Word 2003 inconsistent document recovery behaviour

I have a document that I have discovered (using the Open and Repair feature in word 2003) has an Internal Data Integrity (Type 4)  error (whatever that is).
On some machines (all running the same version of Word 2003, with SP3 and no other patches) the document opens from explorer fine, on others it causes Word to hang indefinitely at 100% CPU Usage.
I can however use Open and Repair on any of the machines ( those that hang or those that don't and this works fine) but what I want to know is this:
How come some machines can open it and auto repair it without any user intervention, when others that are exactly the same cant?
These PCs are all built from a standard image and Office is installed on them from an SCCM package... so they should all be identical.
Also, does anyone have any idea what "Internal Data Integrity (Type 4) 1 error" really means, or how I can go about looking at the data behind the document to pinpoint the source of that message?
Background info: The document is generated by a mail merge process run from a machine using office 2007 that is saving the generated docs as 2003 format.  The template is a .dot file that I believe was originally created in office 97.  I believe the
template is the cause of the Data Integrity error and I have recommended a new one be created.  This doesn't help to explain why Word 2003 hangs when opening the files on one machine and not other though.

Hi,
Microsoft Word automatically uses the Open and Repair feature if Word detects a problem with a document when you open it.
If you can identify the document is a damaged file, please refer to this link troubleshoot damaged word document:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826864
If not, please troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word 2003 refer to this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820919
Note: A good way to create a new template test if it helps.
For error message:" Microsoft Data Integrity (Type 4) 1", please read this article:

  • Word 2007 Corrupt Document Recovery

    Hi All,
I might be a little off topic in this category but am hoping you can help or point me in the right direction, i have a corrupt .doc document, basically it was a doc i resumed working on which was launched off a usb hdd, midway through the document i accidentally unplugged the hdd.
After plugging it back in i tried to relaunch the document in the hope of just starting from where i originally resumed, however the text has now converted into all sorts of code which cannot be translated into English, i tried all the other MS docs explaining how to launch and repair the document to no avail,
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? =(
    Thanks in advance.
    Ovi.

Did you use MS Word's "Open and Repair" function to open those corrupted .docx files? If files are really very crucial and severely corrupted, then you have to buy a third-party application. This is the only way to recover those files as there's
no freeware, as far as I think. I have also faced the similar situation of corruption in some of Word .docx files. I tried
Word Repair Toolbox software to repair my corrupt .docx files.

  • Word 2007 Document Recovery Pane Corrupt

We are using Word 2007 on a Windows 2003 terminal server.
When each one of our users opens word, the document recovery task pane opens with the same five documents. If you try to use the documents or delete them, it gives an error
    Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete file: Cannot read form the source file or disk.
How can I get these to not show up for everyone?

    Hi,
Thank you for using Word IT Pro Discussions
    forum.
The first time that Word is started after a crash, the "Document Recovery" task pane will appear on the left side of the screen.
If you do not want these files shown in the document recovery task pane, click Start, in the Search box, type regedit and press Enter to open registry editor.
    Locate the registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Resiliency
There will be a key called "document recovery". Delete everything in this key. Once everything in this key is deleted, the problem will go away.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Why is my spell checker not working in a document using Word 2003

I have a word document in Word 2003  .   I was altering it and noticed that from page 3 to 6 the spell checker does not work.
I transferred the pages into another another file still didn't work .  Just copied a paragraph still didn't work.  So I then started typing the rest of the document into another file and straight away it underlined my spelling mistakes in red.
So why not in these few pages of my document.
This is a paragraph from the pages below.  I altered some words deliberately to see if my Word 2003 would pick them up.  It didn't.
The landlord shall be entitiled to pursue the tenant for any reasonable costs incurred as a result of the tenant’s faulure to pay rent including but not limited to any charges for returned cheques or any reasonable costs incurred
in pursuing the tenant for payment of unpaid rent.
But when I put it in here it does pick them up.  So it is something I have done .

    Hi,
According to your description, this issue is more related to Word. The Word IT Pro Discussions forum is a better place for word questions, we will move it there for you.

  • Printing microsoft word 2003 document and pdf created from the document are different

I created a microsoft word 2003 document with jpg pictures and printed it on my HP Inkjet printer. I then created a pdf by saving as a pdf from the microsoft word 2003 document. The settings for images were 300 dpi and zip compression. The pdf file created was ~3 MB whereas the word document was ~250 KB. It looked fine on the screen but when I printed it the jpg pictures from the pdf were very dark and not very desirable. When I printed it on my HP Color laser 2600n printer I couldn't see the difference in the jpg pictures.
I am creating the pdf files to send to the online publisher lulu.com to print. I have used the settings to create the pdf they recommend from their website; however they aren't real clear in the information they give for the recommended settings.
My question is why would the print out be so awful using the HP Color Ink Jet printer since it is very good for printing pictures?

