Word displacement

I am hoping this is just something I can turn off. I have a text box where the word "dates" starts the third line. When I drop (shift return) the last word on the third line "status", "dates" moves up to the end of the second line. Also not sure why "dates" was not at the end of the second line to begin with as there was room. I am quite particular about my text and am not terribly happy that text other than what I manipulate is moving around (doesn't inspire confidence in the software). I have looked through settings, etc (note: there is no object runaround, just text in a normal text box).
Anyone have suggestions on what is happening?

Oh are you a Mac user?  I often forget that Enter and Return are different. I meant "manual line break, however it is that you produce it with your keyboard or mouse or whatever." In general I always advise against the use of the manual line break to control the rag or composition of a paragraph. I've spent a considerable chunk of time removing them in order to produce a document that will e.g. easily make the transition to HTML or ePub or content-management system or translation memory database or whatever. The point is that a manual line break is for me a less repurpose-able, more "final" method of affecting wrap than is something that prevents a linebreak, like a nonbreaking space. These considerations may not apply in your case, but I'm sure that they apply at least some to the sixty-odd people who have already read this thread, which is why I'm soapboxing about it.
Control is only being taken away from you if you are unaware of your options - I switch from the Paragraph Composer to the Single-Line Composer sometimes, myself.  I have a set of scripts to which I've assigned keyboard shortcuts so I can switch composers on the fly, which I do all the time (mostly from Adobe Paragraph Composer to World-Ready Paragraph Composer). I turn off auto-correct on almost every single application I use, usually because it hampers me instead of helping. But this is a case where, if you care about good paragraph composition (and you obviously do!) you should consider it.

  • (When profiling)ld.so.1 error: relocation error: R_SPARC_WDISP22...symbol _cerror: value 0x36dc48 does not fit

I'm using Solaris 7/Forte C++ 6 update 1. This is a large program consisting of a dozen or so .so's.
The problem only occurs when compiled/linked -xpg or -g for profiling.
From what I've read, it sounds like the compiler/linker has not reserved enough space to store the actual address offset at load/relocation time. However, I can't find any way in which I can control what size it chooses.
Anyone seen this/solved this one before?
    Thanks...Steve
    [email protected]

The R_SPARC_WDISP22 is a relocation type.
It is normally used for branch instructions.
The error message is probably indicating
that there is a branch instruction
    that cannot reach its target.
    The target is probably _cerror.
On SPARC, the longest branch instruction
only reaches 22 bits of word displacement,
    or -2**23 bytes or -8MBytes.
You can use elfdump -r to see the relocation
information for the *.o files you are linking.
Find one that has that relocation.
Then find the code that is referencing _cerror.
Perhaps there is some strange code
that is trying to branch out of a routine?
I think normally, the compiler will
    resolve all the branch relocations,
because the branches and the branch
    targets should all be
    within the same function.
So, I'm a bit puzzled about
why you are getting a link time error
    and not a compile-time error.
In any case, it could be a compiler bug.
We've fixed some like this in the past,
but there could be some we missed.
It looks like you are using an older compiler
(of couse this message is old too),
so you might try upgrading to a newer version.
The newest one in Sun Studio 12 update 1.

  • How to make a rasterized word look like it was written with dirt?

Im trying to make an image where this word looks like it is written in dirt on the sidewalk.  Iv' already taken a pile of dirt and created a clip mask out of it but it doesnt look natural enough.  How do I do this so it looks realistic? And this is a graphic not font and I am using photoshop cs6. Thank you.

I'll just add a little footnote to the above, while I'm thinking about it.  One problem with layer styles - especially complex ones like Bevel & Emboss, is that you have limited control of the different aspects of the effect.  I didn't use Bevel & Emboss in the above example because the highlights were too strong, and made it look wrong.
A way round this is to right click the effect and choose 'Create layers'.  This breaks up the effect into one or more layers, so you can reduce, say, the highlight without effecting the shadow.
I think if I was trying to do a stand out job, I'd use a finer font, so it looked like it had been drawn with a stick, and I'd use a combination of Bevel and Emboss layer style to get the depth, but I'd also use JJ's idea of a displacement map clipped to the text layer, to roughen the edges realistically, and add texture to the bottom of the indented text.
An alternative is to find a suitable texture, and save it as a Pattern.  That would make it available to use as a 'Texture' in the Bevel Emboss sub options. The beauty of this is that the texture works very much like a Displacement map with depth and lighting effects.  In fact, I think that might be the easiest way to go about it.

