Won't regcognise Camcorder

I placed a post regarding this sometimes ago regarding a situation where my iBook and G5 won't recognise my camcorder, it says there is nothing connected, see below of a previous thread that I started sometime ago
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1491386#1491386
I have tried all of those possible solutions to the problem the reason for resurrecting this post is because I took my camcorder to my friends G5 and it worked perfectly ok.
Is anyone aware of anymore checks that I can do to my system to try and make both my iBook and G5 recognise my camcorder?
Advice would be much appreciated!!!
M

Have you tried resetting the firewire ports on the macs?
Also, maybe one of these?

  • Mac won't recognise camcorder

My mac won't recognise my sony DCR-PC5E. It works fine on Windows, and my mac recognises other Sony DV's using the same firewire. Any ideas? I don't want to have to buy a new camcorder....

    Martin,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Assuming you're using FireWire (what sony calls iLink) your camera should work.
Have a look through some of the tips in this thread:

  • Final Cut won't recognise camcorder

    Hi
I have a new IMac running 10.5.3. My problem is that Final Cut isn't recognising my Canon Camcorder HV30. However IMovie HD does so with no problems?
    Any suggestions?

I've now discovered that I had the settings wrong in the easy set-up menu. They should have been set at HDV 1080i50 and 25.00 fps

  • OS X won't recognize camcorder

have a new macbook, and just got a Canon Optura 500 camcorder. When I connect the camcorder under OS X, nothing happens. I have Windows XP installed using bootcamp. When I run Windows, it automatically recognizes the camcorder and prompts me for how'd I'd like to download the videos. Therefore, I know the camcorder is fine and there is an issue with OS X.
I find this surprising, since the Mac commercials talk about how things "just work" with a mac (and even use a camera as an example). How can I get OS X to recognize this camcorder and download the videos so I can start editing my videos with iMovie?

I'm using Firewire (otherwise it wouldn't have worked under Windows, either since USB only accesses still photos on the SD card rather than the tape). I open up iMovie, but it doesn't prompt me to do anything since it doesn't recognize the camcorder as any sort of storage device. The one thing it does do when I plug in the camcorder under OS X is it'll open Canon Image Browser, but then Image Browser will say "No Camera Detected" once it starts up.

  • Upgrade to Tiger. DV device not recognized.

I recently upgraded to Tiger and lost the ability for FCP Express (FCP-X)HD to read my DV device (Sony GV-D300 NTSC). I also notice my Sony is no longer on the list of acceptable devices, though it worked before (when I had Panther). I have had lots of problems with Tiger (like my server no longer works either and I can no longer backup anything).
The Sony works on iMovie HD, but on FCP-X I get "unable to locate the following external devices Apple firewire NTSC (720x 480)." When I hit continue it will not recognize the device. Do i throw away my $1000 Sony? Only import on imovie?
I have done the preference thing, opened it up in another login, tried on my camcorder also (Panasonic PV DV100D) which also worked before, done the video output refresh, none worked or helped.
All work on iMovie, but not on FCP-X. Any ideas?
    Thank you.
(i wanted to post this as a question in "won't recognize camcorder" but it won't allow me to post a new question???)

Similar problem. Newly upgraded FCE 3.0 won't recognise DV firewire device and quits on capture. I spoke to Apple'Care' - my Sony DSR-11 deck is "not on the list" and, ergo, it is simply my fault for not having checked the fineprint first - end of story. Thanks for nothing eh?
    http://images.apple.com/finalcutexpress/pdf/FinalCutExpress3.0_Qualified20051028.pdf
An attempt to upgrade to FCE 3.0.1 met with the message "not required" . I have QT 7.0.3 and I have deleted the additional QT receipts as suggested - no better. My deck works fine with iMovie HD - Apple'Care' said that's because the drivers and compatibilities are quite different from FCE. Does this all ring true? If so, I guess I'm off to the January Sales for a new camcorder from the rather abbreviated shortlist of supported PAL devices.

i tried to get the installation disc for the camcorder but mac wont' recognize it becaue it is windows based i guess.
i just bought the camcorder a few months ago and when my computer crashed thought i'm finally getting a mac...it's been a costly venture which has resulted in more frustration than before my pc.
now the things i want to use with my mac that i thought would be even simpler...are not even useable...
    help

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • Poor Picture Quality in iMovie Which USB Camcorder Will Work and Which Won'

    Dear Colleagues,
I continue to read accounts by readers regarding iMovie 98 havinga poor image quality when sharing to iDVD. It has been suggested that users with non-High Definition camcorders, standard DV8 camcorders such as my Sony DCR-TRV315, are stretching the Movie to far when using the Large and Medium setting for sharing ing to iDVD and other media.
If this is the case, what pixel size should I use when sharing to iDVD. I had understood that 720X480 was the standard format for non-High Definition Digital 8 Camcorders. So what correct pixel ratio should I use for DVD playback on a wide-screen HDTV with non-HD recordings.
I am planning to purchase a Sony USB camcorder and I continue to hear reports that they and other brands of USB camcorders won't work with iMovie 08. Is this simply a new user not fully understanding how his new camcorder works?
If this is not the case, how can one determine which USB camcorders are compatible with iMovie 08?
Please get back to me soon.
    Best regards,

A great deal has been said about im08 degrading interlaced video, to qualify the matter im08 resorts to progressive video depending on the capabilities of your mac, I for example can achieve full quality 1080i exports.
Additionally the matter has to be put into perspective. Of course a source video looks clearer on a mac if it is displayed in it's original interlaced format on a frame by frame basis, but this isn't how one would watch video. interlaced video looks dreadful on a computer monitor and needs to be de-interlaced to be watched, additionally you would never watch a video frame by frame and so comparing video in this way is somewhat pointless. There is a quality difference on some macs but if the video is compared in a realistic way the difference is quite small and often unnoticeable.
720 x 480 as you likely realise uses non square pixels which will be converted to square pixels for your AVC exports in im08, to maintain the aspect ratio of the pixels you should export to DV.
There are a list of supported cameras here, but of course there are many that are not in this list that do work. If you select a camera, post to see if anyone has had any compatibility issues, but as you seem to be aware a number of apparent issues are as a result of user errors rather than incompatibility.

