Wondering about screen - Purchase iMac or wait?

I was going to buy a new 24" iMac but have become concerned about the screen issues that have appeared in various forums. It seems you only hear from those who have had problems and not from those who haven't. I'm wondering how widespread the problem is and if I should wait to purchase.
Advice and thoughts are welcome.
Mike

Shortly after the warranty ran out on my 24", I started getting very serious display issues. I've never seen anything like it. It's difficult to explain here, but the problem is driving me to distraction. For example, If I leave a window open for any length of time at all and then close it - I can see a ghost image of its contents on the desktop. That takes hours - sometimes days - to go away. If I move a dialog box - or anything for that matter - I see other parts of the screen showing up far from their origin. I can slide window around to clear it up - much like working in Photoshop - and 'paint' the screen back to normal. What a ridiculous situation, when you consider what one of these things cost. There's a 'smudge' of dark colour in the bottom left corner of the screen which slowly varies in size...and the list goes on and on and on. I've owned just about every kind of Mac since 1989, and I have never had as many freezes, hangs and crashes as I have with this box. Probably one kernel panic (at a minimum) per day. Right now, I sit with a fan directed at the computer to try and prevent it from crashing more often - it helps, believe it or not, but it's damned uncomfortable. Would I recommend an iMac? I've defended Apple through thick and thin for decades, spend tens of thousands of dollars on their equipment, and as much as I hate to say it - don't buy it until someone at Apple admits they created a lemon and 'fesses up. My Intel iMac is a beautiful thing - but functional, it isn't. Good luck with this one. It's an expensive gamble.

  • What about screens of imac ?

    hi everyone !
i'd like to know if it is possible to connect the screen of the imac with another process?
for example, could i play with my playstation in the 24' sceen of my imac ?
thx for answering ! i hope i've been understood cuz i'm not as good in english as i'd wish

    aenorion,
You'll need a 3rd Party device like the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid for this. It costs $150 and also turns your iMac in to a HDTV.

Ahhh, well  you never mentioned that before. You need to contact your friend from whom you purchased the computer. He/She should have any and all install discs for any third-party software included as well as for OS X and the original pre-installed software.
Apple will gladly sell you replacements for any discs that did come with the computer originally, but they will not do anything for you because you purchased the computer used. If it's in warranty still, then you can get any warranty covered things taken care of through AppleCare:

  • What is better Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Exel

I am working on Macbook pro retina for around 16 hours a day,  it is ok but the screen is to small. I am opening about 25 - 30 EXCEL windows, 20 - 25 safari windows at the same time. Excel windows are small, they only show 40 rows and S column   Now I am considering buying  iMac 5k ( but the screen is only 27", however a very high resolution but I think that fonts and digits displayed may be too small ). I am also considering Mac Mini or Pro with 40" 4K TV ( 4k computer monitors are 27 - 31" , so better idea would be purchasing iMac 5k ) . The problem is that 40 - 42" TV don't have Display Port ( I can't find  it anywhere )
Please help me to choose what would suit my needs better. I need large screen to work comfortably with an Excel sheets.  What is better? Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Excel ?. The other problem I have is that when I spend  16 hours at work with retina macbook , my eyes are ok. Using the  30'' Dell screen 2560/1440 my eyes are tired after 2 hours.
Thanks for your help on advance
    Best regards
    David

Currently you can only get 4 K at 30 Hz via HDMI. Some users have reported jerky curser movement because of the 30 Hz.
I would go for the 5K iMac. You can add a second screen at 4K.
    FaceTime HD camera
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display

    Thunderbolt digital video output
    Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    HDMI video output
Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz

  • When to Purchase iMac 27" i7

Sadly, my Dual PPC 2.7 has died on me. Having planned on upgrading when a quad-core iMac was released, I have pretty much saved up the funds to purchase a iMac 27" i7 to replace my Dual PPC 2.7.
When do I know it is "safe" to purchase a new iMac (specifically the 27" i7? I.e. - when can I be confident that I won't have to deal with the headaches of being an "early adopter" (yellow, blinking screen, cracked screen, etc.)?
Wait for the shipping time switches from 2 weeks...? Wait for a statement from Apple...? Wait for a rev. model...? Wait a couple months...?
Any input on previous experiences or knowledge much appreciated.
    Thanks.

One of the most 'active' times for Apple was traditionally at the early January "MacWorld' gathering. This used to be the place where Steve J would do his famous "One More Thing" presentation of a new product. Sadly, Apple doesn't do the official presentations at MW anymoe.
But MW still creates a buzz for supplier and vendors alike. This often has all the refreshed products and updates, and vendors plan some of there biggest promotions at this time anyways, so as to not interfere with XMas sales and to take some of the focus off of the CES show that happens same time of year.
Sadly, most new Apple products are not deeply discounted (except newly discontinued product at the time new revisions are released), and I am not a fan of rebates (free printer after rebate, etc.). Best I could do was $100 off, 0% financing/24 months, free ship, and No Tax; I was at the right place/right time !
As an owner of a flawless 27" iMac i5, from the notorious(?) 945 batch, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a quad iMac when they finally shipped, and I made the immediate jump, and this new iMac is pretty much the best package I have ever owned; it's fricken righteously perfect…
Go for it asap, there are probably many 'silent' people who thrilled with the performance of their 27's, but the people who had bad luck are fully within their rights and responsibility to holler if there's are not perfect…. I think you are going to be lucky.

