Word 2013 (64-bit on Win8.1 64-bit) crashes crashes on opening any document by double-click

Very much like thread

2013 on Win 8.1. As I don't need them, all add-ons where disabled. The document opens proper in the 64-bit Mac Office 2011
There is not GUI error message. Office was freshly installed. In the event log there are only the normal messages from Security-SPP. Are there other source of logging that could hint in the proper direction?

Hi,
Since the issue isn't related to Add-ins, please perform a clean boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with Word:
1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen,  and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click
Search.
2. Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click
msconfig.
3. On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the
Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click
Disable all.
4. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click
Open Task Manager.
5. On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click
Disable.
6. Close Task Manager.
7. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click
OK, and then restart the computer.
More information about clean boot can be found in this kb below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
You will also need to read the section "What is next when I have a clean boot environment?" to troubleshoot the problem.
As you mentioned, if you find any threads that indicates the updates aggravate the problem, would you please share the thread link with me?

  • Word 2010 (64-bit on Win7 64-bit) crashes crashes on opening any document by double-click.

Sad to have to open repeat thread, but I'm having the same problem that Maurice Reed was having (that thread is now locked, although I didn't see any solution there).
I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 (64) and Office 2010 (64). Any time I double-click on a document to open it (that is, any time I open a document from Windows Explorer), Word 2010 crashes.
This includes situations where Word 2010 is already running and I open a doc or docx from Windows.
This also happens with NEWLY CREATED documents. I tested this by opening Word and creating and saving a brand new document. Opening that doc (docx) from Windows triggers this crash.
I tried deleting the Normal.dot as was suggested in other threads.
Also tried installing updates and hotfix from Microsoft. No luck.
I'm curious as to why Maurice's thread was locked when there didn't appear to be any resolution to it.
I'm stunned that such a widespread problem would go without a patch, hotfix or resolution for so many months. Am I missing something? I've been researching this for about a month off and on now. Have yet to see an actual fix. On the other hand, I've heard
about this problem from others even before it happened to me.
What's going on up there? Where are Bartley & Jeanne when we need them. ;D
        - Dave F.

    Hi Dave,
Maurice's thread was locked because he is using Office 2010 Beta, and his post is in the forum for Office Beta, since the Beta is past due, the whole forum is locked.
Let's go back to your question.
Have you installed the Office 2010 Service Pack 1? The service pack fixes many issues, you should try if you haven't.
    Download
the Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 64-bit package now.
I may to metion is that all I know the Office 2010 64-bit will work smoothly with Windows 7 64-bit, cause I'm using it for my daily work.
So, the problem you met with mostly caused by the 3rd-party add-ins/services.
Have you tried to open the document by holding the Ctrl key? This will open the document in safe mode, if you are able to do so, this will help us to narrow down the root cause.
If it will crash even when you start it in safe mode, let's try to run a clean boot to check this issue. In a clean boot, lots of service will be disabled, if we wouldn't get problem in a clean boot, then we can enable the service little by little, then
we can find out which service might cause this issue.
For a detail instruction, you can refer to this kb:

Let me know the result, any questions, feel free to let me know.

  • After clean install Preview and MS Word won't open any documents.

Did a clean install of Mavericks. Restored my files from dropbox. (thousands of pdf and word files, doc. and docx)
Now, preview and MS Word won't open any documents.
Preview fails to open PDF so as MS Word fails to open any doc or docx file. Both crash on launch (not responding).
The only way to open the files is renaming them.
Try to delete the .plist (preview and Word), dont work.
    Anyone know how to fix?

    Hi Waqas
Thanks for your help with this. I had a look at both posts, the URL works fine from the WAC server and I am not using a System account to test docs.
Also, this is a production site that is accessible over the Internet, so we are using https therefore the WOPIZone is external-https.
Issue #3 in the above blog link does not reflect the same error I see on my servers.
I also had a look at the information in this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff431687.aspx#oauth
Problem: You receive a "Sorry, there was a problem and we can't open this document" error when you try to view an Office document in Office Web Apps.
If you added domains to the Allow List by using the
New-OfficeWebAppsHost cmdlet, make sure you’re accessing Office Web Apps from a host domain that’s in the Allow List. To view the host domains in the Allow List, on the Office Web Apps Server open the Windows PowerShell prompt as an administrator and run
the Get-OfficeWebAppsHost cmdlet. To add a domain to the Allow List, use the
    New-OfficeWebAppsHost cmdlet.
I have not added any domains to the Allow list so this did not help either. Should I add the domain?
Any further help with this is much appreciated.
    Thanks again.

  • Word 2007 doesn't open any documents.

