Won't search for wireless networks

My iPhone 4S (iOS 5.1.1) won't search for wireless networks.  At all.  It's irritating because I can't backup or sync without being on a wireless network.
If I go to Settings > Wi-Fi, I show that it's on but the wheel just spins and spins on "Choose a Network" but none show up, even though I know there are at least 5 in my immediate area.
I've tried turning off the Wi-Fi, then on again.
I've tried resetting the Network Settings.
I've tried turning the phone off then on again.
So far, nothing has worked.
Any suggestions?

OK, I see you indicated that you turned the phone off and back on again, but did you do a soft reset? Hold down the Home button and the Sleep button at the same time and hold them down until you see the silver Apple (ignore the red slider if it appears). This will restart your iPhone but you won't lose any settings or anything.
Cheers,
GB

  • Set-up D110a as USB, but cant print as it searches for wireless network

Hi,  I have a different twist on wireless.  I set up the D110a in my daughters college room. For a variety reasons i.e. don't want to buy a router, we set it up as USB.  Worked great.  Now a week later its not letting her print because its looking for a wireless connection.  Is there a way to disable wireless?  Another solution? Thanks

Yes, it is possible for someone in range of your printer to connect to the printer and send a print job if you don't secure your printer or router with a passphrase. It all depends on your neighborhood I guess.
In your current wireless printing setup, wireless direct is turned off as you don't currently need it, and your network printing is secured from outside intruders with the passphrase of your router.
When you enable wireless direct with security, you will be secured from outside intruders with the passphrase of your printer. If you enabled wireless direct without security, the printer will be open to unsolicited prints since there is no passphrase.
    Best Regards.

  • My iPad2 quit connecting to wireless network. Won't turn on, won't search for networks, no connection

A couple of days ago, my 1 month old iPad2 quit searching for wireless networks, won't recognize my home network, and the wi-fi connection won't stay on. I can switch it on, but it doesn't do anything (won't search for wifi) and as soon as I move away from that window, it switches back to "OFF". Anyone have a fix for that, or is it a problem that can only be resolved with returning the product for repair or replacement?

If no change after resetting network settings on your iPad and/or after restoring your iPad with iTunes as a new iPad or not from the iPad's backup, your iPad has a hardware problem.

You really should change both the wireless network name and password to avoid potential conflicts with the old and new settings.
Suggest you give that a try.

  • TS1398 this didn't help me at all. out of the clear clue my iPad can't even scan for wireless networks. even when I type in my home wireless network name. my phone can connect to it but for whatever reason my iPad won't. nothing I've tried works. I'm ****

believe me I've tried EVERTHING and my iPad still 'can't scan for wireless networks'. it happened all of a sudden and is really really frustrating. I really don't want to have to drive 40 minutes to the nearest 'genius bar'. I'm about ready to break this thing over my knee. I've even tried the frig trick. it worked for about 30 seconds. and then? nothing. any non sarcastic suggestions?

  • [SOLVED] Scan for wireless networks at boot

Lately I've been making extensive use of public wifi hotspots (libraries FTW), as mobile broadband is simply too unreliable to give me a persistent (and cheap) connection.
Is it possible to use some combination of netcfg and wifi-select (or similar tools) to scan for wireless networks at boot?
I've already got entries in rc.conf for my mobile dongle and automatically detecting ethernet connections, but it's pointless adding entries for whichever wireless profiles I might use as searching for these and discovering they don't exist just needlessly slows the boot process, whereas running something similar to wifi-select at boot (with a timeout so an unattended boot won't wait for me to make a selection) would avoid this.
    * Obviously I could just wait until the system has booted and then bring up the interface I wanted manually, but generally I only reboot my system after updates, and I only download updates at a wifi hotspot, so I was hoping to automate something here.

  • Mac Mini - Core Solo - Won't See Any Wireless network

I have a Mac Mini, first gen Intel, Core Solo, that won't see any wireless networks. However, it will see my extreme basestation, and my two airport express devices over bonjour, which makes me think that the wireless device is working.
I've reset the PMU, with no luck.
    Any suggestions?

Does an Airport card show in the system profiler?
Is Airport switched on in your mini - the Airport icon in the menu bar should show at least grey bars rather than an empty white 'fan' shape?
With Airport on, when you click on the Airport icon, does it show any network?
If you click on 'Join Other Network' and type the name of the wifi network you run, what error message does the system give?
How far away from the wifi base station is the mini? What kind of structures and environment is it in?
If you move the mini to be in close proximity to the wifi base station, does it show any signal?
When you download a copy of AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) and run it, what does it show for signals, noise etc?
How is the mini seeing any wifi devices via Bonjour - do you have it wired into your network? If so, the fact that the devices appear via bonjour doesn't mean they are transmitting wifi, nor that they are in range.
By the way, the Core Solo mini doesn't have a PMU to reset. If you used the PMU reset procedure it won't have helped, and may actually have caused problems. The correct procedure for an Intel-based mini is an SMC reset, as follows:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, *making sure the power button is not being pressed* at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

Bought 4th Gen 3TB TC - streaming TV over the internet is now so slow and now is constantly buffering.  It seems the Airport Utility is always 'searching for new networks' - don't know if this is the problem.  It's not the internet speed as checked that.  I took my old router upstairs and was streaming TV via my ipad seamlessly - the same program via the TC was constantly buffering.
I just expected to be able to plug in the TC, so a simple set-up and experience wireless both upstairs and downstairs in my house.  For some reason the range is low and speed veru disappointing.
I am far from being an IT expert but I would welcome advice about setting up this TC so we can enjoy the product as it was designed.  Please HELP!

