Wont connect file sharing

I can see my wifes mac pro in my finder but it wont connect as guest. She can see me and can connect. All settings for file share are checked. It worked the other day so I am at a loss.

It defeats the purpose of this application if you have to manually configure another computer. If file share is checked on both computers they should be able to access the drop box. Both computers can see each other but only one will connect. In the past it would connect as soon as I clicked on the name in the side bar. This no longer happens.

  • Nintendo DSi wont connect to Shared Internet.

Hi, I have my Mac Mini set to shared Internet so I can keep using the WPA for my wii, ps3 & psp, but use my computers airport card for WEP. My psp can connect fine, but my DSi will lose the connection during the test, any Ideas?

I found this on the internet because I have been having the same problem with my DS. Just follow these steps and it should work.
First you need to go to the system preferences panel. Click the sharing folder icon.
Under sharing, go to the internet tab. Go to the drop down menu and click "built-in Ethernet".
Below that there are check boxes, click "airport". Then click ariport options.
Put in a name, a short one is ideal, and then a password if you want. (only numbers) Click ok.
Now go to the firewall tab. If your brave enough, you can just turn off the firewall. Or...
Click "new". The port name is "other", make the description something short like, "my wii".
    THIS IS IMPORTANT.
    Under the "TCP Port Number(s)" field type (with the commas): 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, 443
Leave the UDP blank. Click ok.
Make sure that box is checked, go back to internet and click "start".
Your airport icon on top of the screen should be showing an upward arrow.
NOW...for the Wii setup. Fun isn't it?
Go to your wii setup, then internet tab. Click an empty network or erase one. Now click manual.
Enter the name of your network, what you labeled earlier. If you forgot, click the airport icon, it should show you what signal is being sent out.
Now click the arrow and enter your WEP key. The 10 digit numerical password you made. (unless you didn't)
Click the arrow again and where it says auto-obtain IP settings, click no. Enter these; (there will be a lot more zero's auto added when you click ok. leave them)
    IP: 10.0.2.11
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Router: 10.0.2.1
    Manual DNS settings:
Go to the next screen and again NO auto-obtain DNS.
    Primary DNS: 10.0.2.1
    Secondary: 10.0.2.11
Leave all the other windows, click save. It should connect.
To stop you Mac from sending the signal, click the airport icon, then internet sharing. You can now click "stop". You airport will go back to normal use. To re-connect to the wii, just go back to the internet sharing and click start. It'll keep all the previous settings.
    Good luck and good night.
(As a bonus, do the same wii setup for the DS to work, if you have one)

  • File sharing wont mount all volumes

    Hello,
I've been going crazy trying to figure this one out. I'm trying to share my Mac Pro files and have enabled file sharing from the networking system preferences, up until a month ago this was working fine. Now whenever I connect to my Mac pro as admin from my Macbook pro I only get my home folder and public folder to mount, the volumes on my mac pro wont show up on any computer I connect with. It was working fine for years and then one day just stopped. As a test, I just tried connecting to my Macbook pro from my Mac Pro and it lists all the volumes on my computer, So I don't think its my router or anything, but nothing has changed anyway. Any help would be great, thanks!

I'm having the same problem. I tried your suggestion and it worked on one of my two external usb drives but I'm still having problems on my other external.
It shows up on the shared list but when I click on it I get the message: The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "NamedDisk" cannot be found.
I've tried deleting all my network preferences, plist files etc. and running disk warrior on the nameddisk to no avail.
This problem just started a few days ago. Not sure what could have changed. I've had 10.5.7 running on this computer for a few weeks. I get the same error from any computer on my network trying to access this disk.

