Wont boot, flashing sleep light

MacBook Pro 13"
Mid-2010 A1278
Serial: WQ********ATM
When Power Button pressed, it is completely unresponcive except for the sleep light on the front flashes
I have noticed, If it is off the charger and you press power button, it will flash on then off just once.
However, if it is on the charger and you press power button it will flash on and off over and over, even if you then remove charger
Have searched heaps of Articles, they tend to point towards either Battery or RAM....
Battery is fully charged, battery indicator on the side shows its full when pressed.
RAM is fully populated, have removed one stick, tested, reinstalled then removed the other stick, tested, and then used RAM from a known working MBP similar model, all no good.
Have had plenty of experience with these A1278s, but never come across this before!
Thanks in Advance for any help!!

  • G61-327CL wont boot; Flashing power lights

A friend gave me his old laptop because it didn't work. HP G61-327CL. When you try to turn it on, the power/charge/dvd lights at the bottom left just flash 3 times. The middle (charge) light seems to be brighter than the other 2, so it's possible that's actually the only one flashing, but I have no clue. The charging light comes on when it's plugged in. I've tried a hard reset, after which it gives four flashing lights, the last one being held for a second.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hey Tyeillin,
Going by what you said, it seems like there is a graphics card issue with that notebook. Take a look at this document for info: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01443366&cc=us&destPage=document&lc=en&tmp_docn...
If that matches up with what you are seeing, then the unit will need repair - either a new system board and/or graphics card.

hi there i tried to restart my mbp this am and it would not power up, I get a grey screen, three loud constant beeps and flashing sleep light in time to the beeps!
THe HD sounds as if it is starting up, I hear the whirring then nothing but this annoying been and a stoney grey screen!
    please help!!

Do you have upgraded ram in your MBP? I believe that 3 beep signifies that your computer has failed ram tests on both banks of ram.
Some RAM may appear to pass the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) but still cannot be used by the operating system. In this case, the computer will display a gray screen, sound three tones and blink the power LED on the front of the computer three times, pause, and repeat the blinking until the computer is turned off.
The solution to both of these situations is to first re-seat the memory and test the computer again. If the memory fails the POST test again, try memory that has been verified to work correctly on another system (i.e., "known-good") or order new memory from the Apple Store.

  • Wont boot: I get beeps and flashing sleep light

The PB-T boots to a beeping noise and then the sleep light flashes once: long, then 3 short flashes.
I reseated the RAM and swapped RAM, to no avail.
Wont boot from anything even install disks. Did the PRAM too (which never does anything). Tried the reset switch on the back too. Nothing.
Ideas? I remember the beeps are usually related to RAM. no?

    Hi Steve,
It sounds like you have no good RAM banks, which basically means a new/replacement LB. May not be cost-effective for an older TiBook to replace the LB.

  • Won't boot up - sleep light blinking 3 times

Hi - I have a macbookpro - it suddenly shut down and now won't boot up. When I press the power button I hear the hardrive make a noise " tzz tzz' then nothing - except the sleep light is blinking 3 times a second every few seconds. - I've tried taking out the battery and holding down the power button - taken out the RAM - nothing.
and of course my 90 day warranty ran out last week -
    Help gratefully appreciated....

Hi - Thanks for your reply, I had a look round the net and found that diagnosis - I don't think it's applicable to me as the machine was up and running to start with. My girlfriend was ill in bed and watching a dvd - could this have overheated the machine and are the 3 flashes to do with this? I've since found this
    http://static.scribd.com/docs/1ek00bgxjmm4u.swf?INITIAL_VIEW=width
which says it could be down to overheating - if so is there a way to reboot or is it a trip to the mac store ??

  • Broken Charger, Flashing sleep light, etc

Hi this is my first Apple Product and my first issue so I hope you guys can help me with it.
I was given a 15-inch Macbook Pro July 2010 as a gift for making it to college. Last night, after opening up my Macbook from a sleep state with the adapter plugged in, the charger light suddenly goes out. I've tested the charger and determined that it's dead. At the time, I was somewhat peeved but I understand that electronics can be erratic at times and I wasn't in dire need of it. This afternoon however, I forgot that the adapter didn't work so while working on homework it suddenly crashes. I ask my roommate if I could borrow his charger (knowing that it works on my MBP since I tested it the previous night) and when I attempt to turn it on I notice that the charging light is still green, the computer has its sleep light flashing at regular intervals and (I assume) the hard drive starting then dying.
So in summary: charger dies after waking MBP from sleep --> computer's battery goes to 0 charge --> roommate's charger that previously worked fine stays green but doesn't start/sleep light blinking/hard drive noise.
Any help would be appreciated since I have some unfinished homework.
    Thanks

  • Flashing sleep light

Can't get my 15" MBP to run (just get a blue screen). Can anybody tell me what it indicates when the sleep light flashes 3 times quickly repeatedly with the screen open?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The flashing light tells you that you have a RAM problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341
Try reseating the RAM and see if that fixes it. If not, you might have to replace your RAM, but since RAM generally has a lifetime warranty, it shouldn't cost you anything.
    Good luck!

  • Won't Boot, Just sleep light on.

I've tried the "reset pram" thing. I've tried taking out the battery. I've moved the RAM chip to the other slot aswell to make sure it was in correctly. I tried holding the power down for 10 seconds and then turning it on again (that usually works) but nothing. When I press the power button I sort of hear a fan come on quietly and the sleep light comes on too, but no boot or nothing.
    SO ANNOYING!

