Word docs open in Abiword

Not sure if this is the right place to ask about this, but here goes. When I download a Microsoft Word document, it appears on my desktop with the Abiword icon and opens in Abiword when I click it. This also happened with a Microsoft Word doc that was sent to me in an email. Any idea what's going on?

.doc files are assigned to Abiword at this moment. To change it, highlight one of the files and right click to select Get Info. In the Get Info window go down to the Open with: pane and use the dropdown menu to select the app you wish to assign to open .doc files. Then press the Change All... button.

Hi There:  I am having a problem where pdf files on the web (i.e., links in a Word doc) open after an extended time and only as gobbldygook ( a file containing a series of characters and letters that make no sense).  This also happens for another Mac user coworker in my office, while the PCs don't have this problem...  Any help/suggestions for a fix would be most appreciated!

Just adding more info - MacBookPro running 10.5.8 and using Safari as the browser.  The problem comes and goes - sometimes the linked Word files will open OK, n others its just a strring of crazy characters...

  • Word docs opening only in AppleWorks

Tiger came with Microsoft Test Drive software installed.
So, when I went to open an old Word doc, instead of launching my version of Word 2000, it launched Word 2005 (the test drive). I went to the Get Info panel and toggled it to select my version Word 2000 as the default application for all Word docs, but it kept reverting back to the new Test Drive version. I could tell by the new logo. Anyway, I finally trashed the entire Test Drive folder, but it still tried to revert to Word 2005. In exasperation, I toggled to Appleworks and set it as the default Application hoping to then switch to Word 2000. But now all Word docs are opening in Appleworks and when I switch the default to Word 2000, it won't "take".
I've tried every possible way to switch this within the Get Info pane, so I'm wondering is there some re-set somewhere or, better yet, some other way of setting a default application?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
P.S. I can INDIVIDUALLY set Word docs to open in Word 2000, but I have hundreds of Word docs and don't want to have to set their permissions individually.

Try instead of trashing Word reinstalling the test drive from the restore disks, and then running the uninstaller that comes in the Microsoft Office folder of the test drive.

  • While typing a doc in Word, the spinning wheel appeared and froze the Word document.  I had another Word doc open at the time.  I tried to force quit, but it didn't work.  I would like to save it before losing my work, but the spinning wheel blocks me.

While creating a Word doc, the spinning wheel appeared and won't go away.  Another Word doc was open at same time.  How do I get this fixed while saving my work?

    Basically, you don't.
The 'spinning wheel' is simply an indicator that an operation is taking longer than it should. It doesn't say anything about why, or even if it's an error or not. If it's in Word, it could be that the app is hung, or it could be that it is waiting for some kind of user input, or input from another app. (My bet would be on the former.) You could go into Activity Monitor, identify the process that's making it wait, kill it, cross your fingers and hope that it would generate an error that would cause Word to return control to the user (you). If you had the expertise, that is, and the moon were in right quadrant.
Realistically, your only option is to force-quit Word. Once that is done, if AutoRecovery was on, then, with luck, you could recover much of your work. Here
    <http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahnd.html>
you'll find a quick overview of AutoRecovery and how it works.
If it wasn't on (it should be on by default), then you're out of luck. Chalk it up to experience, turn it on, and back to the grindstone.

  • Word docs open Acrobat Pro version 7

    Hello,
I have a small problem I thought I could fix without bothering anyone here.
I used the 'create PDF' in a Word doc and now everytime I double click to open a Word doc it launches Acrobat. I figured there was something in 'preferences' that would take care of the issue, but I can't seem to find it.
Can someone tell me what and where to make the change to fix this?
    TIA,
    Greg

  • WORD docs opening without "chime" sound

Another esoteric problem. If I click on a WORD doc in the finder to open it or want to launch the program and/or the document from the Apple "Recent Items" menu the program and/or document open up silently.
However, if I open up the same document from within the already opened WORD program I hear that nice welcoming chime sound. I remember it being universal but maybe I am misremembering. Has it always been like this? I spoke with a nice Microsoft employee today but she had not a clue.
A system sound problem to go with my barking dog issue?

Oh boy! I'm gonna get my first 10 points for answering:
    The problem is:
There is no problem. My word does that as well. Its no error, its just that the MS Office developers didn't take the time to put the chime in when you open it off the desktop. (BTW when I was testing to see how the chime worked, my volume was all the way up ,I almost passed out form shock).
One sound problem down, one (dog) to go!

  • IMac won't print microsoft word doc "open with" apple pages

When its set to open with pages it just freezes the pages program and wont print. If I set it to open with textedit or some other program then it will print. Note, if I open it first with pages then it will print from within pages. It just wont print using file > print from the apple menu. Whats the fix for this? Currently I have it set to open all word docs in LibreOffice in order to print docs with ease. But I would rather use apple pages app.

I felt i had to come to help you if your problem was not solved.
I've a customer who just came up with this problem.  He is using Office 2003 on Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bits.  He is using also a Color LaserJet 2600n.  We just reinstalled his software on a new computer and we started experiencing "Current Printer Is Unavailable" in Excel.  When trying to access Page Setup, it was also giving us that same message, and
then we had a dialog listing every computer available.
We produced a PDF, tried to print from Acrobat Reader, it crashed too the same way you mentionned.
    Here's what happenned:
We first installed the driver available from HP web site
    We did some updates from Microsoft Web Site.  There was an optional hardware update for the LaserJet 2600n, so we installed it.  This update is completely {Language Filter Evasion}
Uninstall your printer driver (well, just remove it from your printer list)
Then reinstall it.  In our case, it was accessed thru IP.
When it was installing, it asked us to keep the same driver or REPLACE the driver...  pick-up REPLACE the driver!
And you are good to go...