  • Connecting to shared machines (either via Share Screen or file sharing)

I have a MobileMe account and four computers in separate locations which I regularly need to connect between. Some are on static IP's and others are on dynamic IP's. So all of them have file sharing enabled as well as screen sharing enabled. They're also all registered in my MobileMe account. Anytime I'm in a Finder window, in the sidebar, I see Shared > (computer name) and see all the computers there. If I click on it, I'm offered two buttons, one to "Connect As" if I want to file share, and "Share Screen" if I want to VNC.
I would say 60-70% of the time I click on either of those buttons, it doesn't work. It takes about a minute to try and connect, then says, "Connection failed to (computer name). Please make sure screensharing is enabled...blah blah blah..." (it is)
However, 40-60% of the time if I click the same button again, it DOES work!
    Sometimes it takes several tries.
It's really frustrating that I can't reliably connect to the other computers in the MobileMe list.
Does anyone else see this and are there any suggestions? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Trying to connect to a computer that has a static IP vs. dynamic fails with about the same regularity. So I don't think that's it.
I also get about the same failure rate when trying to use Connect As to fileshare. So I don't think it's a VNC/screenshare-specific problem.
I've tried using DynDNS as an alternate way to reliably locate another of my computers. It fails with approx. the same failure rate, and sometimes works upon re-attempt.
    HELP!

Goto your System Preferences->Sharing, Then select the Internet tab.
From the drop down menu select 'Share your connection from: Kyrocera card.'
And in the 'To computers using' box tick built in ethernet and connect a network cable to your powerbook and the other end to your network.
Or if you have an airport card installed share the connection using your airport. Then other wireless devices can connect to your powerbook.

  • Why can't I connect to my shared computers for file sharing;I have 3 Macs and I can connect the other 2 but not my new Macbook air.

I have a black Macbook 4,1 running 10.7.5, an iMac 11,3 running 10.7.5 and a new Macbook Air 6,2 running 10.9.5., I have file sharing turned on on all machines. All machines are visible and I can connect all machines except for the Macbook Air. The Macbook air can see the other 2 Macs but does not connect to either of them or even give me the option to connect as a guest or a registered user. The other Macs connect to the Macbook Air but it will not connect with them. Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

  • File sharing/AFP skips "connect as"

I have a Mac-Lion and several accounts, both user and admin.  I turned file sharing on and selected AFP.  I can connect from another Mac-Yosemite as expected - to any account on Mac-Lion by entering the password when prompted.  With one exception.
I have an admin account xyz on Mac-Lion and an admin account xyz on Mac-Yosemite, different passwords. On Mac-Yosemite, in the account xyz when "connect to server", it skips the "connect as" prompt.  Connects straight to xyz on MBP-Lion. However, this does happen vice-versa. I also tested other accounts, say abc on Mac-Lion and abc on Mac-Yosemite, admin or standard user. No problem, always goes to the "connect as" window and asks for a password.
I also changed the password of xyz on MBP Lion many times, and delete the keychain, restarted, etc.  Also, MBP-Lion is off-cloud.  Still thee is this mysterious one-way password-free connection between the two accounts. What could that be and how can I reset it?
    Thanks in advance.

It turns out the iCloud causes this behavior. If I sign off iCloud in the account xyz on Mac-Yosemite, then I am prompted with the regular login window when I connect to Mac-Lion.  So some setting on Mac-Lion grants password fee access to connections from account xyz on Mac-Yosemite as long as that account is logged in iCloud. (xyz on Mac-Lion used to be signed in the same iCloud account, but I signed out and reset the keychain).  Any idea where that could be so that i can reset it?

  • Windows user can no longer connect to my File Sharing IP address

    Hello,
Since updating to OS X 10.4.9, Windows users can no longer connect to my file sharing IP address.
I have had no problems when I was using 10.4.8, and I have re-checked both the Windows computer and my Mac to make sure that the file sharing connection should be possible.
I think this may be some sort of firewall / security issue (?) in that the 10.4.9 update has downloaded something which now "hides" my Mac at this IP address. I am unsure how to resolve this problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Much obliged, in advance.

Can the Mac connect to the PC?
Have you checked the Workgroup is the same on the Mac
    in Directory Access>CIS/SMB?
Have you tried turning off the Firewall for a test?
    Has the IP changed?
    Hello!
Thank you for the suggestive questions above. I haven't "tested" any of them because I simply became exasperated with the "change" in 10.4.9 and went back to system 10.4.8
Of course, now everything is right with the world and I can once again have my Windows computer connect to my Mac.
Thank you for taking the time in trying to help me -- much obliged.

