FH just isn't a word processor. For instance, it has no
concept of bulleted
text. You can create your own bullets inline, but it doesn't
treat that as
any sort of structured content for you.

Hi all
I read an interview in a design magazine with an Adobe
executive. Basically what he sayed is that Freehand will be
supported but not be developped further on. In other words, there
will be no Universal version. In other words, the day I will buy to
an Intel Mac, Freehand dies for me.
In other words, every Freehand will need to switch over to
Illustrator. Which would be fine with me, but as a 12+ years
Freehand user (I used Illustrator for about 3 years before that),
this will be a hard move.
I'm sure Illustrator offers functions that I don't find in
Freehand. I'm looking forward to discover them. On the other hand,
I am sure I will miss some great features that I use regularly in
Freehand, such as:
- The possibility to generate several pages in one documents,
even with different sizes (i.e. I can create letterhead, business
cards, envelopes, compliment slips etc. for one client in the same
doc, and every page comes with the right dimensions)
- creating rectancles with rounded edges: different radiuses
on every single corner. Illustrator only offers the option of using
the same radius on all 4 corners.
- the "transform" command, that also offers a "copy" function
(ie. I can copy elements while transforming them)
- easier handling of guides: I hate the fact that I have to
unlock guides in Illustrator in order to move them: Freehand offers
a separate layer for guides which allows me to lock that layer, if
I want the guides to be locked.
Does anyone know if there are plans at Adobe to implement
some of those great features into Illustrator, now that we know
that Freehand will slowly die?> Does anyone know if there are plans at Adobe to
implement some of those
> great
> features into Illustrator, now that we know that
Freehand will slowly die?
No one knows that. All we can do is guess.
My guess is, no, they don't have any ambitions to do that.
For two reasons:
1) they don't have to (AI is pretty much the only viable
option for
pro-designers to switch to)
2) some features like multiple-pages exist in other products
that want you
to buy (like InDesign)

Printing and Office2004 problems
Hi all,
I have some problems that i need to solve, I'm using Pb g4 12" 1.3GHZ, 1.25 gig ram. Epson R1800 and HP PSC 1020 both connected using aiport express.
First, printing problem. Everytime i try to print, from photoshop, word, preview, freehand mx, everything, it takes a long time only to open the print dialog window. After setting up my printing, it also takes way too long to reach the printer (both using airport and direct usb/firewire). Beside that, everything is normal. My concern is, my friends' PBs arent like that. Whenever they press apple+p or click print, the dialog showed right away. And they connect to their printer just fine, not like me.
Second, Microsoft Office 2004 problem. Takes forever to open word and excel. I uninstall and install them and then update them, just help me a little. I have so many fonts and i realized that they are freezing on "optimizing font menu.........." So i deleted my aftermarket fonts and it helps a lot (I'm currently using fontbook but downloaded and planning to use fontExplorer X). Do fonts and fontbook have anything to do with this?
Third, slow booting. I know that it's a common topic but i've tried so many things and i still need to wait 5-8 minutes just to start up. I did disk utility, cleaning log files, checking my start up. I use only 20% of my HD as I store my musics and artworks in external HDs. The thing is... my PB booted faster after I deleted my fonts collection, but not fast enough.
Thank you in advance!!! =)

PowerBook G4 12 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1.25gig RAM and affection =PHi,
Thanks for your reply. I will update my drivers eventhough i think they are all the newest one. The problem is this freezing condition doesn't only occur while im using airport. It also happens when i connect them using usb/firewire. I asked my girlfriend to install the drivers on her PB G4 15" and printed something in my house. Her computer was just working fine and fast, way faster than mine... and I don't think it's a hardware issue or maybe it is.
thanks -
Your Favorite FreeHand Features You Would Like To See In Illustrator
I am really curious to hear about the favorite features that Freehand users think would be important additions to Illustrator.