We would like to have all our music, photos, etc. on the iPad - is it best to create a new combined Apple ID for the iPad and simply upload our music, photos, etc. via our laptop instead? Does this not then render the iCloud useless to us?

And just in case you were wondering, installing one purchased copy on all the Macs you own is specifically called out as allowed in the Mac OS X Lion license.
If you do not want to download multiple times, just copy the Applications -> Install Lion app to a safe place BEFORE you do the first install.  Then copy that copy to any Mac you own where you want to install Lion.

I'm going to Spain and Italy in a week or so and wondered about taking my iPad 3. What do I need to do to be able to use it in those countries?

I took my iPad 2 to Italy a few years ago.  There was an abundance of free wifi everywhere so I didn't even need to buy a local sim.  If you want cellular data, there are many shops where you can purchase local sims (they usually need to see your gov't ID such as a passport ).
Using wifi I was able to FaceTime back to Canada from my hotel everyday with no issues.
    Enjoy your trip!

  • Is it Ok that newly purchased iMac gets Hot not just Warm, and smells sometimes like burnt plastic?? Just by using safari for mails And playing Radio??? Or i must throw it!! since Can't get any Direct contact to Apple!!!

IS IT OK that a newly purchased  iMac -intel Lion- gets So HOT That it smells like Burnt Plastic,Not Warm but  Hot!!??.. Just only by using safari-reading mails or newspapers- And playing Radio with VLC??!!!!...Or i must throw it away before it explodes??!!...Since Not possible to contact direct Apple to replace it !!!!..-they send me automatically from one adress to the other And No reply!!.THANKS!!

I don't know where you live or what you're talking about being sent from one address to another.  Your iMac has a 90 day warranty with tech support and service, if needed.  Apple has toll-free phone numbers in the US.  You call that number, get to speak to a tech, give that person your computer's serial number and describe the problem.  I suspect that there are similar arrangements in other parts of the world.  That is "direct contact" with Apple.  Have you tried to do that where you live?  Wny are you trying to communicate in writing (by e-mail?)?  In addition, if you don't have Apple Care you should immediately purchase it if you're still eligible.  It'll extend your warranty to 3 full years.

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VR4F2Q/arizomacinusergr
That is a $200 savings off the retail price.
    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6. 3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.
    Have fun!

  • About to purchase a Macbook Pro for gaming!

I'm about to purchase a MBP and wanted to know which version do you recommend?  And also, how much memory and flash storage will I need?
I will be using Bootcamp to run windows and I will be using the laptop for gaming - downloading games off disc and/or digitial.  In doing research, seems as if the MBP w/Retina (which has the Intel Iris Graphics) would provide better game play?  Is this the case or will the MBP work just as well (with the Intel HD 4000 graphics)?  And how much memory and flash storage would you recommend? (I will be playing/downloading games off steam, on cd, etc...)
Thanks...and obviously I'm an amateure techy!

In general, laptops are not gaming machines, but it's possible to do some gaming on them. Also, usually for good gaming experience you need a separate video card, integrated graphics are not so great for gaming. So, if you had to choose a mac for gaming, imo, you should go for an iMac or MBP which has discrete graphics card.
Why is that? Because the workload of rendering 3D graphics is taken by the GPU and the CPU (sometimes distributed between them, depending on how the game was developed). The GPU specs also determine which graphics settings will be supported in games. For example, if you want this mac to be able to play a game which will be released next year, you might want to check which version of DirectX the GPU supports so that it doesn't become obsolete fast. Most game development is done for Windows, so they optimise game graphics mostly for DirectX.
RAM doesn't help much. I have 16GB of RAM (with integrated Intel graphics), but that doesn't make my macmini run games >50FPS at the highest graphic settings. The graphics card is the most important here.

  • About to Purchase Macbook Pro, with reservations

I am about to purchase a Macbook Pro, but I have some reservations I wanted to level about, and get the communities opinion. I really want leopard when it is released in October, but I'm going to school, so I cant wait till then to purchase it. I've heard there is some sort of obscure Apple policy that will allow me to upgrade to the new OS for free if I purchases the hardware within a given amount of time before the upgrade to Leopard. If true, this will cement my decision to get a Macbook. If not..... I may have to pursue a PC, unfortunately.

    hirschab,
If I am not mistaken, Apple has offered free "upgrade" versions of new OSs to those who purchased hardware within 30 days of any new release (I know for a fact that the plan is offered, I'm just not sure of the time period).
In other words, it is unlikely that anything you purchase now would be eligible when Leopard is released.
However, the full "retail" version of OS X is only $129; that's all it would cost to upgrade when the time comes (of course, pricing for Leopard could be different, but probably not by much).
Regardless of all this, it doesn't make sense that you would base your buying decision on whether or not you would get a free copy of Leopard. Either OS X is what you want, or it's not. While Leopard will have some new features, it is still OS X, and Tiger is already way better than anything else.
Do you have some specific reservations concerning Tiger that you think would be addressed in Leopard?
    Scott
