Word processing on Appleworks

I just bought iWorks primarily for it's word processing. I'm disappointed because I can't find any "Word Count" feature. Does the Appleworks word processor have a "Word Count" feature? Otherwise, what is better, worse, or just different about the Word Processors on these two programs?

Thanks anyway, Peggy, but please cancel my message above. I just found the word count in Pages but it wasn't easy. It's buried under the "Info" subhead of the "Document" portion of the "Inspector" section of the text tool lineup at the top of the text screen. Why can't it simply be in the File or edit menu?
In this connection as a new Mac owner after using Windows for some yearts, I have a serious beef. The Mac User Guide which comes with a new computer is a joke. Apple seems to think that every new customer must already be a rocket scientist who needs no help at all from the start. I can find some guides for the OXS operating system and its various programs in the Help sections or on the Apple website but they often number in the hundreds of pages making it impractical to download for careful reading offline. There should be one comprehensive User Guide for dummies which covers everything available in print form for new Mac users. It would solve a lot of grief for new users.

  • Word processing software:  Appleworks, NeoOffice / saving as Word.doc

I would love some advice on word processing software.
My daughter is a college student who sometimes needs to e-mail her papers to a teacher (in Word). She does not have Word, and we're not buying it. In the past, she's used the school computers, but that's not always practical. She has a Mac, with Appleworks on it. If she works in Appleworks and saves a paper in Word format, will it really open okay in Word, with footnotes, images, etc. intact? (Obviously, she doesn't want to get a lower grade for something so silly and avoidable.) I think I have seen on this forum somewhere a mention of trouble with footworks in Appleworks docs saved in Word format.
Also, if she were to save as a Word doc, which format would be the best to use: Word Mac 6; Word Mac 98; Word Windows 6; Word Windows 97, 2000, XP 2002?
She also needs to do simple tables sometimes, which it looks like Appleworks can do. Do these translate well?
Also, I have looked at NeoOffice and OpenOffice online. It looks like one of those would be a possibility for her, too. Apparently, documents can be saved as Word files in those programs. Does anyone know if they are any better than Appleworks for this purpose? (For instance, with footnotes?)
From the NeoOffice Website: "You can exchange documents with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org users, even on other platforms!" Does that mean a Word file will open and display okay, if you get one e-mailed to you? And that your own Word file will open and display okay on the other end? (I know this is not about Appleworks, but someone might know. . .)
Looking through this forum, I have seen software for opening Word documents (icWord), but my daughter needs to be able to (reliably) go both ways--saving and opening.
    Thanks much in advance!

    Overall, I'd concur with Ken.
AppleWorks/Word conversion does have difficulties with tables and footnotes.
Neo Office has better compatibility with MS Office, and runs without installing additional software on your Mac. But it's a Java implementation of an earlier version of OpenOffice.org, and is missing a few recent improvements. It's also a bit slow, although in some uses this is not a problem.
OpenOffice.org runs in an Xwindow (no relation to MS Windows), and requires installation of X11, Apple's Xwindow implementation. I haven't used it, but expect that it is a more compatible implementation than NeoOffice.
Both are free to download and use. If nothing else, one or the other is useful to see how successful the AppleWorks > Word translation of a particular file has been.
The closest compatibility will be achieved with MS Windows (Mac), of course. If your reasons for not purchasing MS Windows are strictly economic, you mmight want to rethink them. As a student, your daughter is elegible to purchase the Teacher and Student edition at a much lower price than the retail version. This version is operationally identical to the retail one. The largest difference is a licencing one—student/teacher licencees are not eligible for reduced price upgrades to the next version. They are, though, eligible to purchase the next Student & Teacher edition provided they still qualify at that time.

    Barry

  • In order to run Dragon, we upgraded our OSx to Maverick. Now we can't find our word processing program and Appleworks 6 is not supported. Doesn't a word processing program come with the upload of Maverick?