I would also be interested in hearing why you think this feature is better than the way Illustrator handles the same task, unless you the feature just doesn't exist in Illustrator.Just found your question, Wade. Many thanks for asking since it is very encouraging to know that Adobe is aware of Freehand (FH) users' frustrations, beyond the usual learning curve challenge. Many CS3 Illustrator (AI) features are terrific and not available in FH, but the frustration of seeing FH's many intuitive options disappear from our desk top is difficult. I'd hardily amen the words of Ken Nielsen: ... 'incorporate EVERY feature possible from Freehand.' I am quickly improving my ability to exploit AI's advantages but still get frustrated that many of FH options are not available in AI. Here are a few and will try to add others later:
PAGE SIZE TOOL: I cannot change the page size with FH's page tool. To get a page size to fit new art work I have to guess and run the risk of something not being open and not adjusting if I move my work. This is important to keep the white border from appearing in exports, although I have found that making a Clipping Path can solve this. Why not have the FH option, however, of diagonally dragging the corner of the page and fit it the size of the page to the art work?
PEN TOOL DRAWING: The pen tool does not have an option that automatically makes beautifully curved lines (which always and exactly fit the complex map borders I draw), and simply by holding down Option in FH while clicking the pen tool (dragging out in AI is nice sometimes, but I had to buy a Big Wacom tablet to do what FH does naturally).
OPEN/CLOSED PATH: I always knew in FH if my path was 'closed' or 'open.' I know fill does not depend upon this in AI but in my work to know this is very important.
SWATCH BOX: In AI I have to remember the short cut or travel around my 30" screen to change between stroke and fill. In FH it was right in the color palette where it should be. As in the case of layers below, my choice of viewing swatches (small list) does not stick and I have to choose again every time I reopen AI. Have you thought of layers for swatches for those of us who have many?
GRAPHIC STYLES: I thought AI had a 'Redefine' option in the Graphic Style but can't find it. Since AI does not allow the editing of a graphic style in the Style palette, I have to make a new style and toss the old one. FH has both of the possibilities (redefine and editing).
PASTE INSIDE/CUT CONTENTS: Paste Inside, etc. was great in FH. I understand how it works in AI but to have the old FH option, and edit inside (hold down Option) were so easy.
LAYERS: AI's great layer/sub layer/sub layer organization is especially exciting for me since my 300-400 layers in FH can be nicely 'compacted.' This has vast potential and already I cannot live without it. However, you should demonstrate how good it is to new users rather than simply imply 'you'll get used to it.' I have tons of docs with tons of layers (maps and charts).
COMPRESS ALL SUBLAYERS NEEDED: I have my layers collapsed so that my palette is very easy to use, *but* when I close the doc and bring it up again they are all open again and I have to go through and close them. Make them 'stick' so they open the way we close them, and 2) put in a way to deal with sub layers so that we can make all of a certain set of sub layers visible/invisible or locked/unlocked without affecting other layers. Yes, I can drag my mouse down the list, but when I have 600 map city names in their individual sub layers that is a bit much.
A BIT OF TROUBLESHOOTING: A graphic style fill would not change (disappear) although fill color was nothing. I even use 'Break Link to Graphic Style' and tried again. Something is wrong since the stroke changes color if I choose it manually or via a style, but the fill remains the same (one of my styles = 50% red) although I change it many all or via the Graphic Style palette. Thus it appears the the fill is stuck in one mode, or rather two since it will change color or change to gradient, but it will not disappear and always default to the 50% red. I tried quitting the program and bringing it up again, and also rebooting. No change. Finally, after long hours I tried putting the graphic on a new layer and it was okay. Thus, it appears that something can be 'caught' on a layer, in this case the fill color, or rather the fact that I could not get rid of the fill color, no matter what it was. I do have 310 layers in THE doc, most as sub layers under main layers.
Must add that AI's Opacity, Layers, and other features are terrific. I finally have gotten over my reaction in the move from FH to AI, especially since CS3 version sped up the very slow CS2 version. Again, do everything you can to get all of FH features into AI. FH is a tremendous program which relatively few people knew of and exploited. If Adobe wants to create another real success story, follow Ken Nielsen's advice (as you are doing with your question, Wade.) -
Can't Print from Freehand via Adobe Driver
For no obvious reason I can no longer print from Freehand to pdf using the Adobe driver.
I'm using Freehand 11.0.1 on Windows 7 (64-bit). Our team has the same problem on Windows XP with Freehand 11.0.1, and Windows 7 (32-bit) with Freehand 11.0.2. All of the above stopped working this week. We still can print to pdf using Cute PDF. But we really would like to get back to using Adobe which gives us more control over the output generated.
