Won't remember default printer

Yes I know that Firefox ignores Window's 'default printer' setting, and I have used Firefox for years, and it always knew the correct printer. Today it suddenly picked a different printer (a fax virtual printer). I changed it to the correct printer, printed up the form, closed Firefox, opened it back up, and it DID NOT remember the last printer used. Then I searched the online answers and did the about:config thing, and there was no "print.print-printer" setting (despite using the printer with Firefox for years). there was a "print-printer" setting, and it listed the CORRECT printer.

This only happens in Pages, so I put the pages plist files in the trash and restarted my computer and now it works, at least with new documents. For some reason it still doesn't use the default printer for documents I created before doing this, but it's still alot better.
Quit Pages then from the Finder:
Go ->Go to Folder-> type in "~/pages"
put the pages plist folders in the trash
restart your computer

  • Acrobat won't rermember default printer

I recently upgraded to creative cloud. I've noticed that Acrobat Pro won't hold my default printer setting. I've tried deleting and re-adding my printers, I've tried renaming my printers so the one I was as default will be first in the list. I've tried opening Acrobat without an open document and setting the preferences. Doesn't matter. It always defaults to the most expensive printer, (ink and material.) All of the other programs seem to hold my default printer settings just fine. Of course, as soon as I've sent the print job, I will realize which printer it was sent to. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to cancel the job, because of the age and drivers of the printer. I'm running OSX 10.7.5. I believe this is a known bug. Does anyone have any work arounds?

I suspect that MAC is similar to Windows in this sense. The default printer is set in the OS, not the application. For the PC, it is Start>Printers and right click on the Adobe PDF printer and select default. Sorry, but I do not know the process for the MAC.

  • PS won't recognize "default" printer

This is an annoyance rather than an emergency-I'm on a Mac, I have three printers, and I want to use one in particular for a PS printing task. I fill up the printer with the right paper, then call up the flle and hit "print", forgetting to notice that the assigned printer is the wrong one. So a wasted proof. So I go to Sys Prefs and set the "default" printer to the one I want, go back to PS, pick the file, hit print, and I still get the wrong printer, so I set the print dialogue box  for the right one manually, get the print, call up another file, and hit print again. The Print dialogue box has reset back to the wrong printer. Photoshop seems to have its own "default" printer selection system, independent of the overall system preferences. Whether that's actually the case or not, How the heck do I get PS to recognize and use the "default" printer, rather than settling on its own random choice?

Further information: "Default" doesn't work in Illustrator or Photoshop, but it does work in other software, e.g., Apple Pages and MSWord. I haven't tried the system in other Adobe apps, but is this just an Adobe-Hates-Apple-and Apple-Hates-Adobe situation? Or is it just me?

  • I installed a new printer and set it as the Windows default printer but Thunderbird won't find it.

Using Windows 8.1 - x64 - Thunderbird 31.3.0 (Firefox 34.0.5 has found the new default printer)
I read about resetting printer.printer_printer and printer_printer but....
printer.printer_printer did not exist in the file.
Then I found printer_printer and chose "reset" closed and saved the file then closed and restarted Thunderbird.
But now the printer_printer command has disappeared completely from the file and the old printer info was left unchanged.
Then I went to the Windows "Printers and Devices" menu and deleted the old printer that Thunderbird was pointing to.
Then I closed Thunderbird again restarted Thunderbird and now the "print" command in the file menu is greyed out.
(Also the old printer info is still unchanged in the config file )
I would reinstall Thunderbird and just start over except I have about a dozen email accounts on several servers and have spent a lot of time recently on reconfiguring them to work on upgraded servers. Also I don't know how to save my emails if I reinstall Thunderbird (Is it possible to do this?)
I've googled for ideas but haven't found anything beyond the reset function.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've rebooted numerous times, reloaded the software twice, spent 4 hrs on the phone with HP and 2 with Adobe. No luck. It simply doesn't show the new printer in the drop down menu for Pro or Reader and yet shows time in all in Office, Paint, Web options. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • OS 10.7 won't let me set my default printer

When I go to print, in most programs, it always selects the first lists the first printer in alphabetical order. I set default printer to Last Printer Used and it still brings up the first in line alphabetically. I tried setting default printer to Last Used. Closed the preferences and when I reopen the preferences window, it's been reverted back to Last Printer Used. I even tried clicking the lock to lock the settings, but it still reverts back. It's driving me crazy. The printer that always comes up is a wide format and I have come close to printing emails to it instead of the black and white laser printer.

