  • Word for Mac 2008 - documents even at 100% size are too small!

I am new to Mac. Just started using Word for Mac (2008) on my new MacBook Air. (I do not have a current user contract with Microsoft for this Word for Mac, so I cannot call them for support.)
The 100% setting shows my new (and old) documents in a very, very reduced way. Only by zooming to the 200% setting can I get the documents to look a normal, standard size. I never experienced this on a PC, using Word versions 1995, 2000, 2007, 2011. I have searched the internet for answers, but have found nothing to solve this. I am sure there must be others having this same problem. Can anyone help me?

Apparently this is a shortcoming of Mac OS X - resolution independence would allow the display and real world size to match. There is also no way of offsetting this and entering the real dpi of your Macbook Air into MS Word - it just assumes the display is 72dpi and that is that. There is no way to make it correct as it stands unfortunately.

  • Spaces and MS Word for Mac 2008..anyone else having this problem

    Hello,
I know MS Word for Mac 2008 isn't a Apple Product but is anyone else having the same problem as me and is there a solution?
I have it set up to be in "spaces 4" and I'll be working on it and suddenly it ends up in space 2, or 1. Really aggravating.
    Sean

Yes. Exact same problem. Folks at the MS MacBu are aware of it and say that both Apple and MS are working on it. It's still an incredibly annoying problem, though. In fact, it's even worse than you descrine.
Not only does Word 2008 work with spaces, it makes it impossible to use spaces with other applications. I've tried to leave all Word docxs (and docs) in one space and then put other applications in other spaces. It doesn't work. Word doc(x)s still move around randomly.
It's one thing for Word 08 not to work with spaces, but to actually interfere with other apps that do (did) work with spaces, that's pretty bad. I have to admit I feel quite foolish for purchasing Microsoft Office 2008 (at considerable expense). I do at least hope both companies are working on a fix.

  • Trouble with MS Word for Mac 2008 file open from LaCie NAS drive after installing Mac OS X 10.9 Maverick.

Since installing Max OS X 10.9 "Maverick" when I open Word documents from my LaCie NAS drive they open as empty documents. When I copy them to my local hard drive and then open them the content is fine. Has anyone else run into this? I contacted LaCie and they said "we do not support OS X or MS Word so talk to Apple and Microsoft. I have a thread with Microsoft and here is one with Apple.
    Thanks

I suspect that the issue with the EFI partition is unrelated to your Mac’s slow performance. I have had this same error message with Disk Utility. The EFI partition is related to firmware updates, and as it is not even booted when you boot from your usual boot drive, it is not relevant. (I was able to repair the EFI partition with Techtool Pro 7 , though, but then it reappeared, which makes me think it is a bug with Disk Utility.)
I’d uninstall the following items, which are frequent flyers on the list of culprits for misbehaving macs:
    Blackberry
    google keystone agent
    Chrome
Perian stopped being supported by the developer before Mountain Lion, so I doubt that it’s compatible with Mavericks.
I have the same 8,2, BTW, and it is very fast. I like Kappy's suggestion. If getting rid of those 4 items above doesn't fix the problem, then a clean install (and not reinstalling your old "utilities" or other junk) will.

  • How can I add a date picker in Word for Mac 2008 with more than 25 items? I need to select calendar days so I need 31 items.

I am building a form for customers to complete. I want them to be able to click on a pull down menu and select the day of the month 1-31. The drop down form field only allows 25 entries. How can I get 31 entries? I'm on a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion.

  • Cannot insert page numbers in Word for Mac 2008

When I select "insert page number" from the insert menu, nothing appears. I am in email communication with Microsoft support to try to understand why this function isn't working correctly, but so far have no solution, so I wonder if anyone on this list has an idea about what could be happening. I never had this problem with Word 2004, and installed Word 2008 a few weeks ago.