Here is the content of Adobe log file:
---------- start of log file ----------------
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: --nostringval-- ]%%
Stack:
{AVec 256 array copy /f1 /|______Gen_Arial dup RF findfont def f1
DoPatch}
false
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
----------- end of log file ----------------
The problem does not occur using the same Adobe print driver with MS Word, PowerPoint, or Adobe Illustrator CS6.
Has anyone else seen this or have a clue how to resolve it?
Any help is very much appreciated!!!!!
Thanks!
JohnDid you update your Acrobat/Distiller application before it stopped working? My first thought was that something was changed last week to have this happen and to go back and recreate what that might have been. Sounds like an Adobe update.

HP Laserjet P1005 print in Text Edit but nor in Word or Adobe Reader
I just bought a HP LaserJet P1005 printer, it does print in all the aplications that camed with the operating system Mac OS X 10.4.10 ( Text Edit, Ical, Iweb, Sherlock, etc) but It does not print in any other aplication ( Open Office, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Freehand, etc).
I have already installed last version of the HP driver and also updated the OS to 10.4.11 but there is no difference.
Because the printer is on guarantee I did call to HP, but they said that if the printer print in aplications lake text edit, the printer is ok, so the would not replace it.
Anyway I do not know if other printer with the same model would work or if it would have the same problem.
Can anybody help me?
Thanks a lot.I see that the original poster has returned the printer but figured I'd post in case others are having this issue.
Same problem here: Intel iMac, latest updates applied (Tiger), brand new printer, Office Mac 2004
Verifying disk, repairing permissions does not solve this problem. Trashing all the Microsoft preferences and reinstalling didn't work. I have a slew of these same iMacs running Office X and they print with no problems so I removed Office 2004 and went back to X and still had the same problem.
It's bizarre. I was able to print an Excel file but when I try to print a Word document the printer window jumps to "Jobs Stopped" a few seconds after receiving the job. Clicking "Start Jobs" results in it jumping back to "Jobs Stopped" I downloaded the driver package from HP thinking maybe it had been updated since the CD that came with the printer was pressed but no luck.
There is another post around here in which the poster said if s/he clicks Print Preview and then clicks the Print icon there the document will print. I'll try that tomorrow. The other post has some quotes from HP support that are not very helpful. -
R.I.P. FreeHand
The depth of my hatred for Adobe tonight is nearly boundless.
Like most longtime FreeHand users, I greeted Adobe's purchase of
FreeHand with a sense of foreboding and dismay. I hoped that Adobe
would continue to support and develop this extraordinary drawing
tool. Stupid me. FreeHand ran circles around that lumpy piece of
junk called Illustrator. Always did, always will. Macromedia knew
this when they bought FreeHand from Aldus (Remember them? Aldus
pretty much invented desktop publishing), eons ago, way back in the
1990s. And then Adobe got so big and powerful that the FTC allowed
Adobe to buy FreeHand and gut Macromedia's dead carcass. Corporate
feeding frenzies rule our nasty, modern world.
FreeHand MX 11.0.x was working well up to or around Mac OSX
10.2.x. I recently bit the bullet and "upgraded" to OSX 10.4.x (aka
"Tiger" -- argh, Apple, ditch the cat names, OK? Since most of
those big cats are on the brink of extinction, naming your flagship
OS after an endangered species is a weird, ironic marketing
choice).
All hell has broken loose since I "upgraded." Simply turning
on FreeHand's "snap to grid" and turning it off again is now
impossible. Adobe offers a lame "TechNotes" workaround that doesn't
truly work.
Adobe doesn't care. And why should it? Adobe only wants us
all to buy their version of some fabulous next new thing -- like
"CS" (aka "Creative Suite" -- an Orwellian doublethink marketing
campaign if ever there was one). Adobe is nothing more than another
money-grubbing corporate nightmare. Customer loyalty and
trustworthy products don't figure in Adobe's bottom line... let
alone respect or commitment to the venerable art of graphic design.
I used to love getting up in the morning. I used to love
turning on my Mac and making art. I thought I was the luckiest man
in the world! I could make art and design and pay my bills! Stupid
naive me.
Hours of my life melted away forever this afternoon. I'll
never get them back. I was just trying to make some graphic design
for a paying client. For every five minutes I spend on an idea
these days, I spend an hour or so trying to make software express
it. The ratio of art to product is crazy... especially considering
the stupid amount of money Adobe charges for products that never do
what Adobe says they'll do. It's all snake oil and trickery.
