Wonder if the external USB Superdrive works on AppleTV?

Was just wondering if the external Superdrive option for the Macbook Air works with the USB on the AppleTV. So that you could watch dvd's.
Anyone that knows this?

The only sure thing is that AppleTV port is currently useless to the user unless they're a fairly advanced or brave hacker.
There are things posted daily here that seem entirely feasible and useful such as connecting a keyboard to AppleTV USB to enter text into YouTube search - there seems to be no reason why this couldn't be done, but AppleTV doesn't allow it now and might never do.
Buy an AppleTV (or not) based on what it is known to do now rather than on speculation of what it could be able to do if only Apple did this/that, added a function/feature etc etc....

  • Does the apple usb superdrive work with an imac?

I have a new iMac and was surprised I couldn't burn a cd because there is no disc drive! Can the Apple USB Superdrive be used with the iMac? The product details do not mention compatability with an iMac, only MacBook Pro & Mac Mini.

According to http://www.apple.com/mac/compare/ it's compatible wtih the new iMacs.

  • External USB SuperDrive-cannot get it to work-need driver for it?

CD driver in my IMAC gave up . I tried several externals, that didn't work
Broke down and bought Apple External USB SuperDrive.
The store said just plug it in, and it will work.
Nothing! Is there a driver needed for it for 24" Intel IMAC, with Snow Leopard.
Supid to buy it from Best Buy, instead of the Apple Certified repair store, I guess.

Ah. You're looking to *play* discs, not just burn them! No, burning is not necessary - you mentioned a Super-Drive, which has the burn capacity and I though that was your main agenda. It's more basic than that. Okay, I got it.
Does the DVD player come up when you insert a DVD?
If not, there is a control panel in the System Preferences - in the Hardware settings.
The CD's & DVD's control panel. (It's furthest on the left, second row down)
Open that and there are the 'what to do's' for blank and burned/premade discs..
Make sure that the setting for 'When you insert a video DVD' is set to open the DVD player.
The 'radio bar' button to the right will open a drop-down menu and it should be set to play the disc, but if someone got in and fiddled with it, God knows what the settings can end up..
(The DVD app is not loaded in the Dock, by default and it should be! If you use the DVD player alot, go and drag the program straight out of the Applications folder and drop it wherever you like down inside the Dock!)
If the DVD player is not working for whatever mysterious reason, the second option is to try VLC (http://videolan.org) it is free, and is THE most robust media player for almost every type of video there is.
Install that and go into the System Preferences and back to the CD/DVD panel and set the machine to use VLC when you put in a DVD. See what that gets.
Good luck! I'll leave you tonight and will check in tomorrow... Goodness, it's after 2 a.m.. I'm off to sleep.

  • USB Recording - requirements for the external USB drive

What are the requirements for the external USB drive to be recognised by the TV?
I've tried two now, which can both be seen by the TV to show media, but neither are recognised by the TV to be used as USB Recording space.

    Hi,
    I have a similar question.
I have a 40L6353 and I cannot seem to playback anything recorded onto USB.
I have tried a large 500 Gb Toshiba (USB powered) drive and 2 or 3 others such as an 8 Gb SanDisk and a smaller capacity non branded 500 Mb stick.
All of the above I have formatted in the TV. When I press record the pop-up staes that recording has started and when I press stop it asks me to confirm. When I go to the recorded list it shows the files but says that they are an unsupported file format!!
I can play videos and music transferred to another Toshiba 500 Gb drive by PC.
I have also tested the sticks and they pass the 2 on-screen tests and I believe when a stick is inserted I can pause live TV.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
I have been trying to get this to work for over a week - if there is a fault I will need to go back to the vendor but I want to be sure it isn't operator error.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Will a USB SuperDrive work with my Mac Book Pro?

Will a USB Superdrive work with my mac booc pro?

    lorifromgermany,
if you have a non-Retina MacBook Pro, the following command could allow a USB SuperDrive to work with it.
Log in as an administrative user, open Terminal, run the following command within Terminal, close Terminal, and then restart your MacBook Pro:
    sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1"
(When it asks you for a password, enter the administrative user’s password.)

  • Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

The soon to be released new iMacs don't have a DVD drive. I don't believe that Apple have updated their site to say their USB drive will work, but the expectation is that it will.
I watched the keynote and when Phil Schiller was presenting the new models I think he mentioned something about it working and he had one on the desk next to the iMac.
I'm going to check the keynote if it's still up and I'll update my post if I'm wrong.

  • Will the lightning USB adapter work with regular USB jump drives?

Will the lightning USB adapter work with regular USB jump drives?

    Not really.
Technically, with some USB drives (I've had a 50% success rate) you can import photos or videos off the drive - thi those photos or video follow a very strict naming convention.
But you cannot import anything but photos or video and there is zero support to write off the iPad to the flash drive....so while it technically may work, it's so limited to effectively not work.

