Won't stay off

*My iPod touch will not stay off. Everytime I turn it off and slide the red button to off the ipod goes off and then come right back on. I have reset and restored the ipod and it still doesn't want to turn off. What is up?*

*Well, I contacted Apple and they are sending me a box for service. This thing is the second iPod touch I have had in 2 weeks. The first one, purchased from Best Buy, had a bunch of dead pixels and now this. Should I take my invisible shield off before I send it in? I don't want them to blame this issue on something I did to it.*

  • When I boot up my Mac, Messages opens automatically. I quit the app, but it just re-opens itself. It won't stay off!!! I can't figure out what's wrong with it!

For the past few months, my Mac has been acting weird. EVERY time I boot up the computer, Messages opens automaticallly (I am runing OS X 10.8.x). I quit the app, but it just re-opens a few seconds later! It just won't stay off! I've looked it up online and nothing helps. I have no idea what to do!!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • MBP display won't stay off, wakes from sleep

I have a newish 15" MBP, 1680 display, hooked up to a Dell external monitor when it's at home. When I go to bed I cut power to the display via control-shift-eject, but generally don't put the computer to sleep overnight.
With this new machine, after it's been running for a while (as little as a day, or as long as a couple weeks), the displays will come on again in the night. Once this happens, the displays won't stay off for longer than about five seconds. If I then put the machine to sleep, it'll wake itself up minutes or hours later (generally not long enough to miss a Time Machine interval). The only cure is rebooting.
I tried an SMC reset, but that fix only lasted about as long as any other reboot.
I've since tried systematically removing every peripheral (a USB hub, the external display, any directly-connected iOS devices) and testing display-off after each; no change. I've turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then disabled Bluetooth on the computer, turned off wifi, quit every menu extra (jitouch, Viscosity, Dropbox, Pastebot, Fastscripts, Transmit, Teleport), and quit every running application. The problem remains repeatable after every step.
It's repeatable at the moment — any suggestions for other things to try, preferably short of the reboot which temporarily masks the problem? I'm a little concerned that it's going to manifest at some point while I have the laptop sitting in a bag, which will then cook itself.
I'm on 10.6.4 now, the problem started on 10.6.3.
    Thanks.

Try checking the system logs in Applications/Utilities/Console.app for clues. The entries carry time stamps. Usually a wake event will leave some trace. By matching time stamps to the time of occurrence you may find the culprit.

  • HT4203 My data and 3G won't stay off. It comes bak on almost instantly.

I try to shut data and 3G off to save battery but now it won't stay off. It turns bak on in a matter of seconds. What is wrong

This ***** because I like to listen to music while I work. It passes the time. Without turning 3G and data off the battery drains super fast.

  • IPad won't stay off when charging

When I plug my iPad into an AC outlet and start charging it and then try to shut it down it restarts itself. Is this correct behavior? Every night when I charge my iPhone I turn it off once I've connected to the outlet and it stays off while being charged.
If this behavior is normal I'm curious as to why.

Whether the iPad's asleep or completely off, plugging in the charger will either turn it on immediately (if it was asleep) or reboot it to the same initial "Slide to unlock" screen. It is meant to confirm that the charger is actually working and is definitely intended behavior. If it didn't do this then you'd never be certain that the thing is actually charging. It will go back to sleep after the time you set to lock in the Settings under Auto Lock, unless you set that to "Never" in which case it will stay on until you turn it off.

  • IPad won't stay off

My iPad seems to be working correctly, but I cannot get it to stay completely turned off or powered down.  When I hold the top button, the slider appears.  I am able to slide it off, and it does power down but then powers right back up again.  I've tried fully charging and resetting.  It is up to date.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

If you are at just the right percentage on the battery level, you actually can turn the iPad off while it is charging. The iPad will always restart when you plug it in to charge the battery, but if the battery power is high enough, you can turn the iPad off and it will stay turned off.
Exactly what percentage you have to be at to accomplish escapes my memory right now and you do have to have quite a bit of charge left in the battery or it will always turn back on again.