I wish I could go back to FreeHand 3.1. It was a brilliant
piece of software. R.I.P. FreeHand. Rest in peace. Shame on Adobe.
Shame. I'm tired and sad tonight, and my deadline is shot to hell.
I used to make digital art, but now I'm just another digital ditch
digger. Just another consumer, hooked on this never-ending heroin
spiral of "upgrade" after never-ending "upgrade."
I looked at the very first serious drawing I ever made with a
vector drawing program (FreeHand 2.0) tonight. You can see it
here. From a
purely technical point of view, it's not a bad drawing... and the
technology that made it possible is gone forever. Bought and sold
by the jerks who own the code.
OK. I'm done with this rant. Thanks for reading it. I guess
I'll go check my email now... an inbox full of more image-based
spam peddling pump 'n dump stock market scams. I used to love the
'net, almost as much as I used to love drawing with FreeHand.Greetings and thanks to everyone who's posted to this thread.
Interesting insights and opinions here. Special thanks to those of
you who sent private messages of condolence and support via my
site. I took a few days off and I'm feeling a little better.
I stopped in here off and on and decided to wade in again
with what will probably be another longwinded epic-style post. I
tend toward verbosity, especially with a subject like this. In
addition to raising my blood pressure a notch or two, the subject
of FreeHand's demise sparks some passion in me. This will be a long
post because I want to attempt clarity. Clarity sometimes takes
time.
Navale's post regarding the fact that Adobe charges full
price for a broken FreeHand is spot on, as is darrel's car
metaphor. If GM sold a car, and the engine exploded when a buyer
first turned the key, well, that would be the lead story on the
evening news. Congress would launch an investigation. I think
there's a federal law somewhere that requires carmakers to make
parts available for 10 years after a car is released to the public.
I could be wrong, but I think that's true. Anyway, there's no
parallel in the software world... no protection for consumers. It's
buyer beware and blame the consumer if things don't work as
advertised. While the speed of software development makes a ten
year 'parts' guarantee impractical, I don't think some sort of
mandated guarantee of maybe 3 years is unreasonable.
I appreciate Judy Arndt's post. "Keep in mind that if Adobe
is going to put it's logo on a FreeHand box, the product is going
to have to live up to Adobe standards." Well said, Judy. As for the
EPS, PDF, OpenType, and "old code" issues, well, I could discuss
that at greater length later. The short version is that there are
workarounds which worked prior to Mac OSX 10.4. Adobe's FreeHand
product page states that FreeHand is compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.
I took that statement to be true, without following the "emerging
issues" link. Stupid me. I took Adobe at it's word without reading
the fine money grubbing print.
Adobe has a major PR problem with FreeHand and chooses to
blow it off. Frankly, this astonishes me. Maybe Adobe thinks we'll
just fade away. Maybe Adobe is correct in that assumption. For
better or worse, Adobe now owns FreeHand. FreeHand is a spectacular
vector drawing tool (and I still contend that it runs circles
around Illustrator -- old code and all -- don't even get me started
about Illustrator's lumpy old legacy code). There's a market for
FreeHand and no more competition (thank you FTC; nice to know
you're watching out for consumers -- not).
I know no figures on the number of people who use (and maybe
even love) FreeHand, but I suspect it's easily in the hundreds of
thousands... maybe even millions. Why would Adobe abandon a product
it now owns and shun a substantial market? Maybe it's just
corporate spite? The trouble is, we just don't know. Adobe is
silent. There's a major communication break between Adobe and
FreeHand users. I want somebody at Adobe to tell us the truth...
either Adobe will support and develop FreeHand or ignore and
therefore kill it. I want to read a letter on Adobe's FreeHand web
page from somebody in a position to tell me what the hell is going
on with a product in which I've invested thousands of dollars and
thousands of files... a product I still want to buy.
Quick note to doentz here: Yeah, I loved Fontographer too.
Call me paranoid if you like, but I sometimes think Fontographer
was way too brilliant to be allowed to exist in a market-driven
world where Adobe owns just about every font and there's no room
for people to freely make and distribute their own creations. From
Adobe's point of view, such freedom is way too dangerous.
Capitalism run amok.
