Word in Office 2004 OS 10.3.9 crashes every time I open a document...?

Hi,
I"m not sure this is the appropriate forum for this, but I thought I'd try here...
I've been running Office 2004 on my G4 for many with no problem. I do very little, occasional Word documents and some Excel. I've stayed at OS 10.3.9 for ages, since I'm stuck there because of my Pro Tools hardware. I change nothing with my system unless something goes wrong. At some point about six months ago, for no apparent reason, every time I tried to open any Word document on the Mac, I would get a message from Word saying that corruption was detected in the document, and would I like to attempt recovery. I click "Ok", then Word crashes. This happens on any and all Word documents. These documents open fine on other computers, Mac or PC. They are not corrupt. But I suppose something is? I Googled around and tried a fix deleting the "FontCache(11)" file from Microsoft/Preferences, but that didn't work. I installed the two major service packs for Office 2004. No go.
If anyone has any tips for what to try next I'd appreciate it! Thanks - Steve

There should be some kind of evidence of the cause of crashes, in general
within the system's Console utility; where logs of several types activity are
located. These may be hard to decipher since they are written in geek.
You may try something other than Office 2004, for the occasional document;
since Open Office or Neo Office is updated more often and they are free.
Also consider a second hard disk drive where a later OS X version can live.
Fonts may be a fair place to look; since they can be a cause of odd behavior.
However in an older system, other things may be at work to make a problem.
Not sure what else to say; except the symptom includes use of MS Office...
The Console logs (or in some cases, see System Profiler's log files) may
be a way to see if there are any clues left behind, from the crashes.
Do you have a backup clone of the computer and its contents? It may be
a good idea to take some time and investigate the issue(s) and maybe go
into the computer and do housekeeping. With a complete backup you could
check the computer's hard disk drives, and move everything on/off the Mac.
The holistic approach can help, if one has time to do several things at once.
And carefully, in any event...
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Excel 2013 (office 365) crashes every time I opened a excel file directly from Browser or zip file.

    Hi guys,
I got a problem with my Office 365 that every time I open an office file from IE/chrome browser (i.e. click the document link and save the file to local, open it in the browser after download completed) or under a zip file, no matter it is an excel file
or word document, the Excel/Word crashes. The Excel/Word will ask me to repair the file if I open the file again. The file will be closed automatically after the repair, when I open the file again it will told me the excel/word itself has just successfully
registered and ask me to close and re-open the excel again in order to enable editing the file. This is extremely inconvenience, I have to open this file 4 times to edit my file.
Could anyone here can help me to resolve the problem?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
According to your description, Excel seems not crash when you opened a local Excel/Word file directly. Where do you store these file? OneDrive, SharePoint or other?
If possible, please let me see the screenshot of the error dialog.
Moreover, please open Event Viewer to check whether there's any error about the Excel/Word crash issue.
Press Win + R, type "eventvwr" in the blank box, press Enter. In the Event Viewer, browse to Windows Logs -> Application, there may be some errors after the crash.
To protect your privacy, you may send the error logs to
[email protected], we will try to find the cause.

  • Microsoft Word crashes every time I open it.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro using Mavericks and every time I try to open Word the program crashes. This is a very new (as in this morning) problem. Do I need to upgrade to Yosemite for Word to work again? I downloaded the Office software for free from my universities website as a student, and now that I'm not a student anymore I'm not sure how to reinstall the software. The image below is the screen I get as soon as I open Word.

The crash says you have Mavericks, not Yosemite.  10.9.5 is Mavericks, Yosemite is 10.10.
But you don't want to upgrade until you isolate the reason for the crash.  It looks like an incomplete installation of Microsoft Office.
You will need to find the original Office installer disc that installed Office on your machine.  If you never got one, contact the school, or look at these Office alternatives:

  • Safari crashes every time i open after latest office update

Safari worked fine until this past week.  My only thought is that it happened after the latest Microsoft Office software update. Is it connected?  Safari opens and 2 seconds later crashes.  Uses Firefox in the mean time

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • Speech in Word for Office 2004

Does Microsoft Word in Office 2004 for Mac include speech recognition? Is there a way to dictate text to Word?
    -Paul

The Word in Mac Office does not support speech recognition features , so there's no way so far of dictating text to your PB .
Microsoft doesn't seem to be concerned about this either .
So keep using the keyboard for writing your text , because anyway speech recognition would be a hassle for word to dictate texts with even if it would be available .
And there are softwares to train your typing capabilities in no time .
I suggest you use them instead of waiting for Microsoft to release a speech recognizable version of Word for Mac Office .