  • Personal File Sharing: Lost Connection

I'm trying to use my new miniStack external HD attached via Firewire to my Mac mini as a pseudo network drive. In other words, I want that drive available to my mini and my two iBooks. If I can get that working, I'd like it available to my XP box as well.
I have wireless internet via an Airport Express and cable modem throughout the house. All four computers are attached via wireless cards.
I've turned on personal file sharing on the mini using my administrator log in. I've also activated AppleTalk via the Airport settings in the Network preference settings.
I've also activated AppleTalk on my iBook and turned on personal file sharing.
All my Macs are running the latest version of OS X (10.4.7).
I restarted both machines after making the above setting selections. I then used the Finder on my iBook to search for the mini. I clicked on the Network icon, found 'servers', 'library', and the following folders: "home" which has my XP box readily accessible, "My Network" and "Workgroup". Each of these last has an icon for my mini.
When I double click on my Mini, it shows me all volumes on it, including my miniStack. I select one to connect to and get a beach ball followed by an error message saying "Server Connection Interupted: miniStack" and a single button marked 'disconnect'.
After I press the disconnect button (my only choice) I notice that personal file sharing on my mini is now turned off.
This exact same thing happens when I try to access the native internal HD on my mini so it isn't just the external stack that's the problem.
I've searched high and low through the fora here and can't find anything addressing this.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks and take care,
    Jeff

After much trial and error, I finally resorted to doing a Archive and Install on my mini. After doing so, everything works great. I still have no clue what the problem was but I now have no interest in finding out since it's working great.
Of note, the lost connection problem was unidirectional. I had no difficulties logging onto and accessing anything on either of my iBooks from my mini. Just the other way around.
    Take care,
    Jeff

  • Personal File Sharing Connection Timing Out

I'm having trouble personal file sharing connecting to one computer in my office. All the others work just fine and I can retrieve files and all. Oddly the computer that I can't read can connect to me.
When I try and connect, I go to the Network, I can see her computer, I double click it and get the following message:
    Contacting xx.xx.xx.xx
    Timeout in 120 seconds
And then it counts down the seconds and eventually nothing happens. I went into her System settings and checked and everything (that I know to check) is on and the IP address is the same one that is showing in my dialog box.
    Any ideas?

Several restarts later and it is still doing it. I can connect to others, but this one machine doesn't want to go. Anybody?

  • Personal File Sharing - Who is Connected to Me?

Getting a message now when I shut down my computer at work that says a user is connected to me through apple file sharing. Is there a way for me to figure out which user on our network that is?

    Open Terminal, then type...
    w
    or type...
    who
    Enter after either.

  • Personal File Sharing Turns off after an attempt to connect from other comp

I have personal file sharing turned on on my MacBook and when I attempt to connect to it from my iMac I get a typical logon windows and extended delay and then the message that the Server Connection was Interrupted. When I check Personal File Sharing on the MacBook it has been turned off even though I have locked the settings.
The problem exist whether I use my local Wireless LAN (Apple-N) or an ethernet connection. In both cases the MacBook the ethernet connection is with the a port on the Apple N wireless LAN

It may be solved for you, but I just discovered that since upgrading to 10.4.11 I can no longer connect to any of my other Macs. When I click on network NOTHING shows up in the Finder.
While I'm happy to grab random code posted by an unknown person and stick it in my system, I shouldn't have to. Clearly Whatever the update did to your Mac it did to my MacBook as well and most likely others. If this is the official fix for the problem, Apple needs to acknowledge it and offer a link to the file rather than relying on fix-it forums to solve their problems.
Apple seriously needs to test these updates a little more thoroughly before they make them available. I KNOW you are supposed to back everything up before you do it, yada, yada, yada ... but Apple has basically made the Software update feature an automatic function as if it is the best thing for your computer ... clearly that is not always the case.

  • Personal File Sharing Quites when trying to connect

Everytime I try to connect from another mac to my G5 the personal file sharing unchecks and blocks the connection. Firewall is off.

