Word 2013 shows full UNC path instead of local "Documents" folder on file Open and Save

Normally Word (and Excel) by default will show the user's local "Documents" folder when opening or saving a file. That is what we want. However, after using Windows Server Folder Redirection to redirect the Documents folder to the network (Windows
Server 2012R2), Word now shows the full UNC path to the network share.
Instead of seeing:
"MyPC  Documents"
users see
\\sever1\redirect$\username\documents
Folder redirection is supposed to be transparent to the user. Virtually all our other applications, including Office 2003, respect this convention and continue to show "Documents". As you can see, Word even exposes a hidden share.
Even if we go to File / Options / Save and browse to the local Documents folder as the place Word should open and save files from, Word immediately removes the path you have browsed to, and replaces it with the UNC path.
Is there a way to suppress this behavior? Thanx!
Dana

Hi,
Based on my understanding, you only want others to see some part of path name, rather than full UNC path name. It is right?
It seems that we can’t implement your requirement. When we open a file from “My Pictures”, it shows “My picture” instead of showing the full path “C:\Users\User\Pictures”. “My Picture” is set as a library in Windows, so it hides
full path by design. We can't set \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents as a library.
As a workaround, you can upload these files to OneDrive and share link to others.
If I have anything misunderstood, don't hesitate to tell me.

    Doublechecking something Emcee. I see you've got Windows 7 x64, so I'm assuming you've got at least 4 GB of RAM. Do you also have an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset on that PC? If so, see the following Microsoft document:

  • What's happening when Word opens and saves a document?

    Hello,
    I got very unspecific question, but I don't know where to start. I have an open xml document which gets generated by a third party tool. If I open the document using open xml sdk it looks VERY different from how it looks like when I opened and saved it before
    using Word 2013.
    I'm trying to get an understanding on whats Word doing! From what I've seen it's doing some remodelling on the xml file, since it looks very different (other and way more descendants than before) and I would like to achieve the same thing using open xml.
    Although this might be already to much information: The generated word documents contains html code with links to pictures. After Word has touched the file the picture is inside a drawing element, before it's not but in Word both versions look the same.
    I'm thankful for any help you can give me.

    This forum is discussing about Open XML developing. This is not exactly an OpenXML SDK questions. To be frank, I do not know exactly what Word opens and saves a documents either (this is the implementation details of the product).
    If you are interested on it, the forum below might be more appropriate for you:

    What do you mean by “other and way more descendants”? Do you mean that you want to add new nodes in the xml document? In my option, different objects in word have different nodes. You could refer the link below for more information about Word processing.

  • Open and save dialog boxes just show earlier and can't be sorted

    Mountail Lion has new open and save dialog boxes that are displayed in groupings by date and other variables.
    My Photoshop CS5 shows "Previous 7 days", "Earlier", etc. I can no longer adjust this sorting. Often, just the "Earlier" shows and current files are missing from the box. I used the sorting option but can't sort within the list.
    My inDesign files still use the earlier open and save dialog box. Where can I switch between these options?
    Photoshop Open:
    inDesign Open:

    I solved my own question through trial and error.
    Just select "None" on the dropdown selector (see screen capture, above) and the Open/Save dialog will revert to the older version.

  • How can I use Automator to open and save Word docs with links?

    Hi-
    I'm having trouble building a Workflow to open and save Word docs with links.
    My Workflow so far:
    1. Get Finder items
    2. Copy Finder items (to new folder)
    3. Rename selected items
    4. Open selected items (Word docs)
    Three problems occur.
    The first is a Word 2004 problem -- I can't get the warning "This document has links in it; do you want to open it with/without updating the links" to go away (Unilke the Macro warning toggle capability, there is nothing in the Preferences for Word 2004 that addresses the links warning, as far as I can tell; any insight you can shed on this would be terrific.)
    The second problem happens with Automator: if I manually accept the update of the first document's links, Automator opens that document but then halts completely, even though I've instructed it to open multiple documents.
    The third problem I have is that there's no Finder action in Automator that allows me to save the document that's now open (as far as I can see).
    Any suggestions for how to fix? If I can get this to work, and scheduled in iCal, it will be an unbelievable time saver.
    Thanks,

