Word of wisdom about iCloud based on my experience

I have spent hours researching the functionality of iCloud last night. The steps below may help you avoid a lot of pitfalls if you are interested in inutilizing iCloud for the purposes of sharing content and synchronization between members of your family or very small company. Please read the steps in their entirety before following these instructions if you choose to do so.
1. If you have a family or a small company where you want to share certain content (Content purchased on iTunes, iWork documents, etc.) among the members, use the existing (pre-iCloud) Apple ID that you have been using as the iTunes account for sometime now and under which you made most of your iTunes purchases, and create a master iCloud account using this Apple ID (see Step 3). For those who never had an @me.com account, this master iCloud account based on the iTunes account's Apple ID will be a non @me.com account - a lot of people have been using @gmail.com accounts for this purpose.
2. Create several personal iCloud accounts by going to Settings/SystemPreferences -> iCloud in your iOS 5 device or Mac OS 10.7.2 (or later), respectively.  Each family/company member will use one (or more) personal iCloud account(s) as their personal email account as well as for syncing their personal Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Notes. Once you create each of these accounts under Settings/System Preferences -> iCloud either in iOS 5 (or later) or Mac OS 10.7.2 (or later), remove such a newly created account from Settings/System Preferences -> iCloud and create another one if needed.
Caution: iCloud accounts can be created only from iOS 5 (or later) or from Mac OS 10.7.2 (or later). You can only create 3 iCloud accounts from each iOS device an/or each Mac, so use your quotas sparingly and with much thought. iCloud accounts cannot be created from the www.icloud.com web site.
3. Remove the last personal iCloud account from Settings/System Preferences-> iCloud and go to Step 4.
4. Create a master iCloud account as described in Step 1 by going to iCloudSettings/System Preferences -> iCloud in iOS 5 (or later) or Mac OS 10.7.2(or later) and entering your pre-iCloud Apple ID which you have been using for most of your iTunes purchases before iCloud went live on October 12, 2011. You will be asked if you want to create an @me.com email account for email synchronization under your pre-existing Apple ID (about to become your iCloud master account). This is where you get a chance to tie your pre-iCloud Apple ID that uses a non @me.com email account with a brand new @me.com email account. Don't screw this up. If there is a particular ID you want to claim on the @me.com domain and tie that @me.com ID to your pre-iCloud Apple ID/iTunes ID, you only get one chance to do this right. Therefore, in Step 2 (see above) you should not try to create an iCloud account with the @me.com address that you want to tie to your pre-iCloud Apple ID; otherwise, you have lost your chancet o tie the two IDs together.
5. Use your non @me.com Apple ID as your master iCloud account on each iOS device and each Mac that belongs to your family/company. You get to chose which services you want to sync with this iCloud account. You do not have to choose Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and/or other services to sync with this master iCloud account, but you probably want to use this account for backing up each iOS device into this iCloud account, enable Photo Stream on this account (probably for a family, but not a company), and enable iWork document syncing on this account for shared document storage. You will most likely have to pay extra to increase your storage quota on this master iCloud account from the free 5GB to the amount of space that suits your needs.
6. Now configure one (or more) newly created (in Step 2) personal iCloud accounts by going to Settings/System Preferences -> Mail, Contacts,Calendars  in iOS 5 (or later) and in Mac OS 10.7.2 (or later). Each ofthese accounts can be configured to sync Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and/or Notes, depending on each individual user's preferences. Each of these personal iCloud accounts comes with 5GB of free storage. If you use these accounts only for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and/or Notes, you will probably not exceed the free 5GB storage quota on any of these accounts.
7. Each member of the family/company can share his/her calendar(s) with other members, and those whose calendars are shared with others, can create events and invite others to the events. The invitations come as push notifications, and are instantaneous (both on iOS devices and on Macs). I think this also works with Microsoft Outlook. When one receives such an invitation, one can either accept it or reject it. This response is delivered back to the person who created the event. If one accepts the invitation, the event is entered into invitee's calendar, which is synced with all other devices owned by the invitees via iCloud.

