Won't shut down, won't empty trash, can't force quit, hangs forever

Hi all. Multiple problems here with MacBook Air. Can't even give you the specific OS because of the hanging problem. In brief the issues are:
1. It won't shut down unless by using the power button.
2. It won't empty the trash. Nor will it stop emptying the trash. All attempts to do so are met with either the warning that an application is in use (only the trash is in use) or it hangs
3. It is impossible  to force quit. The usual keystrokes have no effect and in any case the third keystroke - usually esc- is shown under the Finder as an arrow comIng out of the upper left (open) corner of a semi-circle. Although this is a Spanish keyboard there is no corresponding key anywhere on the computer
4. Any attempts to open any other application while engaging in the fruitless attempts to empty the trash are met with the dreaded beach all of death.
As a consequence I can only use the MacBook Air by not emptying an ever growing amount of trash. This can't possibly be good.

David ...
Hopefully you can boot in Safe Mode so you can find out which OS X is installed. Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Then click the Apple menu  top left in the screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac
Note the version number.
Then click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Post back with the OS X version please.

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

  • Mini Server won't shut down/won't start up until power is pulled

I am running OS X 10.9.1 on a Mac Mini Server 2.6 GHz Intel Core I7 / 16 GB ram. I have been having issues shutting down my Mac. I start the shut down process but it gets to a gray screen/beach ball and will sit there forever until you hold the power button down. I tried shut down again with all external drives disconnected and get no change.
Also, if I leave Mac on sometimes I can login normally and sometimes I find out that it has actually shut down completely by itself. It is not sleeping. I can't seem to turn it on unless I pull power cable.
I have checked temp of unit and it appears to have plenty of ventilation felling only slightly warm to touch. My keyboard is wired and I have a Bluetooth touch pad.
I re-installed the latest "Mavericks" just to make sure but no change. Seems like the shut down issue may have started 1st before I upgraded. When I do get Mac to start back up everything seems normal, no errors. The only thing barking is Google Chrome stating that I can start where I left off. I have not caught it shutting down so I thought it had something to do with the Energy Saving settings but it is at the "Default" setting.
The Mac is definately off and not sleeping, no light on front.
Any tips or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Z

OK, I tried setting Energy Savings to 1 minute. The Mac shut down and would not power back up via the power button, had to pull power plug. So it seems to be tied to the Energy settings.

  • MacPro won't shut down

In Finder I scroll to shut down. The icons disappear but the computer won't shut down. I had to do a hard shut down. When I turned it back on, nothing had changed.. I am able to find the finder in the the dock. So, how do I get my computer to turn off? Thanks.

I was having a similar problem with mine, and I found out it was caused by a corrupt plist file from migrating old files over from my previous Mac. Specifically, the com.apple.loginitems.plist and com.apple.loginwindow.plist files.
Once I trashed them and restarted, everything worked just fine.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11

i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
    thanks

Some hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

  • 10.5.8 won't shut down after bad SD disk removal.  It stops all applications but won't get past the final shut down screen.

I had a disk error with a SD disk from my camera.  Removed the disk from the card reader and got the Disk Removal Error alert.  Then the whole thing froze up on me.  Noting else would eject, No other apps would shut down and basically nothing worked.  I couldn't shut down so I removed the battery.  Restarted the computer ok then tried to repair the SD disk in question.  No luck on the repair so ejected it again.  Then tried to restart OS and it won't shut down again except everything still works but it just won't shut down.

  • Mini Mac won't shut down!

Core Duo won't shut down or log out or re-start but can sleep. Can use terminal to kill processes but it is not an application causing the problem. The output is to a TV via S-Video and am using wireless keyboard via USB.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    hello to the mac world

  • Battery gets very hot during use and doesn't last long, fan runs at high speed, computer won't shut down

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
    Thanks.

  • Windows won't shut down

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.

What makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this?

  • My mini won't shut down

when i try to shut down my mini, it keeps running. it gets to the point of logging out and i can see just the plain desktop picture. the fan is going, the monitor is on. it won't actually turn off. i've waited for 30 minutes. finally, i'll just unplug it (probably not good.)
    any suggestions?
    thank you.

Usually if the system refuses to shut down it's because a process is running that it can't force-quit, often related to an external device, but sometimes an installed application attempting to communicate.
Often the only way to resolve this is to power down by pressing and holding the power button for 5-10 seconds. This is not an elegant shutdown, particularly if the system is attempting to write to the hard drive in the hung activity, so on the next reboot, it is wise to run Disk Utility to verify the internal hard drive and ensure it hasn't developed a problem.
There's no simple way to troubleshoot this sort of problem since the devices connected to the system and the software in use all vary from system to system, but it's best to start by disconnecting all external devices other than keyboard mouse and screen and booting the system, then trying to shut down again before running any application. If that works fine, then it's a problem in an app or driver or external device. If not, it's in MacOS or hardware.
If the latter, it's probably a good starting point to repair permissions using Disk Utility, though sometimes a little more drastic spring-cleaning is needed using one of the general purpose utilities such as OnyX or YASU (YASU being my favorite for simplicity of use and the lack of options that can do more harm than good). Running all YASU tasks can help a range of behavioral problems. Another good utility to have on hand for these type of problems is Preferential Treatment, which can be run on both system and user levels to find damaged or corrupt properly list (plist) files which can also cause unpredictable behavior.
If the former, then it would help to know what devices and software you are using, but troubleshooting would typically need each to be connected/used individually to see at what point the system then began to have problems again.