    Hi there Jeremy,
    to do this you are going to have to add in some Run AppleScript steps...
    These will rely on GUI Scripting. So first you need to activate GUI Scripting.
    Now we need to add in a Run AppleScript action to the end of your workflow...
    This will replace your current number 4 in the workflow (Open Selected...)
    click here to open this script in your editor<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:400px">on run {input, parameters}
    set allItems to every item of input
    repeat with currItem in allItems
    tell application "TextWrangler"
    open currItem
    end tell
    activate application "TextWrangler"
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "TextWrangler"
    delay 2
    --when the Word document is opened I have told it to press okay !
    --I don't know what key you want it to press in the dialog box
    keystroke return
    delay 2
    --save the doc
    keystroke "s" using command down
    delay 5
    --close the doc
    keystroke "w" using command down
    end tell
    end tell
    end repeat
    return input
    end run</pre>
    The above script should open each Word Document, press a button in the dialog box then do a save and then close the doc...then loop through the rest of them.
    You need to replace the name Text Wrangler with Microsoft Word (or whatever it is called!), I don't have it on my Mac.
    You will have to let me know what button needs pressing in the first dialog, if it isn't the 'highlighted ' one then we will have to amend the script...
    regards

    And after saving * symbol is get removed from the name of document. How and where indesign@ handles this?

    Are you just asking because you want to know, or do you have a problem you need to solve? I don't know how to write a program, but I think what your are describing is not an unusual thing for a  program to do. The * tells you that changes have been made since the last save, and the program reserves a portion of memory for undo functions. I suppose a coder could tell you how it works, but I don't think it would help an average user to know, but that's just my opinion.

  • HOW TO OPEN AND SAVE FILES TO/FOR MS-WORD 2007 .docx format

    MS-Office 2007 will open .docx files as well as .doc files. Apple's Pages '08 can OPEN MS Word 2007 documents with the new file format ".docx". Pages '08 can not save as ".docx" files, just ".doc" files, but since MS Office 2007 can open these ".doc" without a problem, you should be covered.
    Here is how.
    To open: Just double click the file and Apple's Pages '08 will import the file and open it for you to use and modify.
    To save and use at your work or school's Windows MS Word 2007: When you are done and ready to save the file, go to FILE in the menu bar in Pages '08 and select EXPORT. Then pick the icon DOC WORD and click NEXT. Then in the SAVE AS box, give it a name and tell where you want to save your file to. Click EXPORT. Export is like Save, as it will now save the file where you told it to save it to. Remember you can use the same name, or give it a new name. Thats it. EASY.
    It will save the file in a Windows Word format of ".doc" that MS Word 2007 can open and use.
    Hope this helps people.

    Why yes. How did you know that I saw the way, the truth and the light?
    I just had so many people ask me how to do this, that I thought I might share it with as many people as I could and help the masses To bad that Apple just did not have it as a simple "Save As:" Maybe in the next update.

  • Download folder doesn't open and instead makes Terminal open up

    MacOSX 10.9.5 on MacBook Air of 2014. Open downloadfolder in Finder does not work. Trying so opens the terminal window saying only the name of the folder and -bash- . In Finder list view moreover the download folder lost its little triangle at the beginning of the name.
    This behaviour started when I tried an old mediathek to open in iPhoto 9.5.1.  It said I must download an actualization file, install it and then ... I did so, but when now opening iPhoto with any photo(s) it says it needs actualization and when I click on "Actualizar" (all Spanish), iPhoto crashes each time. The downloadfolder problem started the same moment.
    On my second MacBookAir, same MacOSX, same purchase date, it did the following, when trying to open that same mediathek with the same version of  iPhoto: Image folder (instead of download folder ...) does not open and starts Terminal as described above. MOREOVER all icons on the screen are "fixed" (not sorted!) and can't be moved to a different place on screen with the trackpad or mouse (can be moved though to other folders and trash bin). They follow, but when releasing they jump back to their original position. And iPhoto on this second one behaves equally, asking for "actualizar" and then crashes, when I confirm it.
    Weird, isn't it? Thanks for any good advice ...

