Won't restart successfully after Tiger installation --- Help!

Howdy!
I'm finally updating to OS X from 9.2.2. Everything was humming along smoothly with the installation. My computer restarted after installation, but then hung for quite a while on the grey apple screen with the twirlygig at the bottom of the screen, and then, horror of all horrors, a big circle with a slash replaced the apple... and there it stays. I have to manually reboot the machine to get it to restart to either the old 9.2 partition or from the 10.4.3 installation DVD.
From the Tiger DVD, I've verified and repaired the disk and permission (if didn't come up with any errors, but I repaired it anyway).
I've re-installed the OS with all devices except the keyboard unplugged -- nothing changed.
Any ideas?
I'm trying to install it onto a 120 GB Maxtor internal drive that has not given me any problems in the past. The hd is partitioned for a 9 and X OS... I also still have the original 20 GB internal hd installed.
Should I try removing RAM that was added years ago? Or installing it onto the original 20 GB hd? Or will I have to try an Erase and Install? Will this option just erase the partition set up for OS X, or will it erase the entire hard disk?
Thanks for any assistance.

I'm actually unsure if the version of Disk Utility on the Tiger Install disc can do an erase and install on one partition of a partitioned hard drive or if the erase and install wipes the entire HD; I'll have to check into that when I can. There was in the past a known issue where OS X had to be installed on the first partition of a partitioned HD; I believe that's no longer true, but the default at startup for OS X is to look for the OS X System on the first partition (if you hold the 'x' key down at startup to boot into OS X, that's the expected location). If the OS 9 partition is the first partition, that may be throwing the OS X Install restart off. You might check to see if using Startup Manager to select the second partition works. I'd also rename the partition from "OS X" to somethhing else (say "OSTen"), just to be safe.

  • Computer won't start properly after Leopard installation attempt

Yesterday I tried to install Leopard 10.5.6 on my G5 (currently running Tiger 10.4.11) and ran into a ton of problems. First, a message came up preventing me from upgrading without erasing my hard drive. I decided to quit the installer and back up my drive before erasing it, but after trying to start up again on my main disk, the computer will no longer get past the Apple logo screen. It stays that way for several minutes, and the computer revs and revs until it's at max RPM, then the computer just shuts off. I can't access my data to back it up.
I did some internet research and tried started up from the install DVD again (which still works) and tried to repair my disk using Disk Utility. This didn't work and an error message came up: "Attempted to Repair Disk, attempt failed. Invalid Node Structure, Volume Check Failed. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit."
If anyone has any advice I would be VERY grateful, I am hoping to not have to have the computer repaired as I already have my other Mac out of service as well and the cost of repair has been high. I need to back up some important files before I update to Leopard, is there any way to do this while starting up from the DVD since my Startup disk doesn't work now? What happened??!!!

Is it possible that the piece stuck in the audio jack has resulted in turning off the internal speakers?
I would say that the Leopard installation is not 100%. Sometimes this happens. Or you may have a piece of software installed that mutes the speakers, and it needs to disable that. If it's not the latter, then I would erase the hard drive and reinstall from scratch. If that's not feasible then you can do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Qosmio g55-q804 won't restart properly after hibernation

my qosmio g55-q804 went into hibernation and now it won't restart properly....it restarts in the safe mode and when going in NORMAL mode, my original desktop appears however, it doesn't respond; my internet connectivity icon has a red X on it, and the programs don't repsond. it works ok in the safe mode with networking but i want to restore my laptop to operate in the normal mode. i've tried system restore while in the safe mode, removing the battery pack, removing the hard drive but to no avail. i'm reluctant at this point to do a full HDD recovery with my recovery CD's....please help! i'm not a computer whiz, and can't afford a new laptop right now

can i create a new account from the safe mode with networking?
I'm not sure. Try it while in Safe Mode and let us know.

Also, let us know how Windows responds when you boot clean (instead of to Safe Mode). You should be able to set this up while in Safe Mode.
       1. Open the System Configuration utility (msconfig.exe).
       2. On the General tab, click Selective startup and clear the Load startup items check box.
       3. On the Services tab, click the Hide all Microsoft services check box and click Disable all.
       4. OK out and restart the computer.