Okay I did it and then repaired permissions and this is what it changed:
    group is 501
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
User differs on ./Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist, should be 0, owner is 501
Permissions differ on ./Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist, should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are -rwxrwxrwx
Owner and group corrected on ./Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist
    Permissions corrected on ./Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
It only did stuff on that file and the -rw-rw stuff is that read write? because i don't want it changing that?

  • Got Connect to Server to work again, file sharing 4.9 to 10.1.5!!!

    Folks:
Have a number of unanswered questions lost on this forum, and been following as many of the threads pertaining to file sharing as possible--and finally pieced some of the suggestions, mostly from BDAqua, together and got the two units to connect. Before this I got "Log In Failed" or "Connection failed" error windows. Haven't had time to actually move files, but I did open some JPEG's from the 10.1 computer in the 10.4.9 . . . what got it working doesn't totally make sense--but it worked.
When I first posted my issue after erase & upgrade from 3.9 to 4.9 BD asked me if I had another User in account to do some testing with--and I said yes, but what will that do? And he said, ah, you could test things . . . wasn't real encouraging--I think I logged into one new account and tried to connect and it FAILed. Went on to the "roll the AppFileServer kext back to 4.8 version--didn't work. Kept whining--eventually everybody stopped replying. Then I saw another comment by BDAqua answering someone about some issue with having the same user name when trying to use File sharing; that was awhile back.
Today--put those ideas together and logged both computers into the other user and then used Connect to Server, entering IP address--got the Log In window--put password in and--IT CONNECTED, but only to a "Drop Box" folder that I didn't have "privileges" to open. Following another thread's idea I changed both of those accounts to "allow user to administer computer" in Acounnts. In Tiger I had to log back into the main account to do that--and then I tried to connect, and that time it worked. The most important thing is having another user name to enter--and then I could get access to the HD of either computer. Still some things to work on--going from the iBook to the iMac I can open all files, going from the iMac back to the iBook I can mount the HD, but some of the original files in my Home folder have red minus's and can't be opened. What was odd is that both of my other user accounts have the same name/password, but I could connect; but couldn't with the main accounts--having the same name/password. When I changed those extra accounts into admin also and then logged back into main accounts--I connected by using the name/password of the OTHER account in the second computer.
The Key is as BD "recalled seeing somewhere" that the User name should be different, so you can use another account on that computer. In Panther it didn't matter if both computers had the same name--in Tiger apparently it does. Hope this helps--took me a lot of messing/time to bring all the details together--1.5 months. A head's up from Apple might have been--nice???

    Rick/BDAq:
Verbosity doesn't really begin to cover it--that was the short version of the process. 1.5 months ago had 15 posts--100 posts later a solution was developed. Don't know if rolling back the kext to 4.8 is needed--won't get a chance to try doing a full install of 4.9 + Security update on my Ext HD to test what is really necessary. Or whether it is necessary to make the New Account an administrator or not; when they connected it was so surprising and so simple. I'd like to find the thread where it shows how to change the original User Name for the admin/computer & see if that is all that is needed. Like all creative people I named my units after me, my name. Now I'd like to change one to be "Johnny" or I'll name it "Tiger" after all the fiddling it's taken to find such a simple solution--I've grown attached to my OS. : - 0
Haven't had the chance to check the link to Hornware--thanks Rick, but Firefox couldn't find the server. BD--thanks for being there, buddy.

  • AirDisk File Sharing - Saving Files - Unable to connect via wires then...