  • Word doc opens wanting different aps

I had a hard drive go bad...I recovered a lot of docs from a small BU drive BUT  when I try to open any of them, a box comes up w/ a 'selection' to open in. None of them will open any of the BU'ed doc's. Can anyone help, please??????
    TIA, Jack

Is Word in the list of options?
Have you tried opening from Word, rather than double-clicking the file?
Is the filename extension still .doc?
If you "Get Info" for one of the files, can you set "Open with" to Word? And if so, can you then open it?

  • Word Doc Opens as Read Only

When I email a document in word from Pages and open it in Word on my PC it is Read-Only. This is really inconvenient in terms of using it in dropbox to keep my documents synced. Is there anything I can do to remove the read only locking?
I am using Word 2003 with Vista on my PC.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    HI Jim,

  • Computer froze when word doc opened

I was just opening a document from an email, when the whole desktop froze up.  It's been frozen for 1/2 hour.  I had unsaved documents open that I was working on!  Is there any way I can save or print them?  I can't click anywhere!  Help!

It's sad that you're going to lose data...  maybe someone could have helped if you'd given some info like what kind of Mac, what version of the OS, what app you were running, etc.

  • Open WORD docs question....

I have iWorks 09 and Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook. When someone emails me a Word Doc and I open it, the doc opens in Pages, not Word. Yet when I receive an Excel or Powerpoint, these open in the original format. What do I need to do to have Word docs open with Word and not Pages?
    Thank you,

With inexperienced users, even some experienced users, you should never give incomplete instructions.
That is why, when I can, I give full starting point and paths of the necessary steps.
You may know where something is but not everyone else does.
This is the bane of most instructional books. The worst are those dealing with Adobe's products which suffer enormously from palletitis and features stashed willy nilly throughout a badly thought through interface.
Pages and OSX have some fairly key functions stashed out of sight and you do need to give the full path to access them.

    Hi,
Which web browser are you using to view the PDF? Safari 5.1.8
When you open the PDF in Adobe Reader add-in you will either see a floating toolbar
    http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-5224223-317859/430-90/floating +toolbar.JPG
    or a normal toolbar
    http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-5224223-317860/450-11/normalto olbar.JPG
both the toolbars have save button, use the button to save the file locally. I do not see these toolbars. I do, however see this
    and it works! Thanks
    Hope this will help you.
    Thanks

  • Retaining Formatting of Word Docs

Is there not a single app that will not strip out all or most of the formatting in Word docs opened through Dropbox? I spend a lot of time generating complex documents with a lot of formatting, and nothing I have tried preserves the formatting on the iPad, regardless of what app I use to open them. I had great hopes for Docs to Go, and then great hopes for Quick Office, but, alas, neither preserves my Word formatting. Do any of you know of any existing app or anything on the horizon that will preserve my formatting. It's becoming a headache to reformat on the iPad.

Nothing remotely available as yet. On Microsoft's Office web site it says, under system requirements for Office 2007, that it needs 256MB of RAM (check) and at least a 500 MHz processor (check again). So I guess that technically there doesn't seem to be a reason it wouldn't be able to be made to work on the iPad (of course, MS would have to completely rewrite it and they never kept up with their Mac version, let alone the iPad). Unless the iPad base comes to exceed the Mac base (and it well may), I wouldn't expect MS to make that effort. Even then, they still might just say, why bother? We still have the nine hundred gazillion PC computers it works on now.
I'm thinking that if the clamoring gets so loud about this (and it probably will), then Apple's going to have to do something to address it. They may just have to write such an app themselves. The iPad only just came out, so we really should give it some time. And, as has been said before here, it was never billed as a laptop. It really is more like a glorified PDA (but oh, that glory!). So right now if you want to work on your heavily formatted Word documents, don't leave your laptop at home just yet.

  • Refresh placed word-doc

    hello,
    i placed a word doc (word 2010)
safed the indesign doc (indesign cs6)
    edited the word-doc in word
    safed the word-doc
    open the indesign-doc
    and now...
question: how can i "refresh" the text to get the new word-content in indesign?
    thanks a lot

It is possible to link the Word file when placing so that it will update, but htat is a preference option and must be chosen before placing the file to be effective. It is off by default, so unless you changed it prior to palcing the file initially the only way you can get your new changes in the ID file is to either make them manually in ID or replace the Word file.
Note that if you choose to link a Word file any changes you might make, including formatting, will be lost when the linked file is updated (which is probablythe main reason this option is off by default).

  • Some time in the last week or so a particular pair of word (doc) files won't open.

I get the following msgs when I try to open a pair of word (doc)s - "Filename.doc" is being used by "another user". Do you want to make a copy - Y/N
Response of Y gets Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid word document. I've tried to restore it from time machine created feb 24, but get same result.
Any clues as to how to (a) resolve and (b) what I did to cause this. It is a real PITA!!  - Thanks Q
