Word documents open as blank document (Word 2013)

Hello,
We currently have a Citrix Xenapp 6.5 environment with Office 2013 Pro installed.  Some users are experiencing issues where when they double click on a word document on a network drive, the application launches but a blank document is presented instead.
It seems to happen on almost majority of the documents but other users can open them fine.  The only fix/workaround we've found so far is to rebuild their profile on the Xenapp server.  This workaround, however, doesn't solve the problem as
it tends to re-occur after a period of time.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Kevin

It is related to Content Redirection feature in Xenapp.
You must read following discussion and follow "Miguel Resende's" solution to fix your issue.

  • Word 2013 crashing opening Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document

    Hi
I am having a major problem with a large number of Word docs which have been copied to my file server. The docs are in Microsoft Word 97 – 2003 format and open fine with Office 2007. I recently rolled out Office 2013 to a department. When they try and open
these docs by double clicking the file, the Word splash screen with status "Starting..." opens with animated dots but stays in this state. I have left this for over 10 minutes but it doesn’t open. I end up having to close the splash screen using
the top right corner cross but if I check in task manager the task remains eating up 25-30% of the CPU - I have to kill the task from here. I have tested this locally and in RDS where majority of users work from hosted office sessions and the problem is evident
in both. The major problem is that RDS server CPU can reach 100% if a couple of users run into the problem.
Going back to the issue. If I open up a blank instance of Word 2013 first and go File - Open and browse to the file, if I choose “Open and Repair” the file opens with “Errors detected”:
"Drawn Objects and Text Boxes 1"
If I select "go to" it goes to the Footer/headers - There is nothing in the header/footer that looks like it is causing an issue. If I now save the file either as 2003 or docx and close, the next time I try and open (double click) the file opens
in compatibility mode or normal mode no problem. It seems strange Word is not able to automatically open/detect and repair anything it doesn’t like.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can work around this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Does this happen to all 97-2003 Word files?
Word 2013 now has lots of updates compared with earlier version of Word, lots of features have been updated. Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003 format), you will probably encounter unexpected problems,
expecially for those heavily formatted files.
We would suggest you to convert your document to the Word 2013 file format, then you will be able to access the new and enhanced features in Word 2013.

  • "This command is not available because no document is open" when opening Word 2013

Whenever I launch Word 2013, the error message "This command is not available because no document is open" appears.  This causes an issue that prevents a program called SNAP used for education from working properly.  I've been able
to work around the error message itself by disabling the start screen for Word 2013, so it opens straight into a blank document, but SNAP still does not work.
I've not been able to make any headway researching the issue.  It seems most people run into this error scripting or coding, and it's usually that they try to save a document or something before they actually make the document.
I don't know that it's relevant, but this is occuring on a 32-bit Windows 7 box.

Hi, I work with SNAP Technical Support and this is a known issue with Cengage's KPDO add-in.
Cengage Keyboarding's Add-In to Word prevents the SnapPlayer application from communicating with Word. This add-in will
    need to be disabled.
    You
may see the following error in the log when this occurs:<Exception>System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException

Disabling the add-in will resolve the issue.

  • Unable to open embedded Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet in Microsoft Word 2013 docx document?

Below is the steps to reproduce this issue.
    1. Open Microsoft Word 2013, create a blank Word document.
    2. Insert Ole object of type Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet or Microsoft Word 97-2003 document.
    3. Save the document as Docx format and close the document. (Saving as Doc format works fine)
    4. Open the saved Docx format in Microsoft Word 2013, now try opening the Ole object.
    5. Error message is thrown as below image.

    Hi,
This issue might be caused by the third-party software/add-in on your machine, interfering with the OLE process (the technical thing that lets you create/edit an object from an outside application inside Word).
Based on my tested with my local environment (Office 2013 & Windows8.1), if I enabled some Excel Com add-ins with Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet, I would get the same error when I embedded it to Microsoft Word 2013 DOCX file. Then, I go to Excel>file>options>add-ins.
Then down the bottom select COM Add-ins from the drop down menu and hit go. Uncheck everything. After that, I could embedded the Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet well.
Please try the suggestion and hope it's helpful.

    Hi,
Since the issue isn't related to Add-ins, please perform a clean boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with Word:
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen,  and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click
    Search.
    2. Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click
    msconfig.
    3. On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the
Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click
    Disable all.
    4. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click
    Open Task Manager.
    5. On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click
    Disable.
    6. Close Task Manager.
    7. On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click
OK, and then restart the computer.
More information about clean boot can be found in this kb below:

OK, another question.  I opened a new blank file and the picture I want to move is in the Photo Bin.  That image is 2 in. X 3 in.  But, when I move it onto the blank image, which is 8X10, it fills up the entire space.  I can't figure out how to put it in the new image in the correct size relationship.
Open the picture file, go to Image>resize>image size. Read what the resolution is in px/in, write it down, do nothing else here at this time
Go to File>new>blank file, Enter the dimensions , resolution the same value that you wrote down in step #1, background color to suit, ok it.
Go back to the picture file, go to Select>all, go to Edit>copy to put it on the clipboard
Go back to the blank file, go to Edit>paste
Get the move tool out of the toolbox, position the picture, and resize with the corner handles of the bounding box, if necessary..
Note: For printing, the rule of thumb is that the resolution be in the 240-300px/in range, although I have had good results below this value. For web work, 72 px/in is ok.

