I'd have to call their technical help line and pay whatever fee they charge for calls. Please help! Or else I guess my husband wasted $400 on a video iPod that's worthless.

  • Disc drive fails and iTunes won't recognize CD after burning

    Hi all,
I'm having a strange issue with iTunes on my work computer, a Dell Optiplex GX280 with Windows XP installed, iTunes version 8.2.1.6.
About half of the time when I burn an audio CD, iTunes (or perhaps my computer) seems to have a problem with the final burn step. It goes through the whole process just fine, but after the countdown hits 0:00, I don't hear the 'your CD is finished' chime from iTunes, nor does the disc appear on the lefthand menu. The CD drive also doesn't respond at this point - the drive won't eject via iTunes or by me pressing the button (it will hard-eject with a paperclip-in-the-hole trick, but still doesn't respond after that). The only way I can get the disc to eject is by restarting the computer, at which point it will eject. After a restart, the AutoPlay will identify the burned CD as a blank disc, but if I try to re-burn it in iTunes, it gives me the error message "This is not a blank CD." (and of course the burn wasn't successful - it won't play in a stereo or in the computer). I'm wasting a lot of CD-Rs this way! :-/
I'm stumped. It seems to me that something in that final step of the burn process is causing the CD drive to fail, but I'm not sure what I can do fix the problem. Could it be the brand of disc I'm using, or something with the actual disc drive? Any help would be very much appreciated!

Okay, apologies for the duplicate thread - I tried searching and didn't see anyone with a similar issue, but now I see a thread down the page with the same issue of the disc not ejecting. I'll try WMP and see if that works any better...

  • CD Drive Won't Recognize DVDs or Burn CDs

I have a white MacBook. My CD Rom will read CDs and I can get content off of CDs. However, I am not able to burn CDs. It recognized the CD and the burn process starts, but then the CD is spit out. Also, it doesn't recognized DVDs, it tries to read it for a few seconds, but then spits it out. It's a three-year old computer. Is this a software or hardware problem? I don't have Apple Care for that computer so it would be nice to get some help on here.

    I'm completely stumped, honestly.
Are you backing up your data regularly? Are you using Time Machine?
Before you do anything more, try creating a new user account to see if discs work normally in the new user account.
If that brings no joy, I suggest using your install discs to do an Archive & Install (making sure to preserve user settings) and see if the problem clears up. After the install, do not install any updates right away.
If the problem persists after an Archive & Install you can also try an Erase & Install to completely rule out a software issue. If after the Erase and Install the disc drive still doesn't work properly, some portion of the hardware has failed and will need to be replaced.

  • HELP... From "Its the same all over again"...PE won't recognize my DVD Burner

    Hi Guys,
I am sitting with my computer repair guy. We have beaten my Dell Precision 340 desktop to death in an attempt to try to understand why its not recognizing its DVD burner. It started with the old Sony burner I had prior, but since it was old and very slow I took this opportunity to upgrade to a new higher speed Samsung DVD burner.
So we removed the old, put in the new did anti virus tests, tried the Microsoft patch found here, and so far nothing. Its as simple as in PE the little cautionary yellow triangle comes up and says "DVD burner not detected" and the "rescan" button is greyed out and not an option I have.
Its as complex as in when we try to burn ANYTHING through the desktop drag and drop its then shows as a CD drive once the blank disc is inserted,  and not a burner, of any type!!
It will however burn a disc through NERO, but I have to save the project and then burn it from it stored location on the hard drive.
This of course eliminates many of the assets of the program that I desire.
I need any and all help you can give. Computer guy and I are at a total loss.
    Thanks in advance,
    ~Emily

    Thanks for the quick replies!!!
Sadly we have read all you mentioned and for the last week NERO hasn't been installed and all components were removed and double and triple checked that they were'nt within a country mile of the computer.
We just know from testing that Nero will allow it to burn.
We did try everything you have already linked.
We did try the registry fix listed her: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/171067-32-drive-drive-detected
    Nothing.
This is going above our collective heads and we're starting to dream up ways to a.) fix it and b.) destroy it all in a magnificent display of pyrotechnics!!!

  • Old CD Burner Broke but iTunes won't recognize new external Burner

    HELP!
My internal CD Burner (E-drive) broke and I installed a new external burner (F-drive). However, when I go to burn a CD, iTunes wants to burn to the old, broken internal drive.
I checked Preferences, Burning but the ONLY drive listed is the old broken "E" drive - there is no list of drives to choose from (it is greyed out and I can't choose or point to the new "F" drive).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Diane

hmmmm. okay, let's try something relatively simple first ... a "reboot and repair".
reboot the PC. (very important.) now do a repair install of iTunes. in Add/Remove programs, select iTunes, click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, does the F show up in your Burning preferences?

  • DVD Burner won't recognize discs

I recently installed an lg gsa-4166b dual layer dvd burner to my emac and for some reason it won't recognize cds or dvds. Whenever I try to burn anything and put in a blank disc I get the message "no disk inserted". I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.11 and even installed the PatchBurn utility, but still no luck. Can someone help me?

