Word freezing?

hello, I bought an intel iMac 20" not too long ago & installed MS office on it. The Programs seem to run fine, but when I quit out of word the the menu bar will appear blank where it was, I can still tab over to the Word application & it also says it's open in the dock. So it really just closes all the Word menus & whatever documents I have open & then hangs...I have to force quit to get it to fully close. Is anyone else having this problem while running word through rosetta? & is there any way to fix it?

I have the same problem. It doesn't happen all the time, but often Word won't fully quit -- it freezes, and I have to "Force Quit" Word via the Apple menu. It's not a big deal, but it is somewhat annoying. I have the same problem with Adobe Photoshop CS2: it doesn't always fully quit, it freezes, and must be forced to quit. These are the only two apps that I have this problem with, and the only PowerPC apps on my iMac, so I assume it's an issue with Rosetta or apps running under Rosetta. Like I said, it's not a big deal, but it is annoying.

  • Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding

Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.

Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
    1) deleting plist and font cache files
    2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
    3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.

  • 2013 word crashes when "save as" .Word freezes "not responding after a few minutes.

2013 word crashes  when using the "save as" command. It does save the document but crashes. After working for 3 minutes or so on a document the programme will stop running with the screen frozen. Have to use the windows task manager to close.
Any ideas? Very disappointed as I have already also spent a day trying to get outlook to work using all the advice on these forums. Just not impressed. I'm I going to have the same issues with excel?

    Hi,
In regarding of the issue, it may be caused some reason, let's try to narrow down the root cause with the following methods:
1.Try disable all the add-ins to see if this behavior could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins, if this behavior won't occur with all the add-ins disabled, we can enable them one by one to find out which one might cause the issue.
2.Try repair your Office as a quick fix
    3.Try start Word in

    4.Try configure Windows in

  • MS-Word Freezes in Snow

I use MS-Word extensively for collaborative work, ...I mean I try to use MS-Word...
Initially it would freeze with any attempt to paste from the system clipboard, now it freezes with 1st attempt to edit...
...currently using MS-Word running in Windows XP via RDP, printing/rendering documents not as good, but I can work...
I've cleaned font book, and my IT guy insures me he did a clean install of MS-Office.
    Help.

It looks like it is time to start whacking on Office preferences.
Go to your home folder / Library / Preferences and round up every plist that references a Microsoft app. Be sure that you are not running any Office application. Don't forget the ones in the Microsoft folder either.
Move them to a folder on your desktop for safe keeping. Restart and launch just Word and let it do its thing. Check to be sure it does not blow a bunch of fonts into your home folder / Library / Fonts directory.
All those plists you moved will get created new as needed. The ones I find usually at the root of Office problems are the ones with "Font" in their name.
I will allow the following, I had a workstation at a remote office that any Office app would crash when opened. I did the above, ran disk utility, removed and reinstalled Office 2004, and removed any third party QuickTime addons. Nothing helped until I reformatted the drive and reinstalled the OS and all apps. The Console logs pointed me to an error with a library used by the OS.
Also, once a third party addon for QuickTime was found to crash Word. Never understood the complete interaction there, I mean come on, Word uses QuickTime? But once I removed it, Office behaved itself again.

  • Word freezing constantly

I am running Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac and Word is freezing many times a day. Every time I try to open a document it will freeze on me. I have a macbook 2.16 GHz 2GB running Leopard. Anyone else having problems with Word in Leopard?

I too, have had the Word 2004 freeze problem with Leopard 10.5.2 as also has a friend with an iMac. It seems to be a bug in Spaces execution. Having designated a home space for Word I found that if I drag several Word docs to another space some of them freeze while others are Okay.
Until Apple comes up with a fix for this Spaces problem, best solution is to quit Spaces altogether if you want to use Word.
I never had this problem with Desktop Manager.

  • Why will my macbook air not save a word document without word freezing up and not responding?

I recently got a Macbook Air.  Whenever I try to save a word document I get the colored pinwheel.  After the colored pinwheel appears, I go into force quit and see that Microsoft Word is not responding.  This happens every time I try to save a word document.  To test the issue I tried to save a blank word document to see if I was just trying to save too much.  Even with the blank document I got the pinwheel and the application was not responding.  I have had macs before and none of them have had any issues.  Please Help!

Try using Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities folder) to Repair Permissions.

  • Word freezing on 'save'

Word (Mircrosoft Word 2004 - V 11.3.8) froze whenever I tried to save and the only way out was to force quit.  I found a post describing a similar problem and learned that Apple is aware of the problem that developed after downloading the latest Security Update.  A link to another download was provided by a reader who suggested a 'fix' - with no guarantees, of course (RosettaFix_V3).  I downloaded and installed the RosettaFix and it seems to have solved the problem.
My question is this:  Since Apple is aware of the problem, I am assuming an update to fix the problem will be available in the future.  When it is, should I delete the RosettaFix_V3 before installing the update/fix that Apple provides?

BTW, my version of Word '04 is at 11.6.6. You might consider updating your Office apps.

