Wondering outloud - 2013 13' Air or 13' Pro

Hello,
I am looking at buying a Mac laptop to keep current on emerging coding tools, standards, etc..
XCode
HTML 5
Java Development
etc..
This machine wouldn't be a full fledged desktop replacement, just something to work on when away from the office, but still something I would like fast and powerful enough to code on.
i.e.  Would need to run JBOSS on it, etc.
Would the 2013 AIR be up to the task (would love to hear hands on experience) - or should I look at the PRO (non Retina).
Thanks.

The MBA might be small and light but there's nothing lightweight about its performance. In the past 5 years I've moved from a 15" MBP to a 13" MBP to a 2011 13" MBA and I'll probably trade this one in on the new model to get its improved battery life.
There's nothing I can do on my iMac that I can't do on my MBA. Two caveats: 1) I'd really rather use Photoshop and InDesign on a large display than the 13" display and 2) the discrete graphics card of the 15" MBP does make a difference with some tasks. But for coding, unless you are doing 3D graphics related coding, that isn't going to be an issue.

  • Should I get a 2013 macbook air, a macbook pro 13 inch, a regular macbook pro or wait for the next generation of haswell macbook pros?

So im a little confused, i dont know what macbook should i get.
    I want a macbook for:
    surf the web
Do some school work like powerpoint, excel, word etc.
    store music and pictures
This macbook i will probably have it for like 3 years so i wanna make sure the macbook i choose will last.
I really would like a macbook pro but the thing is that i`ve have been hearing that a new generation of retina macbook pros will be coming this fall so i wanna know your opinion if it is worth waiting for the next gen of macbooks.
    thanks

For what your doing, a $400 PC laptop will do and if it gets lost or stolen (as long as you make backups) it's really no big deal. Buy another.
A Mac will set you back almost $2000 for the same performance by the time you thrown in the 3 year warranty, tax and backup drives etc.
The higher end Mac's closer to $3000.
Also after 3 years after spending so much money you want to fix it to keep it going, a cheap PC you just get a new one.
In some instances it's not smart to get a Mac, they are often a target for theft and if your young, your prey.

  • I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit ? And office pro 2013 64 bit too?

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • Boot Camp Question .... I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp. If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"

I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp.
If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"... will it make my mac suseptible to viruses overall due to having a windows component? also will it make my mac slower as well

If you are only going to use one or two window only programs then I wouldn't waste the space.  Try WinonX it allows you to install exe. Files on Mac without installing windows.

  • HT3696 just wondering whether i can install final cut pro in my macbook air intel corei5

just wondering whether can i install final cut pro in my macbook air wth intel corei5 64bit

yes, you can. Its on mine.
If however you plan on anything other THAN simple cuts and simple edits, youre barking up the wrong tree.
Heavy layer and graphics additions or any serious vid. edits is not the forte' or platform for the macbook Air.

  • 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM v/s 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade?

    HI All
This is my first post here. As mentioned I have a fall 2011 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM and i was thinking of buying a 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade? I do light video editing and day to day tasks like word processing, email etc.
How would the performance of the Macbook Air with the Core i5 with 4 gb Ram be compared to the old Macbook Pro 15 with Core i7 Quad 2.0 ghz with 8 GB Ram.
    Thanks
    Sunny

The main advantage would be a solid state drive. This will improve performance and speed moreso than RAM considerations. The disadvantage will be a loss of storage space. Moreover, one of the disadvantages of a SSD is that the more storage space used on it, the slower it becomes and the quicker it will deteroriate.
If you do video editing, I would take the GPU into consideration. Does your 15'' come with a discrete GPU? The integrated GPU on the MBA (intel HD 5000) is better than the 2011 MBP integrated GPU (3000), but it includes no discrete GPU.
Depending on how much storage space you use on your HDD currently + how many graphics intensive programs you run, you may want to consider upgrading your current machine with a SSD, upgrading your RAM on current machine to 16 gb (~160$ through macmemory or newegg), or purchasing a new Macbook Pro rather than Macbook Air.
    Last thing I would add:
You will never be able to upgrade MBA RAM. It is soldered to the logicboard on the new models, non-retina included. You may wan to opt with the 8 GB RAM configuration.

  • When i use my infocus portable projector, the trackpad on my mid 2013 macbook air completely stops working.

i have the new 2013 macbook air and like i stated above, the trackpad on the macbook completely stops working. i cant use it to navigate which forces me to use a wireless mouse to be able to navigate at all. i was wondering why this happens and if there any soulution. the projector is plugged in through usb and im not sure if that might be the problem ?

