Word icons suddenly empty (blank)

After updating to the latest version of M*soft Office all the icons of my Word documents have vanished, they appear as blank white symbols on the desktop. Excel and the others are not affected.
Okay, I know there is a user forum at M.´s Mac site but it seems that I cannot even register there without getting into an endless cycle (Please register and type the letters you see below - thank you for registering - now please register and type the letters you see below...". Somehow it fits, though.
Rather than being dependent on that way of spending my time I'd rather put up with these blank things.
But before I do: Maybe someone here has an idea how to restore the Word icons?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for asking! Well, the update was successful, Word opens all these documents without a problem. Also, I defined Word again as the standard application for ".doc". Then I switched on and off again the option to show a preview in the icon.
Of course I would run the updater again if M-soft would only allow me to do so: "No application found to be updated". Okay.
The only sure way would be to re-install Office from scratch and then install the myriads of updaters that have appeared since then. So that is why I hoped to find someone with the same problem...

I'm having a problem sending a word doc via email. I have Mac for Office 08, and I'm using Mavericks OS. When I save the document as a .doc or .docx, and send it to someone, (doesn't matter if its safari, chrome or firefox or on my yahoo or gmail accounts) they receive it as a blank document. Yet, when I open it on my Mac, it has a "word" icon and I can read it. How do I fix?

I suggest you post on the Microsoft Mac forums since it's their software you're having issues with.

  • When attempting to "save as" a word document and selecting micrsoft word as the "save as type", it no longer will save it in a word icon document, the icon is just a blank document symbol and thus cannot email this document as before.

    Here are my two cents.
The resources defining the file formats which Pages may import or export are stored in the file :
    Macintosh HD:Applications:iWork '09:Pages.app:Contents:Info.plist
Assuming that you didn't installed the Developer tools, go to my iDisk (address below)
    Download :
    Pref Setter.app.zip
    Unpack the archive.
Open the file "Info.plist" with Pref Setter.
Open the entry entitled :  CFBundleDocumentsTypes
    Open the items 9, 10, 11, 12
    The normal contents is :
Double check the parameters available for items 9 & 10.
What you get may be linked to some oddity in these resources.

  • Docx word icon not present

I have Office Pro 2010 installed yet none of my word documents created in 2010 appear as word docs in my files they appear as DOCX (a sort of blank icon) and it keeps asking me which programme I want to open it with
I select word naturally. How do I get all my docs
in my files to appear with the word icon?
If I want the word icon to appear I have to save the doc as Office 93 - 2003 doc which is silly.
I hope someone can help me
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please take a try with the suggestions offered by tony4554 :
    QUOTED:
After many hours of research, installs, uninstalls, reinstalls, repairs, reregistering word etc. etc. I was able to add the Word 97 and 2003 right click menu option by just adding a NullFile string to the “Word.Document.8” key under the
.doc key in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc but it would not do anything under the .docx key.
I wanted the 2010 docx of office 2010 functionality.
I have found out what I had to do to get back the Right-click New Microsoft Word Document function of Office 2010 in Windows Explorer and on the Desktop.
I found that four keys were missing in the registry in comparison with my other computer’s installation of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.
Remember to back up the .docx key by exporting it to a safe folder so that you could have it if necessary.
    I opened the registry to – HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx
Steps creating keys are done on the left window pane in the registry.
    1)     Below the .docx key I create the first key that was missing by right clicking on the “.docx” key then go down to New, then left click on Key and name it “OpenWithList” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
      (value not set)
    2)     Inside of the “OpenWithList” create the second key. Right click on the “OpenWithList” key then go down to New, then left click on Key and name this new key “WordPad.exe”
    without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
      (value not set)
    3)     Right click on the “.docx” key then go down to New, then left click on Key to create the third key and name it “Word.Document.12” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
      (value not set)
    4)     Right click on the “Word.Document.12” key then go down to New, then left click on Key to create the fourth key and name it “ShellNew” without the quotes.
Inside of that key is the automatically created String Value (default)  REG_SZ
      (value not set)
The next thing to do is to create a string value newly created “ShellNew” key but this is done in the window on the right side.
    5)     Left click on ShellNew in the left window to select the key. Now in the window on the right side; Right click in the empty space go to New then select String Value. Name
the new string  “NullFile” without the quotes, Type is REG_SZ Leave the data empty.
    6)     Lastly, in the left window left click on key .docx, In the right side window make sure that the data of the (Default) string is Word.Document.12 – To change it, doubleclick
on the string named (Default) , a window will open up and you change the data value to Word.Document.12 (My data value was “docx_auto_file”)
You are done. Close the registry.  Test the right click context menu now.