    "Motion 5" is your friend.
Michael Wohl has a nice 15 video series (free) about Motion 5 at http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/motion5101-overview-and-workflow-guide (right side)
This is a "teaser" series to sell his tutorials but it is really good. Just saw it yesterday for the first time.
While all you want is just to place pins, realize that Motion has so much more. All kinds of effects and they can be really customized. Maybe put their street address, contact name, and phone number by the pin?
Motion 5: cheap at $49.99 (just got my download two days ago)
    Motion 5: Support Community athttps://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/motion_5
If you're using the map for, say, deliveries, and use an iPad, what you could do is have a general map of the area imported into Motion, create the pins and whatever, then save (share?) it to the iPad.
Disclaimer: I have virtually no relationship with anything connected with this tutorial product, developer, or anything.

  • Office Web Apps Issue - "Sorry, something went wrong" message when opening a document (any MS docx, ppt etc) in IE. With Chrome, it pops (Microsoft Office needs your permission) message and on RUN, it opens the document.

When opening any Microsoft documents ( docx, ppt etc) in SharePoint 2013,
Internet Explorer behavior : "Sorry, something went wrong" An unexpected error has occurred message and then nothing happens.
In Chrome : Pops (Microsoft Office needs your permission) message and on clicking RUN, it opens the document.
In Firefox : the documents opens, after asking which application do you want to use to open it.
The feature (Open Documents in Client Applications by Default) is not activate.
Why the MS documents are not working in IE 10?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to open Microsoft documents in SharePoint 2013.
I recommend to Run the following PowerShell in OWA Server :
Remove-OfficeWebAppsHost # To Remove any restriction
    Or
New-OfficeWebAppsHost -Domain <String> # To allow specific domain Name
In addition, you can allow OAuth via HTTP using the following commands:
    $config = (Get-SPSecurityTokenServiceConfig)
    $config.AllowOAuthOverHttp = $true
    $config.Update()

Since upgrading to OS X Mavericks I have not been able to work on any MS Word tracked changes documents (works fine if no tracked changes or comments in the doc). Every time upon opening such a word file with tr.changes the word processor closes / crashes.
What can be done in this case?

I just discovered that by turning off in tracked changes balloons in Word preferences prevents the software from crashing, but from then on I need to use only the review pane.

  • Office 2013 continues to ask for reactivation every time

    Hello:
Every time we open office 2013 using Azure, it asks me to reactivate it. Are there any solution for this.
    TEK

    Hi Brian123456,
Installing and using Office Programs on Azure VMs are not allowed because they are Technically Client Applications.
Below in Quotes is an Exerpt from the MSDN Licensing White Paper (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13350) under the Subtitle "MSDN Cloud Use Rights:
Running the MSDN Software on Microsoft Azure VMs and VMs on Shared Servers Run by 3rd Parties"
"Example 3: A developer who is licensed for Visual Studio Premium with MSDN has deployed Visual Studio and SQL Server in a VM running on Azure in order to develop new stored procedures for a database application. Using Visual Studio in this Azure VM to write
code is allowed as part of MSDN cloud use rights. The developer could access this VM without needing to purchase a RDS CAL. The developer would also like to install Office in the VM to access his emails and Lync to communicate with other developers. Using
Outlook to access emails or using Lync to communicate with other users in the VM is not allowed because this is not within the MSDN use rights to design, develop, test or demonstrate software."
I hope this answers your Question, If you have any doubts please let us know.

Microsoft word is not responding.  I get this message every time I try to close a Word document or do some other functions such as change margins or print.  I just get the twirling ball.  I'm using OSX on a imac.  What do to?

Bummer! The only way I have ever been able to get rid of the dreaded twirling ball was to reboot....with the exception of one time only, when it actually was some super techie issue that was only resolved when they looked at it and did their magic.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

  • Word MS Office 2004 Font as squares

I have 2 users so far that when they use one specific machine in Word, all their font is just squares. If they switch to another machine in the lab their font is fine. I've tried changing to another font, but no good, still squares. It is machine specific and user specific. We are running G5 1.8GHz iMac 10.4.4 clients with Office 2004. I've tried throwing out their prefs but that one machine still has squares. All fonts are in /Library/Fonts, no fonts are in the MS Office folders. No fonts are in the users folders. Any ideas why this issue is machine and client specific? Any suggestions besides re-imaging?
    Thanks,
    Martha

I've had the same problem as well. It seems to be a font cache issue so you can try deleting the font caches for Office in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
If that doesn't work, you could use a cache cleaning util to dump all the font caches on the computer.
We mostly just re-clone since we have NetBoot/NetRestore all set up, it is easy and often as quick as troubleshooting.
