Wondering whether it is worth springing for the 256GB SSD MBP or going with the 750GB 7200 rpm HD MBP I initially anticipated.

I'm a filmmaker/photographer and an individual artist, not a company. My current 120GB Macbook is chugging and scraping, even with external HDs for Final Cut Pro and Aperture 3, so I'd likely need the bigger drive.  I'm also not loving having to carry an external HD for each application. And I've read in these forums some mention of SSD's not being entirely compatible with editing software, and then others who rave about it.  I use Aperture 3 and Photoshop quite often; Final Cut Pro less often but hope to increase that in the future.
I'm very low-tech and intuitive—the namebrands, the abbreviations, the booting from one drive to the next—is over my head and likely beyond my patience and ability to understand. I really just want a computer that will allow me to get on with my work.
Many thanks for any input!

Just some other thoughts on this matter.  You can always increase the HDD size later if you needs so require.  Currently the largest available are 1TB.  In a year there may be larger ones if the pattern of HDD capacity continues.  They can be installed by the user very, very easily.
I would also suggest to consider the anti-glare display.  The photographers, both professional and avid enthusiasts that I know say the the color accuracy is superior to the glossy.
I personally would spend extra dollars on a faster processor than a SSD.  They are over priced for value received at this time.
Ciao.

  • 2.0 or should I spring for the extra .16? Please help

    Hi all,
    am currently using a G5 2.3 DP tower and am thinking of jumping to a MBP. My questions is will the 2.0 be enough of should I spring for the 2.16 and will I see/feel the difference.
    Does anyone have an idea also on how much of a difference there will be in speed between my G5 and the MBPs?
    I intend to max out the ram at 2Gb and keep the standard 5400 rpm drives for now.
    Will use it for MS office, Java, iLife and web based design.
    Thank you all for any advice and input.

    Hi All and thanks to all who replied. It is greatly appreciated and has been very helpful.
    Here is the update.
    I initially ordered a 2.0BTO with a 7200rpm drive. First one arrived and was DOA - it had a really loud shreeking (not a whine but a loud shreeking) sound when turned on and and was very unstable with random KPs. Called Applecare and ran a HW test that detected a MoBo error so back it went.
    Second unit arrived and after a couple of days was also declared DOA as it would not charge consistantly and screen flickered.
    Ended up cancelling the BTO order and went to my local reseller who had a 2.0 5400rpm Hd in stock. Told him the issues I had so he suggested we open one up and test it to make sure it was ok and I was happy with it before I paid for it. I agreed and eventually left with my new 2.0 100Mb 5400rpm 2gig ram MBP.
    It's been a week since I brought it home and all is well. A couple of observations I have made after 3 MPBs are:
    1. I actually feel that the units did have different heat levels when running. This is very unscientific as one had a faulty MoBo and one had charging issues but the one I have now is warm, but has never reached the level of being uncomfortable even when running it flat out.
    2. 3 different MBPs with 3 different quality of builds. The first one was flawless, perfect and fit. Second one had a slightly misaliged screen that lifted at one corner. Third one is pretty good but the first one was the best.
    3. The Whine - I don't want to comment on this as there has been enough said and written bout this but I do want to say that in my opinion, if you listen hard enough to anything that is mechinical, high performance with active moving parts and high speed processors you will hear some sounds. As long as it is not obtrusive, counter-productive or distracting or drawing attention to itself, I am ok with it.
    4. I think the week of build does not assure you of the quality of MBP. It is a hit and miss thing if you end up with one that is less than fully functional. The first BTO was a wk 13 the second was a wk 15 and the one I am happy with is a wk 14. A friend has a 1.83 wk 10 machine that is perfect as well while one of her friends has a wk 11 and has not had any issues. Funny thing is the shop owner I bough it from said there have been people coming in and asking what week the MBP was and not staying when they found out it wasn't the latest production week.
    Anyway, I hope this has been useful info and again, a big thank you to all who replied and gave their input and suggestions. Greatly Appreciated
    Cheers

  • In the MBP 15" should i get the 750GB, 5400rpm or the 500GB, 7200 rpm?

