Wondering whether large USB drive is being recognised.

Hello. I bought a new 500GB drive USB after dropping my 60GB drive and thinking it damaged. The new drive would not mount itself to the desktop when the computer is already on, only if it was on at start-up. After disconnecting the drive the Finder complains that a disc was not put away properly, and then shows a greyed-out icon of the drive.
Have also tried a known-working 400GB drive which also does not mount. Both are visible to Apple System Profiler but nothing else.
I've been round the houses a bit with this and my question is:
is there anything OS-wise that prevents the machine from seeing a drive the size of 400-500GB? (Even though advertised as suitable for OS9 etc).
Is there anything else that might be going on?
All help appreciated: quite apart from the cash involved in buying the drive, I feel exposed with no viable large back-up facilities!
Many thanks...
Beige G3 Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi, Bousque. With the large drive connected to the Powerbook running OS X, open Disk Utility and partition the big drive (using the Mac OS Extended format on each partition) so no partition is larger than about 190GB. Then test it again on your B&W G3 running OS 9.
Unfortunately, a drive connected to the B&W's built-in USB 1.1 ports will only operate at USB 1.1 speed: about 1/30-1/40 of FireWire speed, and 1/25-1/35 of real-life USB 2 speed. That is to say, data transfers between computer and drive will crawl along at a maximum of less than 1.5MB/second. If you're only reading and writing an occasional file to/from the external drive, that may be OK with you. But if you're backing up a large amount of data to it, expect the backup to take at least 11.5 minutes per gigabyte.

  • Mounting my USB drive without being root

    Hi,
I would like to mount my USB drive without being super-user.
The command I run for mounting the drive is :
    sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash

    relevant options in /etc/fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system>        <dir>         <type>    <options>          <dump> <pass>
    usbfs                  /proc/bus/usb usbfs     noauto              0      0
    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom   iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd   udf   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb1 auto noauto,user,exec 0       0
    /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb2 auto noauto,user,exec 0       0
you need to create mountpoints first:
    /mnt/usb1
    /mnt/usb2
user will have to belong to the right groups (storage, video, optical, camera)
usb has nothing to do with sata/scsi/ata as long as I remember usb device was sdX where /dev/sdX corresponds to the port connected.

  • Qosmio F10 - USB devices not being recognised properly

    Hi there,
I've been having major problems with the USB ports of my Qosmio F10. When ever I try to plug in a USB device, the F10 recognises there is something there, but always categorises it as an unknown device. For example, everytime I try to attach a USB mouse, it does not instantly recognise it, even after previously having gone into the device manager and manually installing a driver.
This has been the case since I bought the laptop 5 months ago, but I cant ignore it any longer.
    I have already tried :
    - uninstalling all USB controller and hub drivers and reinstalling
    - making sure that power save for the usb devices was not ticked
-ticking "install software anyway" in the driver signing options
When I open up device manager my USB looks like this
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller - 24CD
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C2
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C4
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C7
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
Any help on this is much appreciated as its driving me nuts :-)

    Hi
I agree with Jack. You have suggested that the USB devices were recognized but as an unknown device. In this case the device drivers are needed.
Which USB devices did you connect?
Sometimes some USB devices cannot be recognised properly because of the low power of the USB ports. If the USB device needs more power than 500mA standard power the OS could has some problems with the recognition.
In this case you need a external power supply or a USB hub with the power supply.

  • USB Drive not being recognized through Parallels

I cannot get my USB drives to work on the PC side of Parallels. I used to have no problems with this but now get a message that the "device is being used by another process." Is there a way to determine what "process" this would be or is there another resolution to this? Thanks.

  • Hard Drive not being recognised in BIOS - Equium A60

Hi hope someone can help. I have a Toshiba Equium EA60-173 and the hard drive is not being recognised in the BIOS. When I take the hard drive out and put it in another laptop it is detected fine. I have also tried another hard drive in the Toshiba and that doesnt work either. Therefore I suspect the IDE controller has gone, but is there anything I can do to confirm this? I wish there was some option in the BIOS to force a detect. I have successfully updated the BIOS but still the same.
This laptop is only just out of warranty so if it is the controller would I need to replace the motherboard? Are there any other options available to me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Neil,
Unless there is some physical\problem with the Hdd connector/cable then it is quite likely that you will need a new mainboard for your notebook. I suggest you contact an authorised Servic Partner and ask them to check your notebook and give you an estimate of the costs of the repair. Then you can try to shop around for any cheaper alternatives.