    Hello.
Our team are running Outlook 2010 and all the other office apps in 2007.
However, Word 2007 always has a problem with opening documents.
It works, shows none of error messages and the Word 2007 window opens properly but just doesn't show any documents.
To open a document, I have to drag and drop a document in Word 2007  that I want to.
After this small bothering task, everything works really fine.
I have changed every settings and add-in that could cause this issue.
To solve this problem Word 2007 has to be removed and installed again.
I'm really struggling to fix this issue but haven't found any reason.
Please help me with this issue!

Yes I thought of the same thing.
What I found was 2010 changed something in 2007 after Windwos Update.
    This might be registries.
An error message box pops up saying 2007 got damaged when I try to remove 2007 from Programs and Features and the list of 2007 is just gone leaving all the functions and feature stayed on a computer.
Office 2007 still works after removing just 'the Office 2007 list' though.
In this case 2007 has to be installed(actually over-installed) AGAIN to write 2007's registry properly, remove 2007 than install 2007 again.
So annoying... to fix this issue, have to do this task...
As you mentioned, I need something to manage the registry and will read the description on the web page carefully.
Thank you so much. Stefan Blom.

  • Access 2013: can't find language dll msain.dll when double-clicking acce-file in explorer

    Hi,
When I want to open an acce-file by double-clicking it in Windows explorer it get the error:
    'Can't find Language DLL msain.dll'
The strange thing (IMO) is that when I open the accde-file from within Access, it opens fine. Also clicking on the accde-file in the 'recent'-part of the pinned to the taskbar Access-icon, opens the file just fine.
    (Office 2013 - 32 bit on Windows 7 - 64 bit)
Anyone know a solution for this behaviour?

    Hi,
To the error massage, copy msain.dll from another computer and place inside the %installdir%/1033 folder.
If it's not work, I recommend you repair Access.

  • Can not open Word 2010 docx in Word 2013 from Outlook 2013 mail

    Hello,
I got a mail on outlook with a word 2010 attachment in docx format.
Open this attachment with double click will show only the welcome screen with the text Open in protected mode.
With process monitor I could that word 2013 in an endless loop and tries to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\Vprsu" in an loop.
The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
When I create this key manually there will be an loop to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\Assist".
The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
When I create this key manually. Word show the attachment immediatelly.
Closing Word and open the attachment again will delete this registry key and the cycle starts again.
Is there a hotfix available that will repair this?
I think this is an error in word 2013 protected view.
Disabling the protected view will help, but is not an good solution.
    Is there any other workarround?
    Screenshot from process monitor:
    Best Regards,
    Dieter

This issue may occur if the default file associations for Word are damaged. You may repair Office 2013 to restore the file associations and check if that helps. Refer to the link below for more information. You may restart
the computer once the repair is done.

Note: Close all Office applications before you perform the repair.

  • How to center Text Box on Web Page? -- Web dev with Word 2013

I'm trying to assist a user who wants to use Word 2013 for simple web page development.
There are many tools but they want to use Word 2013.
Actually have it working by saving the Word 2013 files as web pages... like index.htm, about.htm, etc.
The problem is when we use the "Insert" tab in Word to create a "Text Box" or a "Shape" ...
And align it centered on the page... it looks fine in Word but when we open it with a web browser the "Text Box" or "shape" are no longeer centered.
We thought we had it fixed by making the "Text Box" Layout Options "In Line with Text" but again... looks fine in Word but not in a web browser.
The question: How can we get a "Text Box" in Word 2013 to appear centered on a web page?
    thanks for any help.

    Hi:
For webpage design, I would suggest customized form under develop tab on the Ribbon over insert object directly. I tested from my side, using customized form will lock the object position on the
    page.

  • Word 2013 crashing opening Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document

    Hi
I am having a major problem with a large number of Word docs which have been copied to my file server. The docs are in Microsoft Word 97 – 2003 format and open fine with Office 2007. I recently rolled out Office 2013 to a department. When they try and open
these docs by double clicking the file, the Word splash screen with status "Starting..." opens with animated dots but stays in this state. I have left this for over 10 minutes but it doesn’t open. I end up having to close the splash screen using
the top right corner cross but if I check in task manager the task remains eating up 25-30% of the CPU - I have to kill the task from here. I have tested this locally and in RDS where majority of users work from hosted office sessions and the problem is evident
in both. The major problem is that RDS server CPU can reach 100% if a couple of users run into the problem.
Going back to the issue. If I open up a blank instance of Word 2013 first and go File - Open and browse to the file, if I choose “Open and Repair” the file opens with “Errors detected”:
"Drawn Objects and Text Boxes 1"
If I select "go to" it goes to the Footer/headers - There is nothing in the header/footer that looks like it is causing an issue. If I now save the file either as 2003 or docx and close, the next time I try and open (double click) the file opens
in compatibility mode or normal mode no problem. It seems strange Word is not able to automatically open/detect and repair anything it doesn’t like.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can work around this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Does this happen to all 97-2003 Word files?
Word 2013 now has lots of updates compared with earlier version of Word, lots of features have been updated. Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003 format), you will probably encounter unexpected problems,
expecially for those heavily formatted files.
We would suggest you to convert your document to the Word 2013 file format, then you will be able to access the new and enhanced features in Word 2013.