I wouldn't expect a projector to affect the trackpad like that. Possibly if you go into System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Mouse & Trackpad and uncheck Ignore trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present.

  • Mid-2013 Macbook Air Battery Life has become awful-Not Mavericks related

I have a Mid-2013 Macbook Air that I bought in July. i5, 1.3 GHz, 8GB RAM, 500 GB SSD.  I honestly thought that my horrible battery life was due to the recent upgrade to Mavericks (many MBAir users are having problems with 10.9), so I downgraded to 10.8.5 this AM.  With my backlit keyboard off and the screen at a mid-level of brightness, I am barely getting 2hrs of battery life.  Before I go make an appointment with the Apple Genius, I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions.  I saw other threads on this issue, but none of them seem to really help.  Below is the EtreCheck file (there seems to be a lot of Symantec traffic, but I am not sure that is the cause).  Also, I am also running  "hidden" so I wonder if the constant location services are draining the battery.  Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks.

    Yes,
After Mavericks install, your "time remaining" WILL BE INACCURATE until you do a SMC reset in many case
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
There is a HUGE distinction here about someone getting less batt. life in actuality .......or are they just reading the "time remaining" and using that as a true indicator which is certainly is not.
Ive seen 3 notebooks after SMC reset jump 4+ hours in "time remaining" and slowly climb after 3+ full charge cycles.
Until things settle down, nobody should trust what the 'time remaining' says.

  • I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.
    Also intel mentions it here:

  • Mid 2013 Macbook Air - Worth the upgrade

    Hey,
    I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch (early 2011)
Im looking at getting a desktop computer (preferebly the Mac Pro when released) and I want to know if I should sell my Macbook pro and get the mid 2013 Macbook Air, to use for uni as the MBP is quite heavy.
    Cheers

Just sold my Mid 2011 MacBook Air for £510 - I;m very pleased with the new MacBook Air June 2013

  • Macbook Air or Macbook Pro

Yes, I know you hear this question a million times a day but I think it's different per person. Here's some information about me: Firstly, I am comparing the 13" MBA (128gb) model with the 13" MBP model but I did have a question regarding the 11" MBA that I will get to in a moment.
I plan on starting college this Fall so portability is a small factor, where obviously the Air has the edge. However, I don't see a major difference with the pro.
I understand the importance of a solid state drive and starting up quickly will also play a small role. Again, I know the Air has the edge here but are the start up times on a pro really that bad?
I play video games. Mainly World of Warcraft, and I don't require maximum settings.
Heat is an issue, I don't like my legs getting hot an uncomfortable while I'm trying to relax and browse the web
I am decent with Photoshop and Illustrator however I doubt I will ever be using them too avidly, but the possibility is there.
I mostly use the internet for social networking, but I do also watch quite a bit of TV and I am looking in to signing up for Netflix.
My friend has a MBP that has lasted over 6 years (Phenominal for a laptop IMO) can I expect the same life span with the MBA?
Should I look in to purchasing the insurance with either of the variants, or should I expect a reliable machine for a while. (Note that I am not computer illiterate and I can solve simple problems on my own.
Is upgrading to the i7 on a MPA worth the money?
I stream most of my music off of the internet through services such as Grooveshark, so space isn't much of an issue but some programs will be there (Like WoW which takes up 30+GB) Is an external drive a reliable solution to this problem? Any reccomendations on portable HDD's?
Price is something to consider, but lightly.
Important final note: I have an 8 core rig sitting at home to do anything that requires a lot of memory/power. This will mostly be for daily use around the house when I'm not in my room locked away and when I get to college for writing papers.
Regarding the 11" MBA I was just wondering of the 128gb model of it is much different from the 13" does the .1 GHz clock speed really make any difference? I'm also trying to avoid the whole "Netbook" feel, netbooks feel flimsy and cheap and I simply don't want to spend this kind of money on something that isn't going to make me feel like I have a reliable machine. Also I see it's upgradable to 256gb SDD, which I don't see as being worth it in the long run if I have a relable external.
I know, wall of text but I am seriously torn between which of these 3 laptops I should get with my iPhone
One final question, does Apple offer a cloud service for MBA/P I could use in place of an external HDD?

