Won't update in disk mode

Hi there
I've just re-built my iPod with a new hard disk (and a new battery, for good measure).
Everything seems to be fine. I am now trying to load the latest iPod updater software onto my 'pod, but it comes up with the following error when I hit restore:
"Error: A single iPod was detected, but it must be mounted on the desktop for this operation to work."
It isn't showing up on the desktop as a mounted disk in the way that it used to before it broke. Ocassionally it says that the drive contains files that Mac OS X can't read, and prompts me to "Initialize" it, at which point it brings up Disk Utility.
Any idea about what I can do next? Or should I just give up?
3G 15GB (well, 20GB now that I've put a bigger disk in)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

My Ipod is doing the same thing. I took it in to the Apple store and the told me it is Unrepairable. So i have to pay eather $250 to repair or buy a new one. Luckily the Warrenty covered mine. So sorry if urs has expired.

  • My ipod won't go into disk mode

i've tried and tried and it won't go into disk mode. it shows an apple then a folder with the ! and when plugged into the computer sometimes it'll say don't disconnnect for about 10 seconds and then it'll go back to the apple.
also it sounds as though the drive is stuck in a loop; a weird repetitive whirring sound when i hold it up to my ear.

If you can't get it into disk mode and restore the iPod it most likely needs service, especially with that noise it's making.

  • My iPod classic won't go into disk mode

I have an iPod Classic (120GB) here. When I turn it on, it gives me a screen with the Apple logo first and after a few seconds a screen with a red circle, a cross in the circle and the text: www.apple.com/support/ipod . I followed all the steps on that page, however my iPod won't go into disk mode. The iPod is not seen by my iMac and iTunes. What to do?

  • My ipod won't go to disk mode...

my warranty is still good too if I can use that.

  • IPod Nano 5th Gen is stuck on the Apple Logo, won't go into disk mode and won't connect to computer.

My iPod Nano 5th Generation won't turn on; I've held down "Menu" and the center button which makes the Apple logo come up, then it just stays on that. I've followed steps I've seen on here trying to get it into disk mode by holding down the "Play/Pause" button and the center button immediately after the Apple Logo appears but it doesn't respond to that at all. I've charged it and upgraded my iTunes but nothing seems to do anything to it. When I plug it into my computer there is nothing to say it's plugged in on iTunes or My computer or anything. It's driving me crazy and I'm hoping there's a way I can fix it without it having to be sent off.
    Any advice would be cracking!
    Thanks,
    Tilda

Did you ever get this resolved? I'm having the same problem and can't figure it out.

  • Ipod Classic says it needs fixing when connected. Won't connect in disk mode

I've just added all my music to a new memory stick and attempted to sync my ipod classic 160gb for the first time in about 5 years. However my laptop froze not long after it started and I had to restart the laptop.
Today I've tried syncing it again but every time I plug it in it says it needs fixing. I tell it to fix it but either it does nothing, or tells me it can't be fixed as another program is using it (even though all other windows are closed). I've tried restarting it by holding down the select and menu buttons but that didn't help at all. I then put it into disk mode as I read I could then select it in itunes and restart it. It just says 'ok to disconnect' and won't go to 'do not disconnect' or show up in itunes, and sometimes comes up that it needs to be fixed but can't as the disk can't be found.
The iPod itself still seems to be perfectly usable, and has all my old music on it.
I've looked at loads of things on google but none of it helps.

I've just added all my music to a new memory stick...
How is the "new memory stick" related to this problem?  Does it have ALL of your music, including the music that is currently on the iPod?
Do you use a Windows PC or a Mac?
Is the latest version of iTunes installed, or do you use an older version?

  • Won't go into disk mode

My ipod has the sad face on it, but it also indicates low battery. It won't charge, so I can't put it into disk mode to fix it. Do I need a new battery??

  • Ipod won't go into disk mode for recovery

This morning my IPod (80GB Video Ipod) wouldn't play, so I rebooted it, but it would not restart and it gets the red X sign. I followed the directions to get it to go into disk mode, but it still won't. It keeps going to the red X screen! I can't seem to find anymore help on how to fix this!!!
Anybody had this problem? How did you get it fixed, please don't tell me that you can't because I have only had my ipod for a few months!
How do I get my ipod into Disk Mode?!