  • Ipod nano randomly turns on, pauses music & won't stay off

I got an iPod Nano 6th(?) Gen in August. It didn't get used for another month - loaded it with tunes in September. After about a month of intermittent use, it started to randomly pause music without touching it in any way. I also noticed that, even though the iPod wasn't being used daily, it rarely had enough charge to play for more than an hour. After paying close attention one day after turning it off, it just jumped back on without my touching it.  Disturbing to say the least - brand new gift, hardly used and not working right after only a couple months.
It was suggested by online and telephone support that the iPod be reset by holding down the keys; then reset, wiped clean and reloaded in iTunes (phone support).  Neither of these fixes worked.  Very upsetting.
In November I filled out a service request and sent my Nano back via UPS.  I am beyond livid at this point as #1 - their tracking page tells you nothing #2 - I almost didn't get my iPod back as they never notified me it was shipped via FedEx requiring someone to be home to sign for it(!) and #3 - my device was denied repair/replacement because they're saying that the LCI (liquid contact indicator) was pink, indicating that my iPod had been submerged in liquid causing the internal damage.  I was told that I had to bring it to an authorized Apple place and they could replace it for me for $65 which is about half of what my husband paid for the thing.
Um, unless this spill or submersion happened right before they sealed it in the box it never got wet.  I think this touch-Nano is defective from the posts seen here and Apple is looking for a way to not replace/repair at their cost.  Maybe their LCI is hypersensitive?? I might have breathed on it or maybe it couldn't take the humidity in August when it was given to me... If a device is to be sold for use by the average, active person (it has a pedometer for Criminy's sake) maybe it shoudn't be so sensitive to "wetness".

  • IPod Nano turns itself on, and won't stay off

    Hi, everybody!
I've had my iPod Nano for about two years now, and have noticed this problem occasionally, but it usually goes away and it has never been this bad.
Here is one scenario: I turn my iPod off by holding the play button. The screen fades to black. I move to set my iPod down, and it immediately lights up again. I press and hold the play button, but instead of turning off, the iPod begins to play music. I pause the song and press and hold again. The iPod fades to black, but again lights up the minute I move my hand.
Here is another scenario: the iPod has been off for several hours. Suddenly, it lights itself up. I pick it up and turn it off, but it again continues to light up as it sits on the desk.
This, of course, runs down the battery--I've had to charge my iPod every day for the past few days because it kills itself, waking up over and over when I'm not around to turn it off again. I'm used to only needing to charge it every few days.
I've tried setting the hold switch once I do get it to sleep, but all that means is that I then have to take it out of hold again a few seconds later to turn it off when it lights itself up. I've restarted over and over, but it keeps happening. I've also recently restored it, with no results. I don't have any alarms set, and there is nothing on my iPod but music and album artwork--no calendar, etc.
It seems to do this most when I am moving around the room. I'm wondering if, somehow, it has become hyper-sensitive and is waking up because it thinks it's being touched? (That sounds so creepy.) It also wakes up instantly if I touch the USB port on the bottom. But of course it also must do this when I'm not around, because often I'll come into the room to find the battery 50% lower than it was when I left. (And I'm the only one who uses my iPod.)
As I said, this has happened before over the two years of its life, but over the past three days or so, it has become nearly constant. I haven't dropped the iPod, it hasn't gotten wet, I haven't done anything unusual with it, so I am at a loss to explain the sudden recurrence of the issue.
I'd appreciate any kind of help!

  • TS4264 Badge app icons won't stay off

I have five different email accounts set up on my iPhone. I have set the notifications so that only one of them (the one I use for personal emails) has badge apps. That way the email account I use for shopping websites and other non-important emails does not have badges. I get dozens of emails per day from the shopping websites but only a few from my personal email. The personal email is the only badge app I want so I can see on my home screen if I have an "important" email. So I have all the notifications for badge apps turned off for my nonessential emails. However I will turn on my phone and suddenly find a badge app on my "mail" icon that says "445" or something that tells me one or more of the badge apps for my nonessential emails have mysteriously turned themselves back on. I know I'm doing it correctly because it works correctly for a couple of days. Then something happens and all of a sudden I have to fix several of them. How could this be happening? Thank you.

    Also try settings> general> restrictions> allow changes> background app refresh> don't allow changes.

  • Music Control Panel won't stay off on ITOUCH

The music control remains on the screen when I switch between programs. It appears when I press the home button to switch between applications and I can't get it to stop coming on.
What does it look like? It's the IPOD music control box that contains an arrow in the middle pointing to the right which pressed becomes a pause button (fast rewind and fast rewind arrows beneath) This is the box that has the large CLOSE and MUSIC buttons at the bottom.
I have tried to double click to get it off and it takes several times.

