Won't startup (Powerbutton lights then goes out)

2 of my G4 lab computers won't powerup. When you press on the powerbutton it will light up temporarly for couple seconds then go out.
Any suggestions?

Hi, and welcome to the Discussions!
Do a PMU reset on each of the affected machines. Also, note that a weak or dead battery in a Mac can cause this. Check Texas Mac Man's tutorial regarding this.

  • Macbook Pro won't start up, white light turns on, then goes out.

My Macbook Pro froze, so I hit the power button, and now it will not turn on.
When I press the power button the white light on the front comes on, and then goes out after about 6 seconds along with that noise it normally makes when turning off. Also if I cover both speakers the light fades.
This used to happen to me pretty regularly, and in the past it seems just a matter of giving it 24hrs and then trying to turn it on and it usually fixes itself by then. But I've started taking on freelance clients so I can't deal with this crap anymore and would like to know why this is happening. I've taken it to Genius's before but by the time I get there it is turning on again, and they have no answers for me.

You could try reseting the PRAM/NVRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379, see section titled "Resetting PRAM and NVRAM") or reseting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).

  • Airport Extreme light flashes green, amber, then goes out

When I pug in the Airport Extreme the led status light flashes green, amber, then goes out. Matters not if I press the reset button, unplug and press, or anything else.
So it seems I have power, but it will not work, and the light goes out.
    Any Ideas?

    How old is it?
See if you have a 12v power supply of around 2A around.. and try that.. sometimes the power supply goes.. but often it is the internal supplies.. in which case you cannot really do anything but replace it.
If it is less than 3years old and you have apple care on a computer Apple might replace it.. if you match all the requirements. outside 3years.. buy a new one.

    Priscilla,
if your Mac is still in warranty, then you should contact the Argentinian technical support service. If it is out of warranty, then we can try to lend a hand. (We’re just fellow Apple product users here.)

  • Powerbook backlight - turns on with computer, then goes out

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble with my Powerbook G4's (DVI, 667MHz) backlight.
The problem is this: On power-up, the backlight turns on, then goes out, never to come on again.
I've swapped the inverter and cable, but the problem persists.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello everyone,
I think I might have the same problem. When I open my Powerbook the backlight will turn on for about a second and then turn off. Nothing seemed to help it, it would just return randomly after restarting, letting it rest for a while, plugging into external monitor. I took it to a genuis bar last year and they couldn't figure it out and wanted to send the hard drive to be reformatted. I couldn't part with it so I kept it with the problems.
I figured out that when it's plugged into a power supply it is more likely to shut off. But other than that, I have no idea what it is, and at times it is still random. Does the power supply have anything to do with the inverter board? Sorry for my ignorance, I am not tech savvy.
    Any ideas?

  • G5 won't startup from any source w/out kernel panic

I've got a Power Mac G5 dual 2GHz 1.5GB RAM, 160GB HD. It's running 10.5.6. It kernel panicked the other day while I was at work and when I came home the fan was running really loudly and the screen o' death was up. Tried restarting a few times and each time when the gray screen with the Apple logo comes on it panics again after a few seconds. Tried starting up with a Leopard install disc and it does the same thing. Single user mode, still can't get to prompt it panics in the less elegant UNIX-y screen o' death.
The only thing I can do is startup in Firewire target disk mode or open firmware. I've tried resetting nvram in OF but that did nothing.
Anybody got an idea of what could be causing this, or anything I can do besides backup my data and ship it off to a repair center? Thanks in advance for any clues.

Pull the hard drive(s) and try.
Hopefully you have external backups; a solid UPS; Alsoft Disk Warrior or TechToolPro.
Then try booting into OF again. Normally that is the first thing I would do, and if it won't do even that, then start looking at resetting PMU; pulling RAM; checking video card; AND pull out your Apple Hardware Test CD.

  • Quicksilver Power Light Not Going Out On Shutdown

I shutdown a Quicksilver I've been working on. The light on the power button, and seems a little dimmer than normal. Now the computer won't startup. Have disconnect the power chord, but the light come back on when I reconnect the power chord. What can I do?

    Hi, Jim -
You stated the problem clearly enough.
Many models, particularly G3s but also many G4s, will exhibit starting problems when the internal battery is too weak or dead. The expected life of such batteries is about 4 or 5 years, considerably less if the machine is unplugged regularly or for an extended period.
"PMU" stands for the Power Management Unit. When it gets out of kilter (which can happen from a weak or dead battery, or as the result of a power outage), odd starting problems will occur. Fortunately it is easily reset.
There are another couple of possibilities:
    • The power supply unit may have gone bad.
    • The front panel board (a small printed circuit board behind the power button, on which the button is mounted) has gone bad. Relatedly, the small ribbon cable which connects that board to the main logic board may have got caught beween frame parts when the side door was last closed.
It is better to first eliminate the two possibilities I gave above before assuming that either of these others may pertain.

  • My iPhone screen is frozen on white light (then goes to black).  I tried to reset with no luck.  The phone will ring but can't pick up a call.

My iPhone screen shows only a white light when on, then goes to black.
I tried to reset, with no success, and I
synced to computer again, with no luck either.

Try to set it up as new device, explained here:
How to back up your data and set up as a new device
First without using the backup, in case it contains corrupt data.
If it works after that, use the backup to restore from.

  • When I plug my shuffle in, it blinks yellow several times and then goes out. It wont charge

    Hi aaliyafrommarkham,
In order to troubleshoot this, I would recommend that you start with an SMC reset. Information on this procedure can be found here:

  • I have the ishuffle 2nd generation. When I plug in, itunes recognizes it but it will not charge. The green light flashes a few times but then goes out. I'm not sure if the battery is dead or if something else can be done. Any advice?

I have the ishuffle 2nd generation. When I plug it it, itunes recognizes it but the light flashes green a few times and then stops. It is not charging. Is the battery dead or can something else be wrong? Any advice??

To rule out a problem with the shuffle's onboard software, I would try a Restore on the shuffle using iTunes.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Settings screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.
If that does not help, you should do a test to confirm there is not a problem on the USB port, such as lack of power to operate the iPod and charge it battery.  Shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices including hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.
If that does not help, it is more likely that the problem is a hardware problem on the shuffle, such as the battery.