Duh... what are you talking about?
I found:
Update all at the same time Don't use iOS 4.3.5 or below.
If you upgrade to Lion 10.7.2 (cloud support) and you turn the system on, it will convert local calenders, contacts etc to a cloud based version. (will work offline as well)
However... sync with iTunes with everyting checked on your iDevice info tab will restore the local calendars as well again if you didn't upgrade your iDevice and switched on the cloud services as well.
Well, now you got everything twice... double entries in your addressbook, double birthdays in your calendar... it;s all very confusing. Use common sense, invest some time and you will manage it.
Once set up... it kicks ***.
BUT if you use OUTLOOK FOR MAC as well, and leave the outlook sync service on... you run into even more troubles.
Outlook for Mac syncs with local databases only and will also restore them if not present...
IT DOES NOT SYNC with the cloud. For now you will need to rely on native iCal, adressbook and mail... :-(
A fix from microsoft will be needed to communicate with the iCloud storage system.
Good luck upgrading everybody... took me hours to figure... :-)
A wizzard would have been nice APPLE.
My advice:
1) Sync your iDevices one last time with iTunes.
2) Upgrade to Lion 10.7.2
3) Turn off all sync services in Outlook if you use Outlook.
(Outlook can still be your Email client... but that's it for now, the rest will be broken.)
3) Turn on iCloud, your local databases are turning into the cloud version. (if you turn a cloud service off, it will ask if you want to keep a local version > the old version.)
4) Upgrade your iDevices to iOS 5...
5) Turn on cloud services on your iDevices and you're done.

I have an ipod classic 160gb and have copies 12000 songs down to itunes to move to it but at the last minute i got a message that it will not accomodate 896 mb of what I have copied to itunes.  any words of wisdom?

You have to open the iTunes program, on the file tab there is an option to "create new version" you click on this option and goes to change iPod or iPhone version. If you want to change the version of videos you click on iPad or TV version, and these will appear in movies because  the format is MPEG-4.
Care with the music, you repeat music tracks, and maintains the old format version.
    I hope it helps.

The recommended solution for most families is to share the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases, so you can share your purchases, but us different IDs for iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud.  With this arrangement, each person can automatically download purchases made on the shared ID (by turning this feature on in Settings>iTunes & App Stores), while keeping their FaceTime calls, text messages and iCloud data (including photo stream) separated.  There is no requirement that the ID you use for purchasing be the same as the ID you use for these other services.

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

  • I received a text today while at work about iCloud keychain verification code. I have not signed up for it or anything that uses it. I work out of the city with limited internet access so not sure why I would be getting this. Is my info safe??

I received a text today while at work about iCloud keychain verification code. I have not signed up for it or anything that uses it. I work out of the city with limited internet access so not sure why I would be getting this. I only got this number about a month ago. Apparently someone else had the number before because I get texts from his family members wondering whats going on. I got one yesterday and the person didn't seem to thrilled that the number was cutoff and today I got 2 texts about iCloud Keychain which I don't even know what it is. Seems suspicious to me. If the person who use to own the number is doing it he should know it is not his number anymore because he obviously didn't pay his bills.  I'm not too sure about iCloud Keychain so just want to know my info safe?? It says it can store credit card numbers which is what gets me worried. Frankly I think it's pretty stupid to save that kind if information with any kind of app. But I don't want some random person trying to access my personal information because they are bitter they lost their number.  Please let me know as soon as possible so I can change passwords or anything that is needed.
    thanks

If it were me, I would go to my carrier and get a new number. Since you have only had it for a month, the inconvenience would be minimal.

  • Question about iCloud. How do I change my e-mail address, I have the wrong one and want to change it.

question about iCloud.  How do I change my e-mail address, I got the wrong address.