We upgraded our Mac OS X to a Maverick in order to run a Dragon Program. However, we no longer have a word processing program!  Appleworks is not supported.  Doesn't the upgraded Maverick have a word processing program included?

Not included.  You can purchase Pages in the App Store, or use a free word processor like Bean or a free office suite like  LibreOffice or OpenOffice (and there's also MicroSoft Office for Mac)

  • Inserting maps in Appleworks word processing doc

I am writing a family history book, using photos and maps. I am having trouble when I insert a jpeg map into the word processing document. It prints out perfectly from the scan in the Photo Elements program, but ends up distorted when I insert it in the document. I have tried taking digital pictures to insert, and they are better but not as good as I'd like. I have cropped and resized to the correct size while in the Photo program. Do you have any suggestions? I have Appleworks 6. I tried saving it as TIFF and that didn't help.

Try saving them as PICT instead of TIFF.

  • Savining my Appleworks word processing pages to PDF

When I save a word processing page (done in Appleworks), to the PDF format, the file is multiplied hugely in size. Is this normal? Office Depot has trouble opening them to print my books. Will using the "compress PDF" interfere with the files in any manner? Will it damage the photos?

    Barbara,
I have never used the compressed version, but the increase in size of the file is often a common occurrence of the PDF generator that Apple has used. This was more prevelent in Panther (10.3) than in Tiger (10.4). The PDF generator in Tiger much improved over earlier versions. The only reason I would see that Office Depot has trouble reading your PDF is if you did not check the box to attach the extension.pdf to the file. Adding the extension to the file enables Windows users to double click to open it. The files will always open if the application is opened first and then the document is opened within the application.
If you purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat, you can that applications PDF generator and then the files are much smaller than the word document. Since Adobe makes the reader software, their PDF generators are much better, produce higher quality results, most importantly, and are able to have the PDF significantly less in size without losing any of the features or quality.
    Good Luck

  • Opening appleworks word processing docs

So I am in the process of converting my 40,000 appleworks documents so they will open in Pages. I am converting all the word processing docs to appleworks 6.2.9. My question is: Is this enough? Will these documents now be safe or is there another step I have to take? I have converted my data bases to fileworks and just want to be sure that, down the road, I won't have a problem once all the AW WP docs are saved as AW6. I've been doing about 100 at a time. I open them all in AW6 and then quit AW and save them as AW6 docs and (I just hold down the return key) trash the AW pre-6 and Clarisworks docs after saving them as AW6 docs. Now they open in Pages. I'm just worried that the next system upgrade might screw me up again. I've been avoiding upgrading from 10.6.8 until I'm sure I won't lose these docs.

You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents.
There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock.
If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.

  • Appleworks Still Word Processing Program?

I am using Appleworks on my OSX 2.8. Is Appleworks still the word processing program on Macs? I was looking at a 10.4 and didnt notice Appleworks on it. Thanks.

Apple ceased including a word processing program when they started selling the intel macs. Appleworks still works on the intel macs but it is PPC not universal. The word processing program that apple sells that is universal is Pages (part of iWorks). It is not included with any macs but a demo is included.

  • Appleworks Word Processing: Cancelling Page View

Can anyone tell me how to cancel Page View in Appleworks WP? All I can find in Help is how to set it.

The Help files in AW states the following:
Note: Word-processing and presentation documents always display in Page View.
In the Window menu Page View is grayed and can't be changed. The line will not print though!

  • Appleworks word processing files to page files

I've got many hundreds of AppleWorks files merged onto my new iMac from my G5 OS 10.3.
For now 10.5 is allowing me to create Page files of them (not perfectly copied in some cases). Is there a way for the computer to search for all of them and to save them in Page in one operation? Or must I do each one separately?
    Thanks,
    Stacy

Pages will open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents directly. Just select a number of them in the Finder and drag them onto the Pages icon in the Dock.

  • How to delete an old locked appleworks (.cwk) word processing document?