    i just went into preferences, deleted what was in the home page, and entered a new home page address which solved the problem,

  • I am trying to uninstall and reinstall InDesign and a box shows up saying there is a file open, and I can't find it to close it. Before that, InDesign wouldn't open at all.

    I was trying to open InDesign and it wouldn't open at all. So I tried to uninstall it, intending to reinstall it to see if that would fix the problem. A box popped up saying a file was open, but I couldn't find the file to close it. What else can I try?

    I just uninstalled it and am waiting for it to reinstall. I sincerely hope that I have not lost everything that I worked on so hard. Now that mobile me is gone, I have not been able to go between devices to transfer things. I was merely trying to take a document I had worked on and open it in pages, but it said my version was too old. When I updated, it wouldn't load. Now I cannot do anything. I hope that the reinstall fixes it without losing everything. Please advise!!! Yes, I am in panic mode.

  • Passing UNC path as parameter in URL

    Hello All,
    I used the application creation wizard (APEX 3.1) to create an application (report + form) based on a table who's primary key is a UNC path to an image (\\servername\folder\image.tiff). The report page (page 1) has a link to the form where users can edit information for the record (page 2). Unfortunately, every time I click on a record's link, page 2 comes up with "No data found."
    I know this has to do with the fact that the data I'm passing has backslashes ("\") and they're not being escaped properly. The branch properties show the target as "Page in this Application" where the UNC path is being passed to an item on page two that is hidden and protected.
    I've tried a few different things to try and work around this problem:
    1.) In my main query, selected another field based on the original UNC Path, but with the backslashes replaced with pipes ('|'). I then have a process on page 2 at the "on load" point before the fetch row that converts it back to backslashes. This works so far as pulling the correct record onto page two, but whenever I update anything the update statement is still looking for the UNC with pipes rather than the backslashes. I'm assuming because the item that I'm sending the value to is hidden and protected, that any HTML on that page won't be able to alter that value, so the pipes aren't being replaced with the backslashes.
    2.) I also tried using a javascript:window.document.location.href... function and adding extra backslashes in the UNC path to escape the original ones, but this didn't work.
    I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions on how to pass this value without changing the item to unprotected.
    Thank you,
    Teddy

    Teddy,
    No bother at all. A long time ago, perhaps in version 1.6, we added the feature that allows "item values" containing commas to be passed in the "f?p" URL. As you know, the comma is the token that separates item values (if there is more than one). But it was becoming increasingly common for developers to need to allow that character as part of an item value. This was implemented such that if an item value starts and ends with a backslash then we would treat any comma between the two as part of the item value and not as a "separator" character.
    When you tried to pass the UNC path as an item value, because this started with a backslash, the parser treated it as the beginning of a backslash-enclosed value. Failing to find a closing backslash, it yielded undesirable results and discarded the first backslash, and perhaps more.
    In other words, it's a bug that what you tried did not work. But the solution is straightforward so I'm going to leave it at that, if you agree.