Curtcarto's post was interesting. Yes, software development
always takes time. I know this; I've seen it first hand... and
maybe that's what's going on with Adobe FreeHand. The point is, we
don't know! All indications from Adobe don't look good. Adobe is
silent. Adobe still charges full price for a broken FreeHand, but
doesn't list it in its main Products page (you have to dig to the
"view all products" link). If an updated version of FreeHand will
indeed join Adobe's product line - with full support and commitment
- you'd never know it by cruising through Adobe's corporate site.
R.I.P. FreeHand.
Argh. I'm gonna stop typing pretty soon. I'm tired and sad.
Before I go, I want to post a little more background about my life
with FreeHand. Maybe this will help readers understand why I'm so
passionate about FreeHand.
I became aware of FreeHand way back around 1986 - shortly
after Aldus PageMaker launched a revolutionary concept called
"desktop publishing." Prior to that, I made art the old fashioned
way... you know, I threw paint at a canvas or scribbled stuff on
real live paper with pen and ink and oil pastels. I beta-tested
FHv.7 for some of the guys who wrote the original FreeHand code. I
bought FreeHand v1.0 and later used v2.0 at a design firm that
employed me to make illustrations for their clients.
With FreeHand v3.1, Aldus nailed the interface and features.
It was a stunning and elegant piece of work. It made Illustrator
look like the junky copycat it is to this very day. If Adobe
offered a Mac OSX compatible version of FreeHand 3.1, I'd buy it in
two seconds flat. Adobe could market it as "FreeHand Lite" - heh.
And then things started getting ugly and convoluted.
Illustrator was emerging as a serious competitor in the vector art
world, while Aldus was loosing track of everything that made it
great. Too many cooks in the kitchen... it happens all the time.
The dot com bubble started to pop and nobody gave a flying fart
about art and vision or related nonsense. It was all about money.
I beta-tested FreeHand 4.0 (which was code named "Roadrunner"
at the time). It was a wreck... a screaming, flaming car crash. It
pulled the rug out from under every user who had invested time and
money and trust in FreeHand. I told the development team that if it
was released as written, loyal customers would scream bloody
murder, jump ship and buy Illustrator. I said, "If your intention
is to kill FreeHand, release this version immediately."
By this time, Aldus was dead. Macromedia owned Freehand and
released it as FreeHand 5.0. Loyal FreeHand customers screamed
bloody murder, jumped ship and bought Illustrator. FreeHand's
market share (not to mention its art and vision) was a sad memory.
Macromedia dorked around with FreeHand for a decade or so.
Version 5 was pretty dismal, but almost useable. By version 7, it
was almost OK. By versions 9 and 10, it was almost interesting.
Through all these versions, Macromedia didn't fix the stuff that
didn't work in previous versions... they just tacked on new
"features" nobody wanted and nobody used. Illustrator followed the
same development path, but by this time it was too late for
FreeHand. Illustrator ruled.
A buddy of mine just sent me an email. His message punched
through... one of two legitimate emails and 56 spams. He said:
"Maybe its time to start associating Adobe with Microsoft in
software's "Evil Overlord" category."
Argh. Welcome to the future. Adobe launches a new marketing
tool called "Adobe Youth Voices" on its home page. Socially
conscious work that can only be expressed by kids who buy Adobe
products. It's all so sick. -
Customized keyboard shortcuts for microsoft Word not working
Hi,
My Macbook Pro retina 15' with an updated Yosemite iOS 10.10.1 has an american keyboard. I am trying to create keyboard shortcuts for brazilian accent marks to use in Microsoft Word. I went to "system preferences", "keyboard", "shortcuts", "App Shortcuts", added Microsoft Word and, for the brazilian accent mark " ˜ ", which in the original keyboard is obtained with "option+n", I set the shortcut "option+left arrow".
It just does not work. I created other shortcuts for other brazilian accent marks with the other arrows + control but none of them worked.
Can anyone tell me what went wrong?
Thanks!Amy~ Yep the lasso tool was what I verified with another user. 'L' seems to be bound indefinitely to loop through different types of lasso tools and it was annoying them because they just wanted L to be the regular freehand lasso. I removed 'L' from being an option on the polygon lasso and even set it explicitly to SHIFT+L as well as set the lasso tool to a completely different keyboard combo. 'L' still cycled through lassos haha. It needs some fixes.
fertolg~ At least you have a workaround for now. I'd go nuts if I couldn't use keyboard text selection writing code, oy! You're welcome and if you're all set please mark correct so we can filter unanswered. Good luck! -
What is the best way to import Freehand files to InDesign?