  • Why won't Pages 5.2 defer to my default printer?  All my other applications do.

I am using Pages 5.2 on  a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.9.4.  My default printer is a Canon MG5520. Except for Pages all my applications automatically defer to the MG5520.  But every time I print from Pages another printer appears in place of the default.  Only Pages has this problem.  Any way to fix it?

You created your Pages documents with a version of Pages older than v5.2 (Apr 1 update), and by latest available, that would imply v5.1.
Sign into iCloud dot com and use Pages in the iWork for iCloud beta. See if this Pages can open your documents. If it can, I would Send a Copy as Word document back to your Mac for lecture note resurrection.
I have had intermittent issues with .pages documents created in v5.1 that resist opening in v5.2 — but eventually do open on subsequent attempts.
If you had Pages ’09 v4+ already installed on your Mac prior to the v5 upgrade, it will be located in /Applications/iWork '09. Drag/drop that version of Pages to your Dock, and avoid using v5.2 for critical work. It just isn't ready yet.

  • Photoshop CS5+ Default Printer and Remembering Printers in Documents

Yesterday, the last thing I printed from Photoshop was to my Fax subsystem.  Today I opened three new raw files, all of which were destined for printing.
This ended up causing the print dialog to initially point to my Fax service for each of the three documents I opened, even though my system default printer is my HP inkjet.
Perhaps it is thought to be a good idea to have the last printer Photoshop printed to (instead of the system default printer) be the default for the next documents created, but...  It created exactly the wrong results in this case, multiplied by the number of images I opened.  Moreover, it was unexpected operation, because most Windows apps just don't work that way.
Adobe:  Please consider adding user-configurable options to your next version that allow a user to select more "traditional" Windows printer operation.
I can envision 3 settings that could be quite useful:
Use / ignore printer metadata from document.
Use system default printer / use the last printer Photoshop printed to.
Store / don't store printer metadata in document.
Through settings like these someone who wants printing defaults to work "the old way" could have what they want, and passing PSDs around amongst multiple users could be managed, instead of getting users into a situation where printer info that's not locally valid came along with the document.
    Just a thought.
    Thanks.
    -Noel

That brings up a similar, and not only annoying but problematic process PS uses.
After running some images from file A, for instance, I now open File B. File B has several images I will combine into a pano. I create the pano, open it in PS and it says "Untitled_Panorama_1". I click Save As and if I do not watch what I am doing, it will not save it to the current File B but to File A. I find this to be true with any file name change. It will save it to the last file opened, not the current. Imagine finding a file under those circumstances! The only saving grace is if you still have the file in Open Recent under File, you can trace back to where it is stored and move it where it belongs.
The only way I have figured to defeat it is after opening to the new file in Bridge, close Bridge and reopen it. Now the Last and Recent are identical.
DXO never does this. I set the default save location to be the same as the Source. At first I thought that was fussiness, but now it makes sense. If I want to save it elsewhere, I know I want to do it and can pick it.
Makes for some interesting folder contents, to see wedding pictures saved in a wilderness folder!
Hmmm, maybe that was an omen!

