Word processing on iPad

I wonder if you can adequately do some word processing on an iPad. If so, how? I did not find anywhere saying that you can download Mellel or Nisus Writer Pro (to me the two most important, the most reliable, the best word processing softwares for Mac) on an iPad. I hear that Pages can be downloaded on an iPad but is it really adequate? And how much is the cost for having a Pages software/application on your iPad? On a normal computer, I feel Pages still lags behind Mellel and Nisus Writer Pro. I also wonder if there is a TextEdit application for iPad! I am thinking of buying an iPad for light uses while in school as I have an iMac at home. Writing on a good word processor is a crucial thing for me. So any thoughts on this would be most appreciated. Ideally I would want the word processing application on the iPad to be easily compatible with those I have on my Apple computers: namely, TextEdit, Mellel, and Nisus Writer Pro.

The iPad is a closed system, you can only download what is in the app store, and neither Mellel or Nisus or MS have made versions of their word processor that could be put in that store.

$9.99 It is not the full version of Pages, as you might expect.

No.

How compatible it would be depends on what you need to write. To me it sounds like you might well not be satisfied. See this info on Pages:

  • Word processing on ipad retina?

I just purchased an ipad retina the other day and I realize there's no app for Microsoft word, however I do need to work on my word documents on ipad at times and I'm just wondering if there's any way to synchronize Microsoft office on Mac with word processing apps on ipad?

Have a look at the following (in my order of preference)

  • Word processing for iPad

have not been able to find an Apple or 3rd party word processing ap for iPad....maybe I am not looking at the right place....can you help.

Other options include Documents To Go, iWrite, and many others. Search the App Store or a compendium site like AppShopper for "word processor" or something similar and you'll find a number of options.
    Regards.

  • Word Processing on the iPad Retina Display

    Hi There,
I've been browsing the forums for a while and have seen various threads about the WP possibilities with iPad.  I've looked at ipages and iworks, and also a couple of others which are paid apps and claim to do mostly the same things (I really only want basic word processing which I can then save and email).
Many of the apps I've tried out are SO slow to load that it's really not worth the hassle.  In particular, those which rely on iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox or Sky Drive.   On the other hand, a few of the free apps seem to have no possibility to save anywhere which is daft.  Some autosave, but woe betide you if you log off before it's done that.
I used Polaris with my Samsung Note to very good effect, it allows export in both word or PDF (or other) formats and also allows direct export from the app if you want to do that.  It's pretty basic but sufficed for my needs however there doesn't appear to be a version for the iPad sadly.
If you were about to buy an app PURELY for word processing, and required something which allowed you to email from the app, to convert to pdf (I have a pdf converting app) AND allowed you either to store the doc on the iPad (is this even possible?  I'm guessing it is as the Note allows for this and has the same memory size) or uses iCloud or Google Docs - don't really mind which.
I can't seem to find any overall opinion on which is best.  Many seem to say iPages but I'm unsure how malleable it is and I don't have an Apple computer, only a PC so I need it to be fully compatible.
Thanks for any advice, help or experience anyone feels like sharing.

Yes, I was wondering about using the Notes app too.   Hmm,  I've just been looking at some of the links on another similar question and the real problem is, the reviews are terrible for many of the Office Pro type apps.  They cost around the same as Pages and claim to do all kinds of things but Documents to Go and Doc to Go Premium are simply slated in the review sections.
Thanks very much.  I shall probably try Pages first.

  • Word Processing with an IPad 2

Hi all! I just got an iPad 2 (WiFI, 32GB) and want to write some documents on it. I know I can read word documents on the iPad, but how can I create and save them? I apologize if this question has previously been answered, but I've been looking much of the morning and can't locate an answer. Thanks in advance.

You need a word processing app - there are several decent ones in the App Store. If you're working on MSWord docs, Documents 2 Go, QuickOffice and Office2HD are good. If you don't need ultimate MS compatibility, Apple's Pages is very good indeed

Is there an easy to use word processing program that works on the iPad?

A gazillion.  Pages, docs to go, quick office.  Look in the app store for word processing.  Read the reviews.

  • Can I use .otf fonts in any iPad(3rd gen) word processing app?

I am a newcomer to iPad usage, but I have been asked if I can use a .otf font in any iPad3 (word processing) app, but so far I have not been able to determine whether this is possible.
All the apps I have looked at so far do not specify .otf compatibility, and before I waste any more time, I wonder if anybody has been faced with this before?

When it comes to fonts, in the context of any app you happen to be using, what you see is what you get. you can't add fonts to iOS.

  • How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

It all depends on what I need to use the document for.
When I need to create a text document that I need to share at work I use OnLive Desktop.  This gives me a Windows 7 Desktop with Office 2010 apps on it that I can connect to DropBox. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/onlive-desktop/id490292278?mt=8 or CloudOn https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudon/id474025452?mt=8. You have to be connected to a FAST wifi network to use this option.
If I need to create a Word doc on the go I use QuickOffice Pro. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickoffice-pro-hd-edit-office/id376212724?mt=8
    Connects to DropBox.
If I just need to create a formatted text document, think Word document, I use Pages.  It is easy to use on the iPad, because it was designed for it from the start and it now supports TrackChanges. But it does Track Changes a bit clumsy.   https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id361309726?mt=8
Connects to iCloud and you can open in Pages from DropBox.
If I just need a plain text document, I use PlainText.  Connects to DropBox and is easy to use.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plaintext-dropbox-text-editing/id391254385?mt=8
There are lots of options out there, it just depends on what you need to do the most.

Can anyone recommend an App for word processing for the new ipad?  I was hoping to be able to use the dictation function to save some time.  Cloudon, evernote...anything better?

There are word processing apps such as Apple's Pages and from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice Pro HD.

I'm curious, would you provide another definition of "computer," because your second sentence is recursive.
His post contained some questionable grammar, as does yours. Such things sometimes go by the boards when you find yourself working on large numbers of submissions.
Assuming your question is more along the lines of, "In which ways is the iPad not a computer?", then the primary difference to me is the absence of any accessible directory structure and an associated file handling system. Add such things as limited I/O options, limited ability to expand or modify the system, severe restrictions on when and how data can be moved around, and so on and so forth. For those reasons, among others, I don't view the iPad as a computer.

  • I am looking for a word processing app

I am looking for a word processing app that I can use for sending .doc and .docx format papers via email or uploading them to websites directly from my ipad 2 without having to export them to or sync them with my actual computer.  Does the Pages app allow users to do this?  I need to make a purchase of such an app soon.  If this app is incapable of these actions, can anyone suggest an app or design an app for me that does them?

Pages can export documents in MS Word format. When I last did this (with Pages '09, the Mac version), the result was a .doc file.
Note that this is a translation, and like most translations, it's not always a perfect one. Some features of Pages are not supported in MS Word, and some Word features are not supported in Pages.
For a more precise answer wrt Pages for iOS, you should repost your question in the iWork For iOS community. The link will take you there.

  • Word processing with superscripts and subscripts.

Is there a word processing app for the iPad yet which does superscripts and subscipts?
(Discussions on this subject were posted on this website about a year ago, has the no superscipt button and no subscript button problem been fixed yet?)

I've found a possible solution to insert equations and formulas without Latex or copy/paste images, only with Pages for iPad and without internet, using Pages tools. So, I have some examples of Pages documents. If you want to take a look them, give me your email and I'll send you an example.
