Word documents don't always open

Hello,
We are still researching this issue.  Here are some of the behaviors we have observed.  We have iViews which open a word document in a new portal window.  These have worked in the past.  Unexpectedly we started seeing the behavior that you could save the document, but not open it.  It varied across systems and for users.  Also, if we opened Word with a blank document and then clicked the link, the word document would load.
Does anyone have any suggestions for this odd behavior?
Thank you,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,
Yeah these issues are difficult to replicate.
Has there been any upgrade patching to your portal or also to browser/ OS.
Can you please try this in another browser Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. If there is any IE6/IE7 installed on any other machine, then perhaps that would be the best way to test. Also, can you try and see the settings in Explorer Bar--> Tools --> Folder options --> File Types.
Also, please try to clear your browser and portal cache and then test.
Thanks,
Nikhil

  • Linked images in my Word document don't show up in RoboHelp

I'm using RoboHelp 8 and Microsoft Word 2003 on Windows XP. I create a new WebHelp project. I added all the .png image files from my Microsoft Word directory to Baggage Files. I then used the Link>>Word Document function to add my Word document to the RoboHelp project. Set my preferences for style pagination, did a Force Update All. However, most of the images I inserted as links into my Word document don't come through into RoboHelp. Apparently I'm missing a setting somewhere but I can't figure out what it is. In addition, one of the images that did come through is horribly degraded.

Still no joy. All of the images in my Word document are linked .png files.
Here's the step-by-step of what I just did:
    Open Word document
    Tools>>Options>>General>>Web Options.
    Change setting. Click OK
    Click OK
Change text on page one of document to make sure document is "dirty".
    File>>Save As.
    Increment number in file name.
    File>>Exit.
    Launch RoboHelp
    Start new project
Add all .png files to baggage.
    File>>Link>>Word Document
    Select appropriate Word file.
    File>>Project Settings>>Import tab
Edit Word conversion settings to set pagination for heading styles and set Convert Word list to RoboHelp list
    Click OK
    Click Apply
    Click OK
Right-click Word document in HTML Files (Topics) and choose Update>>Force Update All
    no joy

Yes.  They don't make any sense to me either.  Are we supposed to be looking at a blank dark gray rectangle, or has the upload process failed the OP ?

  • Hyperlinks in linked Word documents don't work

    Hello All,
I'm having a problem with hyperlinks and I'm hoping you can help me. I have a RoboHelp HTML 8 project built out of Word 2007 linked files. There's a dozen Word files right now, but I'm hoping to scale up the project eventually. Each file is a topic in the CHM.
I have two problems when I generate the CHM:
    1. Links to anchors within the same Word document generate extra subtopic files. Each extra topic begins at the anchor point. The links work, but I'd like to avoid having extra topics cluttering the TOC.
    2. Links to anchors in other Word documents don't work at all. When I examine the HTML in Robohelp, I can see that RoboHelp has generated an empty link. When I link to a Word document without specifying an anchor point, the link in the CHM is to the document itself and not the topic, which is useless for my purposes.
For example, the generated HTML for each of these types of links looks like this:
<p>Link test: <a href="#_Using_Styles">Later in the same topic.</a></p> <== This one works, but generates an extra subtopic
    <p>Link test: <a href="" target="_self">To another topic.</a></p> <== This one doesn't work at all.
Before you ask, yes, I have checked the "Convert References to Hyperlinks" box in the RoboHelp Word conversion settings. According to Adobe documentation, that's all I need to do... So what am I doing wrong?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions,
    Susie

I have an update: Adobe got back to me and confirmed that the  inter-document/inter-topic link issue is an actual RH
bug. I'll check back in here when I have more news.

Spotlight opens Microsoft Word document underneath an already open document

New Lion Feature. If you quit an app that has open windows and documents, it will restore state when restarted; in other words, reopen all the stuff it that was previously open. That's why the new document gets bumped underneath the old.
If too avant-garde for your tastes, visit the General pane in System Preferences and uncheck "Restore windows when quitting...".

