Word freezing constantly

I am running Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac and Word is freezing many times a day. Every time I try to open a document it will freeze on me. I have a macbook 2.16 GHz 2GB running Leopard. Anyone else having problems with Word in Leopard?

I too, have had the Word 2004 freeze problem with Leopard 10.5.2 as also has a friend with an iMac. It seems to be a bug in Spaces execution. Having designated a home space for Word I found that if I drag several Word docs to another space some of them freeze while others are Okay.
Until Apple comes up with a fix for this Spaces problem, best solution is to quit Spaces altogether if you want to use Word.
I never had this problem with Desktop Manager.

    bmears6,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze constantly?
Regarding the contents of the report, having only 64 MB free RAM in Lion suggests that you’re experiencing slowdowns due to swapping to disk. You have what looks like two HP printer drivers using up 3.5 GB of RAM between them — that seems like an extraordinarily large amount of RAM to provide printer support. Perhaps there’s a problem with the printer configuration?

  • G570 USB mouse cursor freezing constantly

The problem will be explained lower but let me tell you how this was.
So I've had this problem like 1,5 years ago, after I bought the laptop. So I bought a cheap mouse for it back then, and I noticed that the laptop had problems with the USB mouse, fine, I thought it was the poor mouse, so I bought another cheap one, and it worked fine. Then I bought a gamepad, and again, this problem.
Today I bought a gaming mouse, and the problem re-appeared. I've been searching through the internet all day long.
Basically, the mouse cursor freezes constantly, also with that "plugged-unplugged" sound, but the touchpad works.
I've been looking all around, tried the mouse on another laptop and it works fine.
    I've tried:
    - Starting the laptop in safe mode.
    - Uninstalling/reinstalling the realtek USB reader or w/e its name is.
    - The device manager trick (I think you know what I'm talking about)
    - Been changing the OS many times after I bought the laptop, that problem persisted with the gamepad.
    - Tried different ports around the laptop.
None of them helped. BUT, I saw that actually it hangs when the CPU is throttling. I've changed my power plan to energy saver and the problem went away. I've changed the maximum/minimum CPU power, the problem went away.
But the frequency sets constantly at 800 MHz. What can I do to keep it at 2200 MHz (i3-2330M clock speed) and also keep the mouse working well?

    Hey Barrett_killz,
      Welcome to the forums
I would suggest you trying out a different USB mouse and see if that helps
Cant suggest anything else as you have already uninstalled and installed the Drivers

  • Mini Freezing Constantly

I bought my Ipod mini July 20, 2005 a week after I bought it, it froze did the resetting ad worked after a day. Everyday now it freezes constantly!!! About 4-5 times a day! Can I go to a technicion at the apple store and see what is wrong with it?? And if there is will I be able to get a new one?

Danielle, I'm certain an Apple rep would be able to help you ... if you'd like to try something yourself, you can give this a go: Restoring Your Ipod to Factory Settings. It won't hurt, and it very well may fix it. Be sure you download the most recent updater, don't use the one that came with your iPod.

  • [SOLVED] KDE 4.10 freezes constantly

    Hello
Since the 4.10 update, i've been experiencing some issues wich render my dayly use of the desktop unusable.
Every now and then, dolphin, gweenview, kdialog, and pretty much every kde app (okular seems an exception, but i'm not entirly sure about it) freeze constantly for 30-40 seconds every couple of minutes. Other apps (yakuake, ksysguard) response correctly while dolphin/gweenview/kdialog are frozen.
    top/ksysguard show no anormal output.
I've tried a clean kde4 session (by deleting ~/.kde4) and a new user, and the problem persists. Don't know what else to try, nor wich logs to look.
Anyone experiencing similar issues? If there's a log I can take a look at, please tell me where it is.

Solved, I changed akonady's database to SQL lite instead of mySQL, and now seems to run fine.
EDIT: False positive, issue isen't solved. Further research indicates this might not be a kde related bug, but a chrome/chromium one, as posted here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159237
EDIT2: Again, following https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159237 recomendations, I switched to Chromiuim instead of Google Chrome and now everything works as expected (something related to nvidia's tmalloc implementation, read linked thread for further info)

Take it in for diagnosis/repair.  I suspect you have a hardware problem (or problems).

  • Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly

Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly. Worked perfectly before. Anyone else finding these issues? I'm running a quad core Mac Pro, so it's definitely not the hardware.

I've maxed out the memory assignment, but this isn't a memory problem per se.
It looks like certain Premiere Pro conditions are associated with a huge increase in kernel_task memory, zeroing out any available free memory.  In my case it seems to be associated with effects applied to titles or jpgs  or imported psd (Photoshop) files.
Program restart pulls kernel memory back to the 1.3gb normal size.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 freezes constantly

    Hello there,
This is my first post on this forum so I'm new with this. I got my macbook pro around August of last year. It's the 13' inch 2010 version. Everything was fine until about 3 weeks ago I started having problems with it. My macbook freezes constantly like every hour or so. I can't do anything when it happens. The only thing to do is to turn it off using the power button. Sometimes it even freezes during boot up and I have to turn it off pressing the power button. I ran the hardware test from the application DVD and no errors came up. I also ran disk utility and repaired the disk and no problems were encountered and the computer kept freezing. I also reinstalled mac os x and I still have the problem.
I called apple support and they only offered me to buy apple care. They also sent me some articles about troubleshooting. I booted in safe mood and then restarted the computer and still had the problem. I also reseted the CMS ( can't remember the name of that).
The computer has all the latest updates. Does anybody know what the problem might be?
    Thanks in advance.