The funny thing is that it is ONLY your user account. So I would advise perhaps, after all to reinstall office:
    1) quit all office apps
    2) remove items (put on desktop but do NOT yet trash!):
    a) startupdisk (NOT homefolder!)/library/application support/MICROSOFT (add a "TOP" to Microsoft, by renaming it, so you know it came from the top level start up disk; then move iten "MICROSOFT TOP" to trash - but do NOT empty your trash!)
    b) homefolder(this is your actual login account or folder)/library/application support/MICROSOFT (put this second microsoft folder onto desktop, rename to "MICROSOFT SECOND", then move to trash)
    c) then go to homefolder/library/preferences/ where you find a THIRD microsoft folder (you can move that straight to trash)
    d) stay in preferences and further up, you'll find around 10 or so "plist" items, all starting with "com.microsoft...." (put them all in trash)
FINALLY!: remove microsoft from your applications folder itself (put into trash)
Do NOT empty your trash can, so your old MS items are still in there.
    Reinstall office.
That is the safest way I can think of you doing it.
Let me know how you get on.

  • Users of Word for Mac:  Help on Two Issues!!

I downloaded some fonts I wanted to use in my Word for Mac document. Download went fine and the fonts are happily nestled in the Fonts folder. However, when I open Word, they do not appear on the Font listing. Any thoughts as to how to get them over so I can use them?
Also, I wanted to use the Fonts to create a logo that--ideally--would be a half circle of text over the design. Simple enough, I thought: just go into Toolbox and pull down the styles (like you can in Windows) and choose the style I want.
No such luck (we are dealing with a Mac here so everything is special) but suddenly a "special styles" toolbox appeared with exactly what I wanted--the ability to format a font to a 180' half circle, mirror image text and some other stuff that seemed interesting!
When I went back to the document to format the text the "special styles" toolbox disappeared, never to be found again. Sigh...
Any ideas? Oh, yes, there is a 180' in "Word Art" but I can't get the downloaded fonts into there, so that isn't really a solution.

Okay, here are the details: Word for Mac 2008 Ver. 12.2.8
Yes, I did post to the MS Forums.
Still no answer from either MS or MAC forums.
Sorry, but this doesn't strike me at that tough a question, hence the *****. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who uses Word for Mac and I'm equally sure I'm not the first one to download a font that didn't load into Word for Mac. The answer is out there somewhere....

  • Enable macros in word for mac?

I've been trying to open a form for school which is a word template and requires "enabling macros", but I can't figure out where to do that in my new macbook - any help greatly appreciated.

  • Accented characters in Word for Mac: Option-i doesn't work

I am trying to type an accented character (e.g., a circumflex over a letter). Everything I find online says type and hold "OPTION-i", release, then type the letter, but it doesn't work. Instead I get the accent over empty space, next to the letter. This is MS Word for Mac 2008 software on a MacBook Pro. Any ideas?

    > the problem is that I'm trying to put a "hat" over a consonant
I suspect you'll find that, the more precise and specific your question, the more greater the likelihood of getting a speedy and helpful answer.
    > Looks like the software only allows the circumflex over vowels.
    > Option-i does work on my computer for vowels. (Built-in
    > keyboard).
Nonsense. Nothing to do with your keyboard. Btw, you still haven't told us what character you're trying to insert.
    > I guess I will have to use the Equation Editor.
That's an option, but not the only one. Just for the sake of argument, let's assume it's p-hat (not the party hat, but the symbol for sample proportion).
    (1) Specifically in Word, you can use fields (overstrike). Go to Insert > Field… > Equations and Formulas > Eq; then type
    EQ \O (p,^)
and confirm. (Note that "EQ" will be inserted by Word automatically, you don't need to type it again.)
Once you get the hang of it, you won't need to insert it using menu & submenu commands, but by typing and applying styles.
    (2) The right way is Unicode. Currently, Unicode defines >100k codepoints, so, for obvious reasons, it's neither necessary nor practical for most keyboard layouts to be able to access anything but a small subset. You can enter Unicode characters using Character Viewer (aka Special Characters), or, more efficiently, using the Unicode Hex Input keyboard layout.
If the character is already defined as such in Unicode, eg, for all (upside down A), then hold down Option and type its Unicode hex code, ie 2200 -- ∀. However, p-hat isn't defined as such, so it must be entered as a combining character sequence. The sequence is ((Latin small letter p) + (combining circumflex accent)), or (p + 0302) -- p̂.
Unfortunately, all is not sweetness and light. Although this is how it should be done, the display may disappoint. Questions 12b and 12c in the respective Unicode FAQ explain what happens and why.