To fix this error, you have to rename the .docx to a zip file, delete the file Websettings.xml and then rename back to a docx.
I've been having the same error and this solution worked for me. It seems to be linked to documents built using Mendeley's reference plugin for Word. This issue is mentioned on their support site (here)
and that may be why the issue comes up with dissertations &c. The fix is easy and it works, but I would suggest you do the fix using a

  • Word 2013 crashes when I open a second document

    Hello,
I have installed Word 2013 a few days ago. Opening a document works fine, word starts without a problem. But as soon as I try to open a second document, the whole program crashes. And when I try to open the recovered document, it crashes as well.

    Hi,
This issue seems to be related to add-ins.
Try disabling all add-ins, test if the issue persists:
    1. Open Word 2013.
    2. Click on File -> Options -> Add-ins.
    3. Under Manage select -> COM Add-ins.
    4. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click

  • Word 2013 slow to open documents from SharePoint 2013

    Hi all,
Word 2013 running on a Windows 8.1 client is take 2 or more minutes to open a document from SharePoint 2013. Excel takes less then 10 seconds from the same site in SharePoint.
I have remove all proxy configuration from IE, clear the Auto Detect Settings. Added the URL's to the intranet zone and disabled all IE addons. I have also performed a reset on IE, reinstall of Office and tried a number of workstations. All have the same
issue. The document just take forever to open.
Checking with Fiddler, I can see 3 requests hit the SharePoint server then nothing... after a few minutes the document opens.
    Any ideas?

  • Word 2013 - Error inserting an HTML file in a word document

    Hello,
Here is an issue i'm having:
Open a blank doc in Word 2013
Click Insert - Object - Create from file. Then select an html file, click insert and ok.
i'm always getting the below error message:
I can reproduce this issue on multiple machines.
Office 2013 preview and Office 2013 RTM are getting same error.
    Anyone else ?
    Thanks

    Hi Christophe_P,
I’m able to repro the behavior in my test environment as per your repro steps.
An Office repair does NOT impact the issue for me.
I’ll report the issue to the Office product group.
    A possible workaround:
    In a Word 2013 document>Insert tab > Text group > Click Object
In the Object dialog, click the Create New tab
Select Microsoft Word Object; then click OK
In the newly embedded/activated Word doc object, click Insert tab > Text group > Click the Object dropdown arrow; then choose “Text from File…”
In the Insert File dialog, navigate to; then select the html file; then click Insert.

  • Frozen out menu ribbon in Word 2013 and cannot preview word documents in Outlook 2013

I seem to be having a recurring problem with Word 2013 from Office Home Edition single user. When I try to put a caption on a table, the entire document page layout changes from portrait to something close to landscape and then the entire menu ribbon freezes

in office outlook 2013 and the protected mode feature hasn't worked since then either.
Can I get some help with this please? I reinstalled, did online fixing and tried a few other fixes to no avail. Could it have started as a result of my installing a trial version of Office Visio which comes as a totally different package from my Home edition?

Is this the only action that will result in the issue? Does this happen to any Word documents?
The first thing that I'd suggest you to do is to install any available updates to your system and Office installation, and then verify result.
Then, please check if you have any add-ins integrated with your Word 2013 (please note that some programs might install add-ins automatically), try in safe mode and see if issue was caused by some add-in conflicts:

  • Word 2013 and documents with more than 400 pages

    Hi,
we have the Problem that Word 2013 need terrible long to load or save documents with a large number of pages (>400). Ther are no Images or Links inside the document nor are there references to any templates. The File size is not so large, its about 2.5-3MB.
The User says that this was faster with Office 2010. I could not beleave this, cause on a test mashine with Word 2010 it wasn't faster.
Now my question. Are ther any Options, registry keys ore something else, we can use to speed up this behaviour? Someone has an idea on how to solve this issue? This user is killing my nerves, every 10mins he gives me a call or write an email to me, why its
not working and why we can not solve the problem. ;-)
    Thanks for any ideas
    Micha

If, in your testing you've confirmed the document is, in fact, no faster to load or save, then that's what matters insofar as Word is concerned. Without knowing what else might have changed, it's impossible to give a definitive answer. Possibilities that
wouldn't show up on a stand-alone PC include documents that are attached to templates whose location no longer exists on the network, or if Windows is using a printer driver that is located on a network print server or the user's workstation has damaged/missing
    fonts. See: http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/280821
All these issues are easily resolved - the template one can even be resolved by the user. To attach a different template:
    1. Open the document
    2.Choose Devloper|Document Template.
3.If anything other than 'Normal' is listed, click Attach.
4.In the Attach Template dialog box, select the template that you want, and then click Open.
5.In the Templates and Add-ins dialog box, click OK.
In the meantime, report the user to management for harassment! Pestering about the issue every 10mins is unreasonable.
    Cheers

  • OPM 10.4.4 not working with Word 2013 (toolbar will not stay on document)!!!!