  • "Effects" panel empty/blank in CS6?

I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Mac OS 10.9.3. Every time I open Adobe Premiere Pro, regardless of the project, the Effects Panel (not the control panel) is empty/blank. There is nothing typed in the search field, and if I do type something or click a type filter icon, the side bar for that panel appears and changes sizes. Creating a new Bin does nothing. Importing Preset does nothing.
From another user account, the effects panel appears normal, so the problem is user specific. I've already had to create another user account from scratch last time I had a problem with the program (instant crash while loading in splash screen), and I really would like to avoid doing this again. I've deleted preferences manually and by starting the program holding Shift+Alt. I've emptied the cache. I've repaired permissions. Same problem persists.

Did things one at a time before, but this time I repaired permissions, then Trashed the 2 Premiere .com preference files and the Premiere and the PProHeadless (the one thing I did not delete before) folders in Preferences>Adobe in the User Library. Trashed the User>Documents>Adobe>Premiere Folder. Then I manually deleted all the Cache folders. Doing it all (or some combination) seemed to do the trick. Effects now show in the panel.

  • Docx file association is set up correctly but does not display Word icon when viewing in Explorer

Problem with MS Word as part of MS Office 2007 Professional Plus running on Windows 7.
When I view a folder in Windows Explorer all docx files show up with a plain white icon, not a Word icon. I have done the following:
Start > Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
Then scrolled down the display and selected the docx extension - it already shows as Microsoft Office Word - clicked on Change Program, reset the program to WordPad, then back in the display clicked on the Change Program icon again. This tiime I reset it
    to Microsoft Office Word.
However when I go back into Explorer the icon has not changed. Even if I close it down and restart it again. And even after a reboot.
Also, I have checked the individual properties of the docs files, using Explorer, and they do say Open With Microsoft Word. So no problem there either.
Any suggestions welcome as to how to change it so the icon displayed is Word not blank.

    Hi orchestrand,
I have the same problem as you and after searching for a day for a definitive solution, i have found this one that works on another forum located here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html
The reason seems to be that icons stored have for some reason disappeared (inexplicably?). The solution is also stupidly simple after i've tried every suggestion in this thread.
    1) go to start menu and search for: cmd
    2) right click on cmd and choose "run as administrator" (--> this causes command line to change from C:\users\<account name> to change to: C:\windows\system32).
    3) turn off everything you are doing after saving your work because now you will be closing explorer.exe
    4) in the command line enter each command separately and with enter following each line
    taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    DEL IconCache.db /a
    shutdown /r
    5) after the restart, everything should be back to normal.
This is a complete fix for the problem and not a work around and I can verify that it worked for me. Good luck all.
also, this is a repost, but i think we have the same problem

  • Elements 2.0=Icon suddenly goes generic document; any issues?

With Mac OS 10.4.11 .... With PS Elements 2.0, in use for 4 years--it's all I need--the dock icon suddenly went generic, like a blank page. Is this a minor hiccup? Aside from reversing it, are there any lurking issues I should know, repair or avoid?

I would go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist
    PSE 2 paths
PSE 2 settings (may be preferences for PSE 2--I'm using leopard so it's not installed anymore)
repair permissions and see if it works right again

  • MS Word Icons

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but since it deals with Pages...
I don't have Word on my Mac, but I export to .doc for compatibility for my school's computers. When I export to Word, the icons are a blank sheet of paper (the Word files are set to open with Pages by default). I would like to know a way, if any, to make all .doc files to adopt a different type of icon that would be set by default.
If any body knows a way to do this, I'd really appreciate to know. Thanks!
    -DJ

No, once you change the default program to open Word files to Pages or don't have Word installed, you will get a generic while document icon.

  • T41 screen suddenly goes blank - possible overheating?

