Word Files are suddenly corrupt will not open. How do I recover?

Hi,
Have you tried a repair? From Word choose open, but instead of choosing open click the arrow from the combobox and choose "Open and Repair" see if that helps.

I use Replication Manager to manage my Replication; and there is only one site currently in my application.
I killed the App process with signal -9. (ie. $ kill -9 appID).
Then I try to restart the App, but the event_callback function got a PANIC event when to open the envirment.
    The open flag is:

    ret = dbenv->open(dbenv, path, flags | DB_SYSTEM_MEM, 0);

    How can recover it ?

First, what version of Berkeley DB are you running and on what system?
The error indicates something amiss in the log. The LSN values are quite
small. Can you run 'db_printlog -N -h <env path>' and post the log
    contents?
If you are using BDB 5.0 or later, can you also post the contents of
the __db.rep.diag00 file in the environment home directory? Thanks.

  • One of my Pages documents is corrupted and won't open...how to save the file?

We have the new iPad 3, and Pages. My friend was working on adding pictures to a document we're writing, and then the next day (or the same day) we tried to re-open the file and the app crashed, every time. We cannot share, send to itunes, email, or do anything with the file, and any attempt to open it crashes Pages. On iCloud.com, the file fails to download every time, whatever the format selected. And I have most of this file (without the pictures/edits) on her PC from the old Word days, but I'm trying to recover the Pages/iPad version with all the pictures in it.
We have the newest iPad, updated iOS, and the newest Pages update (1.6.1 i think it is).
I have only two or three guesses as to what the problem could be:
-My friend sometimes doesn't remember to delete pictures before adding a picture in it's place (you know, if you add a picture in a certain spot and then decide to replace the picture for a better one), so there may be 8 or 9 pictures stacked on top of each other in one place. Maybe all that rendering is jamming up the app on this particular file. Other files we've worked on with/without pictures open fine.
-The storage is full, so it's acting up like anything else does. We're new with the iPad so we haven't figured out what to do with photos and whatnot. My Mac is configured for my other documents and my appleid/icloud, and this iPad is on my friend's appleid, so I'll have to see about what I can do to back up to her PC.
-There's a problem with Pages 1.6.1 (which I've seen written around the web).
Any suggestions as to what the cause, or more importantly, solutions might be? I'm backing up everything else I can externally so restoring is an option. Also, I'm lucky enough NOT to have deleted the old Pages 1.6 file in her Recycle Bin, so I have that app file on her desktop. I'm not sure whether I should try deleting the app out of itunes/the iPad, and then see about dragging the old Pages back in, or what that will do to the important files (especially the corrupted one).
Any advice would be helpful, even if I have to buy a recovery app of some kind. Advice on how to avoid the issue or report it to Apple would also be helpful!
P.S. I already called AppleCare and they said something to the effect of they'll try something, eventually, they're not sure, etc etc.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I can't open the file in word because it is corrupt and cannot be opened, what can i do?

I had a Word .doc that became corrupted while SpellChecking an entire vintage book that had been OCRed. Crashed every time I opened it in Word. I was able to open, strip off the Word Header & Footer (invisible), spell check and save as a plain text file with TextWrangler - BBEdit's Baby Brother > http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/ - no Word-ish formatting, but the data was there in total.

  • Protected View Error "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened"

