Won't take password

20+ years of hassle-free Apple, now I buy the Time Capsule. Six hours and counting and I'm still not set up.
Finally have it recognized as my base station, and the internet working, but Time Machine is asking for my "User name and password". Is this the same info needed when I do software updates? Or something else?
I've gone back into AirPort Utility and changed passwords several times and tried everything to get past the password window on Time Machine, to no avail.
Help. Please.

Good God !!
I have just recently bought an iMac
Upgraded to OS X 10.5.2 shortly after startup
came with iWork08.
bought iLife08.
Decided to get Time Capsule to complete the picture.
You chaps, experienced users, have me scared stiff about even trying to install my nice new Time Capsule
My iMac is connected to an Netopia Router with an Ethernet cable, seemed to be the easiest thing to start with, once I got my DNS numbers sorted, and I also got the Wireless connection up and going .
I have left this Ethernet cable in situ in the belief that it provides a faster connection to my router.
My printer is connected to the Mac with an USB cable.
I have 2 Windows machines, one an XP laptop with its own printer, the other, an ancient PC with facilities I still use, both connected to the router wirelessly.
Sharing with them, even though one of them contains a large amount of jpegs is not a priority.
The easy bit seems to update the Airport utility.
I would welcome any suggestions to keep me out of the manure after that.
"One click and thats it, indeed!"

  • Gmail won't go online, won't take password

I recently had a problem with keychain access not accepting my passwords. After a few hours of frustration, I was able to create a new keychain with a new password. Still have some problems with keychain upon start-up, but that is for another day. Right now, I'd like to get my gmail account working again with Maverick's mail app.  While I can successfully sign into gmail in "Accounts," when I attempt to check my mail I get a "Cannot connect to Google account "Gmail"" notification and a password prompt.  However, the prompt will not accept my password.
    From the mac side:
I checked to make sure all mail preferences are correct for the gmail account.  They all appear to be correct, but the Outgoing Mail Service (SMTP) dropdown is stuck at Gmail (offline). I tried to delete the google account and readd it, only to delete my downloaded messages.. I do not recommend trying this.
    From the google side:
I made sure 2-step verification was turned off. I re-enabled the ability to connect my gmail to a new device. I know that my password is correct because from Mac's mail app, Mail > Account > Gmail accepts my password, it is when I try to take accounts online that it does not accept the password.
Not sure if this is a google problem or a mac problem, but I would like to be able to get my mail all in one place without having to download the gmail app. Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Mail/Window/Connection Doctor - is there anything in the Show details button when the SMTP server is selected? You may have done everything in this Apple support article, but it doesn't hurt to check.

  • ITunes ringtones: Bought one, but won't take password for any more??

Using iTunes 7.4.2, last night I bought my first ringtone. It went through without a hitch.
However, I tried again and again to preview another one, but it keeps prompting me for my password to the iTunes store.
All my other iTunes functions that require passwords work normally (buying music, checking my account), and I tried resetting my password using 'forgot password', and it still just keeps prompting me for a password.
If I deliberately enter in the wrong pw, it will tell me in red lettering that the username/pw is wrong. However, when I enter the correct one, I do not get this error message, yet the prompt keeps coming up.
This is using a G4 PB 10.4.10, and having repaired permissions, restarted, etc. Still getting issue.
    Any help appreciated!

If you follow baltwo's method, when finished, you must remember to return the startup disk to the volume you normally boot from. Otherwise, if the external isn't connected and turned on, the Mac won't find a volume to boot from.
Hmmm? IIRC, it the one selected in the Startup Disk prefPane isn't available, the OS will search all mounted volumes for one that will boot the machine. In that instance, that does the job, but doesn't reset the prefPane setting, so if you want to reset it to the internal, that's another step.

Then restart your iPod.  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPod touch. To turn iPod touch back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

"If you've forgotten the Apple ID password how did you log in to make the last post?"
Exactly! The password I used to log on here and write my post I figured was the same Apple ID password I would use to reset my computer login password. But my computer isn't recognizing it as the correct password so it wont let me update my login password. I have 2 user accounts on my computer.
As far as the link you provided, I already looked to that for help earlier. It states:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, click the lock to unlock it, then provide an administrator name and password. Select a user, then click Reset Password.
I did these steps, but I don't remember my admin password. The question is: How do I reset my admin password so I can reset my log in password.
Is my admin password the same password I use to log onto this website to post questions? If so, like I said previously, I already reset that password and my computer isnt recognizing it.

You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh.

  • How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pico won't take my password. :(

How to edit etc/apache2/httpd.conf? Pica won't take my password.
I can navigate to the pico prompt in terminal ... but when it asks for pw, I try to type, the cursor just blinks, doesn't move, nothing.
But if there's another way to edit this file, I'll try.
Just want to uncomment the line about php5 module.
    Thanks!!! xoxo

I like the tutorial, but yeah you are right, it's sudo, not pico that's not taking my pw. I can sudo pico or sudo vi, either way it asks me for my password but then the cursor doesn't respond to my typing.
I'm used to vi. You use control keys to navigate and make changes. It has two modes, command and insert. In command mode, to delete the '#' character, for example, move the cursor to '#' and type 'x' to delete it. Type 'i' to enter insert mode and add new text. Press 'esc' to go back to command mode.
There are numerous ways to save and quit. Usually you type 'ZZ' to save and quit. On some of these system files, their permissions are too restrictive for that. You have to do it the hard way. Type ':w!' to save. The 'w' is for "write" and the '!' is to force a write on a read-only. Then you can quit with "q!'.
I've never edited an administrative file with pico.
I can't even chmod to give myself rights to write to httpd.conf . "Operation not permitted."
Don't try that. Many tools will rightfully refuse to even launch if they detect that their administrative config files have been incorrectly modified.
internet chatter seems to suggest this 10.7.x is, like, super duper secure.  And I'm new to macs.  I'm logged in as admin, I have all the permissions I can find myself via finder ... but maybe there's a double-secret admin ...
There is, it is "sudo". Only an admin user has the ability to use sudo to gain root permissions.

  • Wireless Network Password won't "take"

I can't figure out why the WEP Password that I'm trying to set for our Airport connection won't "take." I enter in the password, Apply .... in Network Preferences, but it doesn't seem to be working, ie. my wireless connection doesn't show a "lock" next to it. I use to have one ... but somewhere along the line of installing 10.6 I lost it.
    I'm using a D-Link DIR-615 router ... firmware is updated.

Log out of your account and back in as another user.
Best not to use the Guest account, so create another account if one does not exist.

  • I changed my Apple ID and password and my ipad won't take the change

I changed my Apple ID and password and my ipad won't take the change

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.