    i have opted for the 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, because i really needas much speed as possible and power, and i will be installing 8gb ram when i buy it. I will be ruinning programes such as logic pro, so when using many different plug-ins and running programmes such as pro tools or reason at the same time, i feel i am gonna need speed as well as the power of the quad core...so i wondered whether it is worth getting the 500GB HDD with 7200rpm, instead of the 750GB HDD, 5400 rpm. The space i dont mind about because i dont intend to store much on the mbp itself, i will be buying a usb powered external HDD...so what should i chose...thanks Ben

    SSD 256GB would be the fastest, but you can do 3X faster with a third party product, a OCZ-Vertex3
    A 7,200 RPM 500GB would be ideal balance of performance and storage as a single drive, it's completely erasable.
    You can get a kit to replace the Superdrive with a 7,200 500GB drive though.
    SSD has limited writes, is NOT 100% erasable, despite what software says. So it makes a good boot/program drive, let the second hard drive take the brunt of the wear and tear. But  alas,no Superdrive, but the kit provides a external enclosure.
    voiding warranties most likely.

  • How do I know if a core I5 and 5400 rpm drive is ok for me or if I should get a core I7, 7200 rpm dr

    Buying a new laptop.  My old Dell Inspiron is giving up the ghost.
    How do I know if a core I5, 5400 rpm drive is good enough for me or if I should get a core I7, 7200 rpm drive laptop?  Also can I get an I5 with 7200 rpm or an I7 with 5400 rpm?  Need some recommendations.  I am not a computer expert so need some good explanation on what to get and why?  I don't do video games on the laptop.  Mainly use it for mail, Excel, word, internet searches, internet videos, etc.
    This question was solved.

    I actually have the Envy Ultrabook is why I asked. HP provided me one for a testing unit so we here on the Forum could keep abreast of their latest offerings. The mSSD accel cache is amazing. It gives ultrafast boot times and hard drive access. It does make the laptop hard to work with for tekkies, but for most users who will not try to monkey around with the OS, like dual boot with Linux or reload with a clean install of your own Windows 7 and other similar stuff it is a great performer...no need for a 7200 rpm drive.

  • Can I replace the 5400 RPM drive with a seagate 7200 RPM drive in a Lenovo B570

    Hi there,
    I have a Lenovo B570-1068AFU system that comes with a 5400 RPM HDD.  Does this system suppor 7200 RPM HDD upgrades? I would like to replace the current 5400 RPM with a segate 7200 RPM.  Possible?
    Thank you for all your replies.

    To add a little to what Tanuj said, you may have a (fixable) issue when moving to the new drive.
    Depending on when your laptop was built it may have a legacy (512-byte sector) or Advanced Format (4k-byte sector) hard drive.  Many/most larger drives on the market are AF.   If you migrate from legacy to AF, you may notice that Windows Update has stopped working.  Windows 7 is supposed to handle AF drives correctly, but there are many cases where it doesn't until updated, or an additional driver is installed.  The situation is worse with XP, but also fixable.
    You may well not have any problems with this, but if you do I have some notes and links to fixes over here:

  • Is apple care worth it for the iphone4s?

    I was wondering who has bought Apple Care for their iphone?  Do you think it is worth it??

    Well Applecare + gives you up to two replacements for breakage incidents, so I think it's worth it. For $99.00 it's worth the piece of mind. I know that Apple will do a one time replacement for iPhone 4 but something tells me that this will be coming to an end with the new plan being available for 4S. If you can swing it, it's worth it to me.

  • I bought a 13' MBP 3 days ago and realized I couldn't run my school program as it's too lag. So I was wondering if i could change it for the 15' by topping up the difference. Can it be done?

    As mentioned above, I bought a MBP 13' 3 days agovthat has intel HD graphics 3000. I can run my school programs but it's super slow, so that defeats the purpose why I went to change my lappy. So i was wondering if i could exchange this 13' for the 15' one since it has a better graphics card. Do you think Apple will be able to do that? Since their policy is to make all customers happy with their purchase.
    PS Im not so well informed about all these graphics card thing and thought Mac was good for designing stuff. And I bought in Singapore.
    Any help is very much appreciated! And Thanks in advance!