    How to fix this?
    thanks

Yes, you need your own copy of WinXP (I used the one that came with VPC) but I'm afraid I have some good news/bad news to report. The good news is that WinXP does run a bit faster than VPC did on my dual processor G4 - the bad news is that XPs hardware detection DOES NOT - and I could find no way t force it - to recognize any USB or Firewire devices. Because I use Windows primarily to connect to USB GPS devices, this was a real letdown (and would be to users who need to, oh, I don't know, PRINT from Windows).
I'd love to hear from anyone has Windows actually functioning under OpenOSX Wintel - the website only goes as far a getting it to install and running Explorer (which I was able to do). I also had numerous keyboard problems: sometimes Windows would accept no input from the keyboard, sometimes it would reverse the caps lock key (on produced lowercase letters, off all uppercase). It also does not recognize the Apple Mighty Mouse as a two-button mouse. A number of these problems were - somehow - fixed by VPC which I never had a problem with when it came to USB devices (at least it DOES recognize a 'network card' and I can use Internet Explorer - whoopee!).
I'm going to play with this some more before throwing in the towel but I'm not so certain that I'm going to work towards the dual boot solution until I hear that Windows and Windows apps actually function - like being able to print or recognize a USB device.
Just getting Windows to install and run is of little good if it doesn't actually provide simple functionality.
I may copy and paste my original post in the Windows compatibility forum - see if any of those folks have found a working solution,

  • Computer won't recognize network printer - HP OJ Pro 8600

My computer and printer are both connected to the same wireless network, but my computer won't recognize the printer (using the host name, IP address, or otherwise).  It's maddening, because it worked when I first set it up a year ago and just recently stopped - I uninstalled and reinstalled everything.  My iPhone can pick up the printer and print wirelessly, but there's an issue when I try to connect my computer using the HP software.

Hi @petersaaron , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having issues utilizing your printer from your computer. I would like to the help with that!
I would recommend starting with a power reset.   Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would then suggest downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • How do I set Firefox in WinXP to print straight to my default printer rather than one of the others on my system.

    I use winXP SP3.
I have several printer options... fax, pdf Creator etc. My default Windows printer is on my network.
Whenever I print from Firefox the printer that comes up is the pdf Creator. I can select my default printer and it not a problem having to do so, just an annoyance.
I would have expected Firefox to remember my last choice and offer that again, but it does not. I haven't been able to find a way of altering the choice permanently. I have no idea why the unusual choice is made.

    Many Thanks.
Your suggestion does not actually work but it enabled me to get under the hood.
I have toggled the altered setting back to 'true'.
Next I right clicked '''print.print_printer''' and clicked the reset option.
I have restarted Firefox and all seems well. My default network laser printer came up first. I used it...ok. I then changed to my pdf printer and used it...ok. I then changed back to my default printer...ok. The next print I attempted came up with my default printer... good result!
Its fingers crossed now and I'll be careful of the resident dragons if I feel the need to mess with them again.

  • Set Default Printer based on user setting using Powershell script

    Hi
I would like to create a script that runs on user log off and captures the default printer (set manually by the user) and then another script to reapply the settings (saved upon log off) when the user logs back in.
This is because local printers are set as default printer (PDF Creator Programs) when we all use Network Printers so this means a user has to set default printer to the network printer all the time.
I have found this script to start with:
    $Printer = Get-WmiObject -namespace root\cimv2 -Query “select * from Win32_Printer Where Default = TRUE” -Impersonation 3 | select name | out-file C:\temp\Printer.txt
But the out file looks like this:
    name
    \\PrinterserverName\Accounts01
Which I dont see how it can be used on another script plus there are spaces after\Account01
    Any Ideas please?
    M
    Maelito

    Hi Maelito,
According to your description, you want to export the default printer name to text file, then read this printer name from text file and set the default printer via Powershell:
#save printer name to text file
    Get-WmiObject -namespace root\cimv2 -Query “select * from Win32_Printer Where Default = TRUE” -Impersonation 3 | select -ExpandProperty name | out-file C:\temp\Printer.txt
    # read printer name from text file and set default printer
    $name=get-content C:\temp\Printer.txt
    (Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Printer -Filter "Name='$name'").SetDefaultPrinter()
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.