There are many reasons, but most revolve around the color space and coding for the colors. Acrobat uses 8 bit RGB.

  • Hyperlinks in a PDF document converted from Word 2003

I have a large document for our state's mathematics vocabulary. It has internal hyperlinks to help someone navigate the document. I created it in Word 2003 and converted it to PDF using the tool in the menu bar. When finished, the PDF document has some working hyperlinks near the beginning (about a third of them), but most of the links (in the last two-thirds) do not work. I have also tried doing the conversion from Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 (8.1.4), but I get the same results. Can someone help me solve this problem so the PDF document has all working links? Thanks.

Yes, you can create a script in Acrobat that loops through the links and adjusts the link's "rect" property to suit your needs. You'll want to consult the Acrobat JavaScript Reference, and look at the doc.getLinks method in particular: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.479.html
along with the Link object properties: http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/JS_API_AcroJS.88.802.html
Post again if you get stuck.
I don't know what control you have over this on the InDesign side of things. You may want to ask in one of the InDesign forums if you haven't already.

  • Missing text in list items when coverting an MS Word 2003 Document

When converting a document from MS Word (2003) to PDF, (using Acrobat 9 Pro.) text is missing from either an ordered or unordered list when the text is within a list item and spans across to a second page.
This symptom is present when using the following methods of creating a PDF.
    ·         In windows explorer, right click and convert to PDF
    ·         Using the Convert to PDF button in the MS Word 2003 tool bar
    ·         Using the Convert to PDF in the File Menu of MS Word 2003
The only workaround seems to be:
    ·         Click File
    ·         Click Print
    ·         Select PDF from the list
    ·         Print
I can't seem to find any updates or fixes either from MS or Adobe that addresses this issue. This issue is present on 5 computers, has anyone had this problem and found a solution o_0

With WORD 2003, set the printer to the Adobe PDF printer and then go back through the document to check for the layout and such. Then print (or use PDF Maker). The other option is to go into the WORD Options, way down in a list of compatibility settings, and turn off use printer metrics. I think either of these will solve your problem.

  • Word 2003 - Acrobat menus disappear for some (not all) documents

I have a user who is having a very bizarre issue with Word 2003 and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.  When he opens some Word documents, the PDF menus disappear.  They are immediately restored when he closes the document or creates a new document.  We've tried repairing and uninstalling/reinstalling to no avail.  He uses several custom templates, but they are applied at startup to all documents.  Any other troubleshooting ideas?  Could the fact that he's using Word 2003 instead of 2007 be causing the problem?
    Thanks

More information: I just checked the version of the file I had on my hard drive, and it's doing the same thing there. However, the other similar documents in the same folder on my hard drive are not behaving this way, so apparently it's not specifically
    a SharePoint issue.

  • PDFMaker for MS Word 2003 posts UnCheckout on UnSaved documents

    Hi
We are getting a very strange unexpected bahavior with the PDFMaker plug-in for MS Word.
    Use Case:
    1. A user opens a MS Word document hosted in SharePoint.
    2. Makes some changes to the document but does not hit the save button.
    3. User uses Toolbar Icon or uses Adobe PDF=>Convert to Adobe PDF menu option to convert the document to PDF
The plugin sucessfully converts the document to PDF with the latest changes in it. But, somehow fires an Undo Checkout onto the document and all the changes in the document are lost. (And as an observation, this behavior is not observed with PPT files)
If steps 1-3 are performed on a .doc file present in local system drive; the plug-in pops-up a message saying
"Acrobat PDFMaker needs to save the file before continuing.
Do you want PDFMaker to save the file and continue?"
    Now my question(s) is/are
    1. Why plug-in didn't display any message for the document when edited from SharePoint?
    2. Do we have any fix/updates to address the issue.
To help is diagnosis my environment details are
    1. Windows XP SP3
    2. MS Word 2003 SP3
    3. SharePoint 2007
    4. Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard
    5. Could not figure out the version of PDFMaker plug-in
    Ref: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/754639?tstart=0

    Hi Michael
    Thanks for your reply.
But, my question is why the PDFMaker plug-in does not display a "Save" message when the file is edited from SharePoint?

We have a Word 2003 document with Embedded Excel sheets in it.  When this document is saved and reopened, you cannot edit the excel tables, you just get the message "document corrupt, no longer available".