Ill try to go through these, one by one, since I have owned BOTH the Air and the Pro and am quite familiar with both laptops.
    1.  I am in college.  I MUCH prefer the Air to the Pro for its portability.  The Air is TWO POUNDS lighter than the Pro.  This may not seem like much to you, but when you have your computer AND a bunch of books, notebooks, pens, calculator, markers, and other things in your bag, two pounds is a WORLD of difference.  When the Pro was in my backpack, I could tell it was there.  I LITERALLY cannot tell the difference of the weight of my bag when my Air is in it and when it is not.  Portability?  Air wins HANDS DOWN.
    2.  Huge difference in speed of startup.  Although it may not bother you either way.  My Air starts in about 17 seconds.  My Pro started in about 45.  This is complete startup, from power button push to usuable desktop.  You REALLY notice the speed difference when opening and closing apps and programs though.  The SSD drive makes a world of difference.  You CAN however, upgrade the Pro drive to an SSD, and get the same performance as long as you get a good SSD drive.  The Air also shuts down in about 3 seconds.  The Pro is about 15-20.
    3.  For WoW, the Air will suffice, but the computer will get FAIRLY hot while playing.  The graphics are integrated in the i5 processor.  The computer gets noticably warm when doing things like watching movies and such.  You shouldnt have a problem actually PLAYING the game though, as the graphics on the Air and the Pro are essentially the same.  The SSD drive makes a world of difference here as well.  Load times are absurdly low.
    4.  The Air rarely gets more than warm.  Just browsing the web wont heat it up at all.  Same with the Pro.  The only time I have EVER heard the fan on either is when I am watching full screen video on something such as Netflix, and even then, its barely audible.  It shouldnt be a problem for you, unless you use the computer on a bed or something.  You really need to have it on a flat surface when youre using it.  Or your legs, as long as its not completely covered on the bottom, you should be fine.  BOTH computers will behave similarly.
    5. Photoshop and Illustrator will run fine.  I wouldnt plan on doing HUGE projects with it, since the Air is limited to the 4GB of RAM.  The Pro can take up to 16GB of RAM I believe, even though the specs only say up to 8GB.  I could be off on this, but I really remember reading about people installing 16GB in their Pros and it recognizing all of it.
    6.  Netflix runs great on BOTH computers.  I have had not ONE issue with it on my Air.  Netflix depends more on the quality of your internet connection.  I have FiOS here at home, so I never have any problems.  The network at school is pretty crappy, but I have never had any problems streaming there either, on EITHER computer.
    7. I would expect ANY Apple laptop to outlast virtually ANY Windows computer.  I have had excellent experiences with ALL my Apple laptops.  Any MINOR problems that i HAVE had, have been taken care of by Apple without issues.  I would expect the lifetime of the Air to be superb as well.
    8.  The extended Apple Care is EXCELLENT.  If you have the extra money for it, then you should purchase it.  While the laptops are built far better than a Windows computer in general, things DO happen.  If and when things go wrong, it can get expensive REALLY fast.  A new motherboard would likely cost nearly the same as a new Air, and the Pro isnt much better in that respect.  If you can afford it, buy it just for the peace of mind.  It DOES NOT cover user damage however.
    9.  NO.
    10.  I would definitely look into an external HDD for putting WoW on.  It would be better than hogging up 1/4 of your HDD space internally.  You could also store movies and music, etc on the drive for when you are away from a WiFi spot.
    11.  The Air and the Pro cost NEARLY the same amount of money.  Especially if you decide you want an SSD drive in the Pro.
    12.  Either computer will serve you extremely well in this use case.
As far as the 11 inch Air, I also had thought of purchasing the 11 inch.  I went with the 13 inch Air for a couple reasons.  The 11 inch Air, configured with 4GB of RAM and the 128GB SSD, was ONLY $100 LESS than the 13 inch Air.  The clock speed PROBABLY wont make much of a difference.  But the way I see it, if you are going to spend THAT much money for the 11 inch Air, why not spend $100 more and get the faster proc, the bigger/higher resolution screen, and the SD card reader?  The 11 inch Air is nice, but the upgraded one just isnt worth the extra money, when you can get the better 13 inch version, for just a bit more.  The extra screen real estate is REALLY nice to have, especially if you are going to be watching movies and such.  The 13 only weighs .5 lbs MORE than the 11.  You wont even be able to tell the difference.
Apple doesnt really have Cloud for Mac yet, but its supposed to be coming in the next OS, Mountain Lion.  Hope this helps.

  • Performance of HDS in AIR on Macbook Pro Retina is terrible

    Hi
My client provides online streaming with the technology of Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming (protected by FlashAccess). The client is build with Adobe AIR. Recently, we've found the playback performance of HDS on Macbook Pro Retina is terrible. We see choopy all the time during the playback. The same streaming plays well in the browser and other Macbook Pro (non-Retina) computers.
I'm wondering if the latest AIR doesn't support Retina display well. Does anyone know if there is a workaround or when the updated AIR runtime can support Retina display well?
    Thanks.

Could you please open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Please post back with the URL and I'll also follow up internally.
    Thanks,
    Chris
