WORD 2010 Crashes Opening Word 2007 files

WORD 2010 crashes when opening Word 2007 files. If you save the files in Office 2007 as an RTF file, then open in WORD 2010 and save as a DOCX it works fine. Why can't WORD open legacy documents (these are not big files ~13 pages).
I have tried opening in safe mode, same effect - the doc opens and appears in the WORD window, and then the pop-up appears before you can do anything telling you that WORD 2010 has crashed.

Try using Open and Repair on the problem docs.
In the Open dialog, select the file, then click the arrow beside Open and choose Open and Repair
If that doesnt help you may want to check  the How to troubleshoot damaged documents in Word 2007 and in Word 2010

  • Acrobat pdfmaker com addin for word 2010 crashes when processing large files

I am trying to use the pdfmaker com addin for word 2010 to create a PDF document. Whenever I try and create the document, the acrobat addin crashes word.
I attempted to perform this on both an x86 and x64 machine and it failed both times at around the approximately same point (during/immediately after determining the bookmarks).
The document is large (862 pages, 2425 bookmarks, 311 300dpi graphics, for a total file size of 49.2MiB)
I can generate the PDF by just printing, but the whole point of using the pdfmaker is so that we don't have to perform 2.5K of manual cross-links.

I recently ran into this with a bitmap in a 265 page document. I copied the bitmap to IrfanView and then back (I think that was the step -- I am already forgetting) and the copied it back. The problem went away. My student may look a bit more at the file -- I asked so I could give a more definitive comment here.
The result I had suggests that it is a problem in WORD or the bitmap that WORD was using. Why WORD can deal with it and not Acrobat, I am not sure. However, when printing to the Adobe PDF printer there was not a problem, just with PDF Maker.

  • When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.

When I save a Word 2010 doc as a pdf file, it opens up in Adobe Reader as a blank page, no text, no background etc.  I am logged on as the Administrator, running Windows 7, using Microsoft Home and Business 2010.

You were right, it was a Microsoft problem.
I got it...I am now able to save a Word 2010 document as a pdf file.  Here is what I did/found:
In Word, go to File, Options, Display and make sure that "Print drawing created in word" is CHECKED.
Mine was unchecked and when I checked it everything came back and is working as it did before.  The only thing I can think of is that a Microsoft Update may have changed this selection...I know I DID NOT make any changes in the options.
One other thing I noticed in my saved documents folders was that a lot of my files showed up as PDF's and would still not open until I selected one and told it to default to open as a word document and then they all changed back and I was able to open them in word again.
I hope this helps others out there.

  • Add-On to Open Office 2007 Files

An Apple salesman told me there is an add-on to open Office 2007 files in Office:Mac. Can someone point me to the download location for this? I'm a brand new Mac user so I'm still a little lost. Thanks!

The salesman was wrong. The converter is not yet available.

  • Opening Powerpoint 2007 file

I purchased iWork '08 a couple of weeks ago in order to open PowerPoint 2007 files on my computer at home. However when I download the PowerPoint file from the internet, it downloads as a folder (inside the folder is more folders labeled: _rels, docProps, ppt, with more folders inside them) instead of just a PowerPoint file. Keynote '08 wont open the folder.
Any ideas on different ways to download or save the file so that it will open?

Usually the Window menu allows you to adjust window placement in Microsoft Office products.
If not, connect an external display or projector and change the resolution to the maximum.
Save the document with the window residing on the main screen with the Dock.
That will force it to open on the main screen in the future.

    Hallo,
I had the same problem with Word and Excel, always crashing on finishing the program. I first uninstalled the "Send to Bluetooth" Add-In in Word (keeped it in Excel) and Word works fine, without crashing and restarting on finishing the program. Then
I - the first time since installing Office 2010 and bluetooth software - starts the Add-In function "Send to Bluetooth" in Excel, where the Bluetotth Add-In still was installed, and the assistent for "Send to Bluetooth" starts. I choose a bluetooth device
(my mobile phone), sends an opened Excel document to it, complets the assistents and since this time, Excel did no more crash on finishing the program. I repaired WIDCOMM bluetooth software to get the bluetooth Add-In for Word again and also in Word I
start the "Send to Bluetooth" assistent, followed the assistent and now also Word works without crashing.

I believe an updated version of the bluetooth add-in has been released (by the manufacturer), which explains why things worked smoothly after the re-download.

  • Can not open Word 2010 docx in Word 2013 from Outlook 2013 mail

    Hello,
I got a mail on outlook with a word 2010 attachment in docx format.
Open this attachment with double click will show only the welcome screen with the text Open in protected mode.
With process monitor I could that word 2013 in an endless loop and tries to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\Vprsu" in an loop.
The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
When I create this key manually there will be an loop to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\Assist".
The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
When I create this key manually. Word show the attachment immediatelly.
Closing Word and open the attachment again will delete this registry key and the cycle starts again.
Is there a hotfix available that will repair this?
I think this is an error in word 2013 protected view.
Disabling the protected view will help, but is not an good solution.
    Is there any other workarround?

