Word Processing on the iPad Retina Display

Hi There,
I've been browsing the forums for a while and have seen various threads about the WP possibilities with iPad.  I've looked at ipages and iworks, and also a couple of others which are paid apps and claim to do mostly the same things (I really only want basic word processing which I can then save and email).
Many of the apps I've tried out are SO slow to load that it's really not worth the hassle.  In particular, those which rely on iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox or Sky Drive.   On the other hand, a few of the free apps seem to have no possibility to save anywhere which is daft.  Some autosave, but woe betide you if you log off before it's done that.
I used Polaris with my Samsung Note to very good effect, it allows export in both word or PDF (or other) formats and also allows direct export from the app if you want to do that.  It's pretty basic but sufficed for my needs however there doesn't appear to be a version for the iPad sadly.
If you were about to buy an app PURELY for word processing, and required something which allowed you to email from the app, to convert to pdf (I have a pdf converting app) AND allowed you either to store the doc on the iPad (is this even possible?  I'm guessing it is as the Note allows for this and has the same memory size) or uses iCloud or Google Docs - don't really mind which.
I can't seem to find any overall opinion on which is best.  Many seem to say iPages but I'm unsure how malleable it is and I don't have an Apple computer, only a PC so I need it to be fully compatible.
Thanks for any advice, help or experience anyone feels like sharing.

Yes, I was wondering about using the Notes app too.   Hmm,  I've just been looking at some of the links on another similar question and the real problem is, the reviews are terrible for many of the Office Pro type apps.  They cost around the same as Pages and claim to do all kinds of things but Documents to Go and Doc to Go Premium are simply slated in the review sections.
Thanks very much.  I shall probably try Pages first.

The HTC hotspot works fine with everything else I connect to it.
Also - ipad will not connect to my HTC via bluetooth. Again, I can connect to everything else with my HTC other than my ipad.
I have to say this is my first venture into Apple products and I have always wanted to get away from my windows based laptop to get a MacBook, the problems I have had (flash player etc) & continue to have (as above) are putting me right off swapping over. I HATE technology that doesn't work and my ipad has been hard work!

I stated my ipad as being an ipad2, but I now think it is a 3??? It was new Jan this year and is the 64gb retina display version.
I really would like to get to the bottom on this problem wit mobile hotspots as it is sitting on my desk next to me now and I cannot get it to connect to my HTC mobile hotspot!!!! It might be taking a flying lesson soon at this rate!!! Grrrrrrr...........

  • How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

How do you do word processing on the iPad is there a word processing App?

It all depends on what I need to use the document for.
When I need to create a text document that I need to share at work I use OnLive Desktop.  This gives me a Windows 7 Desktop with Office 2010 apps on it that I can connect to DropBox. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/onlive-desktop/id490292278?mt=8 or CloudOn https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cloudon/id474025452?mt=8. You have to be connected to a FAST wifi network to use this option.
If I need to create a Word doc on the go I use QuickOffice Pro. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickoffice-pro-hd-edit-office/id376212724?mt=8
    Connects to DropBox.
If I just need to create a formatted text document, think Word document, I use Pages.  It is easy to use on the iPad, because it was designed for it from the start and it now supports TrackChanges. But it does Track Changes a bit clumsy.   https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id361309726?mt=8
Connects to iCloud and you can open in Pages from DropBox.
If I just need a plain text document, I use PlainText.  Connects to DropBox and is easy to use.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plaintext-dropbox-text-editing/id391254385?mt=8
There are lots of options out there, it just depends on what you need to do the most.

I noticed the bright spots on the ipad retina display in a black image. Used only 2 weeks.is it normal?

No its not normal. I'm not sure how big these bright spots are, but it could be a hardware problem. Without more details, I would suggest that you take it to an Apple Store or take it back to wherever you bought it and let the, evaluate the iPad.

  • Word Processing in the iPad?

The Pages review sounds awful. Anything viable?