  • My Canon PIXMA MG2440 USB is not being recognised and I can not print anything..?

I cannot use my printer as the USB is saying its not recognised.
I never needed a driver for this printer before and it used to work fine.
I have no idea how to get my printer to work as I cant connect it to my laptop?

    Hi mrsrsimmo,
If the printer is not being recognized, please try connecting the printer to another USB port on your computer, and also use a different USB cable if you have one.  We also recommend installing the latest drivers and software for the printer.  Since you have the PIXMA MG2440, please click here to go to the Support and Downloads page on the Canon Europe website where you can download the drivers.
    Hope this helps!

  • Problems with Starcam clip driver not being recognised / working.

    Hi
I have recently purchased a starcam clip as my wife kept nicking my web cam to skype her sister.
I installed as per the instructions and it did not work so I de-installed and then went to the MSI web and got the latest driver for XP. This then works ok until i either unplugged the camera or shut down. I then have to re-install each time i want to use the camera >:(. If i have the camera plugged into the same usb as the last install then the computer (Acer travelmate ) shows the camera installed and plugged in but wont actually work unless I re-install . any suggestions?

Hi I have now made some progress. If I run the setup.exe as downloaded from the MSI web site the camera works as I would expect. (colour washout aside - but the thread on the 370i cam has explained this)
(1)The next time I start my computer the camera is recognised but Amcap has the error message of "This graph cannot preview" . The camera is listed in my computer but if I select the camera I get "creation of video preview failed - Check connection and check it is not being used by another application".
I can get the camera to work by running the setup.exe file again but this is a drag.
(2)If I swap to another  USB port then I get the "found new hardware" icon and the new hardware wizard starts.
(3)If I start up with the camera unplugged and plug into the port on which the camera was in on the initial installation then I get the same result as (1).
Anyone any suggestions - I do not believe it is a hardware (camera) problem as it does work when initially installed.

  • USB Modem not being recognised in OSX

Sorry if this is being posted in the wrong forum.
I have an oldish Usb modem (Intel(R) AnyPoint(R) DSL Modem 3240 http://www.intel.com/support/network/dslmodems/sb/CS-009978.htm) that I have been using for a while with my PC laptop.
I have recently updated to a MacBook and was expecting this modem to be fine since it has worked succesfully with a friends older iBook (he simply plugged in the usb cable and was able to connect to the internet once I gave him the Username/Password. No software installation was required) but on my MacBook the modem doesnt seem to be recognised.
I have followed the install instructions to the letter but when it comes to plugging in the usb modem nothing happens and no modem is found (the l.e.d on the front of the modem stays off)
If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. I only need access to broadband very occassionaly and would like to avoid having to buy a new modem. Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Generally usb modems don't work or don't work well on Macs
IMO, that is a bit of a sweeping statement. Most people in the UK use a USB modem, not least because they were supplied free by your ISP.
    Get a modem with ethernet
Better still get a router, which what many UK ISPs now provide free.

  • Usb devices not being recognised

hello my external devices such as my printer or edirol sound recoreder are not appearing on my desktop when i plug them in. After seeking advice i have located them in the system profiler (usb part) and it can read and recognises them. however i do not know what to do next does anyone know what to do as i have no idea and really need it to work for my uni work, please help cheers

    First welcome to the discussions.
Most USB periperals come with either Cd or software to run them. Printers, Scanners, Cameras, and some don't.
Each one can be a little differnt. I will use a Printer, If it is compatible.(OSX has some drivers installed to use these devices but not for all.)
First let's start from scratch pull the power on your printer, and wait a minute or so. Plug it back in and restart your computer.Make sure the USB is plugged in when you do this, This will reset the printer and the computer.
place the disc that came with the printer in and Install the software, as soon as you are done go to your printer manufactures site and search for the latest download for your Printer and Operating system. Download it.
Go to your Mac HD and then Applications folder and you will see a folder that matches your printer, drag the folder you downloaded from there site to this folder and double click it inside that folder. Depending this printer folder can be named different things, such as (HP952c Printer) or set up or Install. It can also be located in the Utility folder.
Open it and see if there is an Install option. click it and launch it.
This may seem a little confusing, but it's not really,
Most people have problems with one of a couple a different things.
    Either there printer isn't compatibble,
Or they havent opend the folder in the Applications, or Utility folder to launch there printer drivers.
After you read this it should be pretty easy for you. Come back and tell us if this helped. Don

    All help would be welcomed

just to add to the confusion...
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
    A) an application (such as iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
    or
    B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, he thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal.