This issue may occur if the default file associations for Word are damaged. You may repair Office 2013 to restore the file associations and check if that helps. Refer to the link below for more information. You may restart
the computer once the repair is done.

  • Word 2013 crashing opening Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document

    Hi
I am having a major problem with a large number of Word docs which have been copied to my file server. The docs are in Microsoft Word 97 – 2003 format and open fine with Office 2007. I recently rolled out Office 2013 to a department. When they try and open
these docs by double clicking the file, the Word splash screen with status "Starting..." opens with animated dots but stays in this state. I have left this for over 10 minutes but it doesn’t open. I end up having to close the splash screen using
the top right corner cross but if I check in task manager the task remains eating up 25-30% of the CPU - I have to kill the task from here. I have tested this locally and in RDS where majority of users work from hosted office sessions and the problem is evident
in both. The major problem is that RDS server CPU can reach 100% if a couple of users run into the problem.
Going back to the issue. If I open up a blank instance of Word 2013 first and go File - Open and browse to the file, if I choose “Open and Repair” the file opens with “Errors detected”:
"Drawn Objects and Text Boxes 1"
If I select "go to" it goes to the Footer/headers - There is nothing in the header/footer that looks like it is causing an issue. If I now save the file either as 2003 or docx and close, the next time I try and open (double click) the file opens
in compatibility mode or normal mode no problem. It seems strange Word is not able to automatically open/detect and repair anything it doesn’t like.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can work around this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Does this happen to all 97-2003 Word files?
Word 2013 now has lots of updates compared with earlier version of Word, lots of features have been updated. Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003 format), you will probably encounter unexpected problems,
expecially for those heavily formatted files.
We would suggest you to convert your document to the Word 2013 file format, then you will be able to access the new and enhanced features in Word 2013.

  • Error opening Project 2007 file after using project 2010

This is the second time I'm experiencing this problem.
Created a file (say Rev 1) in Project 2007 at work and took it home and updated it using Project 2010. When I finished updating using Project 2010, I saved the file in Project 2007 format. Came to work the next day, opened the file using
Project 2007 and did a "Save As" so that I have another revision of the file (Rev 2).
After updating Rev 2 in Project 2007 I closed it but when I came to work the next day I couldn't open Rev 2 file again either in Project 2007 or 2010. This has happened to me with 2 different files.
The error message I get is

  • Word 2013 cannot open embedded .docx files

I am running Word 2013 64-bit as part of an Office 365 ProPlus install. I am unable to open any embedded .docx files. Double clicking launches the message "The server application, source file, or item cannot be found." Single clicking displays
the message "Double-click to edit Unknown".
I can open other embedded file types: doc, xls, xlsm. Embedded Outlook email files will open, but now display as OLE objects. Also the icon for embedded files now usually appears as the 'box with contents'.
Opening files directly in Word works correctly, the problem is limited to opening embedded docx files.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated...thanks. -JAmsUser

    Hi,
“I am unable to open any embedded .docx files” - I would like to confirm that whether these files are new created or existing files which might be created in an earlier version of Office.
The error indicates that the connection between the embedded documents and the Office application has been broken. So what if you remove and re-embed it into the document? Embed it again might pick up the new mechanisms.
I'd also suggest you run an Online Repair and see if it helps:

  • How can I prevent Word 2013  from opening a PDF file to edit it?

As per the title - I create training manuals in MS Word and save as PDF for distribution to clients.
How cna I prevent them from opening and editing them with Word 2013?

You can restrict editing and printing of a PDF document by setting permissions when you create the initial PDF. This can be done as:
    Open Word document to convert.
Go to Acrobat tab on Word ribbon -> Select Preferences button.
On Security tab of the Preferences dialog, tick mark the check box for "Restrict editing and printing of the document. A password will be required in order to change these permission settings."
Specify a password in "Change Permissions Password" tex box.
    Click OK.
Input the password again in the confirmation dialog.
    Go to "Create PDF" button.
The PDF thus created, will have editing restricted. And Word 2013 will not be able to open it.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot open QB 2007 file after installing R7 upgrade

I installed the Quickbooks Pro 2007 "upgrade" and then tried to open my old Quickbooks Pro 2007 for Mac company file.
1.) It asks me if I want to Upgrade the file (no choice)
2.) Then it simultaneously says "Working" and gives me a warning about the file not being able to be renamed and that I have to rename it and save it in the QB folder.
3.) Then - whatever name I give it - it says it could not create the upgraded file.
4.) It also says that it could not open the existing file.
I'm not sure what to do - the file is only 4.7MB and I've tried every combination to get it to open.
Is there some trick? Nothing about this on the Intuit Forum. Nothing on Google either.
Help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot open my business file!

I guess what is happening is that I originally installed quickbooks and the company file on my macMini and I suspect that it is not opening it on my iMac because of a sharing violation.
I did unlock both the application and the files but they still won't open.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just want to save the file to my iPod and I don't care which app I should use.

Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

    - Delete iBooks and reinstall

    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

I'm guessing the problem stems from whomever is sending the files to you. Have them do as I also suggested previously - zip the files before attaching them to the email.
You can also try the following:
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
    For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
    For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