  • Unable to access UNC path on 2012 R2 file server with ABE enabled

    Brief Description:
    We have granted access to people via a domain local group on a folder on a file server that is three levels deep from the share, i.e. \\servercluster\share\folder1\folder2\folder3, where folder3 is where the group is granted Read & Execute
    access.  The share has Access-Based Enumeration (ABE) enabled and the Everyone group has Full Control share permissions.  We also use DFS, so the path for that is \\domain\dfsrootname\folderfororganization\share\folder1\folder2\folder3.  People
    in the aforementioned group only have access to folder3, its subfolders, and files.  They do not have any access to folder2 or any of the other folders higher in the tree at all.  Also, consider that folder3 contains a subfolder folder4, which is
    simply inheriting permissions.
    What we have found is that clients running Windows 7 SP1 have strange access issues when attempting to access the folder via either the DFS or cluster name UNC paths.
    Detailed Testing Results Accessing Folder3 Directly:
    NOTE:  "UNC path" in the following test results means either the DFS or the cluster name share path.  The results are the same regardless which path is used.
    1 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash in Windows Explorer's address bar:
    Windows Explorer seems to do nothing for about 30 seconds and then displays the following error:
    "Windows cannot access <UNC path>
    Check the spelling of the name.  Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.  To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose."
    2 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash in Windows Explorer's address bar:
    The same error encountered in #1 is displayed immediately.
    3 - Enter UNC path with or without trailing backslash but contained in double quotes in Windows Explorer's address bar:
    Internet Explorer opens and displays the error:
    "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
    4 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash in Run dialog box:
    An error message immediately appears:
    "<UNC path>
    The specified path does not exist.
    Check the path and then try again."
    5 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash in Run dialog box:
    Same as #4.
    6 - Enter UNC path without trailing backslash but contained in double quotes in Run dialog box:
    Same as #4.
    7 - Enter UNC path with trailing backslash and contained in double quotes in Run dialog box:
    Windows Explorer opens the correct UNC path location and displays the folder contents.  This is the expected behavior for all of these attempts.
    8 - Create Shortcut to UNC path by performing #7 and then dragging the folder icon in Windows Explorer's address bar to either to the desktop or the Favorites section, and then attempt to access the folder via
    the shortcut.
    Same as #7.
    9 - Attempt to create a shortcut to the UNC path using the New Shortcut wizard:
    Unable to successfully create the shortcut, regardless if you add a backslash at the end or enclose the path in double qutoes.  When you press Next after entering the UNC path, you receive the following error:
    "The file <UNC path> cannot be found."
    10 - Disable ABE on the share and repeat all tests:
    All tests with ABE disabled on the share have the same result as #7.  There is no issue whatsoever accessing the desired folder when ABE is disabled.
    Other Notable Behaviors:
    If the aforementioned folder (folder3) contains one or more subfolders (e.g. folder4), you are able to access those subfolders via UNC path directly and then go up one level to folder3 without issue, even when ABE is enabled.  You just cannot access
    folder3 directly via UNC path unless you attempt to access it via the method used in #7 above or a successfully created shortcut.
    Adding a user account directly to the folder3 ACL rather than using group membership makes no difference.
    If access is granted to folder4 instead of folder3 (the fourth folder deep rather than the third), accessing folder4 directly via UNC path is not an issue regardless of ABE status or attempted access method.
    Windows 8 and 8.1 clients have no trouble directly accessing the folder's UNC path via any method.  The unusual, undesirable behavior seen in Windows 7 is non-existent on Windows 8.x clients.
    Systems Involved:
    Client:  Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x86
    Server:  Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in cluster
    Other Details About the Systems:
    Both the client and the file server cluster are in the domain AD DS domain.
    The client and the file server cluster are in different subnets.
    There is no firewall or other packet inspection or compression service/device in between the client and server (not even Windows Firewall).
    Question:
    Is there a way to fix this behavior with Windows 7 clients and ABE enabled on the share so that it works correctly without forcing the clients or server to use SMBv1 or disabling ABE on the shares?