What's missing??? How about a basic filing system for your documents. ... from everything I can see and every view option it appears that the 10$ pages app has no alphabetic sort? no folders... Nuttin just a big long line of docs in some order that seems based on when they were brought onto the iPad. And no document search function (title search for full document finds)... No sort no search.....but apple has allowed this dogs breakfast to be used at the same time as the iPod... Something that seems a no no for other developers... Iget the font limitation thing ...good idea as font conflicts fill these discussion boards all the time .. And most users have no clue about how badly font conflicts can bring your computer to it's knees... All the substitutions seem close enough .... I'm not looking for a full on os here. But come on!!! No PDF import? But you can Export a PDF??? And when you get the files over from iTunes and you want to write them into the iPad permanently ??? ONE AT A TIME????
I bought a .99 cent program call write HD and it does all the organizational things. It falls short as an editor and creator. But this is supposed to be satellite system and not a laptop. Best practices for this device will fall somewhere short of a laptop so im not deluded here. Sure... So a way to get your docs on it is one of the prime directives.... Without having to drastically alter or rework them. (basically i have 1000 pages of lyric sheets.. Basic stuff, no graphics or links... In PDF in .doc and .docx pages and HTML ... Pages transfer locked up the computer 3 times trying to transfer 200 files... Write HD did 690 without a problem and the files that were not recognized had a generic icon that was easy to bulk select and delete!!!
Now. With pages on my laptop I can do the editing just fine..and pages docs are read pretty accurately by Write Hd and I'd junk pages altogether BUT it wont allow the iPod to continue playing when opening a doc. Very frustrating and really shows the limitations of the apple approach to what could have been an absolute monster addition to their line... Rushed to market without their usual attention to detail. I'm thinking this would have been a side effect of Steve not at the helm at the time this would have been in the hopper... I'm a loyal apple advocate but there are some real issues with their integration here... I have officially stopped drinking the cool aid... Bring on filemaker!!!

  • When I plug in my SD to lightning adapter for the iPad retina display, nothing happens. I've tried about 50 times, and one time it magically worked, so I know it's possible. Am I doing something wrong?

I just bought a new iPad with the SD to lightning adapter to upload pictures. When I plug it in, nothing happens. I have tried it with and without the SD card inserted when I plug it in, I've tried restarting it, I've even called Apple support and the woman hadn't even heard of the adapter. One time, it did work, so I know it's possible. I didn't do anything special that time. Every other time it hasn't worked. One time I got a message that said the device was not compatible. I bought them together and the salesman said they work together. Any advice?

For some reason the lightening adapter version can be buggy.
A few tricks with mine (mine is the old 30 pin version but the premise is the same). You can give the iPad a reset. Sometimes that clears things up.
Also, if the adapter is empty then it doesn't show up, because there's nothing to make it show up. If the files on there aren't formatted correctly then they won't show up. (if you're trying to use the adapter and a card to transfer photos to your ipad, they must follow a very strict naming convention or they're not seen)

  • Where is the : on the iPad retina display?

I need the colon symbol and cannot find it on the key pad for my ipad  :  where is it

The iOS keyboard is contextual. For example, if you're typing in the URL box, you won't have a space bar. Where are you trying to type when you can't find the colon?

  • Recipe for iPAD retina display

    Hi,
Does anyone have a 'recipe' for processing photos for the ipad retina display.
I'm a bit confused as to trying to print to jpeg (with what settings?) or export.
I've tried a bit, but not been really happy with the results.
    What do you do?
    hans

You could also have a read of Jeffrey Friedl's Lightroom-to-iPad workflow: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/ipad-howto2
This is effectively a Publish Service which can publish via FTP directly to a client app on the iPhone, thus bypassing iTunes and the iPad Photos app completely. I converted to this a few months back. Well worth a read.
PS I use exactly the same settings as Rikk, although I first crop all the images (VCs) to 4x3 if possible to ensure they are viewed full screen on the iPad.

Try rebooting your iPad by holding down the power and home buttons simultaneously until a blank screen with the Apple logo appears. Ignore the power off slider if it appears. After a while your device should go to the main screen, as if you're turning the iPad on. Don't worry, this won't do anything to your data, it just literally restarts the iPad.