No silver bullet........but my suggestions may drive you in the right direction.
    1.  Unplug the power cable from the TC and wait 10-15 minutes before powering back up.   Seriously wait!
Proceed to #2 if this dosen't help.
    2.  Unplug the power cable from the TC, ubplug the power cable from your Broadband Modem (assuming it's a cable modem), disconnect ethernet, and cable from modem.
2a.  Wait 10-15 minutes then re-connect cable, ethernet, and power back to modem (your modem should power up unless you have a power switch)  wait for all the modem lights to come on EXCEPT activity.
2b.  Connect ethernet from modem to TC, and plug in the power cable to TC.
Proceed to #3 if this dosen't help.
    3.  Reconfigure the TC.........Read here........http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
All really simple to do....if you need additional help let me (us) know.

  • Can i stop airport from searching for additional networks after connecting to a network

Airport keeps searching for additional networks after connecting to my wireless router.  Can I stop this?  does this effect system performance?

No, it doesn't affect performance. And, it only occurs prior to connection to the desired network or when you click on the menubar icon for Airport.

  • Stuck interrupt when scanning for wireless networks (Athero chipset)

I'm working on getting wireless running on my Thinkpad T40 with an Atheros AR5211 a/b adapter. The ath5k module loads automatically, and the dmesg output seems to indicate that it is properly detecting the card:
    % dmesg|grep ath
    [ 4.767272] ath5k 0000:02:02.0: registered as 'phy0'
    [ 5.042780] ath: EEPROM regdomain: 0x61
[ 5.042787] ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a direct regpair map
    [ 5.042793] ath: Country alpha2 being used: 00

    [ 5.478553] ath5k: phy0: RF2111 2GHz radio found (0x23)
I brought the interface up using ip:
    % ip link show wlan0
4: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether [redacted] brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
The trouble comes when I try to scan for wireless networks. I run "sudo iw dev wlan0 scan". At this point, the system becomes very sluggish, and the load average began to monotonically increase. The scan never completes; I left it for 15-20 minutes and cut it off when the load passed 3.5. The load average did not go down after iw was killed. Checking in top, the CPU was pretty evenly split between a kworker process and ksoftirqd, even with the scan terminated.
I've searched around, and while there are all manner of problems reported with getting various wireless configurations to work, no one seems to get tripped up at the scanning phase like this. Does anyone know of diagnostics I could try (or perhaps other scan tools?) to narrow down what is actually causing the CPU to get hammered?

I got a chance to play around with this a bit more, trying wireless_tools this time:
    % sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable
As before, the load average then continues to increase until the system becomes unusable. This would lead me to believe that I have a driver or kernel issue, since that would be the commonality between the two tools.
The other interesting output is this:
    % dmesg|tail
[ 280.973316] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
[ 280.989985] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now

[ 281.049984] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
[ 281.064543] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
[ 281.079983] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
[ 281.094544] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
[ 281.109122] ath5k: phy0: too many interrupts, giving up for now
Looking at longer tails, this message repeats many many times, interspersed with:
    net_ratelimit: 321 callbacks suppressed
With various values for 321. Some interrupt getting stuck would make sense for why the load average blows up, but I really don't know how to fix that ...
I verified on the ath5k site (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … rted_Chips) that my chip is supported:
    % lspci
02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR5211 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5001X 802.11ab] (rev 01)
Any tips for what might cause a stuck interrupt like that?

  • TS1398 cannot scan for wireless networks

My phone will not connect to home wi-fi. My DH's iphone is connecting fine, but mine won't and it doesn't list any options for network connections. wi-fi is ON. Ask to join networks is ON. Error msg "cannot scan for wireless networks". I turned the phone off and also reset network. No changes....Thanks in advance for your help

I have had this issue of not scanning for WiFi networks as well. I just tried the following, and it has worked for me, at least for the last 12 hours or so:
    1. Turn ON Airplane Mode
    2. Power off the phone normally: Hold power and home keys for 6 sec, then swipe the "power off" slider.
    3. Waited 1 minute
    4. Turn on phone, wait for it to reboot itself
    5. Turn OFF airplane mode,
Immediately, all WiFi networks popped up, and I could select my home network with the same saved password etc.
Of course, this might not work for every case, but it's easier than a phone restore and worth a try.

Did drop the phone yesterday but am hoping i havent broken some internal part and that someone can point me in the right direction!!

It sounds like you DID break something, or at least loosen a connection when you dropped it.
