Won't Recognize Time Capsule

Bought 1TB Time Capsule 1 week ago. Did initial backup direct ethernet and all subsequent via WiFi. Everything works fine. However, today I noticed my 7AM backup failed. I am told it can't mount the hard drive. I go into SYS PREF to reselect the time capsule as the Backup Disk, it shows the Time Capsule, I select it, enter password, but about 2 minutes later get the message:
+*Time Machine Error*+
+*No backup volume has been selected*+
+*To select a backup volume, open Sys Pref and choose Time Machine*+
I do..and the loop of futility continues.
I have no problem getting into the Time Capsule through Finder and have successfully moved a file from my desktop to the capsule so I know I am connected and it works.
Also doesn't return anything when I click "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" from the Time Machine menu bar menu. I see my sparsebundle through Finder.
Any ideas on how to get it to recognize the time capsule? It sees it, but won't let me mount it after I enter password.
Do I reboot the time capsule though unplugging? Everything else is working fine ...the wifi and the ability to access via finder.
Thanks.

I checked the pondini fixes and ended up doing the following - in case this could help someone else with an iMac, OSX Lion, and Time Capsule... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
First, I downloaded and used Airport Utility 5.6 instead of 6.1 - BTW, I had to attempt download and installation THREE times before the program actually installed.  Be persistant.
Pondini #5: It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem.    See item C9.  I had to re-name my Mac, Time Capsule, network, etc... to remove all apostrophes and spaces.
Pondini #7:  If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion, it's not compatible, per RoaringApps, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well.   Use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons.   There may also be a file in Library/Application Support.
I then had to shut down computer, unplug Time Capsule, unplug modem; plug everything in again, then reboot computer; then had to go to Apple- System Preferences- Network- and reselect my Time Capsule to connect to WiFi again.
Then opened Time Machine preferences again and attempted back up - it worked!

  • Windows 8 won't recognize Time Capsule

    I set up my Time Capsule as a base station router and my Windows 8 recognized it in Y: drive;
    I spend 4 days backing up my data (super slow) over Wi-Fi;
But thereafter when I extended my router by attaching my Airport Extreme the Y Drive went away and the Airport Utility won't even open saying Windows 7 need a Service Pack 1; whereas I'm on my new lap top with Windows 8.
    Anybody have similar problem? Solution?
    Thank you

Open windows explorer and type into the address bar.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
Replacing that TCname or TCIPaddress with the ACTUAL TCname.. Must be SMB compatible.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. of course.
Or the TC IP address eg 10.0.1.1
If it fails have you loaded bonjour for windows .. there is none yet for win8 so try and load the win7 version.. alternatively use the whole Airport Utility for windows.
Set the guest account to read and write in the TC and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • My iMac Mac OS X v 10.7.4 won't recognize time capsule

I just bought a time capsule, my iMac can see it when I reset the settings on iMac and I can get through most of the stages to configuring it, but then at the end an unexpected error pops up and boots the time capsule set up out.
Once it gets booted out, my mac can't find it, unless i reset the time capsule again and the whole process starts over.
I made sure that my airport was up to date, it is. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

  • Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Why won't my Time capsule power on after shutting itself down?

Suggest that you unplug the Time Capsule from the power cord and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. Verify that the AC wall socket has power by testing another device like a lamp there.
Try to power the Time Capsule back up.
If it will not power up, unfortunately there has likely been a failure in the power supply section of the Time Capsule.
You will need to take the Time Capsule to an Apple store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to go over your options.

  • PC won't recognize Time Machine ext. HD

    Hi,
I have a ext usb HD that I'm using for TIme Machine. Problem is that when i plug it into any PC, it won't recognize it. How do i access my HD from a PC?
    Kind Regards

It's been years, but Macopener was what I used once to read Mac files on a PC - swapping zip disks with a client - it worked pretty good. Worked good over the network at the ad agency too (caveat being this was years ago).
Found it (well, the newer version) here - http://www.dataviz.com/purchase/shopdvz/detail.html?prod_id=1136 -
There are likely others out there - but that was the one I used, and at the time (we're talking 2000? 2003? it worked well.
I can't comment on time machine - I mean, that even if the upgraded macopener or similar will connect the drive and show the contents - whether you can get any info out of TM on Win.