According to another post, if you press the home button twice, as opposed to a "single" time, the music buton will appear so you can control your music. Try hitting the button only once and see if the controls appear. My dilemma was the exact opposite and I wanted to know how you actually get the controls to appear, so hopefully this works for you.

  • HP dv6-6130us won't stay off

    HP Pavilion dv6-6130us / QE025UA
    Windows 7Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Hello everyone! I'm dealing with a rather strange problem. My friend told me she was having audio issues with Skype on her laptop so she brought it over so I can fix it. Audio chipset driver update and a Skype software update resolved the issue quickly.
However first thing I noticed was the laptop was running with the lid closed and was somewhat hot. Didn't really think much of it so after fixing the audio issue I removed some adware and browser toolbars, removed junk files, installed missing Windows updates, removed expired Norton internet Security and installed Avast Free Antivirus. Left it on to complete disk defrag and went to bed. In the morning the laptop was showing the login screen and everything looked OK. Run an additional antivirus scan and malwarebytes scan but noticed the computer rebooted for no apparent reason half way through the scan. The error logs look OK for some reason. The air vents are not clogged.  Completed built in BIOS diagnostics and no problems were found. Completed chkdsk /f /r also with no problems found.
So I'm thinking no big deal it seems to be working OK and I decide to shut it down which it does but about 5 sec later it turns itself on. It boots up normally with no issues.  It seems to be working OK most of the time as long as there is no heavy load present. When doing something CPU/HDD intensive it randomly reboots with improper shutdown message. Putting it to sleep results in reboot and improper shutdown message. Hibernate works but it wakes up about 5 sec later with no error message (no reboot). Restart works OK.
The only way I can turn it off is to push and hold the power key. I even disabled automatic restart but it made no difference at all. I tried to boot from a USB flashdrive running a Linux image but it prevents the computer from booting up at all (all I get is blank screen, no HP logo, no error messages or sounds). Tried multiple USB ports and got the same result every time. The USB ports work OK in Windows. The flashdrive is bootable on my Hp Envy laptop. I updated BIOS and downloaded the latest drivers from HP and Intel websites but it made no difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @bluecheese81 ,
    Thank you for your inquiry.
You have done a nice job of cleaning up and updating the notebook.
I gather that using the free version of Avast free antivirus no issues have been found.
Although I am not recommending it many people have had success with the Malwarebytes software.  I am unsure if that is what you used to look for malware or not.
Have you tried running MS Fix It ?
You can also try this step to return the power schemes back to defaults.
Go to the command prompt and right click and run as administrator
Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press enter.
    Wait for it to complete.
If the issue should still remain, I would suggest doing a recovery back to factory.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes, won't stay Off, etc

My iPhone started giving me an error message yesterday (happens about every 30 mins or so) that "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone"
The problem is nothing is connected to the iPhone! Additionally, whenever I connect the phone to my comp, iTunes fails to recognize it. So I can't do a Restore. In fact, it appears that the iPhone doesn't realize it is plugged in.
I was able to charge it from the wall charger last night, so I am pretty sure the connector "works."
Is there a way to reset the phone without using iTunes?
(Yes, I am the original owner. No, it is not jailbroken.)
    Thanks!

I am having a similar problem. I am attempting to install the airport extreme card in my ibook g4. The computer is not recognizing the card and now it isn't recognizing the iphone. If I remove the airport card then itunes recognizes the iphone. I have the original phone with the 2.01 update. I'm stumped.

  • 80Gb Classic will not stay off

Any one got a clue on this, spent most of today sorting out my sons new Classic.
    Story so far,
    Connected and registered to apple/itunes.
    Updated firmware.
Spent an age putting 60 Gb of music on.
Now it won't stay off, it comes back on within 2 to 20 seconds, with or without the hold button across.
Restored it twice so the hours of loading music up was wasted.
Anyone got a clue? Or do i need to go back to the shop and exchange it?
Its either that or it gets smashed, and its only been opened for 7 hours, my son hasn't even got his hands on it yet so hes almost as cheesed off as me.

I've had an IPod Classic since October. Mine started doing the same thing after 3 weeks or so. it's been an intermitant problem ever since. I plug it back into the PC and that sometimes sorts it for a while. Someone said it's a caused by being too hot or cold but I've yet to prove that.
If you do find out I'd like to know too. Good luck!