If it was a hardware issue, will they fix it at not cost?
Yes, if they can prove it is hardware and you can't have caused the hardware issue. That's why a visit of the genius bar would be helpful, or an authorized service center. If they can't prove it is hardware, that's when you are in the in between warranty issue. Note:
    1. AppleCare is free for Apple hardware and softawre including phone calls on the same for 90 days from date of computer's purchase.
    2. After 90 days but up to 1 year after date of computer's purchase only the hardware repair is free for Apple considered defects. Software is considered on a per incident basis for machines that the AppleCare service agreement has not been purchased.
    3. You may elect to extend all three elements of part 1 anytime during the period of 1 & 2 as an AppleCare service agreement.
    4. After 1 year non-AppleCare machines are considered on a per incident basis. After 3 years from computer's purchase all machines are considered on a per incident basis.
Last time I called them they never told me I was under 1 year warranty
Did you ask? They may not know that you are under the 1 year hardware warranty unless you registered at http://www.apple.com/register/
Also, there are no apple stores close to where I live. Can I just ship the computer to them?
Check http://www.apple.com/buy for your nearest service center. If their policies are not agreeable, then call AppleCare directly for a shipment option:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
Mind you, if you haven't purchased AppleCare, they have every right to ask for your credit card, in case they find you damaged the machine, or the issue is software. It would be much better if you can bring it in anywhere authorized, not just an Apple retail store.
If you want to, you can also enlist the help of someone at a local usergroup who may not be authorized but may have tools to diagnose your issue:

I too have experienced this problem and was hoping to find help here. Another person has experienced a very similar problem, but without response here: Adobe flash player freezes constantly
This all started when I updated to version 16.0.0.305. When I downgrade to version 16.0.0.296, the problem is resolved. However 16.0.0.305 is a bug fix that patches a critical zero day exploit, so I do not want to stick with it for very long.

  • Iphone 3gs freezes constantly

My Iphone 3gs freezes constantly and does not respond to resetting. Will start working again after being left for long periods of time frozen then the cycle repeats itself. What is wrong with it and what should I do? Please help?

I don't know if restoring as a new phone will fix it, but you have nothing to lose. You can restore as a new phone, check it out, then restore your backup later (as long as you don't sync the restored phone).

This got so bad, that I reformatted my entire drive, reinstalled all of the Apple programs from scratch, and then only select third party ones that I always use (Microsoft Office, OmniFocus, Firefox, Evernote).  That's about it.  The main program that constantly stalls out, though, is Apple Mail. I have 80% of my hard drive free (240GB out of 300GB).  I cannot figure it out, and it's driving me nuts.  Any suggestions?

Dear Hampton, I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Pro and it seems to be a RAM problem. I took it to the Genius Bar and sadly the truth, which the Genius bar guys were reluctant to admit, is that there are issues with the way the OS manages RAM, failing to clear Inactive memory and keep Free memory at a healthy level. If you go to the Activity Monitor and check the system memory I bet you will find that whenever you're seeing the "Exited: Killed: 9" lines one after the other as posted, you Free Memory would have been gobbled up by Inactive Memory. Extra memory would seem to be the permanent solution, sadly, and Apple charge an arm and a leg for it. Or you may have to live like I am at the moment, i.e. having the Activity Monitor permanently on the dock to keep an eye on Inactive Memory. When Inactive Memory gets too big I launch Terminal (Utilities) and type "purge." It frees up memory by clearig Inactive memory so that your machine's memory is as fresh as it is soon after you've started it. Good luck

  • Apple mail freezes constantly under Mavericks

Every since I upgraded to Mavericks last year, Apple Mail constantly freezes. It opens, I generally can get mail, but if I leave it open for a bit, it either stops receiving mail or when I try to send an email it freezes. The only way out is to force quit, and most times the only way to get it to work again is to restart. This does not happen on my wife's account so it appears not to be a system wide problem. I did try a few suggestions posted on here in the past and got some temporary relief, but problem still persists. Have considered trying to migrate my admin account to a new desktop account to see if that helps, but haven't had the time (and could use some good instructions for moving things). Don't want to upgrade to Yosemite as need to use some programs that aren't capatible.
My system is a MacPro, with 8BG RAM, OS 10.9.5. Also, use Suitcase and most of the Adobe Creative Suite quite often. Have noticed that freezing often increases if I leave an Adobe program open while Mail is open. Wondering if a font could be a culprit??
    Any suggestions appreciated

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding

Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.

Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
    1) deleting plist and font cache files
    2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
    3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.