Having an intermittant problem with my T41, and wondering if anyone has any idea as to the cause.
Most of the time, I use it in a docking station. Sometimes, after I've been using it for a while, the screen suddenly goes blank. There's still hard drive activity, as the light keeps on flashing, but the screen stays blank no matter what I do. The only way out is to do a hard reboot via the power button and, when I switch it back on again, the screen comes back, but usually some of the desktop icons have changed places. One time, the screen resolution had also been reduced to 800x600, and I had to reset it back to 1024x768.
I have noticed recently that, when it does this little screen shutdown trick, the fan doesn't seem to be operating and, if I remove the computer from the docking station, it does seem a bit warm underneath. Then, when I reboot the computer, the fan kicks in right away and seems to be pushing a lot of heat out of the vent in the side.
So does anyone know if this is an overheating issue caused by the fan not kicking in when it should, or could there be another cause? One thing that has me confused is that, according to the Windows fault reporting system, it says its a video driver fault and I should update the driver. So can anyone tell me just what the problem really is?
    Edit:
I've been able to find one of the manuals as a PDF, and it seems like the computer is unexpectedly hibernating due to the CPU overheating. Unfortunately, that's all it says, and doesn't give any advice as to how to fix the problem. Does that sound like a correct diagnosis?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Don't know why this topic has been marked as "solved" when it's still an ongoing problem - I certainly didn't mark it as such!
Installed the program you suggested, and ran a few tests. From those, it looks like the issue could be the CPU, not the GPU, that's been overheating and causing the hibernation. With the computer just idling, the CPU temperature reports about 35-38 degrees C, while the GPU sits around the 40-44 degrees C mark. Playing a HD flash video, the GPU temperature went up to around 50 degrees C, while the CPU went up to 69 degrees C. At that point, the fan hadn't kicked in, so I switched from Smart to Manual mode, at which point it started in Mode 7 and brought the CPU temperature back down.
I then ran the test again a few more times with different videos and, with Smart mode selected again, the fan did kick in automatically at around 66 degrees C on the CPU temperature, but only in Mode 1. This seem to just stabilise the temperature, not bring it down, and I had to go to Manual mode to get a higher fan speed.
Before I installed the fan control program, I don't think the fan was kicking in at all, as there was no sign of air coming out of the vent. The only time the fan did kick in was after the reboots, and then only for a minute or so. The program seems to show that both the CPU temperature sensor and the fan are working OK, but it appears that they aren't talking to each other properly. Any ideas why this could be?

  • All my files folder suddenly empty, what to do?

all my files folder suddenly empty, what to do?

    Kiara19,
What do you see in Finder when you try to open such a folder. If you see a big blue folder icon, then there is something mixed up with your user privileges.
Highlight the folder, and press CMD+I to get the info window.
At the bottom of that window is a section called "Sharing & Permissions". In there you'll see some users and the Privilege associated with that user. If you have the Privilege of 'Read only' then you need to change this to 'Read & Write'.
To do this, click on the closed lock-icon at the bottom right of the info window. You'll be asked to enter your administrator username and password (mostly these are the same as your login credentials). After that, you can change the privilege of the user to 'Read & Write'.
Before closing the info window, also tick the gear-icon on the bottom of the info window and select 'Apply to enclosed items...'. Depending on how many files and subfolders there are in this folder, it might take some time to change all privileges.
After all changes are done you can close the info window, and all your files should be visible to you again.
I hope this solved your issue.

  • Files open empty/blank

I am working with the most recient version of Dreamweaver CC(13.2 build 6466) on Mac os 10.9.2. Most of my files reside on servers in the building connected through eithernet. I have editied these file on the file servers for years and not had a problem. All of a sudden when I try to edit them, while they are on the server, Dreamweaver opens them to empty/blank files. I know they are not blank because I can open them in other text editors and the code is there. When I copy the files to my desktop the file opens with out a problem. I don't have my pages setup as sites because that dosn't work in my Magento work flow. As far as I know nothing about my network has changed.

I Deleted the cache and then renamed the Configuration folder and neither had any effect. I have a virtual Windows 7 machine on this system. The Win 7 system is hosted with Parallels. I relized that the file(s) that I was trying to access was not on a server, those files seem to work, it was on this virtual win 7 system. I have recently upgraded the Mac OS to Marverics and in that proccess I updated Parallels. I am going to check with Parallels to see if the issue resides with them.