  • Can Reader pick up the Default Page Size of a printer that is not the Windows Default Printer?

We have a web based application that generates PDF documents via Crystal Reports.
We are using Adobe Reader 8
The PDF pages are displayed within an Internet Explorer window where the the users then print the document.
The application is designed so the user only gets one chance to print the document (ie they cant come back and change printer settings if they happen to print the document out incorrectly)
The document needs to be printed on A3 paper, full duplex.
We have a printer set-up decidated to the printing of the documents generated by this application.  The default page size of this printer is set of A3.
If we set this dedicated printer as the Windows Default Printer we have no problems at all.  The default page size (A3) is picked up and the document is printed correctly.
If any other printer is set as the Windows Default Printer (eg one that has a default page size of A4), the users must obviously select the correct printer from the Print Dialogue Box -however when the user selects the dedicated A3 printer, the page size remains as A4 (page size of the Windows Default Printer).  This means the user must remember to change the paper size to A3 each time.
Out users find IT a struggle at the best of times - anything that makes the process simpler is very welcomed!
Is there a way to ensure the default page size of the printer is respected when that printer is not the Windows Default Printer?
    Thanks!

    No.

  • Preview Default Print Setting "Fit to Page" Problem

Preview.app in Snow Leopard has removed the option to print without scaling, and recreating this behaviour with the remaining options is quite complex and requires 4 extra steps.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Open a document in Preview.app, such as a PDF, of a known paper size.
    2. Select 'File' > 'Print…'
    3. Change the paper size to one where the default scale value with the default 'Scale to Fit:' 'Print Entire Image' is not 100%. This step is often unnecessary, as many documents will require reduction to include margins, even if the paper sizes match.
    4. Select 'Scale:'
    5. Select the scale % value.
    6. Delete the scale value.
    7. Input '100' in the scale value box using the keyboard.
    8. Press tab to avoid radar #7256827.
    9. Click 'Print'
    Expected Results:
Click on a single option to print at 100%, if by chance that wasn't the default option. This would have been one step.
    Actual Results:
Does what it says. Steps 4 through 8 are necessary to print at 100% in most cases.
    Regression:
This behaviour was as expected in OS X 10.5.x and previous versions, or we wouldn't be having this discussion.
    Notes:
Printing at 100% is the only scaling that is common enough to warrant a button to make it an easy one to get to. Preview.app itself even has an 'Actual Size' toolbar button, but has removed this function for printing.
Graphic designers (and other professionals) or specific applications (such as printing on pre-cut or pre-printed paper, labels, or DVDs) can commonly require printing at 100%, and using PDF to distribute documents makes Preview.app the most logical choice for many printing jobs.
Having something other than 100% as a default can cause expensive media to be ruined by a mis-scaled printout, unless these 4 (+1) steps are followed every time.
Most other apps, including Safari, Mail.app and TextEdit default to no scaling, making Preview.app an exception.
I am an architect and this is really annoying!
    Does anyone know a workaround?

    Sorry no workaround as yet...
I too am now sick of the amount of expensive paper I have wasted due to the Preview app default print setting of 'Scale to fit'.
    - No option to print at 100%, you have to manually input this information.
    - No way to change this default in preferences, you can change the opening viewing size of a doc to 100% though.
    - Doesn't remember the previous settings if you decide to reopen the doc and print another copy.
I also found that if I attempted to print an A4 doc with bleed and crop marks, it would set the default paper size to A4 and the annoying scale to fit would be set to 83%. If I then changed the scale by typing in 100% but don't hit enter for fear of the print starting and then simply use the drop down to change the paper to A3 and then change the orientation and then hit enter it ignores that you have changed the scale and prints your doc at 83% on A3 - Brilliant!
It's a shame to say that I will be going back to acrobat for pdfs!
If you can't put a 100% scale radio button on the print dialogue box either allow people to change the default in prefs or even better allow the presets to control paper size and scale of printing!