I recently upgraded to Microsoft Office 2013 and then was forced to upgrade to OPM 10.4.4 in order for Word 2013 to recognize the OPM Toolbar.  The toolbar in the WORD document does not last (or stay) after closing the document.  Additionally, the TEXT within the document is not present.  If I open the document in Windows explorer, you can see all of the text, but without the OPM toolbar.  We have tried everything to get the toolbar onto the word document and to display the contents within the document.  OPM must recognize the word document at some base level because it is able to complile and build/run the rulebase.  By the way, this occurs within every rule document and every rulebase within WORD 2013.  The BI-Pulisher Add-Ins toolbar also had the same problem when trying to add that into Word 2013, but did manage to get it to stay, but it seems limited from the nice presentation that occurs in 2010 Word documents.  Basically, I believe Word 2013 has issues with OPM specifically and maybe BI-Publisher.

See OPM 10.4.4 User Guide article Update Oracle Policy Modeling Templates: http://docs.oracle.com/html/E48373_01/toc.htm#Projects and files/Update_OPM_templates.htm
Open the project in OPM, but leave all the rule documents closed. From within OPM 10.4.4, go to Tools > Update Oracle Policy Modeling Templates.
The field "Folder containing documents to update" will usually already display the folder path for the Development folder of the project. If it doesn't, browse to it. If you've got your OPA project in the regular default location, it will be something like this: C:\projects\(your project name)\Development  If you've put your OPA project in a different location on your machine, then browse to wherever you put it.
Leave 'Include sub-folders' and 'Update document styles from template' checked. Click Next, Next, etc. until it's done, then 'Finish'.

  • Word 2013 Hangs every time a document is saved

    Hello,
I have a problem with Word 2013 on Windows 8.
Every time I save a document, the program hangs until the file is written to disk. Things works fine afterwards until the next save. It happens with documents
    of all sizes, 200KB, 500KB, 1MB.
While this happens the "saving to disk" progress bar at the bottom of the window takes several seconds to complete. During this time, the whole application hangs.
The problem suddenly appeared. Automatic updates is disabled. I have updated since but the issue remain.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Gentlemen,  I have been experiencing the very same issue.  I'm running MS Office Word 2013 via my subscription to Office 365, which, in turn, was acquired in August 2014 when I purchased Microsoft's Surface Pro 3.  You'd think that if my hardware
is made by Microsoft, its OS is made by that company, and its integrated office suite is also made by that company, you would be best positioned (better than using a computer where the hardware, OS and office software were from differing companies) to operate
trouble-free.  Well, in several respects, my hopes have been dashed.
On numerous occasions each day, but not every time, I've experienced this "hang" problem, when trying to "SAVE AS" to my local C drive.  It seems to make no difference whether it is a large size or small size file.  My only
option has been to:  (1) use Task Manager to forcibly close the Word program, thus losing everything I've done, and (2) re-boot the computer (fortunately, shut down and re-boot on a Surface takes a half minute total, even with login) and then restart
Word, and create/save a totally blank document in the intended save location, after which I can then use CTRL-S to save the document as I expand its contents from zero at the start.
My Surface is set to automatic updates on all three aspects (firmware/hardware drivers etc., Office 2013, and the OS, and related Windows files).  I've gone into update history and have zero error messages - all updates have loaded successfully, and
there are no more updates to obtain.
This is intolerable.  Microsoft needs to attend to this, or else, as with another comment earlier, I will be forced, due to the loss of productivity and waste of time (and sometimes loss of very good thoughts I'd written down and now could not recapture
or reconstruct), to go to WordPerfect.
I'm not terribly anxious to go try out various unofficial, non-sanctioned little patches or fixes, and risk fouling up my computer setup even worse (given that I am not an expert anyway and might mess up the suggested fix).  We need to hear something
from The Source, from Microsoft itself, in an approved, sanctioned manner, on how to stop Word from hanging on "Save As."
    Many thanks

  • Is there a way to programmatically save a Word 2013 document into a Word 2010 in compatibility mode?

    Hi,
I have a Word 2013 document that I want to open in Word 2010.  The problem is this document has a repeating section content control and if I open it in Word 2010, the content control is removed so the data won't be seen.  Is there any way programmatically
to save the document in Word 2010 compatible mode?  So that I can open in both Word 2013 and 2010.  By the way, I'm using C# and OpenXML for this.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on my tested, I created a "Rich Text" content control in Word 2013, and it'll works fine in Word 2010.
As far as I know, in Word 2013, content controls provide three key improvements: improved visualization, support for XML Mapping for Rich Text content controls, and a new content control for repeating content.
Please see the article "What's new with content controls in Word 2013" it may be helpful to you.
If you have any further question about coding/programing, please post your question to MSDN forum.
