Won't start properly because of too much stuff on desktop - how do I delete stuff if it won't start up now?

I was trying to move photos to an external hard drive because my startup disk was full and I accidentally dropped them onto the desktop. Now my computer won't start properly because of all the stuff on the desktop and I don't know how I can fix that?

Start up in safe mode. Hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting and check that you can start up in safe mode. Then, choose all the items you want to transfer in Desktop by pressing Command and A keys, and move them to the external drive.
If you have any file in Desktop that you don't want to transfer, simply click it while pressing the Command key

I'm trying to upgrade to Yosemite, buy it won't let me because I don't have Mavericks! How do I get Mavericks?

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

While this article doesn't cover the exact same issue, the troubleshooting steps within should apply and are worth a shot:

  • HT4759 How can i delete an old iCloud account and start using my own using my Apple ID? If I don't have the old password??

How can i delete an old iCloud account and start using my own using my Apple ID? If I don't have the old password??

If your device is signed into an old iCloud ID that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library).  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).

How do I delete my old Gamecenter profile and start a new one?

I suggest changing the existing ID rather than creating a new one, all purchases are forever linked to the ID that bought and can never be transferred, you can change all detauils about your ID here:

  • IChat randomly disconnects because of "too much activity"

I've noticed this problem recently -- in the last few weeks. iChat/AIM will just disconnect me and say that I've been logged out due to too much activity and I should try logging in again in a few minutes.
In years past I've experienced problems where if I type too many IMs in a short enough period of time, I'm blocked from sending further IMs for a minute or so. When I first saw this new message a few weeks ago I was puzzled because I wasn't typing that much. Then it happend a few more times, and just today it's happened twice, once when I hadn't typed anything for at least 10 minutes.
Is anyone else having this problem? I assume it's an AIM server issue, but I'm curious if it's only affecting the iChat client or if it affects other clients as well. Anyone have a clue?

    Hi Josh,
It is as you suggested much more likely to be an AIM server thing.
At this time of year through to about the first week of December AIM do a Deep Clean of unused Screen names and allow them back on to the Available list so to speak. These are the screen names that people havew registered but have fallen out of use.
OF course they may be in someone else's Buddy list (And never show up if Off line Buddies are not displayed) Therefore they those names are on other servers that hold the Buddy List.
Clearing them out causes things to go out of synch. It used to cause problems about four times a year when some people could not get on line for some time. (Dec being worst)

  • Too much caching in 2008, how can I limit file-cache?

2008 Server with enough RAM, client copies a server stored file to the local drive, the server "eats" up all his ram, and when the server hits the limit it slows down to crawl speed, like he would be swapping out his cache too. Especially annoying if the server runs hyper-v guests, they nearly stop. I saw that effect on a lot of servers, but all my searches failed. 2008-R2 does not show that annoying effect, so I hope again it can be adjusted in 2008.
See this screenshot (Update interval of taskmanager is 5 seconds): http://csb-filderstadt.homepage.t-online.de/Too-much-caching.png
Server 2008 enterprise, 16 GB RAM, 2 Quad-core, uses 650 MB (the hyper-v guests are not running) when without load. One client copies a .vhd file of about 70 GB from the server to himself. The network speed is OK, about 100 MBytes/s, copy speed slows down to about 80 MB/s when the RAM limit is reached.
But how can I prevent that the simple file cache eats up all RAM, and then slows down the machine to crawl, including all hyper-v guest (if they are running). Opening a taskmanager takes about 1 minute when the limit is reached, normally less than a second.
Is there a setting in the registry so I can either limit the RAM used for caching, or a way to tell the filecache to leave more free RAM for the actual work?

    Guys,
This is an old post but I have been looking everywhere for a solution.
    Below is the server config:
    Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit
    12 GB Ram
    HyperV - 2 Virtual
Virtual 1 - 1 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
Virtual 2 - 2 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
    Exchange 2010 on Physical server
less than 10 users on exchange
Current Mail box per user - approx 3 GB
    AV - Nod32
    BES Express on Physical server
When I reboot the server the Memory usage is around 60% but slowly store.exe starts to eat the memory and finally it reaches 98% and then server hangs. This is so regular that sometimes I have to reboot the server 3 or 4 times a week.
BTW, I tried to limit the memory usage to 3GB via ADSI after googling but store.exe keeps on using and there was no use making this change.
    ADSI change: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax = 393216
Can someone please please help me.
    Regards
    J
Your setup is wrong for your usage.
    My recommendation would be:
1 Virtual Exchange with 8 GB RAM (or 6GB with dynamic up to 8GB) and four virtual CPU's
1 Virtual Blackberry Server with 2 GB RAM and two virtual CPU's.
Host machine: Only AV and Hyper-V, nothing else, not even connected to an active directory domain if not REALLY needed.
This will solve your memory issues without requiring hacking 'round the cache settings of Exchange.

  • Too much browser siding! How do I get rid of it?

When i view my page in the browser there is too much blank space and a horizonal scroll bar. How do i get rid of that? i've tried everything! Then, when i view my page in the "design" mode and zoom out, it shows my page and then behind it is the gray background which i think is the cuprit!
    Need help please!
    thanks!

    Can you supply a link?
The grey background is not the culprit as all it is is a browser fill which you can change using the browser fill tool.
You most likely have an empty box or other element that is off to the side. Open the page in your design view and do a CTRL/A (PC) or a CMD/A (Mac) and select all. That will hilite all the elements on the page even the ones that are empty and you can't see. You likely have an empty box over to the side.

  • Start up disc is full, permenant blue screen! How can i delete files to create space?

please see above fpr my question

The issue I have is my Mac must be so full that it's not letting me do this. When I try and start in 'safe mode' it doesn't let me. All I get is a blue screen that I've left for over 30mins but does nothing apart from go into a screen saver.
I'm pretty sure I've backed up everything to an external hard drive, so I did have a thought about wipiing the computer competely and then putting everyhting back onto the Mac from the external hard drive. Just a thought but ideally I don't really want to do as I'm not sure how to do it.
Does anyone have any ideas of how I can delete documents or any ideas on what I can delete to free up some space so the Mac boots up properyl...?!?!
    Help will be much appreciated!

  • Starting my computer last too much

Since I downloaded OS X Lion to start my computer every time I turned it on or restart, it last to much, almost the time Windows need to start.
Anybody knows how to fix this, if I have to format something...?
    Thanks in advance!

Try restarting it from the install disc, then run Disk Utility and repair permissions and also repair the disk.

  • Firefox 3.6 won't load properly because of the error "Proxy server refusing connections".

I tried to download Firefox 3.6 but it wouldn't finish loading because of the message " Proxy server refusing connections". How do I over ride this problem? The last couple of days my firefox 3.5.2 has been crashing or locking up almost every time I opened it. It got so frustrating that I tried downloading 3.6 to see if it would work any better. No luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I run Windows 2000 XP.

Go to Tools --> Options --> Advanced --> Network --> Settings and choose "Do not use Proxy" to see if that helps.