  • Elements 3 won't recognize a camcorder

Have version 3 installed. It won't recognize a Sony digital camcorder which it has in the past. Used both USB and firewire. Firewire works with Microsoft Movie Maker Using Windows XP.
Also have version 4.0 but didn't install it because of the negative comments I read on forums such as this one.
May have to reinstall version 3 to solve problem. Other question is, should I reinstall 3 or install 4? Or should I just buy the new version 7 bundle?
Any suggestions on how to get version 3 to recognize the camcorder? Or, if not, which version is the most stable, etc. I have not progressed to HDV or Blue Ray yet and have no need for this capability. At least, I don't think I do.
    Thanks for your input.

Using only the FW connection, as PE cannot work with the USB connection, if WMM can see your camera (is that what comes up, when you plug it in, and turn it on?), it does sound as though something is getting in the way with PE.
I've seen instances, where the exact order of things seem to affect the operation of a Capture operation. These seem to be camera and system specific.
Try plugging in (FW only) the camera, turning it on, letting the Windows pop-up come up and exit out of that. THEN, start PE. Does this help? If not, power-off the camera and unplug it. Cancel any pop-ups about hardware unplugged, should you get any. Start PE. Plug in the camera, and then power it up. Exit any pop-ups, and put PE into Capture Mode. Does this work?
If still no go, then try plugging in the camera, but NOT turning it on yet. Start PE, go into Capture Mode, and THEN turn on the camera. Exit out of any pop-ups. Does this work?
Note: always plug/unplug the camera with the power OFF. Though there has been discussion on this (as most camera FW ports are 4-pin and unpowered), but be safe. No power on, when you plug/unplug. I even turn off power to the computer, when doing the plug/unplug operation, but then one could not have PE going, without always having the camera plugged in, but powered off. Just be careful with the plugging of the FW into the computer. We do not want a fried FW port on either your camera, or your computer. Yes, there is a little "catch-22" involved with my above suggestions.
Steve's suggestion to use WinDV is a good one, and might save you bothering with the test. Most folk do not have a problem with a FW-attached mini DV tape camera and Capturing via PE.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • IMAC won't read sandisk 8gb sdhc from canon hf m-31 hd camcorder

IMAC won't read Sandisk 8GB SDHC card from Canon HF M-31 HD camcorder

    Your camcorder is fine with iMovie 09. My suggestions are two;
1)Canons sometimes take a little bit of effort to connect. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting your camcorder. Try shutting down iMovie and then turning it back on. I have a Canon hf100 usb camera also and love it. I just put up with the odd frustration of it sometimes not recognizing the connection.
    2) Click on the camera icon in the main iMovie interface (middle, extreme left). See if your camera is "seen" my iMovie. If not, try disconnecting and reconnecting the camcorder.

  • IMovie 10.0.6 won't save my imported videos (from DV camcorder)

I am using this version of iMovie for the first time (I finally gave in and let 9 go), so maybe I'm missing something.  I am trying to import some VHS tapes and I'm using a miniDV camcorder to convert to digital, something I've done a bunch in previous versions with no problems.  The camcorder is connected with firewire to my MacBook.  So in iMovie I click "Import".  Here I can see and hear the tape when it plays.  There is a message that says "Camera Not Controllable", which is expected.  I click the blue import button down in the corner and the message changes to "Recording" with a counter for the time.  All seems great.  When I'm done I click "Stop Import", then "Close" and I'm taken back to the main iMovie window with the events list.  But in the only event, where it should have been saving the video, there is nothing.  I've tried this a bunch of times and created a new iMovie library on an external drive but nothing works.  It never actually seems to save any video.
Am I doing something wrong?  This is really frustrating!
    Thanks,
    Sean

    I have exact same problem.
iMovie 10.0.6 won't save my imported videos (from DV Digital Video Camera JVC GR-D290E).
    I have iMac 27" (end 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2).
I tried to reinstall the previous version of iMovie 9. But the OS can not do it.
Note: At the other my MacBook4.1 (OS 10.5.8, iMovie 8.0.6) same operations are functioning normally.
    What to do?

  • Camcorder won't send dv-out, thinks i'm sending dv-in

I have a Canon ZR500 that I'm trying to use to import some dv to imovie (on my macbook), but imovie won't recognize it. After perusing the tubes, it seems like the camera may be trying to import rather than export video. The flashing "DV-IN" on the camera lends credence to this hypothesis. Any suggestions as to how I might reverse this flow of digital video?

Did you try yelling at it?
I have a Sony, not a Canon, so I can not offer much first hand advice. But did you go through all the menus a few thousand times to check for any settings that might change it?
Does iMovie see the camcorder at all? How about the Mac if you go into the system profiler and check the Firewire bus?
And finally, perhaps a bad Firewire cable is the issue?

  • Camileo P100 camcorder won't store the date and time

My recently purchased camileo P100 camcorder won't store the date and time.
Every time it is started it has to be reset as it returns to the default date.
Has anybody else had this problem

I've got the same problem and reported it allready to Toshiba support.
Although I mentioned that there were allready more people who posted this problem, toshiba replied that they didn't receive such complaints. I was advised to return my camera to the reseller which I did'n do because I think it's a software problem so all the P100's have the same problem