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

  • HT2801 can i use the Apple USB SuperDrive to upgrade my OS from 10.5 t0 10.6?

The optical drive on my Macbook Pro (Build 9L31a) broke a couple of years ago and I have thus far managed to get around it. Now that iCloud is about to reign down on my OS 10.5, I need to upgrade via disk. Will the new Apple USB SuperDrive do the trick or do I have to have the internal drive replaced. Is there another drive out there that would be better than the SuperDrive?
    Thanks!

Apple's USB drive won't work with your computer at all.

  • Does USB Superdrive work now?

Recently picked up a MackBook Pro, and too my dismay... No disc drive. The USB superdrive has a ton of very bad reviews on the Apple website so I'm extremely skeptical to try it for the rather steep price of $90.00. I did notice though that a lot of the reviews were from around 2012 or so. Just wondering if anyone knows whether or not Apple has made any modifications to the product since then to make it more compatible?
    Thanks.

Mine only lasted for 2 weeks. And I had to bring it to a Genius Bar to get someone to eject the DVD that was stuck inside it.  Also keep in mind, that the SuperDrive worked well in conjunction with iDVD.  Unfortunately, Apple discontinued that software and if you attempt to get an old copy via eBay or Amazon, you may have installation errors.  Apple has made it clear that they want their customers to stay away from optical drives (and from customizing their laptops by soldering the RAM onto their motherboards, but that's another discussion).  The Apple Store in San Francisco doesn't even have the SuperDrive on their floor as a featured item.  Despite it showing online as available for pickup, I had to ask one of the representatives to "get one from the back storage room". The fact that it's not even shown off as a display item on the floor (in the San Francisco store of all places), is a telling sign.

  • Does The Apple USB Modem Work With The Mac mini ??????

Just wanted to know if anyone has successfully used the new Apple USB Modem with the Mac mini, is it compatable ????
Thank you for your input on this.
    Mike D.

It says it works with the Mac mini, but does it really? I just received my modem yesterday and could not get it to work with my 1.42 mini - the more expensive one that comes without a dialup modem! I looked carefully at the specs and it appears the Apple USB modem requires Mac OS 10.4.3, not the 10.4.2 that comes with the Mac mini.
Talk about stupid! And the mini docs say it comes with the "latest" version of Tiger. Not! So I can download the upgrade, I guess. IF I could get on the internet! This is extremely annoying. I guess I'll have to download the upgrade on another computer and transfer it somehow. Boy, those Apple guys sure are tech geniuses, aren't they???

  • Is there a possibility to download files directly to the external usb drive in Firefox for Android?

I have the Android device that support external usb hard drive, when I want to download some files via Firefox there are only two possible "places" where I can put the files - external memory or SD card. It will be nice if there would be an option to save file on ext. usb drive.

    Hi Nix_N1:
Yeah I don't know about this and I don't have an Android device that supports USB storage.
What Android device are you using and what operating system (Jellybean? Ice Cream sandwich ?)
I asked the Mozilla QA folks and they said Firefox for Android uses the Android platform download directory so the USB drive *should* show up if it registers properly with Android.
    They suggested the following:
    # removing the SD card and seeing if it shows up in place of the SD card.
    # perhaps changing the following preference (type "about:config" in the url bar without the quotation marks)
    ''' browser.download.dir'''
will fix it ('''WARNING:untested and unsupported but hopefully this might help''')
Regardless I suggest filing a bug at (I looked but couldn't find a bug that corresponds to this):

  • How do I change the EXTERNAL ID on Work Repository?

    Hi All,
Just wondering if there is a way to change the EXTERNAL ID that is seen when you right click on the work repository and choose edit in new window? We have a duplicate issue that occurred and we changed the ID, but also want to make sure the EXTERNAL ID is changed and not the same as another repository.
What is this ID used for?
    Can we change it?
Is it stored in a table somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Erik

    Settings > Store
Click "Sign Out" of the Apple ID currently selected, enter your new one with password and you should be good to go.

  • Can't get the external speakers to work!!! PLEASE HELP!

The external speakers attached to my Macbook Pro (plugged into the headphone jack) aren't working...the output is set properly and the mute is not checked off - it worked last night and then this morning suddenly it didn't - what do I do?? I can still hear the sound faintly from the speakers but I cannot control the volume from the speakers and it is very quiet. Sooo frustrated!!!

Because your speakers need a 5.1-channel surround-sound signal input, they can't use a standard 2-channel analog stereo headphone plug to connect to the signal's source. I assume therefore that they must have a mini-TOSLink plug, which carries a 5.1-channel optical digital signal. When such a plug is connected to the MacBook Pro's headphone port, the volume coming from the speakers is not controlled by the computer — it's controlled by the amplifier that powers the speakers (and that amplifier is usually built into the subwoofer of the speaker system). So find the volume control knob or buttons for the speakers and you should be able to get a louder output from them — and presumably from all of them.
If in doubt, consult the instructions for the speaker system.