Oh really? Now that is interesting, because in fact I also have a Western Digital MyBook Pro external HD. Actually 2. They worked fine until the last month or so, and one of them had a bad disc so I had to have it replaced on warranty. Now the other one is acting strange -- won't mount. WD had me upgrade the firmware and reinstall the latest drivers. But it's still not acting right.
And you are also correct about the disc playing. Normal DVD's, CD's and CD-ROMs play fine. It's just blank CD-R's etc that come up as "unreadable."
I bought these two WD MyBook Pro 1 TB drives on 10/20/2007 however, and I don't recall that I had a disc burning problem that long ago. Maybe it's been that long since I burned a disc? I'm not sure...
Incidentally I've had another problem for a really long time, which is a very long Mac OS startup. I am not sure when it started but it might have been about the time I bought these drives and installed the software. See threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1765645&tstart=0
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1880557&tstart=0
Yesterday two things happened. One, Apple sent through another automatic update requiring a reboot, but I didn't catch what it was. Two, WD had me upgrade the drive firmware and software drivers. Suddenly my bootup problem has gone away. So the question is, was it Apple's update or WD's firmware upgrade?
And lo and behold, I just entered one of the same blank Fujifilm CD-R discs and it mounts without a problem. I can now burn discs again. I have a feeling the WD firmware upgrade fixed a lot.
Yeesh! I think I shall be buying drives from someone else in the future.
Thanks for this very insightful tip.

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.
    Thanks,
    Knapper
    Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • IDVD selectively won't recognize .mp4 format - how to burn for dvd player?

    Hi -
I'm trying to burn a .mp4 movie for my gf's family so they can watch it on their TV instead of my tiny comp. After trying DiskUtility and iTunes (both to no avail, DU wouldn't even allow me to select a .mp4 format to burn on the DVD; iTunes burnt the movie, but it doesn't play on the DVD player ...). I thought I'd try iDVD, but it won't recognize the movie I'd like to burn - says the format is unrecognized. Tried with another movie, same format (.mp4) and it worked just fine.
I'm really at a loss - I didn't expect it would be so difficult to burn a DVD! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

Alright, my results correspond with Russ' hypothesis: both videos I tried are in the same format & at the same FPS, the only difference b/w them is the audio. The one that worked is Stereo (L R), the one that does not is the 5.1.
Unfortunately, I do not have Quick Time Pro, I just have QTP 10.1 that came w/ Lion (& an older version that I added b/c it allows playback speed control). Here, the export options are:
    480p
    720p
    iPod touch & iPhone 3GS
iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV
    Audio only
None of these were an obvious choice to me, any suggestions? I've heard something about "Toast", would this be an easier / better option?
Thank you for on-going help. Very much appreicated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

  • Mac won't recognize my Sony DRX-830UL-T DVD burner

    Hi,
I have successfully used this burner in the past, but for some reason now my computer won't recognize the existence of my burner. When I go to Toast and attempt to burn movies, it only recognizes the DVD machine that comes with the computer, which does not burn DVDs. I believe I have it connected right. It's plugged in, and on. the top cord is connected. Please any help you could provide would be great. Something always seems to go wrong when I try to make a home movie! Thanks!

That's a High Definition camcorder with CMOS not CCD chip so it's recording at 1080i I believe ...
It has an s-videdo output and others have had success with iMovie etc. using that feed.

  • When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.
    M
I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

  • I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.

I'm trying to burn photos onto a CD from Finder, but my iMac won't recognize either a CD-R or a DVD-R.  Any clues?  Nothing shows up in Finder as far as a Device, and I have a message telling me to "Insert a blank disc to begin" and that I will need a disc with at least "47.6 MB"--it's only 18 photos, and I need to burn them for a parent of a student (I'm a teacher).  I have tried several different discs, so it's not the actual CD or DVD.

Create a new folder. Place the photos in that.
From the Finder File menu choose New Burn Folder. That will appear on your desktop. Place the folder of photos  you created into that.
Now open Disk Utility and you will see that Burn Folder listed. Choose Burn from the menu.

  • My uMBP won't recognize recordable DVDs, can't burn

I have a early 2009 uMBP that won't recognize burnable DVDs. I originally had heard that it might have been a problem with cheap media disks, so I purchased another brand and have not had any success. My computer won't even recognize them when I insert them into the drive. I am getting errors from Toast as well as iDVD. The finder window also doesn't open asking me what I want to do when I stick the burnable DVD into the drive like it normally does. But I am able to play CDs and DVDs without any problems. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks for the help so far guys. Here are answers to the questions that have been asked so far:
I have tried using Sony DVD+R, Windata DVD+R and TDK DVD+R.
I looked in Sys Prefs and they weren't set to ignore.
Here are the specs from system profiler:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware Revision: KB19
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I tried the Windata disk again, and low and behold, it actually burned. But why didn't it recognize it the countless other times that I tried previously? I also just noticed this, but the system profiler says that it only will burn DVD-R and DVD-RW, not R/RWs. That's crap. My old MBP used to burn them all. Could the reason that it hasn't been working be because I have been using +Rs, not realizing that my computer says that it will only burn -Rs? And if so, how did it just burn on the +R if it only says it will burn -R?
I am definitely taking it to the Genius bar, but I definitely want to make sure that I have an idea of what is going on before I go in there. I have a history of not being able to replicate problems once I get to the genius bar...