  • Microsoft word isnt working, everytime i try to save a file it freezes and says that theres an error, it doesnt save any of the information i wrote in the document so i end up loosing it...help???

    Hello,
I have recently encountered a problem with my microsoft word. Everytime i try to save a document onto my destop microsoft word freezes and shuts off saying that there has been an error. It tells me to report the error and that it will give me back the information in the document. I have tried multiple times to save the document and the same error keeps happening. I am now unable to save any documents that i have written through microsoft word.
Is there any way that i can fix this?? Please help!

The only thing that I could really suggest is posting in the Microsoft Office for Mac Word forum -> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac.
I've never seen that dialog, personally, but you can bet that some on the Word forum have.

  • Word 2010 freezes when opening a file from a share drive

    Issue:
In our office, one user who is opening up a document from a share folder will experience Microsoft word freezing.
It doesn't display a not responding message
It doesn't lock up and close out automatically
It doesn't show any behavior typical of an issue, however doesn't allow any user input.
Can not type, select anything on menu bar, can not minimize, or close out without using task manager.
You can move the mouse around, however it appears to be frozen.
Everything else works, and nothing shows up in event viewer.
    Issue is intermittent
I have been able to duplicate it with different documents, multiple times, and the only variable I can determine is that the files open in Compatibility mode.
    For troubleshooting currently I've:
    Repaired Office
Deleted the Word Data Registry Key
Deleted the Word Options Registry Key
    Deleted the Normal.dot file
    Restarted the Computer
    Disabled Add-ons
Not sure what I am overlooking and appreciate any help and support.
    Some additional information:
    Office 2010 32-bit
    Windows 7 32-bit

    Hi,
How long does Word 2010 “freeze”? I guess it may cost too much time when you open Word 2010 in a shared folder, so that you think it “freeze”. Please wait for a few more minutes to check if Word 2010 can respond. Maybe it just delay of
    response.
    A similar case is here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ba5114e0-98dd-4b44-a078-373df8899048/word-2007-issue-slow-opening-files?forum=word
    http://withinwindows.com/2008/08/31/taming-microsoft-word-2007s-file-associations-and-document-windows-part-one/
Then you can download this file to local disk and open it again. Able to launch Word 2010 quickly, there may exist anything wrong in communication with this shared folder. You may change path of shared folder. If it doesn’t work, we can
    try to disable SMBv2.
How to disable SMB 2.0 temporarily:

If Word crash still appears on local disk, we can analyze crash file. To further help you, please upload this file into Onedrive and shared the link here. Also, you can try to analyze dump by yourself if you would like to:

  • Captivate 8 Freezes When Printing Handouts to Word 2013

Printing handouts to Word freezes Captivate 8 when the progress bar reaches 90%. At this point, via the Windows task manager, I gather that Word is asking to save both the .normal template and a file 'Adobe Captive.dotm' in the gallery folder. Clicking the save button has no effect, other than messages noting that these files are locked or read only.
I am able to work around this by first starting Word as an administrator (and leaving it running) then starting Captivate as an administrator. But this only works for me because I own my hardware. This will be an issue for corporate users lacking admin rights on their PCs.
The issue does not resolve permanently after doing the above workaround. Rather, as soon as I am not logged in as an admin, the issue recurs. Printing Step by Step docs to Word works without the workaround, possibly because the Word formatting is rudimentary. I have tried several output locations on the C: drive, desktop, etc. with the same results.
I am running Webroot antivirus, Windows 8, on an i7 ultrabook with ample memory and drive space. Adobe personnel, this issue is noted in Case #0185556636.
    Thanks!

If you navigate to the EXE files for Captivate and Word in the Program Files folder, right click the EXE and set the option in the Compatibility tab to Run As Administrator, then these applications should always launch with Administrator privileges.
You are correct that corporate users will not likely be able to do this as most corporate systems are locked down to a point where common users do not have any level of admin privileges.  There are times when Captivate will simply NOT work well for those users.

  • Adobe pro 9.2 export to doc causes word to freeze

    Hi,
I have a PDF that I need to convert back to a word document.  I have Adobe Professional 9.2 running on Windows XP Pro SP3.  I open the PDF, export it to a Word Document.  Adobe goes through all 42 pages.  I try to open the resulting doc file in Word 2003 SP3, I only get the first 18 pages and word freezes at page 16.  Word won't do anything.  page 16 is just like the other pages.  I have to open task manager and kill winword.exe.  I have tried changing the various export settings and every combination I have tried causes word to freeze.  What is wrong?
    Thanks,

The only practical way to add them is to just add the pages. It sounds like you are trying to edit in Acrobat that is a bear of a problem. It is not an editor and the editing features should only be used as a last resort. You really should get the original documents and combine those, then make a new PDF. Another possibility is to save to WORD, text, or other format, combine the files, then create another PDF. Of course, you may likely lose formating and stuff when you save to WORD. Think of a PDF as a paper document (that kind of final form) and you have the idea. When we used to do this with typing, it meant that a whole page would have to be modified as a minimum.

