Wondering if my external drive has been backed up on Drobo or not

I apologize in advance for my long question that may sound confusing and/or repetitive.
I have been backing up my Mac and external firewire 800 drive to my Drobo using Time Machine for a year now. Recently my Drobo started having problems, cannot mount on the desktop. I have been dealing for over a month now with Drobo tech. support trying to fix the issue, had 2 failed attemps of repair via Disc utility and for all this time I haven't been backing up. (for 1.5 months).
Finally today I tried Diskwarrior on Drobo to save the data on it. I could only see the previews of my backups though the external hard drive seems to have been backed up only 3 times (at the beginning) and never since (for 10 months). I haven't changed anything in my set up since I started Time Machine. So I am wondering why I cannot see the external hard drive's backups? Could it be because the data is corrupted or because Time Machine never backed it up after the first 3 days?
I also tried Data Rescue Beta today to run a quick scan on the Drobo and had the same result. I asked their support service the same question and waiting for their answer now.
I am asking this because since yesterday my external drive that contains really important data cannot mount on the desktop. So I may loose very important data I haven't backed up neither archived.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. I hope to hear some suggestions.

Probably. Time Machine backups have a very complex structure, and are all interlinked. So when something gets corrupted, there's no telling what was there before things went awry.
or because Time Machine never backed it up after the first 3 days?
Anything's possible, but that's doubtful. If the drive was connected, and not specifically excluded, it would have been backed-up. If there was a problem backing-it up, the backup would have failed with a (more or less) descriptive message.
If Time Machine was still able to do backups in the last week or so, you might be able to find the messages it sent to your logs, including how much was backed-up from each volume. See #A1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Most likely, you'll need the instructions in the pink box to use Console to see the previous logs.

If Disk Utility can see it, try a +*repair disk+* (not permissions). See #A5 in Troubleshooting if you need instructions. If that (or Disk Warrior) can fix it, obviously, back it up immediately, via the Restore tab of Disk Utility, or a 3rd-party app such as CarbonCopyCloner or the similar SuperDuper (either easily found via Google).
If not, you'll need specialized +Data Recovery+ software, or a service that performs the function. It's not cheap, and there are no guarantees.
The app mentioned here most often is Data Rescue 3, and it seems to get good reviews, but I haven't used it myself, so can't recommend it over any of the others.
Another is File Salvage.
Some of these have a free "trial mode," that will tell you if there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file. For more, you have to pay the $$.
You'll also need another drive to receive anything it can recover.
Look for apps or services under +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
But don't expect to get a nice list of folders and files, organized in any recognizable way. It will be a random list of files. You may get the original file names, in some cases, or there may be some assigned names (if the actual name couldn't be determined).
Because of that, if you need to do recovery, do it from the external, not the Time Machine backups; sorting out what was found won't be easy either way, but practically impossible on the backups, since there are probably several hundred thousand, or more, files on it.

  • Exclamation mark! Not recognising external drive has been reconnected.

All my Itunes music is stored on an external hard drive. Foolishly I must have pressed play whilst the drive was disconnected and I now have an exclamation mark next to every track. This will mean that the next time I connect my Ipod there will be a problem.
How do I get Itunes to recognise that the songs are there when the external drive is reconnected?
Is there a simple way to remove the exclamation mark without playing every song individually?

Just exit iTunes and open it again. All you have to do is make sure the drive is connected before you open iTunes.

Sorry we are unclear as to the external hard drive and its connection to the TC..
For instance the light that blinks.. is that the TC or external hard disk or what.
Did you try just rebooting / restart the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router / TC.. external drive.. clients with 2min gap between each.
Are you actually running Snow Leopard as the profile states?
    How old is the TC?

  • External Hard Drive for Time Machine - 2 TB. Can I remove other external drives it was backing up?

I have an external drive dedicated for Time Machine, it's 2 TB. Last year I started backing up computer (500 GB) and one external hard drive that has 500 GB. IAlso, I have another external drive that is 1 TB connected to my computer. I noticed last week that I was hearing that other external drive sounding funny, so I thought I would add it to Time Machine to back up. Now today my Time Machine failed. I tested the drive or verified the drive and all was well. My thought is because I added this drive to Time Machine it failed because of not enough room? Is there a way to remove that other external hard drive and go back to just the computer and the 500 GB?
I did btw out of a panic mode buy the GDrive that has Thunderbolt with 3 TB, yet I can't use Thunderbolt because that plug is used for my monitor, bummer. But, maybe using this new external drive I can back up the 500, the computer and the 1TB. Any thoughts?

When you say the Time Machine failed, do you mean the drive containing the Time Machine backups failed, or what failed was trying to back up the new drive you added? If Time Machine was able to complete the first full backup of the new drive, then adding Time Machine didn't cause the problem, it was a coincidence. If Time Machine runs out of space it just starts deleting the oldest backup. I suppose it might fail on the first Time Machine run after the initial backup if it didn't have space to delete stuff. When you look at the Time Machine drive in the Finder, is it in fact full? If there's plenty of space left on it, it's not clear what the failure was about.
Also, testing and verifying with Disk Utility will spot some problems but not all.

Thunderbolt can be daisy-chained, so if it or other Thunderbolt devices have a pass-through port it might be possible to do all that. But it might be better to return the drive and get a USB 3 drive instead. It would be fast enough, cheaper, and more versatile. For a single hard drive (not a RAID or SSD), Thunderbolt is not really much faster than USB 3.

