Word completion in Mail?
Is there a way to turn on word completion in Mail, like it works in TextEdit?
In TextEdit, when I hit escape I get a list of words that appear earlier in the text to choose from.
Very helpful for lengthy words (especially in German ;-) ).
But it does not work in Mail's compose window :-(
Any ideas or hints?
TIA,
Gabriel.
Sorry, I probably wasn't clear.
What I want is this:
I type "chauf" then hit the escape

I am trying to download a word document from mail into pages and I keep getting an unknown error message, are there special settings for this? Any help much appreciated!
Not there aren't any special settings for this. You just use the Open In feature to save the document into Pages. You could have a font in the document that Pages doesn't like, maybe something that you copied and pasted from somewhere into the document that went corrupt. But there is nothing special about the way that you save a Word document into Pages. You save it like you save any document or file into a compatible app.

Maybe I am missing something, but I can't figure out how to use word completion. It can be turned on or off from settings > text editors > word completion
With "prediction" on and "word completion" off, inserting words saves typing: the predicted word is displayed in a blue bubble, tap the intended word and it is inserted into the text.
When "prediction" and "word completion" are both on, the word is also completed inline. But I can not select the word that was completed inline. What is the purpose of "word completion"?
Thank you.
Solved!
Go to Solution. When using Word Completion, you need to tap on the screen in the writing area and slide it a bit to left or right. The auto-completed word will be selected and published.
However, i don't like the completion. I keep it always turned off. -
Out of the blue, am unable to open Word attachments in Mail with the usual double click. (Get a longwinded error message)
Need to right click, select open with, and select Microsoft Word. Have been using Microsoft Office for Mac 08 for years.
I have reinstalled the Office software. A couple of tech people have been unable to fix it. Any suggestion?? debsuemyPlease re-post in the Office for Mac Product Forums .

Hi folks.
Not after code, as I am hoping to write this myself. I am after suggestions from anyone that has been there before or has a bit more experience with this problem and ideas for me.
Many of you guys are probably using an IDE with code completion. I'm not trying to write a code completor just yet, but a simple word completor.
My current plan is to use an embedded java database (derbyDB) in the application (lets just say a JTextArea in a frame). The database has heaps of words in it. As the person types, it sits there in the background with a thread that listens to the stuff being typed and queries for similar words (SQL) in the database and adds it to the text area in a highlight.
I'm pretty fine with all the text area stuff, but does the above plan sound fine for what I am trying to do?
Is there any problems people see with the above design? My biggest concern was using the key listener to figure out what they typed into the box... I am worried that if you have a fast typer, it will freeze the characters from coming on screen while the database is looking them up...
I have looked all over google and through these forums, but cannot find anything (hell- im not even sure if word completion is the correct term for what I'm trying to do...). I just know that many programs do it, and wanted to know how.
Interested to hear any suggestions about this problem.
Jason.Aha... Queues... That would be a better approach. Thanks. I had no idea about using these!
i noticed you also made reference to a database. So I'm guessing the database is the way to go.
I wasn't particularly worried about the grammar side of things, but now that you mentioned it, it does seem like a big problem, ie which word to complete in which situation in a sentence. It almost sounds like a compiler but for english!!! lol Perhaps I should limit the completor to technical words (anatomical words is what I am mainly interested in),
ie user types "stern"
possible completions are sternum, sternomastoid, sternocleidomastoid
when user types ctrl-space (as you say) these words appear in a drop down box.
Thank you for your suggestion about queues. I will learn about these now.

Any facility in Cocoa for word completion?
I'm looking for some interface to the Mac OS dictionary, with the goal of being able to get a list of words which match a basic expression. For example: asking for words that are 5 characters long that match the form sh_.
Feature useful for suggesting words to complete a crossword puzzle.
I've found NSSpellChecker, but couldn't find what I was after there – just suggesting similar spelt words.
There is the feature in various applications for doing word completion, and am wondering if this is the area I should be looking?
Thanks,

It sounds like the NSSpellChecker "completionsForPartialWordRange:inString:language:inSpellDocumentWithTag:" method might help.
I'm not sure if it will handle missing characters at the beginning of a word.
Using regular expressions might help. You will need a dictionary of words to search from. You can use the dictionary's spell check dictionary for that. You will also need a tool that can do regular expressions. Unfortunately, there isn't good support in Cocoa for regular expressions. Perl and some command line tools like sed and awk are much better at that. -
Word Completion Stopped Working
Hi,
My word completion stopped working on my Macintosh. I tried shift-space, but nothing happens. Anyone know how to resolve this?
Thanks!I had to create a new workspace and project, then copy all my code into the new application. I was able to import my skins, scripts and assets into the new workspace. I should have remembered this because it happened before. I was able to search Google for some hints on how to solve this issue.

Word completion in Apple Pages
Hello,
I am a new Mac owner. I have been using the free word processor OpenOffice a lot recently, and one of the features it has is word completion (if you use a word that is more than nine letters long, it will offer to complete it for you if you press Return or, alternately, Tab). I read somewhere that this feature is available on Pages; does anyone know how to activate it?The only thing I know of is the Automatically use the spell checker suggestion. It is found in the Pages preferences > Auto correction

About word prediction (word completion).
Hi there,
I wonder that if the word completion can be done in Oracle Form.
Say there is a Text filed, when user does several enter queries, when he/she
types in something, Word prediction/word completion will prompt the query history words.
Is this possible in ORACLE Form 11g?
Regards,
PhilHello,
Just a word to say that this Java Bean does not do the exact job you need, in a way that it does not manage any "historical" data you entered in the past, reason why I did not point it to you.

