Won't wake, tried everything - need someone smarter!

My Intel iMac running 10.5.6 had been working fine since late 2007, but has recently had problems waking up. Holding down the power button does nothing - black screen, no fan or drive noise. The only way I can get it to reboot is to unplug it for a few hours. Things I've already tried to resolve this:
1) Reset SMC several times by unplugging for extended periods - will reboot, but problem comes back (i.e., will go to sleep then may or may not wake)
2) Did a disk check - nothing to repair
3) Rebooted, resetting the NVRAM - no improvement
4) Did a complete erase and reinstall of Leopard, moving only files over from my TM drive (not profile or apps); upon reinstall of the OS, the only app I loaded on was Photoshop CS4
5) Bypassed my power strip, plugged straight into the wall (running short on ideas...)
It has occasionally gotten hung on rebooting (gray screen, black screen - hence the extended unplug period to fix) and once it gave me the file folder and question mark icon on startup, but subsequently completed boot up. The only sure way at this point to get the machine to work, is to unplug it for several hours.
Any guesses? Hardware or software?
Thanks!

Hi Texas Mac Man!
I did not update firmware when I originally looked into upgrading to OS X because there was some incompatibility problem I read about when reading about firmware so I decided against upgrading. My daughter has a newer iMac with OS X so I tried a copy of her disks to see if I could get it to boot up. So I don't believe the OS X is on the iMac but I'm not positive.
Looks like it will take me a little while to read through the tutorial and find which battery and get it but I won't mark this answered just yet.
I am very happy to have heard from a local Mac person!! I didn't know where to go for help. Are you a service person or just a helpful person? If I can't get it working, I will need to go to someone who can fix it.
Thanks!!

Go on to iTunes, and uncheck the albums you want removed.  When the phone re-synces, they will be off.

  • Dvd stuck in Dvd drive, won't eject, tried everything

Hi, I inserted a dvd into the dvd drive and I had headphones on so I couldn't tell but I don't think it made any noise at all when I put it in, meaning it didn't pull it in like it normally does. It just kind of slid in and got too far so that I can't pull it out. I have tried everything. Hitting eject shows the eject symbol on the screen but does nothing. It does not show and dvd on the desktop and it isn't making any noise at all. I have restarted and tried holding the mouse button down on startup which did not work and tried getting it out with a thin card as suggested in other places. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I don't know how helpful this is, but I just luckily got out of a similar situation. I tried all advice on this page, nothing worked. The CD was still stuck in the drive, and despite the fact that I could hear it running during start-up, it did not show up on the desktop and the dvd-drive was no longer recognized by the system.
I've had a disc stuck once before, and then I eventually had to give up and send the macbook to apple.
So, this is what I did. Since after booting the disc stops turning and the unit goes to sleep, or rather coma in this case, I went into system preferences menu and adjusted so that the harddrive never goes to sleep, nor rests. This page (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051207044615606&query=lingon) motivated me to do so, since this will affect all drives, including the optical one, apparently.
Turns out, after restarting the computer the ordinary eject button suddenly did the trick!
Hope your problem can be solved the same way.

  • Render Queue in AME won't start, tried everything and the client needs the footage! Can anyone Help?

    Hi,
I am exporting a quicktime file H.264 at 720p but cant seem to render the video.  I have read through heaps of forums and have tried the following:
-Added black video (from premiere) to the video track 1 for entire length of work bar.
    - ticked use preview files. and rendered all video, audio and effects before exporting.
    - un-ticked include xmp
    - tried exporting without audio.
    - tried only a few seconds of footage
    - tried adding a single opacity keyframe to the first frame of the sequence
    - played around with the quality of the clips.
    - I've even tried making a new project with just a 10 second clip.
Each time After about 10 minutes of waiting I finally get an error msg as below:
    - Source File: /Users/StudioB/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/Untitled.prproj
    - Output File: /Users/StudioB/Desktop/Sequence 03.mov
    - Preset Used: Custom

    Mon Mar 22 18:29:58 2010 : Encoding Failed
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted.
I haven't moved any files and haven't had a problem with rendering the sequence in premiere. but i have had multiple crashes when altering audio
    track properties (adding compressors etc.)
The project file and media was originally copied from CS3 on quad core pc (win xp) and is now running on Mac Pro Dual quad OS X CS4 version 4.0.0
I am really stuck for a solution.  Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Please try to trash your prefs and clear your media cache as well.

