Wont start - HD makes noise and the screen stays black

Hi there
This just happened today. Well yesterday while I was browsing suddenly for no reason my screenn went black and no amount of pressing of keys clicking etc could make it come alive again. So I powered down and restarted. It worked OK.
Then today same thing, except when I tried to restart the HD started making loud 'wirring' noises and the screeen stayed black. I've been trying on and off to get it to start but no luck. Is there anything that I can do????
The iBook hasnt been dropped or mishandled in anyway, and nothing has been spilt on it either.

Try resetting the power manager:

If that doesn't work, try resetting the PRAM:

And if that doesn't work, it may be your power manager has gone bad. Hopefully your machine is still under warranty. If it isn't, an authorized service technician can still remove the hard drive and put it inside an external 2.5" Firewire case such as those made by http://www.macsales.com/ so that at least you can recover any files you haven't backed up.

Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 10 - 15 Seconds...
Turn the Phone On...

However, from your discription, I suspect that something is broken. Maybe a dead battery. In that case. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and see what they say.

I have already reset my ATV3 to factory defaults twice and connected it directly to the router, but the problem remains the same... BTW, I connected it to the two routers of two different networks I have at home... It reacts the same to both nw....

Claire, please post your machine specs as requested. There are some variants of the MBP with specific hardware issues. Example: the older "silver key" MBPs with 2.2Ghz and faster processors can have a defective video chipset that produces a black screen or distorted video. That problem is covered under an Apple program that will fix this at no cost to you if you computer is that model.
Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That launches System Profiler for you. The first screen looks like this:
The second line, "Model Identifier" (or "Machine Model" if you are running OS10.4) precisely identifies your MBP variant. Post that, and include it in your equipment info in your profile for future posts. That means people don't have to ask, and you get faster help that is targeted to your specific model. A pretty common thing for computers that have been shipped is a RAM chip becoming dislodged just enough to cause what you are describing. Try re-seating your RAM chips. You have a hardware problem and you should take it into a apple store to be looked at and fixed.

Try a safe boot.
     Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
     is being checked.

Are you hearing beeps?
What was the spec of the RAM?
What was the brand of RAM?
Have you double checked that the RAM is properly seated?