Onscreen keyboard - word completion
maybe i am missing something, but I can't figure out how to use word completion using the onscreen keyboard. the word appears but I don't know how to select it...... maybe I am dumb? i have tried everything. searched the manual and the discussion threads with no luck.
Solved!
Go to Solution. Can't expplain the difference because I have always only used it with both on and it works well for me. I start typing a word and as soon as I see the correct completed word appearing, I tap on it to complete. You should also consider using Swype on the N9. It is very good.

Two completely independent mail accounts?
I would like to setup two completely independent mail accounts. So far, when I setup two accounts, the mailboxes are visible to both accounts, and the inboxes are merged (as well as being independently viewable). I have tried requiring password entry every time for login. In my case, I would like two separate accounts, with full invisibility to each other. One is a work based VPN account, and the other is an AOL account.
Is there a way to do this? There used to be a shareware program called MailSwitch, that has been discontinued, that might have accomplished this.
Thanks
Mikeindeed i do not believe that is possible without a third party plug in, and i do not know of a third party plug in that would do just that in leopard mail.
how about creating a second user on your mac and have one email account in mail.app under one user and the second email account in mail.app under the second user. it is a work around and you would have to toggle back and forth between users, but it is better than not being able to achieve your goal if important to you.
hope this helps -
This is my first Blackberry, the Tour. I have it with Verizon. I used to have a Treo. The one thing I miss is the word completion... Do the Blackberries have "word completion" or anythign like this? I hate typing out the entire word. Thanks for the advice!
I used to have it on my old phone and I totally miss it. I'm a novice, but I researched it and looks like it doesn't not exist for BB. People seem to work around it by incorporating it inot their spell check (ie whenever you [purposely] type 'srp' it'll fix it by putting surprise). That's annoying. Hopefully someone proves me wrong cuz I too hate typing out the whole word.

Word 2004 corrupts Mail and hard drive
I believe that Word 2004 is corrupting my mail accounts as well as my hard drive. Here is the senario: Mail is up and running, you click on Word and the spinning rainbow ball comes up and locks up the computer so that you have to manually shut the computer down. Upon restarting the computer Mail deletes our ATT mail accounts but automatically installs our .mac mail account which was previously not set up in Mail. Next when I try to access Word the computer freezes and I must manually shut the computer down again and upon startup only the gray screen with the Apple logo is as far as the computer goes. Next I insert the Leopard installation disk and using Disk Utility I perform "Verify Disk" but get this error message "Incorrect number of thread records". Repair disk is unable to fix error so I must erase the hard drive and reinstall Leopard. Luckily Time Machine has worked great. I am wondering if anyone has had such severe problems using Word with Leopard? My version of Word and Excel worked fine before the Leopard installation. Thanks for any input.
Typically, yes. Erasing the drive should "fix" a directory problem simply because the directory is what gets erased. If you really want to insure complete obliteration of all data on the drive, you need to "overwrite" the drive. Disk Utility provides a way to do this by selecting the "Write zeros" option which completely overwrites the drive with (what else?) zeros. I am a true believer in this because, even though it's supposed to be technically impossible, I have had experiences in which a "fresh" installation had settings already "in place" that could only have come from existing data on a supposedly erased drive. So anytime I get to the point where I need to completely erase a drive, I always use the write zeros option.

Why can't I open word docs from mail anymore?
Am on 10.8.2 on Macbook Air and doc and docx attachments tell me to choose application to open the doc with and won't open when I choose "Word"
These used to be opened automatically by Word, not I have to manually choose Pages as the only option

Don't see how I can choose the file from within Word as it's not saved anywhere?
I have now discovered if I drag the file from mail on to the WORD icon in the doc it will open....seems much clumsier than the old option of clicking on the file to open it
Opening attached pics seems to require the same action as well using iphoto.
A bit of a step back in my opinion....
Save the word file from the email to your Mac (have you never saved an attachment before)?
Post back when you can do as I asked you to.
And remember that we are trying to find out what is wrong, don't be so snappy!
haha...point taken. Wasn't feeling 'snappy' when I typed it, not intended as such...!
If I save it somewhere as you suggested I can then open it
also, as I mentioned if I drag the doc onto WORD in the dock it opens that way as well -
Mail keeps crashing How to completely reinstall Mail
Hi,
My mail application keeps crashing. When I try to open mail, the app crashes. I store all my mail in the cloud so I am not worried about my messages, but I can not delete the old files and re-install the application.
I have reinstalled OSX Mountain, deleted the plist file in settings and deleted the Mail folder in library/mail/v2 all to no avail.
My question is, how can I completely delete all mail files and settings, reinstall the mail app and start from scratch.
ThanksTo copy between different accounts could be easy to use an USB plug and do it step by step while changing the user account
Mail.app is in the Application folder (of both Accounts).
The Mail folder (to copied with its full content) is under Library of each account.
Do you know how to go to Library ? Open Finder.. selct Go and in the list of targets Library will appear as soon as you press option.
Before coping the Mail folder from the new account to yours you may rename your Mail Folder to Mail-old in a way you will not overwrite it. You will delete it after being sure anithing works.
