Word 2013 holds onto file after exit

I regularly download a file via FTP as file yyy.doc on my hard drive. As soon as the transfer completes, I double-click on the file in Windows Explorer to open it in Word 2013. (I've got it configured to prompt me for "Convert File -- from Plain Text"
during the open.) I then run some VBE macros to format the file, saving it in Word 2013 format but retaining the original .doc extension.
Every now and then I hit a problem when I X-out of that document while I still have other Word docs open. I don't know if the issue is related to changes I may have made to the doc that I choose to discard on exit. But after what appears to be a clean exit,
I re-run the FTP, downloading into the same file, yyy.doc. The FTP gets an error because the file is apparently still in use. Today several FTP's in a row failed due to this, then a short time later it worked. Other times I found that if I closed all the other
Word docs, the FTP would start working successfully, but that may just be a timing thing, and eventually it might have worked even if I didn't close those other documents.
After getting the error from FTP, if I try to delete file yyy.doc, which still shows up in Windows Explorer, it tells me that the delete can't be performed because the file is still in use by Word.
I'm guessing this has to do with the "Welcome back" feature. (Incidentally, often it welcomes me back to my document after I have overlaid the previous version completely via FTP. How would that ever work?) Does anybody have any thoughts as to
why the file remains in use by Word? Any way for me to change the current behavior?
Rich G

Hi Rich,
Thank you for your feedback.
I noticed that you mentioned "ran my Word 2013 macros to format the file and save it". What if you open and save it directly without running the macro? Just give it a try and see if issue persists.
So actually the problem will go away after about one minute, I would suggest we try to run
Process Monitor to track down the issue and see what's causing the delay (accessing the process).
If you would like us to help analyze the Process Monitor log, you can send the log file to this email account:
[email protected] and inform us here (the email subject should be the link of this thread).

  • Word 2013 generates .docx files that cannot be read on Word 2010

    Howdy,
I received a MS Word document that was created on Word for Mac 2011.  I opened it, edited it and saved it in .docx format.  I have MS Word 2013 running on a humble PC.
Now the Mac cannot read my file.  Also, PC's running Word 2010 cannot read the file.
However, many different machines running Word 2013 can open the file, Google Docs can open the file, Word in the Cloud can open the file, open office can open the file and even Word 2003 with the compatibility pack can open and edit the file.
Mac's give an error message that essentially says "xml format incorrect".  PCs simply say the file format is wrong.  No other details.  Various compatibility checks inside word say that everything is compatible with prior versions
of Word with the exception of my equations which it says will be converted to .gifs if viewed in word 2003.
Any idea what is going on?  Supposedly, Word 2007, 2010 and 2013 all use the same xml formats, so its a bit of a mystery why 2010 (and 2011 on the Mac) cannot open a standard format .xml file that was created by 2013.
The file contains text, figures and equations.  Nothing else.  No macros, no VBA code.
    Thoughts or advice?

    Hi,
What is the file's original extension? .doc?
If you saved the file in .docx format by changing the extension directly, the issue may occur, please make sure you saved it by "Save as". Or we can rename the file from ".docx" to the original extension, check if the issue
    persists.
If it's not your scenario above, we can also try to "repair" the file in Word 2010:
Open Word 2010, Click File -> Open -> Browse to the file and use "Open and Repair" to open the file.
If the suggestions above don't help, please provide the exact error message that you get in Word 2010 so that I can perform further research.

  • Deploying .dotx files to domain for Word 2013

    Hello,
So I know that we can. I'm just not able to get it to work correctly, and want to go back to the drawing board.
I would like to deploy 3 .dotx to every user so they can open new and see the templates in the list.
We also have Office 365, and AD so what ever way would take the least amount of administrative overhead.
    Thank you

They are not going to see them directly in the list using File > New without a lot of overhead. That shows MS online templates with non-obvious buttons to local templates.
Look into putting them in your
Workgroup Templates folder. That folder can be updated locally as a part of the user login.
For how this works with File New look at the Word 2013 sections of
File New Variations in the Versions of Word. Files in the Workgroup Templates folder can show up using File New or using the classic FileNew dialog.

  • Opening Word 2007 docs in Word 2013 and formatting is changed??

We just installed 2 new PC's on the network with Office 2013.  Everyone else is running 2007.  When an existing file is opened on either of the 2 PC's running Word 2013 the formatting and layout is changed.  The font is changed even though
the same font is available and the layout is changed a little and the document does not fit on 1 page any more.  It shifts about 2 or 3 lines at the bottom to the next page.  When we open the same file in Word 2007 everything is still good.  Word
2013 opens the file in 'compatibility mode' but still the layout is changed.  We have hundreds of documents that we need to be able to open in both Word 2007 and 2013.  Any suggestions on how we can make this work??

    Hi,
As far as I know, if we open a Word 2007 file in Word 2013 with Compatibility Mode, it will preserve the layout of the document. I recommend you try to convert the document to the Word 2013 mode to test. Steps:
    Click the File tab.
To convert the document without saving a copy, click Info, and then click
    Convert.

If this issue still exists, could you send us a sample file via Email ([email protected])? I'd like to test it.

  • [CS5] InDesign Server holding onto script file after being executed?