    7-Zip 9.20
    Adobe Flash Player 13 ActiveX
    Cisco WebEx Meetings
    Java 7 Update 51
    It should be noted that I can't repeat the behavior on my test machine again today after some changes were made in our environment.
    Today, I found that someone had modified permissions on the folder to give the group my test account was a member of rights to traverse the folder hierarchy from the root of the share.  Additionally, in testing something with FIPS mode, I ended up reverting
    my virtual machine to an older snapshot.
    After removing the extra permissions that weren't present when I was doing my testing and reverting to the older snapshot, I  am not having issues accessing the real equivalent of folder3 directly in Windows Explorer via DFS UNC path or creating a shortcut
    with the New Shortcut wizard.
    Things have been fundamentally changed and I cannot repeat the behavior on this particular folder.  I will see if I can recreate the same situation on another folder.

  • Full file path in Office 2007 when open or save

    Am not sure i can raise this question here.
    We are using 10gR2 Application server and Windows 7 as a Client. In the client machine we have installed the Microsoft Office 2007.
    From the forms we are trying to open and save (after changes) the files of format Doc/Xls. These files will be stored in separate shared folder accessible through Application server and client.
    Now the issue is when we open/save the file it shows the Entire path (In Saving Window) which should not happen. In previous release of MS office its not like this.
    Please help us "to hide the file path to be displayed to the user". Like changing the registry for Office 2007 or workarounds or new solutions or any other oracle's product.
    Note : Showing the file name is the Office 2007s default behavior.

    The only way to avoid showing this from a Forms point of view would be to not display the open/save file dialog in the first place. In other words, control the opening and saving using your own custom dialogs. Also, be aware that using remote drives (network mapped) may cause problems. Generally speaking, doing this would not be considered supported.
    As for opening documents on the client, there is no need to use the open file dialog if you know the file name and path to that file in advance. You can simply use WebUtil's CLIENT_HOST. So let's say you wanted to open a file named mySales.doc and you knew its location, all you would need to do is this:
    Declare
         my_cmd varchar2(255);
    Begin
         my_cmd := 'rundll32 shell32,ShellExec_RunDLL '|| :t1;
         CLIENT_HOST(my_cmd);
    End;In the above example, +:t1+ is a text field on a canvas. The value would include the path and file name to be opened. Of course this could be a pl/sql variable which you programatically populate or any combination of that. The value value must include the full path (with drive letter) and full file name. If the path or name contains spaces, double quotes may likely be necessary. You will have to test.
    For saving an opened file, you are mostly out of luck from Forms unless you took control of Word/Excel as it was being opened in the first place. For example you likely can open the Office products using OLE or VB or other macro and control what the open and file save dialogs look like or if they are even accessible at all. But this has nothing to do with Oracle or specifically Forms.
    You need to refer to the MS documentation.

  • Can not get he ActiveDocument.SaveAs2 method to work on Word 2013

    For many years I have automated office applications from Visual Basic through the Office Object Model. This has been working fine for all versions from 2003 but
    failed when I upgraded to Office 2013.
    With Word 2013 the SaveAs2 method seems to ignore the parameters and instead always pops up the File SaveAs dialog. Irrespective of save or cancel the method then
    always returns the error 4198.
    The SaveAs2 method works fine in Word 2010 as well as SaveAs in earlier versions. According to the documentation for 2013 it should work the same way for the new
    version, but so far I’m stuck with this problem.
    I’m using Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013 on a Windows 8 system.
    I’ve also tried the SaveAs2 directly in Microsoft Word VBA. The macro below gives exactly the same sad result.
    Public Sub MySave()
    Dim MyName As String
    MyName = "TestDocument.doc"
    ActiveDocument.SaveAs FileName:=MyName, FileFormat:=wdFormatDocument
    End Sub
    I seem to be completely stuck. Does anyone know what the trick is here?