Has anyone developed a fast workflow to convert Freehand files intact to InDesign CS3?
Illustrator CS3 will import Freehand files directly, but from there I cant bring editable and formatted text into ID CS3. Formatted text is converted to paths via the clipboard. This is incredibly frustrating.
Till recently I used "Copy Special" within Freehand MX which allowed a reasonably useful way to copy graphics and fully-editable and formatted text across to ID. This is too slow for multiple FH pages however.
Adobe have provided a useful tool to open Freehand files via Illustrator but why on earth didnt they see that many Freehand files are set up as page layouts and are better placed into InDesign?
Any constructive ideas or successful workarounds most appreciated. Thanks. JETNZ> Maybe I don't appreciate the robust functionality of FH.
I can't let the Freehand-bashing go undefended.
Freehand was never "just" an illustration program. And for many people, it was the "only" page layout program available.
b Freehand had a huge following in Israel
where it was the first multi-page program that allowed people to set type in Hebrew (right to left). For small documents (I always put a limit of 20 pages), Freehand was a terrific product.
b Freehand has a huge market share in South Africa.
During the years of apartheid, many American companies, including Adobe, honored the boycott of doing business in South Africa. Macromedia chose not to honor the boycott. Therefore Freehand became the only program available. I don't justify the decision to do business in SA, but it explains why people used Freehand.
Apart from market share, there were also many legitimate reasons to use Freehand as a page layout program:
b Freehand had a "wrapping" tab feature
that made it unnecessary to put tabbed text into separate boxes as Quark and PM required. This wrapping tab is still unique to Freehand and would be a bonus in many word processing and layout programs.
b Freehand has different sized pages
in the same document. How many times have I heard people ask for such a feature here? Yet Freehand has it where Quark, PM, and ID don't.
b Freehand has some of the most advance selection tools
in the business. I'm thinking of the ability to select items within a range of stroke weights as well as other attributes. Again neither Quark, PM, or ID have such a feature. And even Illustrator, which has a "Magic Wand" selection tool can match Freehand's selection dialog box.
There are other features, but I don't need to go into them.
However, I do agree that Macromedia did not give Freehand the time and attention it needed to do well in today's market.
The code is ancient.
The output to PDF directly from Freehand is stuck back on Acrobat 5.
Some of the transparency features are not what we consider true transparency.
And so on.
But to just lump anyone who uses Freehand into a category of not professional is wrong. -
How can I find a text box with a specific word in it ?
Hi,
I have hundreds of settlement names on a map created with the text tool. How can I search on the name of one of them and find it on my map ?
I am with FH9 but the method would no doubt be backwards compatible from MX. If it isnt I would launch MX just for this exercise.
Would this also work if the word was part of a text box text ?
I have the luxury of it being the entire text box !
Cheers
EnvirographicsIf you have one large text box to search for the word, select it, then go to EDIT>FIND & REPLACE>TEXT...
Type in your word and click FIND NEXT button. If you have multiple occurances of the name, keep clicking the FIND NEXT button until the word hilites.
If you have scattered text boxes on your map, don't select any of them but still go through the EDIT>FIND & REPLACE>TEXT... routine I mentioned. FreeHand will look through all text boxes to find your word.
Oh yeah, this works the same in FreeHand 8 thru FHMX. -
I wanted to remind everyone that the page is doing some good.
We do have a lot of signatures, and the counter shows well over
3,000 visits. All we need to do is to keep letting people know that
the page is out there. FH Addict, I really appreciated your efforts
in getting the Mac websites in France to mention the page. It
brought a lot of visitors! We need some North American people to do
the same for the US!
I also want to say it's nice how respected the page
is...aside from a few comments that needed to be deleted. It's
great to see FreeHand praised without having to trash the
competition!
And thanks to someone who finally posted from my home state
of Connecticut here in the US! Other users from there please post

One other thing (sorry for the length). I would like to do a
font celebrating what FreeHand can do. I would like to have
contributions from others on this board (dg, Judy, Bembelembe, FH
Addict and others) for this font. I couldn't pay any of you, as the
sale of the font would go toward increasing the bandwidth of my
website and finally starting the gallery of FreeHand images online.