  • Won't Boot - Tried Everything I Know

My B & W iMac with CD slot won't boot up. I get chime and then blinking ? alternating with folder icon and spinning sound.
    I've tried:
    holding shift down
booting from 8.6 bootable CD holding C down
zapping PRAM (after this I got the chime back)
unplugging everything including keyboard & mouse
    unplugging rom power
    holding down X
booting from OS X CD holding C down
I gave up for a while so the iMac has not been hooked to power for a couple months (bought laptop PC) but now I need old tax files. I don't have original install CD but I've updated to 9.2.1 I think. But the CDs I have may not be appropriate (copied from friends to try).
I don't think I was doing anything risky when it froze originally. I am not too experienced in solving any problems so please answer with beginner language.
    Please help!!

  • Mac OS X won't boot--tried everything

I did the Quicktime update that came out a few days ago... When I restarted, everything went okay until the "Mac OS X" screen. It went about a half a centimeter on the progress bar in the "Mac OS X" window and then the window disappeared and I was faced by a blue screen. I tried restarting repeatedly. Same thing every time. The "Mac Os X" window disappears. The screen changes to a lighter shade of blue after a few seconds. Every few seconds, a progress wheel like the one under the apple when you first start up the computer appears, makes half a revolution, and vanishes. I have run Techtool Deluxe, Disk Utility off of the install disk (a volume had to be repaired, but as far as I can tell repairing it didn't help at all), Mac OS X Boot Utility, reset the Pram, and booted in Safe Mode as well. Mac OS X Boot Utility said that I had a memory error--the error code was "post/0/2048". Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to have to send my laptop in to Apple.
Someone said something about a "Setup Assistant" in a reply to my earlier post, what is that? Would it help?

    Hello,
this is a known issue for some who installed the QT 7.4.1 update.
    Here are two suggested fixes:
    (1) The first thing to try in this case (if you are in the Setup Assistant loop) is to simply choose "Shutdown" from within Setup Assistant. This may cause the QuickTime installer to resume or re-apply and a normal restart to occur.
(2)The next recommended procedure is to simply boot in Safe Mode -- accomplished by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. After the safe boot, restart normally. A number of maintenance tasks are performed during the safe boot, and you might not need to perform any additional troubleshooting. You might receive a message indicating that the update has finished installing after performing the safe boot.
Sounds like #2 of 2 should be the first thing you try.

  • Finder won't launch - tried everything - HELP!!!

    Okay...
So following all of the sudden, the finder won't launch. Clicking on it on the dock doesn't work, and I can't use force quit to relaunch it (obvious, since it wasn't launched in the first place). Rebooted several times, to no avail. Further noticing, that only a few apps will open (Safari, Mail, TextEdit), but others won't, and even then, you can't interact with anything on the desktop (i.e., opening a text file with Safari). Things like iTunes or AppleWorks won't open at all, both are which essential to me.
I've tried booting up in Safe Mode. Nothing. I tried repairing the permissions. Nothing. I tried running from the Install Disc, and repairing via Disk Utility (several times). Nothing. In fact, it did note several errors, but was unable to repair the drive. Also tried archive and restore off the 10.3 Disc 1, but wouldn't let me, as it said 10.4.9 was newer and couldn't repair through the older disc.
So does anybody have any solutions on this? I upgraded to Tiger via a downloaded update, so I don't have the Tiger disc to repair through. And I certainly don't want to go through the whole debacle with a complete reinstall with a slave drive. Anything would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Well that sounds like it could work...and I really should get a backup...
    BUT!
Saving that as the final straw, would there be any cheap (e.g. free) solutions left? I'd rather wait to buy another external drive, since I'm trying to save money now, so any immediate and cheap solutions would work best.
Hmm... I upgraded to Tiger via download, so I don't have the boot CD for it. But since I already have Tiger, would it be at all possible to get a free 10.4 boot CD to help with this problem? If I explain my plight to Support, do you think they could spare one, since it's very probable 10.4 Disk Utility would work, since the only reason 10.3 couldn't was because it was too low?
If that doesn't work, I suppose the only thing left to do would be to carry through and clone to an external. But first, do you think I could get a 10.4 disc for my problem, or would that be "forbidden" for some reason?