    All
I have a problem with Protected View in Office 2010 on Windows 7.
Symptom:  When downloading a file from the Internet, the file will not open if launched directly from the source location, or saved locally and then opened.  This
is impacting both Word and Excel.  I haven’t tested other applications.  The user gets the error "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened.".
Expected behaviour:  Documents should open in Protected View because they are coming from an untrusted zone (Internet Zone).
    Troubleshooting Results:
     -      If I turn off Protected View the error goes away and the documents open without
issue (but not in Protected View obviously)
    -      If I save the file locally, then copy it to a network drive, the problem goes away (because the zone information is changed?).
    -      If I save the file directly to a network location, then open it, the problem does not impact me (also doesn’t open in Protected View)
    -      If I repair Office the problem is NOT fixed
    -      If I reinstall Office the problem is NOT fixed
The problem doesn't impact all machines, but any new machine I build suffers the problem.  All Protected View options are set by group policy and all machines are getting the correct settings.
    -       The setting “Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet” is enabled
    -       The setting “Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations” is enabled
    -      The setting “Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments” is enabled
    -      Enable Data Execution Prevention mode is enabled
Has anyone seen this problem or can anyone offer suggestions of where to start looking for the root cause?  There are lots of postings on this around the various Internet forums, but most
just suggest turning off Protected View, that is not a valid solution to my mind, Protected View is there for a very sound reason and it is not something I'm willing to turn off, especially when it is working on some machines as expected.
    Thanks.
    James.

Thanks for coming back, James, and I'm glad you've found the source of your
    problem.
As an aside, I had no idea HP made software like that and will take a look
at it - or would if I could. Personally, although I love their hardware, I
wouldn't touch HP software, and the fact that their web page doesn't load
(in IE8) just reinforces my feeling.
    Enjoy,

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
You can try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • Outlook 2010 error - The file is corrupt and cannot be opened

    Hi experts
Im getting the error - "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened", when opening office attachments in outlook 2010.
I’ve tried disabling the protected view options in office which hasn’t fixed the issue, the only suggestion I have seen which I’m sure would work is to delete
the user profile and recreate. This seems a bit over kill to me, does anyone know what files I need to remove to fix the issue.
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can try using the Fix it tool in the following KB article to fix the issue:

    nerbyad,
Sorry to hear you are having this issue today.
Does this happen on all files or a specific file?
If this is happening on a specific file, it is most likely that file.
If this is happening on all files, I would check to see if this is happening in other users accounts as well.  If you dont have other users, create one and see if preview works inside that new user account.

  • After data file recovery, files are red and won't open

My HD crashed so I used Data Rescue 3 to recover my files. It worked but now all the files are highlighted red and won't open. The file sizes look right but for instance when I try to open a mov file it says, this is not a movie file. My FCP projects won't open either. Does anybody know what the problem is and what I need to do to get the files usable again?

Data recovery can be hit and miss. Data Rescue is unlikely to be able to recover every single byte from every single file. If so much as a single byte is out of place, QuickTime will be unable to read the file.
I would suggest you give QT Repair a try and if that doesn't work, try File Salvage:

Thanks, Courcoul. I did Get Info and changed all the permissions to Read & Write for Me, Fetching, and Everyone. Still doesn't work. But, if I click on the picture of the Lock to Unlock it, I can't do that, because it's a work computer and they don't give me admin privileges. So maybe that's the problem? Though I don't see why. I use to be able to open all the files on my computer.

  • Links to web page in any mail message will cause Mail app to hang, and won't open Safari.

Repeatable problem on iPhone or iPad.
Any link to a web page will cause Mail to lock up and become unresponsive, and won't open the web page in Safari.
The only way out of this is to back out to the home screen, double-click on the home button, then select the Mail app icon, holding it until I can "close" it. I can then relaunch Mail and look at any message I want just like normal.  But if select any link, whether a text link or a picture in an email, the whole thing happens again.
Occurs on both my iPhone 5 and my iPad both running iOS 6.0.1.
Any suggestions that will allow me to go directly from a mail msg to a linked web page embedded within?

You ran a defective third-party "utility" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • MS Word files corrupted

    Greetings
    MAC OS X.3.9, MSWord X
I have the following problem in using word.
Some of my documents get corrupted and cannot be opened or recovered. (Below some of what I get if I try to open them)
If I try to open them I get the dialog box that says it is not a MS document giving me the option to translate the document from other programmes to MSW. None of the options work however.
FYI all the documents that are corrupted where created in MSW X.
I have done permission repairs and things like Mac Janitor etc.
I was alo wondering if my back-up programme was causing this, but have not found anything that indicates this.
    Question is:
How can I recover these documents?
What causes it and how can it be prevented or repaired?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks
    Eric