  • How to handle the word document which is already opened(Add content to it) using VbScript using "Word.Application" method

    Hello,
I want to add some content to the word document which is opened already and active using vbscript.
Here is the sample code to have an idea.Kindly Help.
    Set oWord = CreateObject("Word.Application")
    oWord.Documents.Open
"c:\test.docx" ----->Here i dont want to open the Document as such as my document which is opened already,i have get the control over that document-I try to achive this by using HP UFT tool for word document automation
    oWord.Selection.EndKey
    6,0
    oWord.Selection.TypeText
" This text has been entered by opening the exisitng document. "
    oWord.ActiveDocument.Save
    oWord.Quit
    Set oWord = Nothing

    Hello,
Nice to see the Reply from you. I have done the same thing what you have suggested but unfortunately i am not achieving the result as expected.
    Here i explain you clearly,
    Business Scenario:
Using an aplication we will create word documents-To do this we need to fill all the document properties and click on OK button-After this,Application automatically launches a Word Document with the File name given by itself as per the Configuration and
it will be available for the Editing-After user add content,he has to check in the document in the application in order to replicate the changes made by user to the document-This is the Business process
Here my Document actually resides in the Users Folder-"C:\Users\narayanasamy_r\Documentum\Checkout\" before checkin event happened, once i add content, save, close the document,i will navigate to the document in the application  and Do check-in
    operation.
Interesting point is that, after i do check-in operation my actual document which was resided in "C:\Users\narayanasamy_r\Documentum\Checkout\" will not be available anymore
    So My logic Should be,
1.identify that particular Document from the Folder and add content, save and close(Note:i dont want to open the document from "word.application" control here, as the application itself opens up the Document)
    Kindly Help On the same.
    Thanks,
    Narayan

  • Microsoft Word documents and Leopard - Letters open to today's date?

Not sure if this is Apple but I will give it a stab.
New iMac (yeah for me) and I noticed with Office 2004 if I open up a cover letter for example, the date in the letter switches to today's date and not the day I saved in the letter.
    Bug? Setting?

Whenever I opened a letter in Word, it does the same thing, both on my Tiger computer and Leopard computer - I keep sort of a master cover letter and the date changes whenever I open it up to change the wording. Don't know how you could prevent it from changing to today's date since I've always wanted today's date to show up

  • Word document links won't open in IE 9

I got a user who cannot open up a word document link in sharepoint online that should display a word  dialog box basically in IE 9. When clicking, nothing happens even if pop up blocker is off, but he can access the word documents from the link in Firefox.
I also found out that I am able to open it up under my windows profile on that machine so it must be a corrupted windows profile.
    I reset IE
    Cleared cache
Verified in registry in class roots that .html is set to htmlfile
Anything I can do besides redoing the user's windows profile?

Can you try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away? You can restart in Firefox Safe Mode by either:
    * Clicking the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click Help [[Image:Help-29]] and selecting ''Restart with Add-ons Disabled'', or;
    * Holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Visio drawings embedded in Word documents don't convert correctly

    Hi,
Windows XP, with all available patches.
Word 2007, with all available patches.
Visio 2002, with all available patches.
Acrobat X pro (trial at this point) with all available patches.
I have some long word documents that have many visio drawings embedded within them.  When I try and convert the word document to a pdf using the Adobe Acrobat tab that gets installed within  Word, I find that the document gets converted without any errors, but when I view the document, some of the Visio drawings are not displayed correctly.  In particular, the arrows at the ends of many of the connectors are missing.
Is this a known problem?  Is there a reasonable workaround available?
I have tried severl other PDF creators and they work with no problem - the Adobe Acrobat is the only converter I have tried that exhibits this behaviour, and at the moment it is preventing me from buying the full version.
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

