Word in MAC OS X

Question

Hello,
I would like to ask you some advice.
This morning I couldn't open through Word my documents anymore, I can still do that through 'finder'.
In word I can still type a document, sent it, save it, mail it, print it, ...
but the function: documents => open   does block the system => a coloured wheel doesn't stop to go and
ends up with a screen with menu which I can't use and have to close through 'forced stop'.
What did I do wrong?
I can't think of anything which I did different from other days and it worked for years very smouthly.