For anybody experiencing the problem I described above, I have bad news and good news...
Bad news - The hard drive on your 5th gen iPod is shot if you are having the same problem as me with getting the "red x" and not being able to go into disk mode. It is irreparable...sad.
The Good News! - As long as your iPod is under warranty and has not had any water damage and can pass a visual inspection from an apple employee for physical damage they will replace it! Simply set up an appointment at an apple store with a "Genius Bar" employee. It only took about 5 minutes from start to finish for me to explain my problem, have the guy run like three super quick tests and then swap out my broken iPod for a brand new one.
    Good luck all!

  • The terrible "RED X" has shown up, and my iPod 6th gen. won't go into disk mode. Tried slamming it against a table, but that doesn't work. What do I do?

I've had this thing for a long time and it started having the "go to support page on the apple website" red x on the screen. I can't restore it to Disk Mode because it won't let me. I've tried slamming against a table like some people have recommended and I can hear it trying to work on the inside but not totally, and nothing has changed. What do I do?

There isn't much else you can do other than have the iPod's Hard Drive replaced. Apple can exchange your iPod for a refurbished one of the same generation and capacity or you can send it to a third party service center to have them actually put in a new HD for a little less.

  • Ipod won't reset no disk mode

I had the folder icon show up and the unhappy ipod.... This is the second generation 10 gig ipod.. believe it or not it still holds a charge...
I can't reset or get to disk mode....
    any help would be great

Same as all the others. 4th gen 40GB iPod. running latest version of 10.4.2 on a G4 800 MHz 15" TiBook. Everything worked for months. Two Firewire HDs appear, when plugged directly or daisy chained. iPod does not appear when plugged anywhere, even when plugged directly into G4 after full restart. I have also used two different cables and two different docks (3rd gen iPod was lost, so have extras). Can't do a restore if won't appear. I have 36 GB on iPod, and everything works perfectly, including charging through the laptop, external HD, or AC charger. Charging readout is correct, unlike some other posts. Not sure when this happened, but I just recently wanted to delete/add new music.

  • Ipod won't go into disk mode

for the last week and a half my ipod has not been able to start, everytime i turn it on i get the apple logo then the big red x that tells me to contact ipod support. i've restarted it a thousand times, made sure it was charged and when i plug it into the computer it doesn't register that the ipod is plugged in. when i tried to get the ipod into disk mode, it continued to give me the red x. is there a way to fix this? is my ipod killed for good?

  • 4GB nano won't go into disk mode

  • IPod won't stay in disk mode

I have the dreaded sad face icon. I am attempting to restore it. I am able to put the iPod into disk mode. It will stay in disk mode and charge with the A/C charger. When I try to connect it to the pc it will flash "do not disconnect" for a few seconds then reboot and go back to the sad face. It will not stay in disk mode long enough for me to attempt a restore. Anyone had a similar problem?

Well, I got frustrated enough to try the "whack in on the desk" method of iPod restoration I have read about in a few places. Low and behold IT WORKED! Took two tries. I banged it on my desk fairly hard three times and now it has started fine and is charging as I type this. All songs are still there at first glance. It seems like a dumb thing and your mileage may vary, but it worked for me.

  • Windows 8.1 Won't get updates in audit mode.

I just installed Windows 8.1 in a Hyper-V virtual machine. The release version that was distributed through msdn not the preview. I enter audit mode as soon as I can, so there have been no changes or customization applied to the install prior to entering
audit mode. I start up windows update to search for new updates. The status is displayed as "Checking for updates..." "Most recent check for updates: Never." "Updates were installed: Never." The status never changes from "Checking
for updates...". I have even left it running over night and it still says "Checking for updates...". There is never any error message or failure. Network connectivity is functional. I have attempted an install on a physical machine as well with
the same result. If instead of entering audit mode a proceed through setting up windows and a user account, updates will work just fine. There should be an update to defender as well as an update to ie11.
I considered the possibility of a corrupt download so I compared the sha-1 hash to what is listed on the msdn download page and it does match.

