Word cannot complete the operation because too many files are open

Hello,
I'm working on a 60 pg. document, and when I hit 'save', I get this annoying msg.:
"word cannot complete the operation because too many files are open." I have no other files open, and I am unable to continue to work, because I cannot save - can anyone help? Thanks!

Hello Kristina,
Have you been able to save the file at all?
More than anything, it seems to be a bug when you're trying to save to a server. There's more on the problem here. So what you can also try is simply saving the file to your desktop, or somewhere on your Mac's hard drive. That way you're saving the file locally instead of to a server. If that works, you've at least saved the file and can continue on. Otherwise, read on.
If you can't do it from Word, then at least save your changes from another application. Open TextEdit. You should get a blank file on the desktop. Make sure it's set as a rich text file. You'll know just be looking at it. If you see a ruler and other buttons at the top of the TextEdit document window, it's rich text. If not, make it rich text by pressing CommandShiftT.
Copy and paste your entire Word text into the TextEdit window. Save the TextEdit document to the desktop. Now that you've at least gotten your work saved, you can try some other things.
If you're not trying to work on the file from, or save it to a remote server, then don't worry about the first workaround. It doesn't apply. Number two was poorly worded by John. He seems to assume everyone knows what RH is. I had to look it up. It means Remote Home folder. So open the Word preferences and click on FIle Locations. Highlight the first choice, Documents, and click on the Modify button. Choose any location you want on your Mac's hard drive. Click "Choose" and close the preferences. Can you now save the document to the folder you defined as the default save location?
Spotlight is that little magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your screen by the time/date. There are a few methods to disable Spotlight. What John is saying that if the Mac is spending a lot of time indexing your drives at the same time you're trying to save your Word document, the intense processing time to index may be keeping Word from saving.
If you've managed to at least save your file as a rich text TextEdit document, then shut all of your applications down and restart your Mac. Launch Word and open the TextEdit file. You may lose some formating if you've done tables or other things TextEdit can't save in Word's original form.

  • "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [name of iMovie file] could not be read or written (Error Code 26)

    Hi all,
I have an iMovie project in iMovie HD 6.0.3. (Mac OS 10.5.8)
It plays, but I cannot copy the file (including saving it to a flash drive). I get either a message
"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [name of
iMovie file] could not be read or written (Error Code 26)" or the
message "A project file is missing. The file [name of the QuickTime
movie inside the project.dv] couldn't be opened and is being skipped."
This happened suddenly, I was able to save a backup version numerous
times while working on the project.
I followed some of Karl Petersen's advise on apple discussions. I opened
the package contents, and everything seems to be there. The source file
(original QuickTime movie) is there and can be opened and played. I
replaced the current project file with the backup in the package
contents, but that did not change anything. I was able to export the
movie timeline into a new project as a single clip, but would like to be
able to copy the current project.
    Thanks for any ideas..

Make sure all drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended". (Journalling preferred, but not necessary).

I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.

  • Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in.....

    Hello everyone.
I burned about 10 TDK DVDr's about a month ago. I didn't get any errors while burning them and put them directly into cd cases to prevent them from getting scratches or marks. I just took them out to copy the files back to my Macbook. As soon as i start to drag and drop the files, the dvd player starts reading the files, copies some of them, and about 20 seconds in to the copy it powers down and displays the following message. This is true for all 10 of the dvds i burned. It copies to my hard drive for about half a minute...and then the drive powers down.
"Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in (NAME OF CD) could not be read or written (Error Code-36)."
Does anybody have any suggestions? I'd hate to think that all of the dvds are coasters now because i have data on them.

    hi easeupjosh,
did you ever get help with your DVD-Rs?
I am having the same problem and was wondering if there's someway I can salvage the data on my DVDs?
    thanks

  • External HD issue. Finder cannot complete the operation because some data..

Last night I had a drive throw the error "finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "<file>" could not be read or written. Error code-36". I thought it was a bad disk. Then tonight I plugged in a flash drive, formatted it on the machine and now I am getting the same error on that disk as well. Any thoughts???

Yes, you can have bad blocks or other physical damage on a usb drive, the same as a firewire, or eSATA. Just because you can reformat the drive, doesn't mean the drive is okay. You reformat, yet the problem recurs. That is a sign of a bad drive. If it were an OS issue then the reformat should fix it.
You might want to check the drives with a utility from Prosoft called DriveGenius It's the "Swiss Army Knife" of utilities, including the ability to repartition "on the fly" (A little scary for my tastes). But Prosoft is a trusted software manufacturer. Downloaded the trial (it has more bells & whistles than you can believe) But the trial will run all hardware tests without the repair feature, and give you a report.
Also, you can download and use Applejack for repair.

    Hi,
What Office version are you using?
Please try to start Microsoft Word in Safe Mode if it helps, following steps for Word 2010, the steps for Word 2007 are similar:
Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to
    Microsoft Office.
Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Microsoft Word 2010.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Office program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Word program:
Click File menu, click Options >
Add-ins, click Go button in the Manage: COM Add-ins.
Check if there has any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.
Close the Microsoft Word and restart it.
Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart Microsoft Word, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
    - You may also check Save Folder and Word Default Save Folder permission, make sure user account has Full Control and Modify permission.
    Best regards.

