Word 2001 for MAC won't save files

Suddenly, for no reason apparently, I cannot save Word 2001 files. It dings, but nothing comes up. I've tried saving and saving as...nothing works. This happened overnight. I've tried it on both Power book G-3 and networked G-s Power Mac. Neither one will save the files.
What do I do?

really sorry for asking the obvious,
have you also tried Save As ... I know you will have, but I've got to ask.
and, is it a Word document that you are trying to save, rather than a template or another type of document that word has opened for you ?
Do you open documents "read-only" ?, this is unlikely if it's happened overnight and affected two Macs, but have to ask.
Where do the original documents come from ? Are they on an internal hard disk ? or a disk image (on the internal hard disk), or the internet ? Are the documents "protected" - an option in Word to require a password to make changes to a document.
Can you create and save new documents ?
were there any other changes to the Macs that might have caused this to happen ? anything at all ? any other software installed ? or memory installed ? (I had untold issues with Word v5 menus after upping the RAM to 1.25GB - this automatically turns off VM in OS9, Word 5 didn't like that at all, for some reason it needed VM on).

  • InDesign CC for Mac won't save file

I've been using InDesign CC and working on a document for over a month. Been saving it in Creative Cloud. Have had no problem opening it, making changes and then saving it. Today I opened, made changes and the file will not save. I've tried saving it down and opening in Indesign 6 and it still won't save. I also cleared InDesign preferences and reinstalled InDesign. Still won't save when I open it up. The strange part is I'm able to open on another computer through Creative Cloud and am able to work on it and save back to Creative Cloud. No matter what I do I can't open and then save on the original computer.

Finally discovered the problem. It was a PDF of an ad I received from an agency. Once I took it out of the document I was able to save as usual. Thanks for your help!

  • Word 2011 for Mac Did Not Save My Work despite many save presses. Why?

I have been working on a document all week on word 2011 for Mac.
I initially saved the document and named it. It is still there in the directory folder I originally created it in.
I pressed the save icon every 20 minutes when working on my word document, saved it before bed, saved it when I woke up etc. Hundreds of save presses in over 100 hours of work in the past 10 days.
I also had auto recovery saving enabled to save every 10 minutes, this is still enabled.
Additionally I have time machine set up where it had been backing my whole drive after every few hours to a time capsule. I thought I had my backup protocols covered!
Today while editing and moving a text box within the word document, the whole word doc crashed  with an error message saying “that it had encountered a problem and needed to close”.
I was expecting a recovered document to open back up as has occurred many times in the past when Word automatically reboots after a crash. However when the recovered document opened every piece of work had vanished except for the title page and a few words.
I thought no sweat I will go back and get a time machine copy as I had a weeks worth of back ups.
Upon going back to every back up from the last week, all my back up copy versions of the document in time machine is just the title page as well, even though I had been saving this all week and the documents was 50 pages long.
It appears that despite me hitting save, the document has not saved any of my work all week except for the first time I created the file; is this possible?
I cannot find a copy of the document in the Microsoft auto recovery, it does not reappear in it original form when I reopen Word.
I cannot find another copy in trash or on time capsule/time machine in the completed format that I had been saving it in.
I can find the file with the original file name, where I originally saved it but all the work has vanished even though the crash occurred when I was simply moving a text box to sit under a table. (IE I did not delete everything and then press save.
Things I noticed into the lead up the crash:
I tried to email to another email account last night as an attachment from word as a third back up and it would not send as an attachment, where this is usually an easy way to send a document as a safety back up.
I tried to “save as” and give it another name before the crash to experiment with different formatting and called it test test test test but it did not show up in the folder when I hit the “save as” button. Any subsequent search with SPOTLIGHT does not show any file by this name test test test test, even though I am 120% positive that I did save the file correctly in two different places on my computer. Hence again the file would not save even though I did all the normal steps of saving.
Why was the file not saving when I have been pushing the SAVE button? Was the file corrupted?
What has gone wrong and does anyone know where to look for the missing work? I have exhausted every option I know over the last few hours. Thanks for considering!

  • DW CS3 for Mac won't save or upload

I've been using Dreamweaver CS3 for Mac lately, and have been
able to upload quite a few pages already. Today, however, I was
uploading a vital page but would constantly get the following
    message:
"An FTP error occurred - cannot get remote folder

    try the operation again."
Is it because last night I happened to turn on my Firewall
and turn off my Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing?
However, I've since turned off the Firewall again, and turned on
Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing. Dreamweaver still
    gives the same message above.
Do I have to reboot? Problem is, I can't save the html file I
just did, and it was a heck of a job. Don't tell me I have to do it
    all over again?
Or is it because I deleted quite a few duplicate files from
my local site through my Finder? But I've been doing that before,
one file at a time, and this never happened.

    Most likely, yes.

Copy the code from DW and paste it into Notepad. Save it.