  • No longer able to save Word documents - older Macbook

When I have tried to save multiple Word documents recently, I get this message:
"Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following:
    *Free more memory
*Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged"
I have 60GB of free space, but to be sure, I deleted 30 old documents and still no dice. I have no idea what write-protected means.
    Thanks.

"as you work. Consequently, if working in Word for a long period of time, and frequently "saving" Word will hit its quota of saves and refuse to save anything else. The error messages ("too many documents open" or "disk full") are bogus and obviously not true in the real sense, but serve to worry the user and displace blame away from ms...
Thus it appears that this bug hits cautious users the hardest - as "saving early and saving often" is precisely what makes it happen. You might say "once burned, twice shy, thrice slapped in the face by microsoft."
The solution when the problem hits is to simply copy your changes since the last save (possibly paste them elsewhere), shut down MS Word, reopen it, then just paste your changes into the document, which will still be saved in its previous incarnation. If editing a document, this can be a bit more annoying as the changes might not be a paragraph or two, but rather a whole pile of little changes spread over an entire paper..." (TheMac19)
Hope that helps anyone in the future!

  • [CS4] Word Import severely broken/Interim Solution

As I said before on this topic,
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The Word import has gone from already rather bad to worse with one of the upgrade patches. ...
-- read this for the symptoms.
I finally found a work-around. Strangely enough it was one that has been rattling in my head for a while, but I can't for the life of me remember where I got that idea!
The problem lies in Word's Bookmarks. These are not recognized by InDesign CS4/CS5 Import filter (but they are by CS3 and earlier!) and thus each one of them creates a mis-match in the following text, accumulating up to the end of each paragraph (or possibly the next one, it's too idiotic to check for those fine details). Only at the very end of the document, ID suddenly realizes it has a few text fragments left over, and decides to tack them on to the end.
    With results like this:
and yes, these text fragments belong somewhere in the middle of the document! Even worse, here you can see it's text that's been displaced, but it also happens with pure text formatting. Bye-bye smooth text import, hello Mr. Angry Client!
I reported this issue to Adobe "Support" (hum hum), complete with test documents, and got the quite unexpected answer that it was unrealistic to expect "perfect import" because, well, my page size was different in InDesign, my margins were different, the paragraph spacing doesn't work the same as in Word ... so it was no wonder the text was "not the same after importing".
Ahhhh ... now I got that out of my system: the solution is to remove all Bookmarks in the Word file prior to importing. For Windows, you can make a small VB Macro:
    Sub KillBookmark()
        While ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Count > 0
            ActiveDocument.Bookmarks(1).Delete
        Wend
    End Sub
but for OS X you have to take the manual route: go to menu Insert, select "Bookmark", point to one, select "Delete". Repeat until bored to death.
Now that I have done the work Adobe programmers should have done (that is, finding out what the d*** problem actually was) and present them with a Ready-to-Implement Solution (revise the code that handles bookmarks): WHEN WILL THEY FIX IT!?!?
Please don't say "CS6". I'm still on CS4, and since it got broken in that version, I must insist on a fix for CS4.