OK, I followed these instructions from another poster as I was unable to save Microsoft Word documents directly to the drive via the "Save As" option...
    -------- PREVIOUS POSTERS INFO ----------
The solution that works for me is to mount the AirDisk(s) using SMB instead of AFP.
This means you should log on the AEBS and configure the Disk for Windows File Sharing - this is on the 'File Sharing' tab of the Disks configuration group.
You only need to put in a Workgroup Name (I used "Basestation"). Don't worry about the WINS Server.
You should update your AEBS, and turn of the AirDisk Utility.
You then mount your disk(s) using SMB. You can do this using the Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server.
    Enter the following:
    smb://"YourBaseStationName".local./"YourDiskName"
You should then be asked to enter the Workgroup name, the disk name and the disk password.
This should mount your AirDisk using SMB.
In my experience, this not only solved my problem re saving within Word/Excel, but also increased the speed with which I can access the AirDisk...
(If you want these Disks to mount automatically when you login, then Add these disks to you Start Up items in your login account...)
    -------- END POSTER ------
OK, so here is my problem... After doing this, I was able to save a file directly to the drive... I also followed these instructions as it said it would be faster overall... Now, I use Apple Backup 3.1 to backup both my laptops to my external hard drive on the Extreme. Well, when I brought up the drives on my desktop, the names didn't change, but the names of the drives were all capital letters... I think this threw off the Backup program because it said that it doesn't recognize this location, therefore, it showed that he had never backed up to that location before. So, figuring I changed it and caused a few minor changes, that I would just erase the hard drive, plug the hard drive directly into the laptop as I had done before to speed up the inital backup, and then go back to wireless backups thereafter as they wouldn't be "full" backups and would then be faster and tolerable. Well, when I went to connect the drive to my laptop via the USB cable, you could hear the drive mounting, you could see the drives mounted in Disk Utility, but they refused to show up on the desktop, no matter what. What does this mean? Did making the drives work as File Sharing drives make them no longer able to mount via a cable anymore? What gives? Any ideas?

    1. My USB 500GB External Hard Drive is currently
partitioned into three different drives. The Volume
Format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), what is
    that?
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is one of the HFS formats. Apple does not use the term HFS anymore but it is the same thing. You can find a good explanation about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HFS_Plus
    This will explain journalling, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalingfilesystem
    2. What is a FAT volume? What does FAT stand for?
    Where would I select that?
Here is an explanation about FAT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileAllocationTable
It is a choice in Disk Utility when you erase a disk.
    3. What is an HFS volume? What does HFS stand for?
    Where would I select that?
    See above: Mac OS Extended.
It is a choice in Disk Utility when you erase a disk.
    4. What does SMB mean/stand for?
It stands for Server Message Block explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ServerMessageBlock
It is a protocol for connecting to volumes over a network.
    5. What does AFP mean/stand for?
It stands for Apple File Protocol explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleFilingProtocol
It is also a protocol for connecting to volumes over a network.
    - Yes, I tried to save an MS Word document to my
AirPort Disk, but it hung up and I got the spinning
beach ball and ended in an error and I had to force
Microsoft Word to quit. Then I saw that posting and
I tried that, I was then able to open an MS Word
document and save it directly to the drive the first
time. However, like I said, it messed up my Backup
3.1 (When mounting as SMB) and made it believe that
this was a whole new drive and that it hadn't backed
up to it before, when it had, but only when I
    connected as AFP.
Did Backup work when you connected using AFP?
    - So, this would've been a simple fix if I plan on
staying with SMB share, however, when I go to connect
my USB External Hard Drive directly to my laptop, the
partitions do not mount on my drive like they had
before I made the drives a File Sharing device
    through AirPort Utility.
Try using Disk Utility to repair the disk or disk permissions and see if you can read it again.
    6. How do I get that drive to be recognized by my
computer again when I connect it directly to my
    laptop?
I don't know why this is happening you may want to call Apple Support about that.
    7. I don't care about anything Windows/PC, so
whatever way is FASTER and provides the BEST results,
    let me know!
If you don't have PCs then stick with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as your volume file format.
    8. Also, when I select "Connect to server" and then
click "Browse" and then "Network" nothing shows up in
there, but when I type the path in they connect just
    fine, why?
That's strange! All available network volumes should show up when you click on the Network icon in the Finder. I don't know why it is not working for you.
    THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!
    Some thoughts!
I would stick with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as your volume file format. If backing up to the network share is important to you, I would wait until Apple fixes the problem regarding opening and saving Word files directly to the network share (Air Disk). Save them locally and then copy them to the network share.