    Hi ,
If you look down the reply typing section you will find 'Attach Files' box . You can attach the files there , much like I have done in my previous post .
If you cannot still do that you may go to acrobat.com ,create a free account (if you don't have already) and upload the files to your account and pass on the Link to the files here on the forums .
Let me know in case of any issues .
    Thanks,

  • Digitally signed word documents don't arrive in the emails

    Hello
one of our client running the following server
    Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-6.01 (built Dec 5 2007; 32bit)
    libimta.so 6.3-6.01 (built 15:06:35, Dec 5 2007; 32bit)
    SunOS jesmail 5.10 Generic_125101-09 i86pc i386 i86pc
the problem is that when users send a word document that has been digitally signed with a electronic identity card (Belgian Eid), the attachement are filtered and don't arrive the destination.
are there some bugs or limitations concerning this issue or it's not messaging server related.
any hints you can give will be greatly appreciated
    kind regards
    Mario G.

I would say to trace the message via the mail.log_current and see when the attachment disappeared. This is something you could cause to happen with the Messaging Server MTA, but it is not something that would happen with a normal/default configuration. So either they have configured it to do this or perhaps there is some other MTA or device involved??

  • MacBook Pro - Word, Excel, and Email always open at reboot

Every time I reboot my Macbook Pro word, excel, and the email program always open. I have quit the programs numerous times before shuting the computer down, checked the start up section under - Preferences/Users&Groups/Login Items - and nothing is there. It is very annoying. There has to be a default way to get this to stop. Any help is appreciated.

Open  > About this Mac, and check what OS X version you are using. If it's 10.7 or 10.8, the next time you are going to turn off or restart your computer, go to  > Shut Down, and unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". Doing this, no applications other than the ones set up to start automatically will appear the next time you start your MacBook Pro

  • Mltipal windows open when link attachment to microsoft word document is trying to open (Mac)

I'm using MacBook Pro and when I'm using Firefox as browser and trying to open a link to a *doc file, new windows start opening and opening for ever... to stop this infinite process I have to use "Force Quit" to stop Firefox.
Other formats like PDF, PPT and even *docx links will open the file properly.
Any idea how to make it work properly?

Check the setting for how Firefox should handle Microsoft Office Word documents. If it has been set to use Firefox then you will get this behaviour. For details of how to check this see the [[managing file types]] article.

  • Opening Word Documents in different ways - 'Open as' instead of 'Save as'.

I would like to combine several documents into one document. For example, I want to combine Document A, B & C. The document will not be A then B then C, more A,B,C,A,B,C,A,C,A,B.
What I would like to do then is to be able to open only the A parts as one document, or the B parts as another and so on.
Is there anyway in which this can be done?
    All help gratefully received!

"in the different 'formats'." Different order? or is there more to it than the order?
Would AutoText meet your needs? If not, why not?
You can save in one template AutoText entries for A, B and C. This template will have no text showing but will contain the saved AutoText.
Then, you can create documents based on the template that have AutoText fields calling on the entries for A B and C in whatever order you want. Save those documents. Note, AutoText fields, not just inserted AutoText.
To change B in all documents, redefine the AutoText entry for B in the template. Then open the documents and Ctrl+A followed by F9 to update the AutoText fields.
If you are sending these outside your own computer, you would want to unlink the fields after updating. The shortcut for that is Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+Shift+F9.

  • Adobe Reader don't always open instruction pdf files

I have a 27 inch iMac running the latest osx software 10.8.2. and Adobe Reader 10.1.4. Often when I download instruction manuals, such as the one for iDraw, which I purchased from the App Store;  it says the file is corrupt and can't open it. I have experienced this problem with several user manual pdf files. Is there another pdf reader that might be able to open these files. I don't mind paying for the software if it will work. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Leonorafromarcadia

I did get around this problem by trashing Reader 8 and confirming that I still had Reader 7.05 installed
This tip in the MacWorld forum worked for me:
    http://forums.macworld.com/thread/102114
Now I can open pdf files from the internet or email, in Reader 7.05.