How to delete an old locked appleworks (.cwk) word processing document? This is merely a startup file to make AppleWorks come up with text formatting etc all set to desired styles. AppleWorks doesn't work in Mavericks. I cannot find how to use Get Info to unlock this file so that it may be shoved to the trash.

    Eustace,
    1. Yes, the screenshot did not survive the trip into the text entry box after I hit send or whatever. Maybe I should upload it to my Flickr account and give it its own set and then insert the URL for that set here.
Thanks for the link. I've never used Terminal before so I tried out your link twice. I was able to follow the directions but I did not see an icon for the created file appear on my desktop. Then I added two screenshots to my desktop and those did not appear either. So, I restarted and both the file names that I'd created with terminal and the screen shots appeared on the desktop. Then I tried to use Terminal to make the added file disappear and it would not. However, I was able to select the created filenames and the screen shots and dump them all in the trash and empty the trash.
This morning I tried the method to create a file on the desktop a third time and it still does not appear on the desktop. What is the command for showing a listing of all the files in a directory? Suppose I wanted a listing of all the files on my desktop. I probably should be looking on the internet for a tutorial on using Terminal.
I understand your suggestion that I can use Terminal to delete the unwanted locked files but my computer is not acting quite the way the tutorial in your link suggests.
Thanks for the idea. It tells me I need to learn a bit about using Terminal.

  • AppleWorks word processing files from PowerPC G4 10.4.11 to new Intel Lion 10.7.5 iMac ?

I have only previously had a PowerPC G4 (still working) and have a number of files on AppleWorks ' word processing '.
I have recently invested in only my second computer ( Intel iMac Lion 10.7.4 ), and have discovered AppleWorks has been defunct since 2006 !
How can I export them from the G4, hopefully in a form they can still be edited and printed, rather than just as inaccessible archives ?

The only program which can actually open AppleWorks word processing documents is Apple's Pages, part of the iWork suite and available singly through the Mac App Store (however it will not open AppleWorks 5 documents, only Appleworks 6). This is the nearest thing available to AppleWorks for drawing and word processing: you can insert pictures and draw objects, and create complex layouts - indeed a number of attractive templates are provided. On the whole it will open AppleWorks word processing documents correctly, even when they embed images and drawings. The text display is better, particularly of small font sizes; and there are more options for handling images, such as shadows and reflections.
    More information here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page2.html
As to the other document types:
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Nothing will open Databases or Paint documents.

  • Pages Will NOT Import Appleworks v6 Word Processing Files

I've seen a number of posts in the community section that state that Pages will open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing files. That has not been my experience. I have the latest version of Pages and use OS 10.8. When attempting to open files such as "xms2002newsletter [v6.0].cwk" I get import error messages that "xms2002newsletter [v6.0] is not a word processing document." But it was. Same for all other version 6 AppleWorks docs. Tried keynote just for grins. Don't know if others have a similar experience, but Pages will not open AppleWorks v6 Word Processing documents for me.

As fruhulda said, it was an AppleWorks 6 draw document.
The only program other than AppleWorks that can open those files is an expensive version of EazyDraw & I'm not sure it could handle such a complex (& busy) document.
Have a Merry Christmas & enjoy the rare Christmas snow we're expecting tomorrow.

  • How do I make Pages the default word processing program?

How do I make Pages the default word processing program, including Appleworks files?
I want any Appleworks file I open to open in Pages - is there a setting to make that happen?

    Hello ADW,
To change the default programme used to open a filetype, Get Info on one of the files you are looking to set, the change the Open With selection to Pages.
Then click on Use this application to open all documents like this one.
You will have to repeat this for each file type you want to use that way.
    Have a wonderful day!

I would like to get a good word processing app. and be able to transfer the page to my Mac or print it through Airport Extreme to one of my printers.
I have iWork on my Mac but don't use it. I use Appleworks WP and data base.
I know Pages is available for the iPad but don't know how good it is as compared to other apps. that are mentioned.
    Any suggestions....