    Yes if you hurry, there is a restocking fee I think though. You'll have to check with the store you bought it from.
    You want the 15" or better, nice video card in there and a  anti-glare option
    3D game to your hearts content. the 13"  is weak.

  • Is the $250 price difference worth it for the 2.6Ghz v 2.7Ghz?

    I am looking to buy a MBP for college use and I need (well, I *want*) a very fast computer to get stuff done. So, (hence my question) is the difference enough for me to pay that amount of money? The only reason why I am asking is because I don't want to end up being "I should've...." but at the same time I don't want to pay for something I am probably not going to notice.
    Also, I don't really know my 'stuff' when it comes to computers so I'll ask this as well: Does Flash Storage affect computer performance (opening of apps, surfing the web, etc) and what is the difference, if any, between the 512GB v 768GB storages (besides the obvious small-large capacity)?
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    yes, flash storage is much fater then a traditional HDD.
    what is the difference, if any, between the 512GB v 768GB storages (besides the obvious small-large capacity)?
    only difference is the space.

  • 750GB 7200 RPM HDD for dv6t

    What happened to the high performance drives 7200 RPM for the dv6t quad laptops? Should I settle for a 5400 RPM or is the performance difference that significant? Thanks...

    Hi,
    Probably you can not see the differences BUT some improvemets for sure. There are few articles about this but they all out of date. SSD is the way to go but still very expensive. I would go for the bigger HDD & faster RPM.

  • Is 8gb worth it for the new 13" Retina MBP? or should i stay at 4gb?

    So im planning on buying the new retina MBP. Really not sure if 8gb is worth it or if i should stay at 4gb. I plan on using this as my main computer for School and Home.

    Get the 8gb.
    Back when it was possible to add memory yourself starting out with the minimum and adding more memory if you needed it was the way to go but now you're stuck with what you buy and if you undersize the memory you will not be happy with the system.

  • Is ShapeShifter Worth It For The iMac?

    I am a new iMac owner and I'm going to be getting my Mac in 4 days. So before I download it I need a heads-up. The reason I'm asking this question is because I had WindowBlinds for my PC and it just seemed to screw it up. I just want to know if anyone out there has ShapeShifter and it they found it slowed down or affected the Mac in anyway. Also the same w/ Mighty Mouse. Looking forward to your feedback!

    ShapeShifter is quite nice, but I think you'll need to have more than 1GB of RAM to avoid any slowing down.
    I'd recommend 2GB + to fully appreciate ShapeShifter.

  • What's the best way to know whether an application is running for the first time? (C#)

    I seen suggestions like making a registry entry, or making an entry in the application specific settings file. But what's the best practice? I want to do some custom tasks if that is a first run.
    Also, I am deploying my application using per machine MSI installer. So un-installation not deleting the user specific config files that's get created under AppData.
    Thanks Prasad

    Hello,
    Whenever possible I prefer to avoid the registry. The following works once per user where we see if a specific folder exists or not, if it does not then do first time initialization work then set a setting in the project which causes a user config file to
    be written to the location for storing user settings per user.
    You first need to create a setting in the project, in this case I did
    var config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.PerUserRoamingAndLocal);
    string configPath = config.FilePath.Replace("\\user.config", "");
    if (System.IO.Directory.Exists(configPath) )
    Console.WriteLine("This is not the first time");
    else
    // Do one time setup here
    Properties.Settings.Default.FirstTimeValue = "1";
    Properties.Settings.Default.Save();
    Console.WriteLine("This was the first time");

  • Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job? Motion and Final cut

    Hi all, just got my new 2008 Mac Pro with a ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card
    I have a dell 24"monitoer running at 1920x1200 pixels
    I am just about to buy the final cut studio package and I'm wondering if I need to spring for the 8800GT card?
    so my question is: just how taxing on the gpu is Motion? is the Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job running at 1920x1200 pixels?

    Rob Morgan at Barefeats.com has some benchmarks that compare the 2600 XT to the 1900 XT in a 2.8 8 core machine. In his test the 2600 XT was only a hair slower with Motion. I have not noticed any performance hit with the 2600 XT. I plan on sticking with the 2600 XT.
