Wont recognize jpgs from a Maciva-miniCD Camera (Sony)

Every time try to import jpg photos off a miniCD from a Mavica-CD300 camera, I get error messages that tells me "<this file> could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)". Is there anything I can do to get these files on my mac? They worked fine on a PC. I have several thousand photos, and I would rather not have to use a PC and save each one as a Photoshop jpgto be able to see them on a mac. Any suggestions?

Hi Seth,
Here is a snippet I found on the web
Problem solved iPhoto wouldn't recognize Sony MVC CD30
Although I had searched Apple's Support site, I decided to give it one more shot and I stumbled across a new page entitled "iPhoto: Troubleshooting Camera Connections."
Even though Sony Mavica digital cameras are listed as compatible with iPhoto, the camera has to be set to Picture-Transfer-Protocol (PTP) before you can download. In addition, you will need to open Image Capture in the Applications folder. As soon as these steps were taken, the camera was recognized by iPhoto and all photos downloaded into Image Capture.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
Once you download the photos from the camera into your Pictures folder with Image Capture, put them in a labeled folder and import that folder into iPhoto.

  • Acrobat X will not convert JPG from a cell phone camera to pdf.

One our PMs took some photos with his camera phone and Acrobat doesn't do anything when you try to convert the jpg to pdf.  If we try to combine in Acrobat, the process starts, the Combine box opens and shows the files, but when you click on combine files Adobe pops a message saying that Adobe has stopped working and closes the program, searches the Internet for a solution, and finds, NOTHING.  Which incedentally is what the seach finds in this forum, NOTHING, even if you search for Adobe.
So I call customer service, and for the first time in years, I'm told that the maintenance we purchased only covers installation.  Seriously?  I am now convinced, as is my corporate IT department, that Adobe is overpriced and under serviced.  Not to mention the push to eliminate the individual products and force us to purchase expensive suites.  Really?!  Did you already forget about Microsoft's legal woes for bundling software?
I will never again purchase nor recommend Adobe products.
If someone else is having this problem, good luck.

Hi David, and thank for responding.  We have volume licenses for an enterprise version of Acrobat Pro X.  (See email below.)  It was for 2 years of maintenance and included upgrades.  As for the photos, we copied them from the camera to the desktop.  We can print them to Adobe and I can convert them to bmp and then convert them to pdf.  However, I cannot convert the jpg to pdf directly.  Adobe stops running and Windows closes the program.  I can successfully convert other jpg photos though.  This is the case on two different PCs.  We run Windows 7x64.  I don't know what is different with the jpg from the Samsung 350 Windows phones that causes this anomaly.  Any ideas would be welcomed.  Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro (late 2013) wont recognize HDMI from VCR

I bought a recent vcr with HDMI output hoping to capture family movies directly into the new macbook pro with hdmi input, however the vcr is not being recognized by the mac or imovie, help!

Did you figure out how to get the vcr HDMI output into your MacBook Pro?  I also have a vcr with HDMI output, and want to take that higher quality signal into the Mac.  Thanks.

  • IPhoto will not read JPGs from my DX3900 Camera!

I have an older Kodak DX3900 digital camera.  I've used it with older versions of iPhoto with no problem.  But today, using iPhoto 9.1.3, I got back from hiking only to be disappointed at the following error:
Huh?  When did iPhoto not recognize JPG?  I don't remember hearing about that.
What I wonder is if someone goofed and expects "jpg" instead of "JPG".
Anyone have info about this bug?
    Thanks!

Try using image capture (in your applications folder) to bring the photos to a desktop folder and try from there - also you can try preview to see how it does - from preview you can do a save as and try the newly created photo

  • How do i get itunes to recognize songs on my computer that came from a purchased CD?

How do i get iTunes to recognize songs on my computer that came from purchased Cd's?

You just import them to iTunes, or you import them to iTunes directly from the CD. But, it you had imported them to the computer before you had iTunes, then you go to edit, add file to library, or add folder to library, however you have the music set up.

I have been using Photoshop CS5 with no problems.  I just bought a Nikon D600 which is not supported by CS5.  I heard that Lightroom 4.2 will support it so I shelled out $199 for that product.  Now I see that if I import a raw file into LR, work on it and then try to send it to PS for more editing I can't do that.  I am told I have to spend another $199 to upgrade to CS6 because Adobe has no plans to have CS5 support my camera.  This is a rip-off.
    Uh...no...you are wrong.
CS5 can open D600 files if you convert the D600 files using the free DNG Converter 7.3 RC which is available at labs.adobe.com (note DNG Converter 7.2, ACR 7.2 and LR 4.2 offer preliminary support). LR 4.3 and ACR 7.3 RC (both are release candidates hence the RC category) can deal with D600 raw files directly. If you process the D600 file in LR 4.3 RC, you can open that image in CS5 if you render the image in Lightroom 4.3 RC.
Yes, Adobe will no longer update CS5.x because Adobe started shipping CS6. It's Adobe's policy to cease support for versions of Photoshop that is no longer shipping–Adobe is now shipping CS6. It ain't a rip-off, it's the standard Adobe policy to support CURRENT customers, not former customers.
You really need to catch up bud...software and new cameras change all the time. Buying a new cameras generally means you'll need to update your software. Foolish you for not knowing that. All of this could be mitigated if Nikon and Canon (and the other main camera brands) adopted some sort of raw file format standards...sadly, they don't which allows people who fail to grasp the reality of the situation to blame Adobe.