Would any of you be interested in contributing to a font like this?
I would give you credit on my webpage. You can see an example of a
font I did using FreeHand at
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/enrich/rich-dingbats-and-bursts/
i am in the process of building the webpage for submissions but
just wanted your thoughts on it.
I just think it would be nice to have a font that shows what
FreeHand is capable of.I grew to love fh so much that the thought of it leaving the
scene is too much for words. -
Import Tiff to Freehand problem
HI all,
Im so worry just got this problem.
Im doing a school book design, it contains around 100pcs of
Photoshop Tiff import in Freehand 11 file. Now just found that the
Freehand 11 change all my Photoshop Tiff file name to other code
when the name more than 31 charater included extension (.tif).
For example:
Photoshop file's name: Silver JA-Performance-B-0012-low.tif,
After import to Freehand 11 and I check the Tiff name, I saw
it change to: Silver JA-Performance#A26F4.tif
How to do?? This can fix??
If I need change the original Photoshop Tiff name, I need
change more than 300 files. Because included the PSD for retouch,
Hi-Res for output and LOW-RES for working.
Pls, anyone can help.....many many thank....

Yes, it appears that FH's internal database cannot handle
long filenames.
When image files are imported, the name of the linked file is
not changed in
the Finder, but FH's links dialog shows a shortened name. If
you must see
the name of the file within FH, it looks like you'll have to
rename or
abbreviate the files.
If you're on a Mac, and if you have many files with a single
long word or
series of characters, Applescript could help change
filenames. Changing
'Performance' to 'Perf' fixes the filename in your example.

Hello,
Mac - Freehand MX 11.0.2
I can successfully copy and paste Japanese characters from
word or other programs into freehand and they are correctly
displayed in japanese fonts or Apple Unicode. I have the English
language version and apparantly need the Japanese language version
to properly work with Japanese characters.
At the moment there are problems when setting a the
characters in a text block, the individual characters can't be
selected as with other latin based languages. For example I set my
curser and want to create a manual linebreak, instead of making the
linebreak where my curser ist, the linebreak is create a number of
characters before where the curser is. Also, behind each block of
characters there is a massive amount of white space which cant be
deleted. (For examples, the characters run 50 mm wide but the
actual text field is 100 mm wide).
I have checked all the text settings however have not found a
way or setting that allows the Japanese characters to react or be
set like a latin based text.
Any ideas? Thank you.> Apple Unicode. I have the English language version and

Yes.

No settings for Japanese in FreeHand.
Now I use Illustrator more than FreeHand and it can handle
Japanese text quite well, even better than InDesign which for
example often leaves period (ring) in the beginning of a line. If I
need Japanese text in FreeHand I make it in Illustrator, convert to
paths and copy/paste into FreeHand.

Adobe actively killing off Freehand with Flash CS5
Hi,
We have just upgraded to Flash CS5, wanted CS4 and were told there is now CS5 and it will be that.
We come to open our Freehand maps from our vast database of such and CS5 wont open them. Flash 8 would.
CS5 we are told has dropped support for Freehand. This brings the new map work of a Government body in Flash to a halt.
Freehand is the tool for maps, superior to Illustrator. I have tried out Illustrator and hate it, other Cartographers also stick with Freehand. Its about time Adobe stopped shunning that side of the graphics industry. We have a job to do.
If Adobe host Freehand they should ensure two vector apps work together. No reason why suddenly Flash will not work with the vector file, somebody has simply tweaked it to deny Freehand users the ability to use Flash anymore.
As I type I now learn that Adobe have dropped selling Freehand, long rude word !!!!!!!!!!!!
How dare they deny cartographers a better tool. We have tried to convert maps in the past, the clipping paths are one aspect that fall over. Line caps another. There is no time to both do a job and mess around battling with Illustrator, no money to employ a second person to be tasked with this. Gov't helped the banks out and now find the money by cutting down on us !
Does anyone know how to work with Freehand and Flash, CS3 I gather will open fh9 files (I still use FH9 as I prefer its interface 3 doesnt look like an 8 etc, data entry windows a decent size. )
Will CS4 open fh9, ...will it open .fh11 ?
EnvirographicsSad to hear that. I just began working with CS4 and found that copy paste from FreeHand to Flash CS4 works fine. Hope I never need to badgrade to CS5.