  • The Finder cannot complete the operation?  Backup stops midway

Very often in OSX when I'm copying a disk or large number of files (backing up) I get this message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because (x) could not be read or written. (Error code -36)"
When I hit OK, the backup stops at that point.
I'll delete the offending file and sometimes that works, but many times the same thing will happen with a different file again.
Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it?

a great response. I've been having the same problem . Using copy for Backup because it seemed easier than learning a backup program, and hard disks are so big, now. The bigger question is what to do about broken files. In my case, I think the problem was interaction between OS 10.4.11 and Itunes 6.0.1 which I hadn't upgraded to 6.0.5, and that's all my hardware can do. I've rolled back to 10.4.10, and reinstalled Ipod software and Itunes 6.0.5 -not sure if the problem is solved. Wanted to backup 1st before a major test.
But adding podcasts to Ipod leads to hang up, force quit, hang up, turn off power. *So what to do about files that stop copy* (especially when they seem to be hidden, (aside from using Carbon Copy Cloner)
    i.e. spotlight can't find them (i.e. 0F54AE5Dd01),
or old versions don't seem to help (Abstract.dplmageCache).
are they a problem? I've deleted some, but this abstract file seems to freeze shutdown when it's not there. and I can't delete what I can't find.

  • Finder cannot complete the operation... (Error code -36)

    Hello,
I'm trying to share a file between my new iMac and my PowerBook via file sharing (Finder, Airport 802.11 n). Both computers are on 10.5.3. The iMac is a brand new one, so it's a fresh install. The PowerBook has a new harddrive and is a fresh install as well. Both are on the most current software.
Here's what happens: Both computers are visible in each respective Finder, but files can only be shared from the iMac towards the PowerBook, not vice versa. When trying to connect from the PowerBook to the iMac, it tries to connect but to no avail, then I receive an error message "Connection Failed".
Next thing I tried was to connect via Finder/Connect to Server and typing in the afp:// address (looked it up at System Preferences/Sharing/File Sharing). It again tries to connect, then I receive the error message: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://192.xxx.x.xxx" could not be read or written (Error code -36)".
Now I'm puzzled and don't know what to do. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

And by the way - after trying this for two days, it JUST worked! Not sure why or how or for how long, but this seems like massive bully.

  • The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written. Error code -36

    Hi,
Installed a new startup drive and cannot access my photos. While copying/pasting iPhoto library from old to new drive I get,
The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written.
Getting help from Apple senior advisor caused more problems, was unable to boot up for a while. Back up now but still can't transfer iPhoto Library.
    Anyone seen this before?
    Thank you

Linc and Larry, could you please have a look at this thread? Sorry, it is in German:
Re: Fehlermeldung beim Verschieben von iPhoto
The OP is trying to copy the iPhoto library to an external drive and getting "The finder can't complete the operation because some data on iPhoto Library can't be read or written. Error code -36". This happens even when copying to the same drive.  The destination drive is correctly formatted.
The Console is showing a message I don't understand:
03.06.14 18:26:40,990 Finder[1154]: NSFileCoordinator: Sending of a providerCheckin message was interrupted. Details: Connection interrupted
    Any idea what this means?

  • The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "1-04 Time.m4a" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)" Can't fix

I am trying to backup some .m4a files from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive and suddenly tonight I am getting "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “1-04 Time.m4a” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)". I have searched for fixes but none of them are working. I have backed up this folder many times before with no issues. Any help is greatly appreciated.

By the way, I have repaired disk permissions on main drive and repaired both the internal hard drive of my MacBook and the external drive. No luck.

  • Thunderbolt file copy - the Finder can't complete the operation because some data in  can't be read or written.

I have a Promisse 4 disk Thundebolt enclosure. To this I did install 4 new 2TB Samsung disks. (it had 512GB disks before). After the disks were replaced a randomly get messages like "the Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in  can’t be read or written". If I retry it sometimes work - sometimes dont work.
To close down on the problem I have mounted one disk as a single partition, and it still happen. Then I take the disk out, mount it in an USB enclosure and I have no problem. (I have more than once written the disk completly full using USB without any problem).
To me it seems like OSX has some weird problem with these big disks on thunderbolt. Any ideas?

Pretty sure it`s not the promise. It could of course be the FW in the Promise having problem with 2TB disks or the Samsung brand in some way.
Had 4 Toshiba disks in it until quite recently. No problem. They were running in RAID 0 for about 6 months.
I have right now 2 x 2TB disks in a RAID 0 in it with no problem. So - I am down two 2 possible answers
    a) OSX don´t handle copy correct (or actually finder - have not tested cp from command line)
    b) I have been unlucky and got 2 similar disks that have the same problem (2 of 4 disks - all brand new 3 weeks ago)
The one thing a find most annoying is OSX lack of telling what`s going on. The "Failed to read or write" error is stupid - tell me what`s the problem. Like "could not write to block XXXX". An os is also supposed to re-allocate bad blocks. However I see no way in OSX to see number of bad blocks etc. Is this possible?
When googling the error -36 it seems like this is something that has been troubling OSX for some time, but not that many users that have problems after 10.7 was released.
I think what I will do is to send in the disk for replacement - that will at least give some answers.

Thanks for your analyst and reply, I run the command as you suggested and checked accordingly to Task Manager, but seems none of them indicates a firewall or anti-virus.

The names on the file are all Uppercase
When I try to copy the Aperture file, it copies about 70% of the file (it's about 33GB in size), and halfway through I get this error.
I'm able to copy 99.99% of all of the images if I open the Aperture Folder using the "show package contents" under the backups using finder (Time Machine Backups>Backups.backupdb>CQ Macbook Air>2012-04-30-070933>HD.....>Pictures>Aperture Library). The only file I can't copy is that picture, which I'm totally ok with deleting, but Finder won't delete it for me. If nothing else works, I could copy the individual masters and re-create the folders, however I'd hate to do this as I would have to go through 10,000+ pics
