Word breaks incorrect when wrapping Greek text

Hi,
I'm trying to use Greek in Illustrator, but I'm getting line breaks in the middle of words. This sort of problem also applies to other languages. Does anyone know how this problem might be resolved?
Note that this is NOT the same thing as turning off hyphenation; I've tried that and it doesn't work. I'm getting breaks in words without hyphens appearing. I've tried with two sorts of Greek fonts: (1) with the Helena font, which replaces Latin glyphs with Greek glyphs, and (2) with a Greek characters in Unicode with a Unicode-compatible Greek font (SBL Greek). With the first option, it seems that Illustrator is causing breaks where it sees non-alphanumeric characters. With the second option, I'm not sure what the problem is; it's breaking in various strange places.
Setting the language to "Greek" in the Character Pallette does not help. (I'm using ancient Greek, and I'm not sure how that might differ from modern Greek).
The same problem has apparently occurred in InDesign, and there is even a solution or two in InDesign (see the 2nd link) involving either setting the language to "No Language" (cannot be done in Illustrator, as far as I can see), or find and replace character styles (again, it seems Illustrator can't do this).

How might this problem be solved? Setting "No Break" in the Character Pallette for all the words would require tedious selection. Its seems that this problem could be solved by allowing "No Language" to be selected, or by adding an option to only break at spaces. TextEdit on Mac OS X does the latter and wraps the text properly.

Ehm ... because InDesign can't load the correct rules for that language? No language = no rules.
Go ahead, try it.
It is something different than unchecking "Hyphenation" -- that works on entire paragraphs only. This will work for any word (or phrase, sentence, paragraph, multiple book set) you don't want to be hyphenated.
[Post-thought:] "No language" may lead to surprising results with some OpenType fonts, as a lot (if not all) of features may be tagged to the language. You might suddenly miss ligatures, for example. So, other than for "Other" languages, you should probably just switch hyphenation off.

Hi!
I have to type Nepali and Hindi words but the words break unnecessarily. Is there any option in InDesign CS4 to control it? I know very well that in Pagemaker these Nepali and Hindi words do not break but in InDesign. Why?
How to fix it? Any idea will be highly respected.
I'm using Vista 32-bit with SP2.

Option #1: do not hyphenate the text at all. You don't say if this is all Nepali/Hindi, or mainly English text with some foreign words -- if there is no English text at all, you could disable hyphenation entirely.
Option #2: Do Not Break. If you are using character styles for the Nepali/Hindi text (for example, because you need to change the font), you could apply No Break to the entire string. Don't do this if it's more than a few words, though (or treat the spaces inbetween differently).
Option #3: Create a GREP style with just No Break in it. Then apply this to Nepali/Hindi text runs only -- http://indesignsecrets.com/search-for-foreign-language-characters-in-text.php shows you how.
I know very well that in Pagemaker these Nepali and Hindi words do not break but in InDesign. Why?
There must be a difference in the default word breaking algorithm. I wouldn't have guessed ID would break text with dedicedly foreign character sets applying its default hypenation rules, but there you go.

How come, when I save a pages file as a word doc, it automatically hyphenates my text?

I'm a college student trying to write essays for my classes, and my professors all prefer word documents. When I go to export my essays from Pages 5, I have no trouble exporting it and saving it as a word file. However, when I open these files, it shows that all of my text has now been set to automatically hyphenate, and I can't find a way to change it without being forced to resave it as a Pages file. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

The fonts aren't supposed to be embedded. They are embedded.
After that, you may have applications proving that they are unable to display chars with the embedded datas but this is an other problem.
The Apple tool creating PDF embed fonts ( in fact a subset restricted to the really used characters ) since it's first delivery.
I bought the Countdown font more than ten years ago, so it may be described as an old one. It's made of two files : a bitmap one and a postscript one. Which is the worst structure given the late versions of the Apple tool.
My guess is that your problems where linked to the fact that Apple continue to create PDFs according to the version 1.3 when many appli are now assuming version 1.6 or higher.

My iPhone 4 is saying words when I am texting??

Well I have had my iPhone 4 for a while and I noticed that last night when I was texting every once and a while in a females voice there would be some words like eff you and so on.. I was kinda shocked so I was woundering if anyone has had this problem.. It is the iPhone 4 not the 4s. The voice sounds similar to the Siri voice on the 4S... So I am woundering what I should do...

If it's just some words, it's most likely that you have Speak Auto-text enabled. It speaks out auto-corrected words.
Turn it off in General> Accessibility> in Vision section

I recently updated my OS to OS X. I had to update my word and powerpoint etc... to 2011 version, but now when I want to open a .doc file made in word 2003 it removes all the text in it! I did not back anything up!

The mouse is controlled by the OS so don't guess any app other than a mouse driver or OS X itself would be able to cause this sort of flicker issue.
Have you seen the following and is it what you are seeing? Maybe you could make a movie (Quicktime is great for this this to make a screen recording) - but not sure how to attach a movie to these discussions as mine is grayed out and can't be selected (to the right of the insert image). What kind of mouse are you using? Is the mouse driver up to date if it's a third party mouse?