  • Word 2008 for Mac and NFS mounted home directories "Save File" issues

    Greetings everyone,
(Long time lurker, first time poster here)
I admin a small network (under 20 workstaitons) with a centralized NFS server, with user home directories mounted via NFS upon login.  Users are authenticated via LDAP.  This is all working fine, there is no problem here.  The problem lies when my users use Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac.  When they attempt to save a file to thier Desktop (or Documents or any folder under thier home dir) they are met with the following message:
    (dialog box popup)
"Word cannot save or create this file.  The disk maybe be full or write-protected.  Try one or more of the following: * Free more memory. * Make sure the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected or damaged. (document-name.ext)"
This happens regardless of file format (Doc, Docx, Txt) and regardless of saved location under the network mounted dir.  I've noticed that when saving Word creates a .tmp file in the target directory, which only further confuses me to the underlying cause of the issue.
When users logon to a local machine account and attempt the save, there is no issue.
I have found many posts in other commuity forums, including this one, indicating that the issue is a .TempoaryItems folder in the root of the mounted directory.  This folder already exists and is populated with entries such as "folder.2112" (where 2112 is the uid of the LDAP user).  I find other posts indicating that this is an issue with Word:2008 and OSX10.8, with finger pointing in either direction, but no real solution.
I have installed all Office for Mac updates from Microsoft (latest version 12.3.6).
I have verified permissions of the user's home dir.
I have also ensured that this issue effects ONLY Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac apps, LibreOffice and other applications have no issue.
Does *ANYONE* have a solution or workaround for this issue?  While we're trying to phase Microsoft products out, getting users to ditch Word and Excel is difficult without removing them from systems completely.  So any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    ~k

I can't tell you how to fix bugs in an obsolete version of Office, but a possible workaround is to use mobile home directories under OS X Server. The home directories are hosted locally and synced with the server.

  • Firefox for Mac preferences shows .qif file format for quicken as "quicktime image format"-wrong application and won't let me select anything else

    Post to Firefox forum; Oct.2011
Re: Quicken 2007; Mac OS 10.5
Problem: can’t import or download Qif format files into quicken from bofa or Chase. Mac can’t recognize; how do I set preferences in Firefox (or Safari).
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/new?product=desktop&category=d1&search=Firefox+for+Mac+preferences+shows+.qif+file+format+for+quicken+as+%22quicktime+image+format%22-wrong+application+and+won%27t+let+me+select+anything+else&showform=1
    Hello,
I previously used Firefox on my old Mac G4 with OS 10.3.9; the above issue existed with that system and Firefox 2.00.2 (or similar). I then "tried" to move to a G5 Mac with OS 10.5, hoping that an updated Mac Operating system and updating Firefox would solve that problem.
I'm now working on my son's MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8, 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2gb Memory; 2 gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
I still have a problem in Firefox Preferences trying to download .qif files. BofA Mortgage accounts only allow downloading of .qif files. My .qfx download works fine, but the error message is as follows:
The error message is that this is a corrupted file or one that Preview doesn't recognize.
and it is still a problem when trying to download Quicken .qif format files for our B of A mortgage.
The preferences for Firefox under File Helpers won't let me name the extension I want; instead, it CONFUSES .qif (Quicken Interchange Format) with .qtif (Quicktime Image Format) for Mac.
Therefore, when I download .qif files and try to import them to Quicken, I get a message that this is a corrupted file:
    thanks for any help.
    Val in Seattle

Well, in the end, I just gave up and deleted the photos, in the hope that it was something to do with them. Took some more photos and they seem to have imported without any problems at all.
Given that the same irksome photos loaded on the wife's macbook without so much as a murmur, how weird is that?
Still- all's well that ends well. Thanks for the suggestions- much appreciated.

  • I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.

I have used Image Capture to scan images/documents and then saved them as either PDFs or PNG files.  For some reason, just this past week, Image Capture will no longer save the file.  It scans, and the Scan Results window pops up, but it won't save file.
The file name has no special character in it, just letters and no spaces.
I have done this in the past and it has worked, but now it will not.
I have not upgraded any software, that I am aware of.
After scanning, the Image Capture pops up the Scan Results with the file name in the window, but neither the Scan Results nor the Image Capture window responds to inputs.  The Image Capture window is frozen, with only the "Overview" and "Cancel" buttons active (but non-responsive).
Is this a software issue or a scanner hardware issue?  I am using a HP Photosmart C6200 series printer/scanner on a network using a Time Capsule airport.
    Thanks.

    I had the same problem.
Got a 90% fix.  Apparently the Mavericks preferences won't work with Yosemite, so I just deleted the Image Capture preferences.
Unfortunately, the "Scan to" folder seems to be permanently set to the Pictures folder.
    1.  Quit Image Capture
    2.  Go to Finder > Go > Home, which opens up your home folder (named after your user name)
    3.  Open Library > Preferences > com.apple.ImageCapture.plist - Drag this file to the Trash
    4.  Start "Image Capture", click "Details" and change all your settings as you prefer
    5.  Quit and restart "Image Capture".   Notice it remembers all your settings except "Scan to" folder.  It insists on saving to "Pictures".
That's as far as I was successful.  I tried changing the "Scan to" folder to "Desktop", but on launch, Image Capture always sets it back to "Pictures".
    This is what I tried:
    6.  Download and install "Pref Setter" from http://www.nightproductions.net/prefsetter.html
    7.  Quit "Image Capture".  Right-click on "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist" and open with Pref Setter.
    8.  Search for "Pictures", which finds "~/Pictures" (the tilde character at the start means your home directory).
    9.  Double-click on "~/Pictures" and change it to the folder you prefer.  I like "~/Desktop"
    10. Choose File > Save then Quit from Pref Setter.  Note that re-opening the plist file still shows "~/Desktop"
    11. Start up "Image Capture" -- on startup, "Image Capture" sets "Scan to" folder to "Pictures"
    I consider this a bug.

  • Word 2011 for Mac Issue with Custom Page Size

I have installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac on my brand new iMac.  I'm using Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac and I have opened the "Word Publishing Layout" template (this is essentially Microsoft Publisher).  I'm trying to set up custom page sizes by performing the following steps.  I go to File --> Page Setup and use the following settings:
    1. Settings: Page Attributes
    2. Format For: Any Printer
    3. Paper Size:  I choose "Manage Custom Sizes"
    4. I create a 24x36 page and save it
When I do this, Word 2011 (and Word 2008) for Mac will only go to a maximum of 22 inches wide and 22 inches in height.  Is there any way around this?  I need the big sizes to do digital proofs for my business.  I don't want to scale down to 12x18 (essentially cutting the proof by 50%) because when I import it into my other program that can accommodate any size document, I have to do a lot of manual work to get things back to scale.  Thanks in advance for your help.  If we can figure this out, I'll be grateful.

i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

  • Numbers 3.0 won't save files!

Numbers 3.0 suddenly won't save files on my Macbook Pro.
I opened a .csv file, made some changes in Numbers, and tried to Save to my desktop.  I get a window that says "The file '[filename].numbers' couldn't be opened".
I tried to Export to a .xls file, and also Share>Send a Copy>Email and chose Excel as the option.  Same message about not being able to open the file.
This makes Numbers totally unusable for me.  And for some reason, the old version of Numbers is suddly gone, so no fallback there anymore.
    Any tips?

And for some reason, the old version of Numbers is suddly gone, so no fallback there anymore.
    Hi Oslo,
Numbers 3 exports to Excel fine on my machine, though it uses the extension .xlsx not .xls.
    Same with Share>Send a Copy>Email. Works fine.
So maybe you should try closing Numbers 3 and reopening it, or restarting your Mac.
Your old version of Numbers should still be on your Mac, in a subfolder within Applications named iWork '09 or similar.

Sorry for the goofed answer. Most people are looking to set the margins and I looked over that you were interested in the tabs.
To save tabs in fixed positions that will appear with every new document, you must modify the default template. You can't open the template from the desktop. If you do, it will open as a standard document. You must open it from the Open dialogue box from within Word. With Word in the foreground, press Command+O and navigate to:
    /Users/your_account/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/
    Open the file Normal.dotm
Set your tabs and save the file. Close the template. All new documents will now open with those preset tabs.

  • Compatibility - MS Word 2008 for Mac and PC MS Word

I teach online classes, and many of my students have switched to using Word 2007. My Word 2004 couldn't open the .docx files, so I recently upgraded to MS Word 2008 for Mac.
Now, I can open and read all .docx files. But I can't open all the documents my students are submitting. Sometimes I will click on the document icon, and I will get a message that calls it a "binary file." I will be allowed to save it disk, but that doesn't work.
What's a "binary file"? Why is that happening? How can I get around it?
(By the way, it's not a solution to ask students to "save as" a particular type of document. A few will understand and comply, but most haven't a clue/don't care/can't be bothered/whatever.)

some tips pulled up by Google "Word 2008 .docx files"
*Word 2008 12.1 can not open files created by Word 2007 (or maybe any old Word program?) by double-clicking them in the Finder.*
Prior to installing the 12.1 Service Pack, I was able to double-click on any .doc/.docx file generated by Office 2007/SP1 -- and it would open in Word 2008 12.0.1. After installing the 12.1 Service Pack, I can only double-click-open files I've created on my Mac (with any version of Word.)
Any version of WinWord files? They can be opened via the "File --> Open" menu command -- but double-clicking on them will not open the document. I can "save as" the files I have to open with the menu and those will open -- but not the original.

Daniel Bell - .docx documents are really just zip containers. If you receive one that is a folder just re-zip it and change the .zip extension to .docx Provided the folder structure hasn't been tampered with it should then open OK.

Reason that I ask is that I'm worried that I will not be able to read or work word or excel docs that people send me.

No. Office 2011 for Mac is coded to run with OS X. In order to work on the iPad the app must be coded for iOS instead.
If you look in the iTunes App Store, you will find that there are many apps that allow you to work with Office files on an iPad.