  • Is there a way to programmatically save a Word 2013 document into a Word 2010 in compatibility mode?

    Hi,
I have a Word 2013 document that I want to open in Word 2010.  The problem is this document has a repeating section content control and if I open it in Word 2010, the content control is removed so the data won't be seen.  Is there any way programmatically
to save the document in Word 2010 compatible mode?  So that I can open in both Word 2013 and 2010.  By the way, I'm using C# and OpenXML for this.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on my tested, I created a "Rich Text" content control in Word 2013, and it'll works fine in Word 2010.
As far as I know, in Word 2013, content controls provide three key improvements: improved visualization, support for XML Mapping for Rich Text content controls, and a new content control for repeating content.
Please see the article "What's new with content controls in Word 2013" it may be helpful to you.

  • Microsoft word 2013 freezes momentarily every few minutes

    Hello Microsoft Technet
I am having a problem with word, which consists of it basically not responding whenever i type something. Currently i am working on a document of 1300 words, not tried out whether or not it happens in other documents, but nonetheless, i will try my best
    to describe the problem accurately:
It can be after writing a whole paragraph, or after a single word, that the program stops responding. It believe that at this point, it is still active, but computing a lot of things? i dont know, but whenever it "freezes" the small | (line) thing
showing where i am currently typing continues to blink as if it was waiting for me to type, but i am unable to click anything. I cant naviagte the document, not even click the save button or use keyboard shortcuts. Then after a few moments, sometimes a minute
or two, the document will slowly type whatever i have been pressing while the document was "frozen". "for instance, i am typing a senten"         (it freezes) and i do not notice this, so i continue typing only to see
    this:
for instance, i am typing a senten|       then after a while, it will write a few of the letters in chunks at a time:
for instance, i am typing a sentence here, whi|
for instance, i am typing a sentence here, which should be an exa|     if i tehn notice it freezing, i may type random things and wait for it to look something like this:
for instance, i am typing a sentence here, which shokkkkkjlllllllggghhhhh|
I have hardware acceleration and pixel (thing) in advanced options turned off. Thank you for at least trying to understand my weird problem. Any help is much appreciated!

    Hi,
First of all, please try to copy all the words in that document to a new document, work on the new one for a while, check if the problem persists.
The step above helps determine whether the issue is related to one specific document or it's caused by Word 2013.
    1. If the problem only occurs to one specific document, I suspect it's somehow broken. Try to use the "Open and Repair" feature in Word 2013 to open the file and check if the issue persists:
In Word 2013, click FILE -> Open -> Browse to the file location -> Select the document -> Select "Open and Repair" from the Open button.
You can also copy the existing words to a new document to keep working with it.
    2. If the problem occurs to other documents too, then something in Word 2013 seems to be the culprit.
I suggest you run Word in safe mode to determine whether the issue is related to some 3rd-party add-ins:
Press Win + R, type "winword.exe /safe" in the blank box, press Enter.
Open the document from FILE -> Open, check if the problem persists.
If no, I suggest you go to FILE -> Options -> Add-Ins to disable the suspicious add-in to verify which one caused the issue.
If none of the steps above helps, I want to collect the event logs to find the cause of the issue:
Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter.
Browse to Windows Logs -> Application. Check the error about the freeze issue, you can send me the logs to help analyze the problem.

  • Double clicking brings up selection box rather than highlighting words

This is a bit of a trivial problem but it's making my editing quite difficult. I'm using Acrobat X 10, with Windows 7.
Normally when I double click on some text, the word that I am double clicking on will become highlighted. This continues to be the case except for in one specific pdf document: now double clicking opens a selection box rather than highlighting text. If I single click I can highlight whatever text I want, but double clicking no longer highlight a particular word. This is very incumbersome for my annotating/highlighting technique. It only happens with this one pdf, any other pdf and the selection tool is back to normal.
Any idea why this is happening for this one particular pdf, but none of the others, or any way that I can make it highlight words via double clicking again?
Edit: On further inspection, the problem seems to be that for this particular document, acrobat reader cannot detect specifc words, only individual characters. When I highlight a sentence, normally the text highlighted would naturally jump to the end of the word, but here it will only start/stop where I begin and end dragging the cursor. I have used the Recognise Text tool, but this did not fix the problem as it said it had already recognised the text throughout the document.

Can you use the "Prompt" section of the Property Palette instead and leave Label as null. Prompts can be aligned to the left, but, without trying it in Forms 4.5, am unsure about your highlight issue.