  • Maverick: doc saving function in Word for Mac

I just downloaded Maverick for my 2010 iMac. I'm happy with it but for one problem: saving documents in my Word for Mac 2008 is a royal pain.
Instead of the good old one-step save process under Snow Leopard's Word for Mac, Word/Maverick now requires a three-step save process: a "Save as" window followed by a "Replace" window and sometimes followed by a window saying "X doc already exists. Would you like to replace it?"
Well, duh. Anyone else having this problem? Any fixes for it? I looked for a patch from Microsoft but no luck.
    Thanks and Happy New Year.

  • Opening Word for Mac on a PC

I use Word for Mac 2008 on my iMac and MacBook because I need to send files to PC users, but many recipients can't open the files. I can't help wondering what 'compatability mode' is about if the files can't be opened by different computers without the users downloading additional software (which business users would be unlikely to welcome). I have also tried saving files in .docx and .dot formats, but the result is the same.
I realise that this might not be a problem for the present forum, but can anyone suggest a decent alternative informational source? I've tried Mactopia and can't find anything that really covers this, besides which answers, if any, are slow in coming.

Thanks for all the input and advice.
In answer to rkaufmann87, I meant .doc – careless of me.
Carolyn Samit asks if I click ‘Attach’ in Mac Mail. Well, Carolyn, this is going to amaze you. It certainly amazes me, because in all the years that I’ve used Mac Mail it has never occurred to me to click ‘Attach’. I drag my files into the body on an email. That could be my problem, so thanks for that. From now on I will ‘Attach, Attach, Attach’. Please imagine me banging my very thick head on my desk as I write this!
Steve M mentions using a previous version of Word. Good point. I never had any trouble with previous versions – even dragging 50,000 word files into the emails. As for ‘compatibility mode’ – the phrase automatically follows every Word file I create. I find it rather irritating and have tried to find ways to eliminate it, but it persists.

  • In Lion, Word for Mac only prints last two digits of year

In Snow Leopard, the automatic dates that auto fill in Word for Mac (08, 2011) worked fine...BUT since I 'upgraded' to Lion, (10.7.3) only the last two digits of the year will autofill, EVEN in full date mode...ie, SHOULD BE:
    February 21, 2012
BUT auto filled as: February 21, 12
I saw on a MS help site that it's ID'ed as a problem in Lion:
    From http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword/automatic-dat e-entry-doesnt-enter-entire-year/91793432-006b-4f6a-99fa-cf425266cb84
    This was the query:
automatic date entry doesn't enter entire year
Applies To: Office for Mac | Office 2008 for Mac | Word for Mac
When I enter the weekday at the beginning of a sentence, the month, date and year are automatically filled in. However, instead of having the whole years, such as 2011, it only enters the last two digits, such as "11". This is new since an update a month or so ago. I would like to set it back to the original "Friday, November 04, 2011" if possible.
Appreciate any help I can get.
    ANSWER:
Its a bug in OSX.7 evidently MS has not rung up Apple and said hey get off your duff and fix this date issue.  If you can find a place to send bug report to Apple do so.
So I checked the OSX Lion support site on apple.com and could not find an answer.
Does anyone know how to fix or how to get Apple to fix?
    Thank you.

It's a bug, but whether it's a bug for Apple to fix or for Microsoft to fix is unknown. The thread you post is unauthoritative, being only comments by other users who have no more idea as to where the bug really lies (unless an Apple engineer has confirmed a Lion bug, something I've not seen) as any other user does; no one in that thread works for or speaks for either Microsoft nor Apple.
You can comment on the issue to Apple, if you wish:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
but whether it's something they can fix or whether it's Microsoft's problem I can't say.
    Regards.