    [Jongware] wrote:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Just where did you send the report and test files? There's no way to attach files to the bug report form, so were you talking to some contract script-reading idiot who passes himself off for tech support these days, or did one of the engineering team actually get back to you and ask for the files? I suspect not the latter, and I can offer some suggestions for whom to email. In fact, I think I may put a bug in someone's ear now.
Customer support, by e-mail. They *did* ask for files and I sent a whole bunch of them, original Word files, ID files to show how they got imported, and even separate screen shots of the problem pages with circles highlighting the broken parts.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
As far as getting a patch for CS4, it's always nice to see a romantic dreamer.
But Adobe broke it in CS4. I noticed it, working with CS4. I complained about it after noticing it in CS4, and I filed a customer support case (w/due documentation) for my version: CS4. It's Adobe's own fault, as they have such a bad customer support service that it cannot readily respond to complaints about the current version!
Sorry Peter, this has been discussed before extensively, and Adobe never looked into it before. Remember me asking if this was ever solved in CS5?
If you haven't escalated your case with customer support to a manager and then that manager's highest-level manager, like the DIRECTOR of customer support, that's a good thing to put into action. From there, insist that the case goes to the highest-level manager or DIRECTOR of technical support, so you can register it as a bug that will get attention, and at no charge to you for the tech-support call.
Allt this might just be a way to put makeup on an ugly and unchangeable situation, but, since you've already invested so much effort, why not give it one more try by depositing your investment on the highest-level person's desk?

  • MS word like WordArt in Flash AS3

How can i have WordArt like Microsoft Word in Flash using AS3?

For curved text, you would need displacement map filter. It can give you arc text effect but you need to play with it. The example at Adobe actually does smoething like that: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/filters/Displacem entMapFilter.html.
Besides this you would either need some advanced mathematical calculations to manipulate the bitmap of the text field into required shape. You would need to calculate angles and rotations for each character in the word and then position them accordingly.

  • Turbulent displace help CS6

    Hey everyone,
I'm trying to do an effect with words coming out of a coffee cup and onto the screen. I'm looking for a "tornado-like" look when they leave the cup and for them to end up normal once they reach the background. I have tired using the turbulent displace effect, but I can't seem to control it precisely.

  • Malicious or not? Message popped up: Mozilla security found (something like too much, forget exact word) activity on your computer so it will do a fast scan of system file. With OK button.

I was looking at youtube.com, which always tells me my browser is not supported and recommends I download Firefox, but that is what I was using, so I went to Firefox to check for updates. (I think I also had freecycle.org open.) Then this message popped up in a new page: Mozilla security found (something like "too much", forget exact word) activity on your computer so it will do a fast scan of system file. There was an OK button. The page address was: http://update17.stegner.ce.ms/index.php?Q7Lhl9ShbRxGJXpkM1VLSi4ZE8H4pTedoVPySgeppM3VpC+thEspcFG7qxHgn1pdsC2h5ygPGWI3t5hXqMzL9EQaZZ3J1e3CKXgCb0Qp. I did not click OK but copied the link and closed the window which closed the internet. I have never seen this before and would like to know if it is really Mozilla or possibly something malicious. Thank you.

Good catch. That almost certainly is an invitation to download malware.
There are a lot of infected web sites pushing "fake antivirus" software. If you have any doubts about whether your system might have become infected, you can supplement your regular security software with these two highly regarded scanners:

I need to convert PDF file to Word Document, so it can be edited. But the recognizing text options do not have the language that I need. How I can convert the file in the desired of me language?

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
    Do cleanup.

I have never had this problem with Word before and spell check has always been fine. What should I do?

Since word is made by Microsoft you should post your question on their own forums for their Mac software as Apple Communities only provide support for Apple products:

Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
Anyone know if this is a known issue?
Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • Report Generation MS-Word always give error

    Hi
I am using LV 2012 and MS Office 2010.
I am using report generation toolkit to have a customised output report.
When I specify output format as excel, I am able to get the desired result but when I specify output format as word, it always throws an error. I checked running the NI examples meant to give output in word but they all fail while the excel reports are perfect.
Please find attached an error code for one of the example Sample Report(word).vi

We need to see the code in order to say "Here is the error" or "Try doing it this way".  It also gives us something to try, ourselves.  Do you know how to make "snippets", which are .PNG "pictures" of your code that you can simply put into the message using Insert Image?  We can then drag this image into a LabVIEW Block Diagram, and voilà, working code!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The first thing to try is to repair your hard drive. Boot from your install disc, choose your language, and then navigate to Disk Utility from the menu bar. Go to the First Aid tab and select your hard drive and then "Repair Disk". Repair it until there is nothing left to repair.
When done, you might want to update your software if you are still running 10.6.3--I believe that 10.6.5 is out now.
    Good luck!