  • Stuck in restart after tiger installation

my g4 has been stuck in restart for 30 minutes since it finished installing tiger. what do i do?? i cant get it to do anything....

OK, what is this "CheckUpAgent" application? It isn't part of OS X, so I'm guessing you have it as a StartupItem. Tricky
You will need to look in several places to find this and disable it. I am assuming the application has been updated to use launchd, since there is no mention of SystemStarter. So you need to look in four places:
    "/System/Library/LaunchAgents"
    "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons"
    "/Library/LaunchAgents"
    "/Library/LaunchDaemons"
If the developer of "CheckUpAgent" has played by the rules, it should be one of the last two. The file you are looking for should be called something like com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent.plist, although they may have left off the "com.app4mac".
Now, to do this we must mount the disk to be writable, so after you have booted and run fsck -fy again, type this carefully !
/sbin/mount -uw /Notice the space before the hyphen and before the '/'. Then we'll look at these directories:
    cd /Library/LaunchAgents
ls -lIf you don't see the file there, then
    cd /Library/LaunchDaemons
    ls -land so on.
When you do find it, then we'll temporarily move it to the top level of your hard disk:
mv com.app4mac.CheckUpAgent.plist /but change the name according to what you find.
    Having done that, a
rebootshould allow you to try a normal boot again.
Make a note of any unexpected messages you see. Also if you do find the file write down the complete line from the ls -l command that shows it, since that will also show its ownership and permissions.
    Good luck!

  • Computer won't turn on after Panther installation

I installed Panther successfully on my iMac G5. After I hit "restart" the computer is stuck on gray and the wheel is turning but the computer never completely turns on. I have forced it shut and tried numerous times to restart the computer but it continues to do the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get the computer to start? Perhaps it won't start because the installation DVD is still in the computer. Is there some way to manually eject the DVD without the computer being turned on?

You may be right about the disk thing. Hold the mouse click down on startup, until the DVD is ejected.
If that fails, zap PRAM. Hold down optcnd+RP on startup, and listen for three bongs before you let go.

  • Dock won't hide/show after Tiger security update

I installed the Dec 27 Tiger security update last night (via SW update) and now the dock is behaving badly. I had it set to automatically show/hide, but it would not show anymore after the update. I always install sec updates, so I did also do the previous one without any problems.
So far I've done this to try to solve the problem:
    - I changed the settings to turn hiding off and the doc appears and works correctly in that mode. The only problem with it seems to be that it won't show after it hides with hiding turned on.
    - I repaired permissions
    - I shut down and restarted
    - I did a safe-mode restart and a regular restart
    - I trashed my doc preferences, restarted, and recreated the configuration of items I like.
    - I tried removing the preference called /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dockfixup.plist which had no effect, so I put it back. (It's dated 2006 but I have no further info about it.)
Also, oddly, it seems that my system menus are strictly pull-down now. I am almost sure they had some drop-down behavior before, because I keep clicking on main menu items expecting the submenu to persist, and it doesn't. If I'm not imagining this, perhaps the two issues are related?
I don't have any system mods or Finder replacement apps.
Are there any other dock-related files that I could replace from my backup to try to fix this issue?
Did the update do something specifically to change the dock?
I really hate to reinstall and reupdate from scratch to fix such a minor problem, but it is 100% annoying. Ideas and commiseration welcome.

Thank you. I didn't know you could remove the whole folder without wreaking havoc. I will try another user account for thoroughness.
    New info:
I discovered this morning that both of these problems do not occur with my Contour mouse, only with the Logitech trackball. The trackball has a brand new problem at startup today, which is that it acts like it's constantly right-button-down. It selects only.
So perhaps its a driver or mouse hardware issue. I think it's suspicious that it started immediately after the update, but since the trackball did not come with a driver, I am not sure I can further troubleshoot it myself. I'll dig around in the system and on the net a bit to see, but I'm probably going to buy another pointing device in order to resolve this. The trackball is only about 2 months old, but maybe it's filled up with cat hair. ... There's a joke in there somewhere.