    Hello Dennis,
    Thanks for your effort in trying to reproduce the prompt problem. Since my little macro example is supposed to work
     I’m not surprised that it works at your site. For whatever reason it does not work at mine. What’s causing this is beyond me, but from experience Microsoft products works in mysterious ways. At least it is persistent and fails every time
    exactly as earlier described no matter what I do.
    Here is the history behind this problematic system:
    An Acer laptop with Windows 8 64 bit (Norwegian)  was bought in November 2012. This was intended as a reference system for any potential Win8 issues and also to double as a demo laptop when required.
    The laptop had no Office preinstalled so an Office Home and business 2010 product key (32 bit Norwegian) was bought at the same time. This included a free upgrade to Office 2013 when released.
    Office 2010 (32 bit) was downloaded and installed from
    www.office.com/productkeycard and everything worked as supposed to including office automation.
    A couple of weeks ago I then tried the promised Office 2013 upgrade from My Office/My Account and installed pressing the green Install button found on that page.
    That’s when the problem started. After investigating I found this to be caused by the SaveAs2 problem and reproducible also by a simple Macro in a Word document.
    The installation of Office 2013 had also left the Office 2010 on the system. By opening my new Word test document in 2010 the macro then failed exactly as on 2013 also on 2010.
    I then went to Program and Features and uninstalled Office 2010. Still the same problem in Office 2013.
    Program and features again, clicking change on Office 2013 and was presented by two choices offline or online repair. Tried offline first - same result,
     then online repair, when concluded I was asked to reactivate Office, but same result as before.
    Since your answer I’ve also tried the following:
    Went to Program and features and completely uninstalled my Office 2013.
    Returned to  My Office/My Account and installed Office 2013 again. This did nothing to remedy the problem which remains exactly the same.
    I've also done some further tests as an attempt to figure out what’s going on. I’ve made a new test document
    WEventTest.doc which in addition to my original macro also is catching the DocumentBeforeSave event. The WEventTest project consists of the following:
    Added the following macros in Microsoft Word Objects/ThisDocument
    Private X As New Class1
    Public Sub Register_Event_Handler()
     Set X.appWord = Word.Application
    End Sub
    Public Sub MySave()
      Dim MyName As String
      On Error GoTo Skip
      MyName = "TestDocument.doc"
      ActiveDocument.SaveAs2 FileName:=MyName, FileFormat:=wdFormatDocument
      Exit Sub
    Skip:   MsgBox Err.Number & " " & Err.Description
    End Sub
    Added Class1 to Class Modules containing the following macro
    Public WithEvents appWord As Word.Application
    Private Sub appWord_DocumentBeforeSave(ByVal  sDoc As Document, _
    SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
      Dim intResponse As Integer
      intResponse = MsgBox("Document: " & sDoc.Name & _
      " UI=" & SaveAsUI & " Save the document?", vbYesNo)
      If intResponse = vbNo Then Cancel = True
    End Sub
    I’ve then tried this on both my working Office 2010 system and failing Office 2013 system by first running the macro Register_Event_Handler and then MySave. There is a distinct difference between these system as follows:
    On my working Office 2010 system, everything behaves as expected:
    When calling MySave the DocumentBeforeSave event is fired as expected displaying the messagebox “Document: WEventTest.doc UI=True Save the document?
    Selecting Yes saves the document as TestDocument.doc in the documents folder
    Selecting No cancels the save and the SaveAs2 returns the error
     "4198 Command failed" as expected.
    On my problematic Office 2013 system there is a marked difference in behavior:
    When calling MySave, the first thing that happens is that the Save As prompt is displayed exactly as before with the document name WEventTest and filetype docx.
    The document may then be saved by selecting in the prompt, but whether saving
     or canceling the same thing always happens.
    After closing the prompt, THEN the DocumentBeforeSave event is fired. This is just too late. The message box shows the same content as for Office 2010, but the damage is already done.
    Selecting Yes or No does not make the slightest difference now. The SaveAs2 method always returns the error 4198 Command failed
    I'm not saying this is the first Microsoft problem I’ve encountered, but previously I’ve always been able to find answers by browsing forums and knowledge bases. This is actually the first time I’ve posted a question in any forum.
    I also tried the direct support link you suggested, but that link seems to be broken.
    Please advice.