My dad has dementia - does not remember his password. His hard drive has been erased. We need to reload Mountain Lion and can't figure out how to do it. Internet recovery asks for his Apple ID and password. He has no idea. I have an Apple ID but have never bought anything through the iTunes store so it won't accept my Apple ID. I don't know if his computer is under warranty. He does not remember if he has Applecare. I tried reinstalling Leopard -- the computer originally came with Leopard -- but the computer screen goes grey and a message comes up saying I need to restart. He wants to give this computer to me since it's useless to him. What do I do to get a system on it again?

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

If my iphone says my camera roll is has been backed up on icloud, can I erase my photos off my phone without losing them?

I definitely wouldn't. All you can do with the backup is a full restore and that would overwrite anything you later had added to the phone (including any additional photos). If you have a computer, doing an import is a good idea: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
If no computer, you could send the photos to someplace such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or other online photo storage.

  • How do I reinstall Indesign after my hard drive has been deleted?

How do I reinstall Indesign after my hard drive has been deleted?

After getting a hard drive back in working order you can either reinstall the software using the disks if you purchased disks, or you can download your software as a trial version and use your original serial number to activate it.
If the software is the latest version you can download it from Adobe's product pages.
If the software is an older version you can download the trial version of the software using the link below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site.

  • Drive has been Weird

Ok my disk drive has been acting weird with all types of didsks, DVDs, CDRs, Cds etc. Either the drive continues to eject them after I insert them or they refuse to eject liek there getting stuck on something on the way out and they go back in; in that case it takes pressing the button a dozen or so time and the PB to be vertical and the disk to be getting help from gravity to come out . I was going to call Apple Care but this situation is hard to explain and I have a feeling unless its one problem or the other theyll say its my disk. I think the drive may have been bent from resting my hands on it or something. I keep good care of the computer and its mainly on a desk and rairly moved Anyway any one have one or both of these problems? Also it seems disk get stuck after the drive has been in operation for an extended time, loading, watching movies etc.

Hi, Richard. I think your hypothesis is correct--the mechanics of the drive have gone wonky. This is not something you will be able to fix yourself, I don't think, so give Apple Care a call. When you let them know that the PB has to be vertical to eject the disk, they will know that it's a drive problem not a disk problem.

How do I tell Time Machine to add a new external drive to be backed up?  I have an external drive with data I need to add to my overall back up with what's on my mac.  I have a separate drive already active as the Time Machine backup disk.  I can see how to EXCLUDE disks, but how do I ADD that new external drive to regular backups?
I have 10.8.5 system on my Mac laptop.

Remove the drive from the list of items set to be excluded. It needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for this to be possible.

  • HT1353 im trying to download games on to the ipod touch 2nd gen and looks like the software driver has been removed, what does that mean and how do i sort it?

i have an iod touch and aparently the software driver has been removed and i had it restored to factory settings as i bought it from someone, what does this mean and how do i solve the problem

Just what error message are you getting?
Are you trying to redownload them directly to the iPod?
If you are getting an error message that included Open GL 2 or similar that means that the app requires that but only the 3G and later iPods support that.

  • More than one database driver has been used

Hi everyone, I just want to link 2 tables, one in Oracle and the second is in Access, is this possible? Please help, tahnks a lot.
    I got this message:
"More than one database driver has been used in this report. If you want to change the database drivers use Database/Set Location.
Please make sure that no SQL Expression is added and no server-side group-by is performed"
    This is the query generated:
    SELECT "A"."Field_in_A"
    FROM   "OracleDB"."A" "A"
    SELECT `B`.`Field_in_B`
    FROM   `AccessDB` `B`

The above suggestions are good. You might also consider using a link table from MS Access to have the linking done right inside MS Access.
If you can store your access mdb file on the server where your Oracle database resides this will greatly reduce your network traffic.  If the MS Access database must reside on a different machine it can still work but the gains won't be as great.  Still, this is an efficient way to do this if you can.
To create a link table in MS Access choose, New, then 'Link Table'. In the Link dialog that appears you can choose ODBC.  I recommend using the SQORA driver from Oracle that is installed with SQL Plus.
If you have to link in Crystal Reports instead you still can. However, all data from the Oracle table and Access table will be pulled to the client that hosts Crystal Reports and sorting will be done on the Crystal client.
You definitely have some good options though.

  • I downloaded ICloud yesterday and it has been backing up/syncing for the past 18 hours.  Is this normal? Should I stop the back up and try to re-sync or just let it keep going.   I use the 3G network (WiFi) with Verizon

I downloaded ICloud and IOS5 yesterday afternoon and it has been backing up/syncing to IPAD since 7:30 PM (over 18 hours).  Is this usual or is there a problem with what it is doing.  Should I stop the backup and start over or just let it keep going?  I have WiFi, 3G through Verizon and it is rather slow.  I am afraid that it might be using up all my available data allowance and is going to create a huge phone bill.  Can anyone advise me as to what I should do?  Has anyone had this problem before?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Lucy

You are downloading the update to iOS 5 and that would have to be done within iTunes on your computer using a WiFi network. The 3G service on the iPad is not being used for this or are you downloading some way that I've never heard of?
There is no way that it should take 18 hours so something has gone wrong. What stage are you stuck at? What does the iTunes progress bar indicate?