Since my iPad IOS was updated to 7.0.4, when I send a Pages doc as a Word docx to my kindle the text is all scrunched up down one side as if the letters are on top of each other. It worked find before and the docx are OK when imported to Word.

Since my iPad 2 was updated to IOS 1.0.4, I cannot send a docx from Pages to my kindle. I can to my PC and open it in Word. But when I send a pages document and select Word as the format, the letters appear on my kindle screen down the left side, printed on top of each other. It worked fine before the upgrade. Any suggestions?

What version of Pages are you using? Did you upgrade to Pages 2.1 for iOS?

Word 2013 Comparison Feature--incorrect marking of existing text

I've got a user who is working with a client on a document. The document has been sent back and forth between our office and the client several times. My user tried to run a comparison on his last sent version against what the client returned.
Word's Compare showed as new text language that had been in my user's last sent version (and the version before that, as well). The text shown as new wasn't, by any means, new.
I ran the comparison on my box, to see if that made a difference. It didn't. Language that has been in the last several versions shows up as new.
Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it? We need accurate comparisons, and doing it old-school, by hand, with a ruler and red pen, won't cut it . . . .

No--the order was correct. More confusingly still, the text that was marked as new was present, in the same location, in both documents. It had been present for the last several versions that everyone was working from.
Any ideas?

Outlook doesn't wrap the text

I have set an option to wrap the text at 40 characters. Just like the picture below

The wrapping only applies to Plain Text messages that you receive. It is not a composing option nor does it apply to already received messages.
It also only applies to messages received over the Internet and not to any internal (Exchange) mail. In addition, it will follow grammar rules as much as possible so it will not break in the middle of a word.

Word breaks in Columns

hi there!
I am using indesign for a large amount of type formatting.
My problem begins when I have a word break and I try to kerm it in to come back to the line above and it doesn't work until it's kerned far too much. When I look at the column, there is plenty of room for the remainder of the word to kern back up, but something prevents it. I checked my text formats and all the insets are set to "0"
Does anyone know what is causing my word breaks to occur when it's clear there is enough room for the words to fit on one line?

Other things to try after Peter's suggestion.
Turn off hyphenation for that paragraph only. Or change hyphenation settings.
Play with Optical vs. Metrics in the kerning field (sometimes one works, sometimes the other.)
Play with justification: make "minimum" and "desired" 99% instead of 100--you can try it on just that line.
You can find all these in the Control Bar. There's a contextual menu at the very right when you toggle the Control Bar to Paragraph, and you should see a list that includes Hyphenation and Justification.

Custom word-breaks possible?

Hello everybody,
is there a way to create a custom word-break setting? In Mac OS 10.6, included options in the "Language & Text" prefpane are "Standard", "English", "Greek" and "Japanese". But none of these settings regard the "_" character as a word-separator, so double-klicking i.e. on the first word in "word1_word2" highlights both words. Nor can you jump from word1 to word2 in a Texteditor using the Alt-Arrow command.
Even if this goes deep into the System level, there has to be a file that's defining what is to be considered as a word-break and what not. Or somewhere there have to be the definitions for the above mentioned settings. Any clues? The ability to modify these setting wouold really help me a lot as I often have to deal with filenames consisting of "dateplus_severalwords" and renaming these files is a pain.

This is probably governed by a system-level .plist file somewhere which you could manually modify. The problem is finding out exactly where it is.....

Greek text

Hi,
I am having troubles setting up a user so that they can type
Greek text into Contribute 2 on Mac Os 10.3. The Kb is set to Greek
text and can successfully enter text in Word etc. but when they try
to type in Contribute with Greek enabled they get Chinese style
chararcters. The same fault also occurs on the input of other
languges except when set to English
The iso codes are set correctly for each page can any one
shed any light on this?

Unfortunately it appears that Contribute 2 cannot recognize
that the kb input has been changed to Greek. It knows that the
language has changed, but can't detect what it's been changed to.
This seems to have been solved in Contribute 3, so CT 2 users who
need to regularly change languages should probably consider
updating to version 3.

Words break at margin - no hyphenation even

I recently opened an old Pages document with Pages 8 and found that all my text is not being treated as words, but just as individual letters. When the space runs out, the next letter in the word goes down to the next line. Here is an example:

So this is what it looks like, and when I type an extra space in there, it just pushes the next LETTER down, and ignores that fact that there are WORDS there. I have tried copying it, and pasting, but it brings the formatting. Any suggestions on settings to check, or a different way to copy and paste it?

Is there anything that distinguishes the spaces between words from the spaces between characters? It seems as though there should be. Find and Replace is the ultimate solution. In the worst case, the spaces between words are multiples of the ones between letters. In this case, Copy the string of characters between two words and paste it into the Find field. In the Replace field enter a unique string such as QQ. Replace all. Now all your word breaks are replaced by QQ. Next Copy one of those things that are now separating your characters and Paste into the Find field. Delete anything in the Replace field so that it is absolutely blank. Double click in the Replace field to make sure that nothing gets highlighted, indicating that it is blank. Replace All.
Now, enter your QQ, or whatever, word separator into the Find field, enter a space into the Replace field, and Replace All.
You should be good to go.