  • Procedure entry point AVCFPlayerAppliesMediaSelectionCritariaAutomaticallyKey could not be located in the dynamic link library. I've tried everything can someone please help!?

I've installed/uninstalled itunes many times I have the apple application support installed after that I got this-->  "The procedure entry point AVCFPlayerAppliesMediaSelectionCritariaAutomaticallyKey could not be located in the dynamic link library AVFoundationCF.dll." What do I need to do to get this fixed? I would be much appreciated if someone could walk me through this. I'm not that very technical and I'm seeking help from anyone. I just want to be able to start listening to my music again.

That one can be produced if you have an older version of Apple Application Support on the PC than is required by iTunes version 11.1.4.62. (The required version of Apple Application Support is included in the standard iTunes installers, but for some reason it hasn't been updating properly for some folks.)
Let's try updating your Apple Application Support to version 3.0 by doing a standalone Apple Application Support install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, can you launch iTunes without the error now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Ipad won't sync, tried everything

After installing IOS 7 AND the latest version of iTunes, my iPad stopped syncing with my computer. I get the "Your iPad did not sync because the sync session failed to start" message. I also get a "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (142404)" message when initially starting iTunes. I have tried:
    - resetting Ipad
    - resetting Ipad to factory settings
    - reinstalling Itunes
    - installing an older version of iTunes
    - Anti-virus/ anti-spyware scans using several programs
    - Pulling out strands of my hair
Two more things of note: 1. I am able to sync my old 2nd generation iPod Nano with no issues. 2. Using a program called SyncIOS also will not sync with the iPad.
I am running Windows 7 Professional on my laptop with all updates installed.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  • NANO WON'T SYNC - TRIED EVERYTHING!

Hi, all. I have a Nano that has many songs on it. My computer crashed, and I had to download the new iTunes, so I lost all my songs on my hard drive and have no backup. I know, I know - it was stupid. So now I have all the songs on the ipod and also have about 20 that I purchased that aren't on my ipod but are on the new itunes hard drive. I tried downloading the newest version of itunes and then performing the sync. I made sure my new version was authorized, which is how the purchased songs ended up on there. I tried going through all the steps on the article for the person that transferred their songs to a new computer. Nothing works. It'll sit for an hour saying it is going to sync but nothing swaps from ipod to itunes or vice versa. Any other suggestions? I've been trying for a week and am quite an experienced computer user and still can't figure it out!

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2).
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
The above methods may depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
If none of these methods work, try CopyPod.

  • New ipad and iPhone 4 calendars won't sync tried everything on here still won't do it, help!

Ipad and iPhone will not sync, I have tried all the suggestions on here but nothing seems to work, any other ideas appreciated!

I have the same issues... iPhone and MBP have all the latest updates, etc. iCal synching used to work, but stopped at some point in January. I have tried all suggestions mentioned in these forums, including merging a new account...
I am stunned that Apple can't get this right.
The closest I've gotten to making this work is a dialog box popping up during synching warning of major changes to iCal; I say ok, but nothing is importing.

  • Help! I need someone smart!

My iPod has been completely cleared of all its music. I plugged it in and all of the songs erased. I will plug it in but a message comes up saying 'iTunes cannot update this iPod because it does not recognize the folder 'COMPAQ_OWNE' . How do I fix this!??!?!?!

I have already tried restoring, and when I connect my iPod, the page with the iPod doesn't show up in iTunes (the page with the picture of iPod and a few tabes saying iPod, Summary, etc.). I don't think iTunes recognizes my iPod? It took me about five minutes to pull up that tab in my Library and I don't remember how to do it. Help! Again!