  • My Applications keep Freezing - Brand New Mid-2010 iMac.  Please Help

Hello - I am extremely frustrated because I just received my brand new iMac in the mail (27" i7 2.93GHZ / 2 TB HD / 4GB 2x2 SDRAM) and my applications keep freezing.
Let me give an example -
I keep trying to open iPhoto so that I can import and export photos from my other Mac and my iPhone. Just about any time I do any big upload, the whole iPhoto freezes on me and I have to force quit.
Another example (the one that is bugging me most right now): I am trying to paste 3 pages of text into a word document in Microsoft Word, and every time I attempt to do this, Word freezes.
I understand these are both rather minor in the grand scheme of things, but I just got this fricken thing and I'm hoping I can take some measure to avoid my applications freezing... Do I not have enough memory for running these simple day-to-day tasks? I was thinking about buying 2x 4GB OWC memory to make my computer 12GB instead of 4GB. Please help - I'd love to hear any opinions. Should I take it in? Or is it a simple fix? Even when I first booted my computer there was lag getting the introduction information to load.

    Dang...
I was hopeful that this would have solved the problem. Unfortunately, it must be a software problem of some sort. I reset my PRAM(?) and did the disk utility cleanup or whatever it is called. I do appreciate you giving your 2 cents. Does anybody else have any ideas? Microsoft Office is still freezing up when I try to paste something from the internet -- Oddly enough, it isn't happening when I'm posting text from some websites, but is from others. The firewall is turned off, so I don't think its a security issue. Please help! I need some way to put my academic transcript in a word file so that I can email it for reference, so this is kind of urgent! Thank you.
Should I try a software update?

  • Many applications keep freezing on me/ external hardrive

I have an ibook g4 running Mac OS 10.3.9. I have a 30 gb hard drive with 6 gb of space remaining. I have already downloaded the application "what size" to find out where most of my hard drive space is going-- itunes. Itunes (and nearly all of the applications I use photoshop, safari, firefox, ichat, finder, word) freeze on me when I try to do something about it. This freezing is happening very regularly. I am hoping to free up more space on my hard drive by "consolidating my library" onto a 350 gb external hard drive by Seagate. However, when ever I try to do this on itunes, itunes always freezes and I have to force quit, or if I'm lucky it will freeze for a little bit and tell me "copying music failed. the disk could not be read from or written to."
So I guess my questions are these: is there any way to make 10.3.9 less "cranky"and to know why so many applications are freezing on me? One application is only 3.8 mg big and isn't very processer demanding, but it still won't let me even open it. Opening the applications from my back up on the external drive can occasional bide me some "unfrozen" time, but it's slow and inconvienent. Is there a better way to get my itunes to the external hard drive? (If I try to copy and paste itunes into the seagate, finder freezes.)
Right now upgrading is not an option. Thank you for any one who read all of this!
    ibook g4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    ibook g4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I just did very much the same thing, because I had very much the same problem, though with a G5. What sort of hard drive do you have (how does it coneect to your iBook?) I plug mine in with USB. I didn't try to copy iTunes as a whole to my external, what I did was go to MacHD>User>Music>iTunes>iTunes Copy THAT folder, it will move all your music without trying to put an application on an HD that has no OS. If it still won't copy to your XHD, have you formatted it for Mac? It sounds like you have already moved some stuff to it, so I am assuming so, but if not, go to disk utility (with the XHD plugged in and happening) in Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and format it there. I would give you more step by step, however, my disk utility just froze along with Firefox, which won't even FQ. I have had it up to my ear lobes with this annoying crap.
Once I had my XHD formatted to Mac, I moved everything on to it from the system folder and user library folder, all my mailboxes individually, all my music (not apps, just music and mailboxes), and everything I wanted to keep. It took a few days, because the computer was liking to freeze up, but I got it done. Then I did a full out erase and reinstall the OS, without losing everything. I was not able to install the OS on the external, because apparently you can not boot up from an external HD with my system, although maybe some set ups you can. Because there is no OS on the XHD, I cannot move applicatinos to it, but I have all my upgrade .pkg's stored there, and I back up all my files regularly (mailboxes, calendars, music, documents) in case I should need to do it again. I have had to reinstall my software 4 times in the last year, I kid you not, and 3 of them were about a month ago. It is nice to have the back up of an XHD. Now Firefox has left me and won't Force Quit, and Disk Utility won't even admit that it is not responding!
    Good Luck!!

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 crashes Word 2003

I'm running Acrobat 8.1.2 on Windows XP Pro SP 2. It used to work fine (had it for over a year) scanning in documents, running OCR and exporting to Word, but suddenly and for no discernible reason Word freezes if I try to scroll past the first page of an exported document or run the clear formatting command.
I've searched the forums and seen this problem documented with Acrobat 9 and/or Vista, but nothing yet for Acrobat 8 and/or XP.
I have not recently downloaded any updates (I kill the Updater whenever I catch it) and the app was working fine until today. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it makes a difference. An Adobe engineer has confirmed that this doc has revealed a bug in both Acrobat Pro 8 and 9.