    SMC Reset...
1.If the computer is on, turn it off.
2.Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3.Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4.Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5.Press the Power button to restart the computer.

  • PC wont recongize; flashing amber light

My shuffle worked fine until last night. Now it is "USB device not recognized" yada yada...the device malfunctioned, yada yada.
I have un-installed and re-installed all Itunes and IPod software. I have tried stopping and starting the "ipodservice.exe" in the tasklmanager. I have tried it in another PC (same problem). I cannot re-format it because Windows will no longer even acknowledge its presence.
Is it dead? Do I need to return it? If so, will they replace it (I bought it in March)?

I am having the same problem. The orange light just flashes and that is it.
I am unable to re-format. I've reinstalled all software and all the suggested solutions.
Any idea how to fix? I bought less than 2 months ago.

  • Oh S_it, my intel iMac 2008 wont boot, flashing question mark is all I get.

Bought a friends' intel duo iMac 2008 which was working just find until a couple of day's ago and now when I try to boot it up all I get is a flashing question mark. I unplugged all components, including the electric cord and that worked the first time but now nothing. I don't have the startup or recovery disks. Must I have these...what's a girl to do? HELP!!!
    Imac 2008 Mac OS X (10.5.4) previously owned, 2G

You don't need those discs, unless you need to test for Hardware, or reinstall the original operating system.
But you should get them anyway. Any software they installed on your machine, you should have the discs for as they are not their's to give away copies because of licensing restrictions.
The first step to try is zapping the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Then attempting a data recovery if there is no backup*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html#RECOVER
If there is a backup, initially try to repair the directory*:

  • Help please, My 945P Platinum p4 640 wont boot properly Orange Light??

If i turn it on on without the graphics card in i get one long beep then 2 short ones, i think this means monitor or display card error(award bios i think), the d bracket goes right through to initialising floppy drive. as soon as i plug the card in and try the d bracket goes all four red , then straight to 1,red 2,orange???, 3 red, 4 green ive tried another card and different ram.

jakemon, as you removed the display card, you get long long beep and few shorts one, that means, you're pretty much done with the POST. Everything should have been initialized. Looks like it's something wrong with the card. Do yourself few favours (while I attend other threads )
    1. clear CMOS and give it another try.
    2. Try Google.com to look for any incompatibility between 945P chipset/MSI board and X300 display card
    3. verify that your BIOS is the latest, if not,
    4. flash to the latest BIOS
    5. if BIOS the same, change your power supply to a better one.

  • L305D-S5893 Randomly wont boot after sleep

    hello,
I have been having this problem for a while but when I close my computer for the night and try to turn it on in the morning sometimes it will start others it won’t. The computer powers up but I don’t hear the HDD spin up.  The front LEDs and the DVD drive LED will be lit but the computer is completely unresponsive.  I cannot turn it off through the power button, I have to take out the battery, power cord, and completely restart the computer.  Any help would be much appreciated since I have already sent it back to Toshiba 3 times and I still have the same problem.

    Hi, BJZTX -
    Try resetting the PMU -
    Article #95037 - G4 (AGP) - Resetting PMU
Note - the procedure in that article applies to all G4s except the )PCI) model; although the location of the PMU button varies, it is generally near the battery.
Try rolling the battery in its holder, to ensure good contact.
Check to make sure all internal cables are well-seated - that usually entails breaking and making the connections (do that with the machine powered off and unplugged).
Some dust can be conductive - make sure no dust clumps got blown into the pins for RAM, CPU, PCI sockets, etc.
Ditto the jumper pin blocks on the drives. While there, make sure no jumpers got dislodged or blown off.

  • Sleeping light & keyboad lights failure

    Dear all,
I read the posts archived in these forums on the following issue but as there was no real guidance coming forward I thought to restate the issue I'm facing in case there is fresh knowledge on it.
A couple of weeks ago, the sleep light on my powerbook G4 started to come on all the time. I didn't noticed it until tonight, but it seems that when this occurs the backlit keyboard is also non-functional. This doesn't happen all the time, but now most of the time.
A friend told me that this was an indication of an issue with the USB ports, which would be grave because they are linked directly to the logic board.
I'm not sure if it is related or not, but I had some relatively serious problems with the directory of my hard drive (sibling link failures). I spent a couple of days cloning and then fixing the problems with Diskwarrior and Disk Utility. It appears the directory is fine now (though I did have to do an archive and install and could, if necessary, clone the good drive and wipe the original drive and start completely afresh). The problem, however, of the sleep light has not gone away. My friend had suggested that an erase and reinstall might cure the issue.
Can anyone give any practical advice on this issue? I cannot afford to lose my logic board, especially given that I live in Egypt where a new logic board would be hard to find and may not be able to be fitted.
Should I worry? Does this symptom mean that my logic board is on the edge of the abyss?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
    Dr Ian Douglas

    Hey All,
I finally decided to check here, as none of the fixes I attempted appeared to be working.
If it is an L-Board problem, them I'm in deep doo.
I'm currently in Panama, and thought that it might be a problem with some sort of variance in the power cycle here, as my first couple of days here, the PowerBook refused to charge fully.
It would keep at a constant level, and only draw power when it dropped below.
None of the various locations I tried provided relief, until recently, and now P]power's fine and at 100%.
Except I noticed the flashing 'sleep light' last night, tried checking around.
No fixes, and in the last several hours, I just noticed the 'no backlit-keyboard' issue (as it got darker, and it didn't come on).
There's a MacStore (authorized reseller type), I'll have to try them and see if they can do anything, as my AC contract is still valid.
    Crikey, this *****.