  • IPhoto 04 and iMovie 04 missing after tiger installation

hi guys, hope anybody can help me.
got my hands finally on mac os x tiger, so formated my hard disk and installed it. afterwards I tried to reinstall iLife 04 by using the recovery dvds for mac os x panther, which were delivered together with my powerbook 15", 1,33 Ghz.
installation went fine as I could see (chose the complete install) but after finishing it, iphoto and imovie are missing now. idvd and all other included stuff was installed completely. I tried to install it again but the installation programm tells me that there are no further packages to install left on the dvds.
if i search for iphoto or imovie with spotlight, it only finds some automator skrips but not the complete programmes. I also checked the dvds for the install packages to install it manually but couldn´t find anything.
so...any ideas how i can restore iphoto and imovie on my system? don´t wanna reinstall everything completely

Try using Pacifist to locate them on the restore disks and extract and install.

  • Net access mess after Tiger installation

Could somebody please help me with some advice on how to deal with what upgrading to Tiger has done to my internet access?
I have a G4 800 Mhz i-mac, and was on OSX 10.2.8. before my upgrade, using Safari, and increasingly Firefox, to get on the net through a broadband provider, and Mail for my emails.
Ten days ago I installed Tiger, putting it on a separate, and empty, partition of my HD as if it were a basic instal, and when the option appeared to transfer my applications, settings and folders from the partition with 10.2.8, I clicked to transfer. The transfer was done, and the result has worked fine in every respect except access to the net.
Mail access has not been affected. But with both Safari and Firefox I find that while sometimes they work just as fast as before in accessing websites and their pages, at other times they are impossibly slow, or act as if I had no connection to the web at all, and on occasions even show a message saying connection lost - even though at the same time Mail works as normal for both sending and receiving messages. I’ve talked to my broadband provider tech support, and they say the fault has to be with my browsers, but I can’t find it and so cure it.
The only change I made in my Applications after installing Tiger was to download Skype. Could this have have anything to do with why my net access through Safari (now 2.04) and Firefox (now 1.5.0.7) has turned erratic? If not, what could be the answer, and what the cure?
I would be most grateful for any advice and help offered.
    Paul

First off, have you Repaired Permissions with Disk Utility yet?
The issue does sound a little bit like DNS issues... if you have nothing for that in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:, then try...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
If something is in there try erasing them.

  • ITunes won't recognize speakers after Leopard installation!  What's wrong?!

After I installed Leopard, I noticed my iTunes wasn't recognizing my Harmon Kardon sub connected via USB. This sometimes will happen, so I did what I would always do to fix the situtation - restart the computer. However, this also didn't work. So I tried another solution, plugging in the speaker with a song playing as this would also work when I had this problem with OS 10.3.9. However, with Leopard, the song started to break up as the sub tried to come on, but couldn't. Then, when I hit pause, not a single song would play! With the sub connected or not! I would have to restart my computer to get iTunes to work again. This is same, new version of iTunes I was using with Panther and I have installed all the Leopard updates and am still having this problem. Anyone know what this is or how I can fix it? Thanks!!!

I think it is a QuickTime problem. My 10.4.11 mini just lost its iSub after the QT update.
The amusing part is that when I select the headphones as sound out, the iSub shows up and actually plays along. When I choose the USB speakers, iSub disappears.
Sorry I don't have a solution at this time. But you now know that you are not alone.

Ok i'm installing OS X Tiger using my iPod Mini because my G4 Cube doesn't have a DVD drive (CD-RW) I erased my ipod first then restored the image (.cdr) to it. OS X (10.3.9) reads it as the install DVD fine. I restart.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I understand the problem of dialup and huge downloads. Unfortunately it is a limitation of the technology. Improving dialup connectivity can be done by changing the dialup script sometimes, but for the amount of time it takes to download some of these upgrades, I strongly recommend you visit a local authorized reseller near you and ask if any will let you bring a flash drive or blank CD to have the updates burnt for you that you find you need.
There are these things to consider when you upgrade:
