Word 2003 Import - TOC Issue

I have a problem when importing docs into RoboHelp HTML X5.02
from Word 2003.
The TOC generates with the correct structure based on the TOC
from my document, but the generated Topics are not linked to the
TOC books/pages that have been created.
I am having to use the Topic > Properties > Find Topic
dialogue and paste the topic title into the Topic Search field to
manually find and match all the TOC Topics.
The problem seems to have started when I began importing docs
in languages other than English. Now it applies to English as well.
I have found that I can intermittently import docs
successfully if the doc content is all set to US English language,
and the doc is imported from the RoboHelp starter, rather than from
RoboHTML. Even so this doesn't seem to function consistently.
Does anyone have any ideas? I am generating large Projects in
4 languages, and matching all the Topics manually is becoming a
serious issue.

I forgot to mention the last column has some trailing spaces in the first row.

  • Character Direction override in Word 2003 imports

I've searched for Character Direction and seen mainly mentions of ME and foreign language conversions right to left and left to right. We do not use ME or any foreign language features. The behavior I'm troubleshooting for InDesign CS5 7.0.3 importing Word 2003 docs on a Windows XP macine, is as follows:
I have hundreds of Word 2003 documents, used in a production environment where editors update text daily or weekly, the production dept. imports into newsletters in InDesign. We go from import to finished product at the printer sometimes as quickly as 15 minutes.
In CS4, all of these documents import into my publications without overrides, using Microsoft Word Import options set for Customize Style Import, and style mapping used to map Word paragraph styles to ID paragraph styles
After the CS5 conversion, every one of my Word 2003 documents for all of my publications come in with overrides showing hyphenation settings and character direction that did not appear with CS4. This is despite my mapping styles, and the fact that these options can't even be (as far as I can tell) a paragraph or character override inside Word.
I went back to CS4 to make sure there were no changes in the Word docs. They worked perfectly, no overrides.
Inside Word 2003, I had to go to Tools > Language > Hyphenation and make the hyphenation setting in the Word doc match exactly the hyphenation settings for the paragraph style it was being mapped to in InDesign to make it go away at import.
Now I am left only with the character direction Left To Right override, which I can't figure out how to fix.
I can't find a way to set this in Word, and I can't find a way (since I don't have ME) to change it in InDesign. It is not practical for me to run a script for every import or continue to reset the overrides manually, because we simply don't have to the time, our deadlines are too tight and frequent. Plus, if we miss one, there are definite consequences, because the data is exported in a variety of formats for reuse automatically via scripts, and the override is messing up my exports.
I was hoping I'd see a post that says, "Ah yes, the Word filters in CS5 were updated, and now we look for hyphenation and character direction, and here's what you can do as a workaround" but I'm not seeing anything. If I can't define left to right in the regular version of ID or in Word 2003, does anyone have an idea how I can get my import to ignore it again?

I hate it when I know too much about MS Word.
I don't have Word accessible right now, but you can set character direction in (the Windows version of) Word. I don't remember the exact details off-hand. Character direction is not the only overrides I've seen make its way in. I've seen some CJK features get imported as overrides as well (by users not using CJK languages).
It actually depends on your OS and your version of Word, I think. In Word 2007 on Windows 7, you need to have a RTL keyboard installed in order to expose the right-to-left-paragraph and left-to-right-paragraph buttons on the ribbon. I think that Asian scripts are on in all installs of Word 2007, but since our OS has some Asian keyobards turned on by default by Group Policy, I'm unsure of this. In Word 2003 on Windows XP, you need the, oh heck I can't visualise the menu, something like "Enable complex script support for right-to-left languages" in the Region and Language tab in Control Panel.
For all recent versions of Word, you can check the Fonts window (control-D) to see if you have one, two, or three scripts enabled.
    Font = Latin-script
    Asian text font = CJK
    Complex scripts = Thai/Lao/etc. and Arabic/Farsi/etc.
Finally: It's possible to have a RTL paragraph in a Word document on the machine of someone who does not have the Complex Scripts dropdown in the Font menu in Word. Likewise, it's possible to have paragraph styles in Word with CJK information on a machine that does not have CJK support turned on in Word (I have seen this numerous times in the Win XP/Office 2003 era).
So, in terms of the original post - I haven't yet figured out if this is a new feature of CS5, or something about one's install of Word or Windows, but there are so many variables that the only obvious solution to me is "a workflow in which overrides are always cleared." You don't like that solution, I understand, but any other solution would require some extended troubleshooting of the entire workflow, including all installs of Word that might contribute a Word doc to be placed in ID.

  • Microsoft Access 2003 - Import xls issue

I'm having an issue with oracle SQL developer which exports an xls file then I proceed to import that xls in Microsoft Access 2003. I got a following error message related to the headings.
"The first row contains some data that can't be used for valid Access field names. In these cases, the wizard will automatically assign field names."
If I proceed with this issue in Access, it'll bring up an error message about importing the xls in Access.
I have a solution by removing the trailing column via Excel application then import the xls. I wonder any one have any better wayaround this issue?
I have the latest version and it has 2 patches.
    Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention the last column has some trailing spaces in the first row.

  • RoboHELP 6 Crashes When Importing Word 2003 File

Discovered this today by accident (after modifying a Word
2003 file that I was previously able to import to "test" Help files
using both RH HTML and RH for Word (both V6) and thought I'd report
it because it appears to be a bug:
If you select the following option in the Word file that you
are importing, RoboHelp will crash during the import:
Tools, Options, General tab, Web Options, Files tab,
Organize supporting files in a folder
When you do the Import Word file action from RoboHelp, it
starts the import then issues a Microsoft C++ Debug Library message
    box that says:
    Debug Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\RoboHelp
    6.0\RoboHTML\RoboHTML.exe
    abnormal program termination
(Press Retry to debug the application)
    Abort Retry Ignore
Doesn't matter what you select. RoboHELP crashes and the Word
    file is not imported.
Wanted to report this here in case someone else runs into
this. It cost me a lot of time today.

    Hi Peter
Thank you for the suggestion. I created a new project, new
folders, imported the files a few at a time & compiled it each
time (with one build tag in it) and found that only two files made
it crash. On the one file, I removed the tables (which had no
merged cells) from the project and it worked. The other file was
removed completly and I will re-do that page.
I then opened my current project (with all links &
pictures etc TOC working) and imported the changed file and removed
the other file and wala....I have a useable project.
The project was on our own software so unfortunately I would
not be able to share it.
Being a relativley new (1.5 yrs) user, I find running into
bugs are brutal....Thanks for all your help.

  • Importing Word 2003 docs into RH7 HTML

I imported Word 2003 docs into RH7 for HTML and they looked
fine in the WYSIWYG window. However, when I preview the topics in
the Browser, I get HTML code for a dash, quotes and other
characters. It is an incredibly tedious process to try to search
and replace the HTML code in each document. Is this typical of Word
or Word 2003 docs that are imported into HTML, or is this a RH bug?
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to resolve the issue?
    Thanks

Be sure you've downloaded all three RH7 patches (7.0.1,
    7.0.2, 7.0.3).
I think 0.2 is the one that fixed these symbols, but install
    each of them, in order.
    Good luck,

  • Importing Word 2003 Docs into RH7 project

We currently have RH7 (7.02.001) and use Word 2003. However, we have some groups that are using Window 7. When we try to import a Windows 7 document (.docx) there is no option on the import screen to select a .docx file. Do we need to upgrade to RH8? Is there a workaround in RH (other than saving the .docx as .doc)?

    Hi,
In 7.0.3, you can import .doc and .docx. File | Import | Word document.

  • Issues with 'Rounding' function (Word 2007 issue? Works in Word 2003...)

My colleague (using Word 2003) and I (using Word 2007) are working on a change to a template where we include a formula that has the function called rounding.
She (2003) is able to preview the pdf but I (2007) am getting error message: : oracle.xdo.parser.v2.XPathException: Extension function error: Method not found 'round'
All other settings that we have appear to be the same (same config file, same java version, etc)
Does anyone know if there are some changes to Word 2007 that are causing this? And, any ideas on how to resolve?
    Thanks for the help!
    Background:
-The function is designed provide a total weight value: each individual weight value, multiply by a factor of .80, round up, and then added together to get a total amount.
-Because we also show the individual weight values on the output, (also multiplied by the factor of .80 and then rounded up), we need the factor and rounding to happen before the sum).
The entire set of functions for the total weight value is:
    <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum',0)?>
    <?for-each:LIST_G_CONTAINER_NAME1?><?for-each:G_CONTAINER_NAME1?>
    <?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum', xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum')+ xdoxslt:round((GROSS_WT*0.8),2))?><?end for-each?><?end for-each?>
    <?format-number: xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX,'sum');'9G990D00'?>
    space
    <?WEIGHT_UOM_CODE?>
Error when attempting to preview the pdf after uploading an xml file:
: oracle.xdo.parser.v2.XPathException: Extension function error: Method not found 'round

    Hi,
I took my original file (didn't have the round functionality) and Word 2007 and did the following:
    1) Tested with xml to ensure that there are no other issues - was able to preview successfully
    2) Added the function you suggested: <?xdoxslt:round(1000.98978,2)?> and saved the change
    3) Tried to preview using the same xml and got the same error message about rounding
I can't test on 2003 because my colleague is not working right now (she is the one with that version installed). I will try on 2003 later today (but I am guessing it will work for her because the other rounding function works for her).
Thanks for any other ideas about this.

  • Word 2003 will not import a .PSD file

    Using PSE5
To my surprise, Office/Word 2003 will not import a .PSD file created by PSE5. I am talking about a simple, Insert, Picture, From File... into an existing document.
Is there a way to make .PSD files compatible with Word? If not, what is the best file format to save in from PSE5 to use with Office?
Additionally, does anyone have a URL that explains the pros/cons of the various file formats (like where they are best used, etc.)?
    Thanks!
    Bob

I would be surprised if MS Word could handle proprietary formats like PSD. As Ken says, convert to JPEG's. That works fine. I have written many travelogues in Word with JPEG images.

  • Any Issues Upgrading from Word 2003 to 2007?

Hello. We have the option in my department to upgrade from
Word 2003 to Word 2007. My team still has some help projects in
RoboHelp for Word. Before we decide to upgrade, I was wondering if
anyone else using RoboHelp 7 (for Word) has upgraded to Microsoft
Word 2007, and if they have encountered any issues. Thanks for any
    input.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback, everyone. Here's an
update, just fyi. I loaded Office 2007 today, and seem to be
encountering one of the issues described by David Hurlston. When I
try to create a new popup, it takes a little over one minute for
the Insert Popup window to appear. Then when I select the topic to
which I want to link and click OK, it takes another 10 seconds or
so for the link to appear.
I also received the "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a
problem and needs to close" error five times in the past hour, when
just trying to add new topics. I ran Microsoft Office Diagnostics,
and it was unable to diagnose the cause of the crash. I'm using
RoboHelp for Word 7.0, Build 7.02.001. (I have the full Adobe
Technical Communication Suite with all of the latest updates
installed, and just loaded Office 2007 today, along with all of the
    latest Windows and Office updates.)
This is the perfect time for our team to upgrade to Office
2007 since we're at the very beginning of a release, so I'm going
to continue testing to see if I can figure out why it's a bit
sluggish and why it's crashing. I just wanted to follow up on my
original post in case any of this info is helpful.
On a semi-related note... I'm usually pretty good about
finding my way around in new user interfaces, but it took me about
ten minutes to figure out how to access the Insert Popup window
(due to the new Word UI). If anyone knows of a handy reference
guide for people upgrading to RoboHelp for Word 2007, let me know.
I checked the LiveDocs for RoboHelp for Word, but the version I
found currently contains the old icons I'm used to. (I'm hoping to
find some type of quick reference that explains where to find
things that have moved and/or changed icons. I found a great
interactive tool on Microsoft's site, but it seems to be specific
to Word docs, without addressing the RoboHelp-specific options.)
Thanks again for all the input!

  • Page numbering/imbedded font issue ~ converting from Word 2003?

I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if this issue has been addressed 100 times already!
I am preparing a novel for publication through Createspace (Amazon). Their requirements include that the fonts all be imbedded, and that page numbering begins with '1' on the first page of the story. When I convert my properly numbered word 2003 file to pdf, it comes out looking great, but the page numbers begin with 5 on first page of the story. So I have 2 questions:
If the pages look okay in terms of font, does that mean that my fonts are correctly imbedded in the pdf?
    and
Is there a way for me to control the page numbering so it begins with 1 on the first story page?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm terribly sorry for the trouble. We are working to address the problem with page numbers in an upcoming release, but for now I recommend you try the conversion again using Adobe Acrobat desktop software. You could download a free 30 day trial if needed here:

  • Import bookmarks from word 2003 into PDF

    Hello guys,
my english is not the best but i will try my best :-)
    My enviroment:
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with XenApp 6, Office 2003 SP3 and Adobe Acrobat 9.
    My problem:
I installed Adobe Acrobat 9 without Adobe Tabs / PlugIns for Office.
One user write a document in Word 2003 with many bookmarks. He try to convert the document into a PDF. But after converting the bookmarks are not included in the PDF.
He try to convert the document over the PDF printer and in Acrobat over create -> pfd from file. Both ways are not working.
So now my question: Is there any way to convert a doc into a PDF without using the Adobe Tabs / PlugIn for Office?
    Thanks a lot.

    - Open Word 2003, you should see a "Adobe PDF" or "Acrobat" menu item.
    - Select the option to change preferences
    - Select the Bookmarks tab
    - Select the option to convert Word Bookmarks

  • Intro and Font Issue w/ Word 2003

Hey everyone, I'm new to the board here and looks like
there's quite a bit of good info here.
If this has been covered already somewhere, I'd like to check
    out the thread.
The machine I'm working with is set up with Windows 2000,
Office 2003 (with the Word 2003 fix), updated to RoboHelp X5.0.1.
I'm generating Win2000 help that just insists on using Times
New Roman font in the resulting help file no matter what I do.
Every font I change in the style in Word keeps on invading my help
file as Times. I've messed around with the templates to no avail.
I've copied the Robohelp.dot template into another directory
and changed it, and that did nothing. I've also changed Normal.dot
to see if that does anything, and am still coming up with Times New
    Roman in my help file.
"Automatically Update Styles" is not checked underneath the
document template file selection field, so my style changes appear
to be sticking with the Word document when I close and re-open it.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!