There are a variety of options available to you, including creating an email "alias" or changing the email address associated with your iCloud ID.
For all practical purposes your iCloud email address and Apple ID are interchangeable. To change your Apple ID read Apple ID: Changing your Apple ID.
If you simply created an Apple ID in error, you might consider abandoning it altogether and creating a new one. On the other hand, if you already used that Apple ID to purchase iTunes or other digital content, don't create a new Apple ID, because any purchases you already made are inexorably linked to the Apple ID used to make them.

  • Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 b4 sync with iTunes?

Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 to iCloud b4 sync with iTunes? Last time I synced iphone4 with iTunes, I updated to 5.0.1 when I connected, but it wiped my calendar entries. I had to reset to the last date I had synced (4months ago). So my question is... Now that I have iCloud, should I back up both my iPhone and my iPad before I sync with iTunes?  And will all the data from iPad, iPhone, and computer all merge when the iPad and iPhone are synced?

    It does not matter.

Hi, I have a question about iCloud. I have an ipod 4th generation and im getting a 5th generation. i have lots of games such as subway surfers and temple run 2. I worked and played really hard on earning stuff and have also made in app purchases. Does iCloud save that kind of stuff?

    See:

However, not all in-app purchases will transfer to another device. For which ones ill not see:

  • I have a question about icloud.

I do not have icloud in my system preferences.  I have mail set up on icloud and did the transfer of my mobile me account.  But icloud does not appear in the system preferences.  Where is it or is it not supposed to be there.  Mobile me is in the preferences, but not icloud.  Thanks.

It's not there in anything less than 10.7.x, no worry, iCloud eMail is about all you have of iCloud in 10.5.x
But no worry, unless you've locked your future to Apple's Apps & iDevices, there really isn't anything usefull about iCloud other than eMail.

  • I did not know about iCloud until after my iPad2 was stolen but I have the serial number so is there any way Apple/iCoud can help trace it when the thief logs into Apple's website /store etc? Thanks

I did not know about iCloud until after my iPad2 was stolen but I know the serial number so is there any hope the thief can be tracked when he or she logs in to the Apple store etc? thanks

iOS devices cannnot be tracked or located with just the serial number. Unless you shared your Apple ID and password with anyone, then your account cannot be accessed at the iTunes Store.

This has worked fine with MobileMe with only a couple of minor glitches in the past.
Any experience doing this the "right" way?

  • I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please!

I am confused about Icloud. I have a 5 year old Macbook, a 2 year old macbook and a 5 year old mac mini. What exactly do I need to do to get all this connected via Icloud. I also have an Iphone 3G. Help please! Also, I still don't understand exactly what the benefits are. At the moment it seems a lot of hassle to change a system that's been working perfectly well and that I'm very happy with. I'm not at all sure whether the mac mini (1.66 GHz INtel Core Duo) can be brought up to the relevant spec to run ICloud.  Any thoughts?

There are two aspects to iCloud.  One is simply getting an account, or migrating a mobileme account to iCloud.  The second part is using the various features of iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, use music match or photo sharing, and store iWorks documents.
First to get an iCloud account:
If you have a mobileme account, you can migrate by simply logging onto www.icloud.com (ignore any references to Lion and just click through to complete the migration).  If you have OS X Lion or an iOS 5 mobile device, you can create an iCloud account on that device using any valid AppleID.
Once you have an account, you can use JUST the mail account if you wishi - it is a standard IMAP account so you would set it up like any other IMAP email account you have, in whatever client program you use to read email.
To use the OTHER feautes of iCloud, your computers will have to be running OS X Lion (10.7).  Your iPhone 3G will never be able to use iCloud as it cannot run iOS 5 (you need a min. of an iPhone 3GS to run iOS 5).
The requirements for OS X Lion are here - http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html  You need a min. of a Core 2 duo processor so you mini is not capable of running Lion.
So, in your case, the single reasons for iCloud would be if you have a mobileme account, then use the online www.icloud.com to migrate your account so you do not lose your @me.com email address.  You can use iCloud email (without using any other iCloud features) by setting it up as IMAP mail with these settings - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864
If you want an iCloud account and do NOT already have a mobileme account, you will need to upgrade one machine at least to Lion in order to be able to create an iCloud account.