Thank You for sharing the logs. I was able to reproduce the issue in my virtual environment. To understand more about this behavior, I engaged the Product Group and I have been informed that
this behavior is By Design. WU uses the OOBEComplete() Windows API call to determine whether OOBE is in progress or not, and if so, it will not perform automatic or UI update searches. HRESULT code 0x8024a008 is the WU error code WU_E_AU_OOBE_IN_PROGRESS.
WU automatic and UI updates won’t run while Setup reports that OOBE is still in progress. This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing. This problem has always existed. Unfortunately,
when the computer is in Sysprep audit mode, Setup will report to WU that OOBE is in progress even though it might not actually be so. This is the reason that updates from WU UIs are blocked in audit mode.
I was having the same exact issue when creating an updated WDS image for deployment to select end-users for testing.  At first, I thought I was doing something wrong.  This process--having a VM boot into audit mode so that it can be fully updated
with Windows Updates along with new and updated third-party applications so to become the baseline/template for deployment--has worked wonderfully since the Vista days.  And it worked perfectly with Windows 8.  Why did Microsoft choose to deprecate
    the functionality is beyond me.
Its bad enough there is so very little traction in the corporate/Gov't world for Windows 8/8.1.  Now it seems that Microsoft, once again, is hades bent on destroying all that was good with Windows.
This is to prevent automatic updates from causing a system reboot during OOBE, which is – needless to say – a Very Bad Thing.
So this was a problem?  Really?  I don't ever recall that happening to me or ever reading about such an issue.  Even if this "issue" was a problem, why not just add another switch to the sysprep command to allow admins to specify
the allowance of updates.  Something like like sysprep /oobe /audit /AllowUpdates?  Is that too hard or too much to ask?
So now with the current Windows-won't-update-in-audit-mode default, if I chose to deploy over 200 Windows 8.1 Enterprise clients, I now have to have ALL 200 machines contact Microsoft Update or my internal WSUS (or push via Shavlik) for updates.  Regardless
of which method is used, the result is that 200 COMPUTERS must consume valuable network bandwidth for updates.  Not to mention there is always several machines that never act right.  Instead of having 200
identically configured machines, I end up with 200 similarly configured machines.
Exactly who is making these decisions?  Has anyone experienced the OOBE update issue that Microsoft claims is such a problem?
    So disappointing.

  • IPod classic won't sync, doesn't go into disk mode what do I do next?

Here we go, another iPod classic problem.  A few days ago I noticed a lag while going through my artists list.  Went home, tried to sync, iTunes said I had a corrupted file please restore.  Not the first time this has happened so I thought it would be an easy fix.  Nope.  Restore didn't happen.  Now my classic doesn't turn on unless plugged in to my PC.   Went through the motions for everything Apple reccomends, nothing.  The screen looks like it's in disk mode, but doesn't say disk mode on it.  It won't go into disk mode, so I can't reformat it on Win 7.  Shows up in windows as removeable drive but does not show up in iTunes so I can't change settings or do another restore.

Main Issue: Short; in disk mode all I get is a screen that says "Okay to disconnect" with a check mark
In Disc mode, yes that is all you see on the Ipod Screen, as the iPod becomes an external hardisk and not a media player with Menu. I's main function is to store files to/from the Mac.
Hard reset (using the menu and middle buttons
Reset the iPod - you ust press the Menu and center button for about 10 secs till the logo comes ON.
I need to be able to put in disc mode to at least run diagnostics on it and can't even do that.
If you want to go into disk Diagnostic, read  this excellent post from tt2.

Today, the ipod is not even being recognized by the computer to say that it's there. There is no "connecting" screen, not even a charging symbol.
*Exception: It will charge when hooked up to a charger in an outlet which leads me to believe it's a software issue in the ipod.
You can try all the above, but you should know that when connecting the iPod to a Mac, do not use the Keyboard USB port, or any USB Hub. if you are using a Macbook Pro, only one USB port can be use for the iPod, the other one is not a high Power USB 2.0 port, which shared the Internal bus with iSight and other IO devices like Mouse, infraRed, Bluetooth etc.
So take a look at your Mac user manual and see which USB port to use.
    Have a nice day!