Yeah depends on the source but generally MPG hasn't ever been supported in Final Cut Pro- as Tom says you want to convert it to ProRes elsewhere before bringing into FCP X.

  • IPad wont show .jpg images correctly

My new iPad wont show .jpg images correctly. They all get a yellow/blue filter almost like a negative photo. This is in Safari, Maps,Youtube and every App using .jpg images. Gifs, and png, viewing video etc is fine. Also the home screen background/wallpaper gets this problem.
BUT saved .jpgs from Safari strangely enough look fine in Photos. (Thumbnails stil look bad though.)
I thought it had to be a software issue, but reseting my device with newest OS (3.2) is not helping.
Any others with the same problem?

Thanks for your reply. I have not created any JPGs, or transfered them to the iPad. I just surf with Safari and all .jpg's are getting this strange colors. When starting Maps the satellite mode gets wrong colors. The background on the home screen are the ones that came with the iPad. Strange thing is that when restoring it with software reset, the background is ok. When choosing a new (even choosing the same one) they get wrong colors when going to the home screen. (They all look good when choosing)
It looks like the iPad is not doing the final steps on rendering the images. (And also have a short blink when being displayed) However as I said, all images look good when viewing fullscreen in the Photos App. Even the ones saved from Safari which looked bad in Safari.

  • Iphoto wont recognize memory card to load pictures

all of a sudden iphoto wont recognize the memory card to import pictures. when you put card in reader iphoto launches but you dont see the card on the left hand side and it doesnt ask you to import the pictures. If you remove the card you get device removal error - then card appears on left and import button shows up but nothing happens when you push the button??
If you go to Finder the card is there and i can "select all" and drag them to iphoto. This is really strange - please help?

If your card shows up in the Finder then you can still import from inside iPhoto. Do File > Import to Library, then navigate to the camera card. You can preview the photos, select the ones you want to import, and import them to iPhoto. This is actually my preferred method, since it allows me to choose exactly which photos I want to upload from my camera.
Don't remove the card reader from the USB port until you have ejected it properly. You can do that from in the Finder. Click on the little triangle eject symbol next to the name of the card (below your HD icon). When the card disappears from the list it is properly ejected and you may safely disconnect the card reader.
I don't know why the card suddenly stopped appearing in the iPhoto Source List. One thing you can try is to use your camera to do a low-level format of the card. This has been known to improve a card's performance. The second thing you can try is to delete iPhoto's preference file. Close iPhoto. Use the Finder to navigate to Macintosh HD/ Users/ (your user name)/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.iPhoto.plist, then move that file to the trash. You'll have to reset iPhoto's preferences back to your liking after you launch it.

  • Pc wont recognize when i plug in iphone 5s

I am trying to put pics back on iphone from pc but when i plug in Iphone to PC, it wont recognize it. Thanks

The only way to put photos back on to the iPhone from the PC is through the iTunes sync process. You connect the device to the computer, open iTunes, select the iPhone in the device pane, then go to the Photos tab, select the photos you want to sync and then perform the sync.  If you are trying to put them back by going to the camera roll in Explorer, that will not work. You cannot write back to the camera roll on the iPhone. Explorer will only recognize the phone and allow you to look at it when there are photos in the camera roll.

  • Wont recognize GL2

Ok so my imac broke and I got a new one and ever since then, I cannot upload from my GL2 into FCE. I use the DV NTSC Firewire basic like usual and still wont even let me capture anything. This is getting very frustrating and I have even tried capturing from my mom's sony dv camera and it wont recognize that either. I have tried that camera on multipe capture settings with no success. Someone help me please!!!

    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Final Cut wont recognize when i push esc when capturing now on an uncontrolled device.
    help.

I have captured from a VHS player thru a camcorder to FCP, but never experienced a Capture Now not stopping after pressing the ESC key. I did a quick search and found a question similar to yours. The following suggestions are mostly from a response posted by Tony Gay:
    1. Trash the FCP preferences. Try Preference Manager for doing that if you don't already have it.
    2. Run Disk Utility and select Repair Disk Permissions
    3. Check your System Prefs, make sure that your Energy Saver settings are so that the system stays awake and disks do not power down.
    4. The FCP preferences will need to be reset. If using Capture Now, check that it is not limited, reset your drives and etc.
    5. Check that the codec of the camera/tape match the setting that you are capturing with.
    6. Try capturing a short piece using Log and Capture...
    7. Try Capture Now.
The person with the problem posted back reporting that after doing the above, ESC was again working with Capture Now.
    Good luck.