  • New Macbook does not recognize Time Capsule backup from old macbook

I just purchased a late 2013 13" macbook pro. I have a mid 2009 macbook pro running Mavericks. The new macbook will not recognize the time capsule backup from my old macbook. I am trying to migrate all data over, but the new mac does not ever acknowledge the external drive that contains the backup. I've tried two different external drives with the same result each time. Both computers are running Mavericks.

Do you see the drive in Disk Utility?
If yes, run Repair Permissions then restart the drive.
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
    2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
    3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
    4. Click the repair permissions button.
In System Preferences > Time Machine can you select the old Time Machine with Select Disk?

  • New MacBook Pro does not recognize time capsule

Just picked up a new 13 inch MabBook Pro.  I would like to get my files from my backup which is on a time capsule (my old mac is completely dead).  the airport utility would not recognize it at all.  it is also my router, so i know the device is working.  thanks.

    Try with migration assistant.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
On Mavericks manually mount the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to Server.. and type
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you change that for the actual name or IP.

  • Why won't my Time Capsule connect the internet to my computer

Recently moved office.  Disconnected time capsule from modem from prior office which worked fine.  Connected to new modem and won't work.  Computer shows capsule connected but won't connect internet

Always start with a full factory reset and redo the setup.. The TC remembers too much of its previous setup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

I have the same problem. My Mac sees the PC but the PC (Windows XP) does not see the Mac (file sharing is on). My Time Capsule is directly connected to the cable modem.

  • Migration Assistant won't recognize Time Machine Backup

I recenly got my old thunderbolt-less macbook pro back from a repair and I can't seem to resotre my data. My external drive it reconized in finder, but not in Migration Assistant. I have updated to the newest OS and still nothing. I was tunning mavrics before the repair so this should be working right? Thanks for any help you can offer.

A possible reason for backups not to be available in Migration Assistant is that the computer doesn't have a name, or the name is corrupt. Open the Sharing preference pane and check the name. If you can't do that, reset the PRAM. Credit to ASC member Csnote for this observation.
Most likely, some folders were excluded from your backups as the result of a failed or aborted software installation.
Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • Why won't my Time Capsule allow me to connect more than one device to the network at a time?

Ok here is the shortest story I can come up with...
Several months ago lightening struck my house and ruined the power cord for my old AIR PORT EXTREME....after replacing the power cable my wireless network began to prohibit more than one device at a time to connect to the wireless network.
I replaced that network with a new TIME CAPSULE and it is doing the same thing.  I took my old AirPort Extreme to my work and it works like a charm.  My ISP says it is an Apple problem but I have had the same settings both at home and at work.  Work is great, multiple devices connect but home is one at a time and in order to connect ANOTHER device I have to power down one, and reboot the router and fire up the device I wish to connect.
    Any suggestions?

I am running off a Fiber line....the unit that is a battery back up and appears to be a modem as well is called CyberPower CS24U12V-NA3
Techincally, there is no "router" in my house, there is a LOCKED control box outside, a battery back up module in the garage that shows battery life and connection, then a cat5 outlet in my laundry room..All of which was installed by my ISP.
I am using a 2TB Time Capsule running DHCP in Bridge Mode.  I can't find the software version but updated it while installing it within the last two months.
    Under Network Tab
Enable NAT Port mapping is checked
    Under the Wireless Tab
    we have a 5ghz Network
Radio mode is set to:  802.11a/n-802.11b/g/n (Automatic)
    2.4 GHz is Auto
    5 Ghz is Auto
    I hope this helps....

  • Why won't my time capsule show up when I scan for a wireless network when I plug in the ethernet cable from my comcast modem?

I just setup my cable and internet at my new place yesterday thru comcast.  The internet works when it is plugged directly from my modem to my iMac but when I try to plug the modem up to my time capsule to set up wireless and go through air port utilites it can not find my time capsule

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • How do I get airport to recognize time capsule?

Recently I had the HIDDENEXT/Worm.Gen or some other malware that jumped from my VM Ware Fusion Virtual Machine running Windows XP over onto my Mac side.  It also infected my Time Capsule.  Using the Mac Disk Utility, I wiped the TC drive using the five pass to clear all the infected files.  Now when I scan with Airport, it is unable to find TC.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks edex67!  I thought I'd returned to factory settings but had not.  I appreciate the reminder!  Got it up and running like it was before!
Re the malware issue, I have quarantined 37 HIDDENEXT/Worm.Gen from my Library/Mail/IMAP accounts with MacKeeper, who terms it "other malware" on the quarantine page.  Hopefully I've gotten all of it cleared.  Whatever it was has created havoc.
    You are much appreciated!