    Hello,
I've run into a scenario which we have a script file dynamically created, saved to disk, then sent to InDesign Server to be executed. The code that tells InDesign Server to execute the script will delete that script file after it's finished executing. This works MOST of the time. However, sometimes, we get IO Execeptions stating that the file cannot be deleted because it is still in use. It would appear that InDesign Server is possibly holding onto the script files maybe even for just a millisecond after it's finished executing.
Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I'm looking for possible things to check (maybe it's not even ID Server that is the problem). Or maybe there is some option within ID Server when executing scripts that would allow ID Server to remove the file instead of our .NET code?
    Any advice/suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks!
    -lhanneman

    UPDATE:
It appears that this problem is related to IDS executing the script. I've narrowed the problem down by taking the script execution completely out of the equation. If my code saves the script to disk and attempts to delete it right after - it works every time. I'm also able to, within our .NET code, save the script to disk, open the file up, read a line out, close it, and then immediately delete it. ONLY when ID Server executes that script between writing the file and deleting the file do we have problems.
Has anyone ever encountered anything like this? It seems to be directly related to ID Server holding onto the file for too long.
Again, many thanks in advance for any help!

  • Word 2013 hangs every time I save a file

    Hi,
I have Word 2013 (15.0.4481.1508) on Windows 8 as part of Office Professional Plus (15.0.4481.1001) 64-bit. I'm saving to an SSD that seems to work fine. (Games load in seconds, all drive benchmarks report good performance.)
Every time I save a document however, Word rejects all user input (I cannot continue typing) until the "saving to disk" progress bar at the bottom of the window indicates that the file is done being written to disk. This takes several seconds to
complete during which the application is unresponsive.
Things continue works fine afterwards. It happens with documents of all sizes; 20KB, 100KB, 200KB. It feels as if saving was done on the main GUI thread, as opposed to a background worker.
I made it my habit back in Office 2010 to save every 5-10 seconds -- after every sentence -- but now I can't do that anymore because of this slowdown.
    Please advise.

    Hi Danien,
Apart from Word, have you tried the other applications? Such as
Excel and the other Office applications
    NotePad
    WordPad
    Will this behavior also happen?
-a. If this behaivor also happen when save in Excel and other Office applications, this might be an Office specific problem
-b. If this behaivor only happen to Word, then it is a Word specific problem
    For situations a & b,
    try repair Office as a quick fix;
    check the activated add-ins, disable them and start the applications again to determine if this could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins;
For situation c, try start Word with the command line switch:
    WinWord.exe /a
The /a switch will prevents add-ins, settings and global templates (including the Normal template) from being loaded automatically.
-c. If this behavior also happen when save in Office applications and NotePad and WordPad, then this should be a hardware compatibility issue

  • Will Word 2016 have the option to save documents as the Word 97-2003 file format like Word 2013 does?

This is talking about if Word 2016 will have the option to save documents as the Word 97-2003 format like Word 2013 does or not.

    Hi Carolyn,
It sounds as though the filename extension association has become confused on your system. It's odd that it happened after conversion, but it should be easy to fix nonetheless.
Here are some instructions for changing file associations on both Mac OS and Windows:
Change File Associations in Mac OS X - OS X Daily
Change which programs Windows uses by default ... (Windows 7)
Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help (Windows Vista)
Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

How do I store and retrieve a Word file after it's been converted to an PDF?  My file has been trapped in PDF"hell" assigned to a folder that cannot be opened or read, but when deleted, also deletes the original Word file...

I think we need some more info here like, how are you converting to PDF. This is the Reader forum and it doesn't convert files to PDF.

  • Acrobat Pro XI is not recognizing Word 2013 files when I try to combine files in a single PDF. Please help.

I recently upgraded to Office 2013. Everything seems to be working fine with Acrobat Pro XI, except when I try to combine Word 2013 files into a single PDF, I get this message: "Acrobat does not support the conversion of one or more of your files to PDF. . . ." Please help. Thanks.

I've opened both Word and Excel. The Acrobat ribbon is showing in both programs and I did some test things and they seem to be working fine. However,  I still cannot see or use formats other than pdf in the Acrobat Pro program. Is there another setting that needs to be adjusted?

  • Word 2013 - Error inserting an HTML file in a word document

    Hello,
Here is an issue i'm having:
Open a blank doc in Word 2013
Click Insert - Object - Create from file. Then select an html file, click insert and ok.
i'm always getting the below error message:
I can reproduce this issue on multiple machines.
Office 2013 preview and Office 2013 RTM are getting same error.
    Anyone else ?
    Thanks

    Hi Christophe_P,
I’m able to repro the behavior in my test environment as per your repro steps.
An Office repair does NOT impact the issue for me.
I’ll report the issue to the Office product group.
    A possible workaround:
    In a Word 2013 document>Insert tab > Text group > Click Object
In the Object dialog, click the Create New tab
Select Microsoft Word Object; then click OK
In the newly embedded/activated Word doc object, click Insert tab > Text group > Click the Object dropdown arrow; then choose “Text from File…”
In the Insert File dialog, navigate to; then select the html file; then click Insert.

  • ODT file images not displaying correctly in Word 2013

When I open an ODT file in Word 2013, the images appear "grayed out". I must click on each to reset them to automatic color.  This only happens in mine, when I send the file to others, the images display fine. I am thinking it is some sort
of setting in word, but can't figure out what.

    Hi,
Does this happen to all ODT files or a certain one?
As an initial troubleshooting step, please try to open Word in safe mode and try again:
    Type winword.exe /safe in Run
dialog (Press Windows key + R)and hit Enter, to start Word in safe mode.
Office Safe Mode will help to determine if there is any add-ins caused the issue.
